Day 27: Lunch

Renji wasn't so certain what this grilled cheese thing was all about, but he liked the sound of some soup. Even if it was strange western soup, well... there wasn't anything bad people could do to soup, in his experience. His good mood was starting to fray at the edges, a little, from the strain of dealing with the Ichimaru issue, and even more from what had been on the bulletin board earlier.

He'd never had difficulty simply writing something before. But...

He shook his head as he entered the line. He didn't want to think about it. He wanted to hold on to the tenuous equilibrium he'd managed to find.

Renji got himself a large bowl of soup, water, and even one of those sandwiches, just to try it. Old habit, recently awakened, had him over to one side of the cafeteria, where the fewest people possible would have the chance to pass behind him. He sat there with his back toward the wall and started eating.

(She's got nothing lined up, feel free to drop in and pester her)

Shana was reluctant to part from her brother and Valyn, but the nurse shoo'd her away after the voice spoke overhead once more. Next time she found someone who knew what they were talking about, she was going to ask who was talking like that and where he was hiding. Was it some kind of broadcast spell that allowed his voice to be heard over a distance or was he just invisible somewhere? Still, either spell would be very useful and she wondered if it was something she could learn?

She followed the other strangers through a line and was given a bowl of broth with noodles and chicken and vegetables, and two thin hunks of bread with what looked like melted cheese. She'd never seen anything like it, but it smelled delicious and her stomach let out a hungry growl in impatience.

Equipped with food, she glanced around uneasily, searching for a friendly face or somewhere quiet to sit. She spotted Keman speaking to several people and was hesitant to interrupt. Valyn was also occupied... with another female, of course. Shana frowned slightly, though she wasn't surprised, and wondered if this was the Rain person he'd spoken of?

Huffing slightly under her breath, she found an empty seat to sink down in and tore into her food with a vengeance.

(From here (http://community.livejournal.com/damned/211721.html?thread=14872841#t14874633))

Feeling completely miserable and rather self pitying, Valyn decided that at the very least, Shana would offer him sympathy. And if he 'dropped' his writing instrument, maybe she wouldn't talk. He could handle her staring at him. At least it would be positive attention.

Grumbling under his breath in a hoarse, rasping tone, the elven lord attempted to move his wheeled chair over. Without running anyone over or bumping into anything.

He made it close enough. And probably looked even more haggard than when he'd begun. Fine. Good, even. Let Max see what a poor, pathetic state she'd left him in.

"Shana!" he called out, wincing when he heard his own damage-roughened throat. He waved at her with his good hand. "Some help?"

Zabuza didn't feel very well. He had spent the last couple of shifts in his room, being sedated and restrained by the staff of day-time Landel's. The injuries he had suffered the bats his first night had proven to not have been completely healed during the mess. Not that he minded the pain. If anything he relished in it. He wasn't a masochist, but feeling pain meant that he was alive. They had finally let him out because he was scheduled to see his doctor after lunch and they thought it was best for him to eat something before going to see Wilson.

He moved into the room and found a place in the corner where he could actively watch Haku. He wanted to see how the boy was doing and if he was eating. He was talking to some of the men from the night before. That at least meant that Zabuza had someone to question about how the boy was doing.

He felt more out of place than ever before. He blamed it on the fact that during the day he wasn't allowed to cover his face, but in truth worry was clouding his mind so much that he didn't know how to process it.

He was silent and didn't bother with food. He wanted to talk to Haku.

[[Coming from Haku and Riddick]]

Sparda made his way over to Zabuza. Despite the fact that he knew that Zabuza had not been injured last night it looked like he wasn't doing very good.

He remembered the bulletin post from Zabuza earlier.

"Haku is fine," Sparda said as he took a seat, once again forgoing asking if he could seat himself. He was still slightly irritated over the way Riddick had been behaving.

"And ah, I do not believe we were ever formally introduced, I am Sparda."

"...thank you," Mukuro remembered to smile nicely at the woman who continued to insist he was Hitsuji Masato. Which stirred some half-dark memory he'd prefer to keep to himself and not at all related to a name. A sacrifice was needed, he remembered telling Hitsuji... his cycles weren't supposed to work in that sort of karma. He accepted the food and found a place to sit.

Never rush things, it was a principle of his. Everything happened as the wheel turned and if you rushed you'd fall off. This was not the Vendice, in fact it didn't resemble any of the Italian prisons he'd seen before, and didn't feel like Japan. Mukuro squinted at the grilled cheese for a moment and felt an odd feeling. It wasn't exactly a pain so much as a pressure in his right eye.

"...hooh?" He said to himself. The third, fourth and fifth realms seemed completely closed. Interesting.

As interesting as it was to have a conversation with someone who couldn't talk (or was at least barred from doing so due to injury - he hadn't been able to figure out which it was), Peter thought it might be easier to find someone to head out with at night if they didn't have to communicate through written messages.

Luckily, finding someone who was free and could speak wasn't hard. The difficult part was coming across someone who didn't have any plans for the night, and who would be willing to spend it with him. It still felt so weird to be looking for partners (he wasn't even sure if that was a good word for it), and the whole idea made him a little uncomfortable. Maybe it was stupid to keep hiding his powers here, but that was what was routine for him. He couldn't change it around so easily.

The fact that grilled cheese sandwiches were being served put him in a better mood, though. That would really hit the spot, as far as he was concerned. Once he grabbed one, he started wandering through the cafeteria, and was distracted when he saw someone who for one thing, was alone, and for another, seemed to be struggling - with what, he wasn't sure, but the stranger looked confused, and that was reason enough to pause and offer some assistance.

"Are you all right?" he asked, standing with his tray as he looked down at the boy.

Well, that art session had proved mighty fruitful! Peony'd gotten to talk to a nice kid (though his name seemed to escape him) and he'd produced a few pieces of fabulous art for his dresser! And his closet. And his door. And Jade's door and Gailardia's door and cute Cyrille's door too, oh yeah. Yes! Seven pieces of art in all, all beautifully colored and ready for transport to his abode.

Good thing all that creativity had worked up an appetite - these sandwiches looked great! The emperor got one of those, and - oh, what the heck - a side salad. And some soup, though there was a little voice in his mind saying that tomato was really the best kind to eat with grilled cheese.

But who was he to complain? It tasted good, he realized, as he seated himself at a lone table, studying his handiwork. Contrary to popular belief, Peony didn't spend all his time chasing girls; very often he decided that remaining with his cute rappigs was the best thing to do. And all he had in their stead was a set of drawings...

Oh, how he missed his little friends!

The cafeteria too crowded for Rika's tastes, as she was small and everyone else was... not. If Hanyuu was in this crowd, then Rika couldn't see her. It seemed that she would have to hope that Hanyuu would somehow find her and come to her.

On the other hand, Rika was also getting next to no information from her nurse, who kept calling her "Yukari" and insisting that she eat something before she asks more questions. In the end, Rika had no choice but to comply, and the nurse left her to find a seat. How irresponsible, really. Rika probably could have walked right out under her nose... except that was far too easy.

With a sigh, Rika decided to find someone who had hopefully been here longer than she was and get some information out of them. And she found a good someone to ask. He was built like Tomitake, and gazing lovingly at some handdrawn pictures. Rika hoped this meant that he liked children.

"Excuse me, sir," Rika chirped, trying to get the man's attention. "Rika-chama is a bit lost... Could you tell her what the date is?"

So far, Trevelyan had not had any luck in finding either Javert or Armand. Granted, the first thing he'd done was to check if his recently-pilfered steak knife was still in its pillowcase, which it was. Then he'd been rushed to breakfast by an eager nurse, and was promptly overwhelmed by pancakes. He'd taken a doze on a couch in the Sun Room (he needed to keep up his sanity as much as he could, after all), and almost as soon as he'd closed his eyes he was woken up and herded into the cafeteria.

The grilled cheese sandwiches looked good, so he took one. Why not? He hadn't had one in...well, longer than he could remember, anyway. They hadn't exactly been a specialty in the MI-6 canteen, nor in the one for his troops.

He scanned the area for Javert or Armand, wanting to talk to them about the previous night. Tonight they were going to get something, something a lot more valuable than steak knives.

[getting dragged in from here (http://community.livejournal.com/damned/211588.html?thread=14803588#t14803588)]

Thursday followed her nurse reluctantly. She didn't have much of a choice in the matter; she was having enough trouble staying upright, and trying to run for it seemed entirely out of the question.

Ordinarily her mind would have been whirling with thoughts - just where was this institute, and what was it, and why the hell had Goliath decided to stick her here of all places - but she couldn't bring herself to care at the moment. Allowing her thoughts to roam towards any direction that wasn't moving one foot in front of the other might very well cause her to tip over.

She looked blearily around in something resembling surprise as they entered the cafeteria; she hadn't expected nearly so many people to be here. Some of them looked vaguely familiar, but she couldn't for the life of her think where. Had these people managed to piss Goliath off, too? Or were they really as crazy as the staff seemed to think she was?

Thursday nearly bumped into her nurse; the woman had stopped at a mostly-empty table. "Here we are, Mrs. Bellman!" she said cheerfully, no hint of her earlier irritation in her voice, and set a loaded tray down in front of her. "I'll leave you with Mr. Dalton. Be good, both of you!"

Thursday slumped obediently into her seat. Ignoring the food - she was hardly in the proper condition to eat anything at the moment anyway - she looked across the table at the man across from her and blinked owlishly.

And then blinked again.

Maybe once more for good measure.

Haruhi looked around the room. Not seeing Tamaki, Hikaru, Kaoru, or Cliff, she took her food and sat down somewhere isolated. It was strange, well... she didn't know where to begin with what was strange.

She bit into a grilled cheese sandwich (so big! Quite good, but probably quite unhealthy). Haruhi had also picked up a bit of salad and some soup, and she realized eating it that it wasn't bad food at all. She'd expected something on par with most non-Ouran school cafeterias, but this was actually quite edible.

[identity profile] totallytheseme.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
"Haruhi!" Hikaru ran up to her, his soup sloshing all over his tray. "That guy didn't touch you...inappropriately, did he?"

If he did, there would be hell to pay.

Sai hoped the look he'd given Lee as the two of them were dragged off let the other boy know that their conversation needed to continue over the meal. He sat somewhere he'd be easily seen, glancing over his meal while he waited.

He didn't usually eat sandwiches that were so... large.

If he was lucky, Kakashi would have seen what he needed to on the bulletin board before he'd been pulled away also.

[identity profile] youthfulrocklee.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that was a bit untimely, thought Lee as his nurse chattered away about something as they were led to get lunch. Lee didn't look twice at his sandwich, however.

He sat down across from Sai, curious to hear what the other had to say.

[Waiting for Hughes!]

Ed was rather irritatedt at being dragged away from Axel so quickly. He was a little surprised to be enjoying the other man's company so much, but he wasn't condescending or sarcastic just because Ed was younger like so many adults here were. He rather appreciated it!

Still, the lure of more food was rather tempting and Ed only grumbled a little at the nurse who led him away. He piled his plate with a sandwich and many of the 'fries' that seemed quite tasty, and went over to an empty spot at one table.

[identity profile] felled-hero.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Hughes was trying not to worry about the little girl from the Arts and Crafts room. he grabbed his tray of food and looked out over the cafeteria. He spotted Ed, sitting alone for once.

Moving quickly, just in case someone got to the teen before he did, Hughes crossed the dining hall and dropped down into a seat across from him. He'd been wanting to talk to Ed for a while now, and just hadn't had a chance.

"Hey," he said. "You got some time to talk?"

Perhaps it was just the monotony getting to him, but Roy found that his day had been rather boring so far. He always ended up having the same discussions about the same topic, and he was coming to miss the time when he had moments where he could have a simple conversation.

He thrived on organizing and putting plans together, that much was true--but here he never got a break, and he got the feeling it would be a long while before he had down time. Maybe it was better to keep on the move, though, so he wouldn't get a chance to think about how tired he was.

After leaving a note on the bulletin board for Cooking Group sign-ups, Roy made his way into the cafeteria. As for food, the sandwich looked a bit too messy for his tastes, and so he got a large bowl of soup instead.

He looked for Hitusgaya before taking a seat, and saw the boy (though he wasn't actually one, but he didn't want to confuse himself) speaking with someone near the cafeteria's entrance. He knew that Hitsugaya wouldn't have forgotten their appointment, so the colonel found an empty table near the middle of the room and sat down to eat, figuring he would be joined by the other "club leader" once he was finished.

[From here (http://community.livejournal.com/damned/211721.html?thread=14890249#t14890249)]

He hated to keep meetings with interested parties brief, but there were quite simply not enough hours in the day for him to be able to offer more than a brief explanation. It was exhausting, all the work left to do, and there was still the horror of last night that slowly ate away at him.

He found Mustang sitting at a table and sat down across from him. "Good afternoon," he said, wondering if the other "club leader" felt as exhausted as he did.

The nurse led him down into a cafeteria, and Kratos thanked her calmly ("You're very welcome, Mr. Clarke.") before entering the lunch line. He was in truth terribly confused, but hiding emotions had always been something that had come easily to him.

Taking a tray, Kratos grabbed a bowl of the soup and a cup of water before walking toward the most vacant table possible and sitting down. Drowning out everything around him, the red-head then began the slow process of figuring out exactly what had happened to him in the span of ten minutes.

Lust was feeling a great deal better after her massage in the Sun Room. She'd have to keep an eye on the assassin. He could be useful at some point. Not seeing Scar or one of her usual companions in the cafeteria - or alone - she took her lunch and sat down across from some man she'd never seen before.

If he was someone new who was going to pester her with a multitude of questions....

Striding into the cafeteria again, Cloud mused over his conversation with Barret. It had been rather entertaining, even if he knew it had been dangerous at the same time. He had never let his mind question the sexuality of his companions, but the fact Rufus hit on Barret was a little laughable. It made him think a little more as well.

He really was not all that hungry, but he had a feeling he would regret not getting something to eat. He seated himself at a free corner of a far table and picked at the melted cheese from the sandwich. He had not eaten one of these since he was ten years old… a time he preferred to not remember.

Despite that, he really did not have to look around to know a certain presence was in the room. A dull ache seemed to always happen whenever he was around, an announcement better than any other. He wondered how fast the nurses really were and if Sephiroth still had the ability to fly. Still, he decided to keep to himself instead of chancing a scene.

Grilled cheese and soup? Just like mother used to make. Great. Nadine rolled her eyes as she took her tray and sat down at the closest available empty seat. Across from some guy she didn't know. Which described more than half of the people here, actually.

"So," Nadine said, never having been one for formal pleasantries, "what's your story?"

It was both a shame and a relief to see that just about everyone else was wearing the same silly pajamas as he was. There also seemed to be a fair number of cute girls as well, which made for a pleasant view, at least.

Dark scanned the cafeteria for a familiar face, but didn't see anyone that he recognized. He hadn't really expected to, but he still took a seat where he would have a good view of the room, just in case.

Of course, it would have been easier to just find a pretty face, but if his eyes drifted to girls faces often as he took in his surroundings, well, that was part of observing as well.

The lunch had had gotten seemed more like the sort of thing Daisuke would eat if he was sick, but it still looked good enough to Dark, especially because he hadn't realized that he was actually hungry. He supposed that came with having your very own body; eating before had only been a novelty if he happened to be able to take a girl out on a date.

Idly eating a few french fries to start, Dark continued looking about cafeteria.

Sadly, it seemed like most of the tables were already taken; Adelheid had hoped for a quiet corner to himself, but several different people also seemed to have that idea. So, with a sigh, he went through the line and resigned himself to having to sit next to someone. And if he had to, why not go with someone new? If they couldn't compare his new face with the old one- that was, if they didn't know what his right eye had looked like before it was removed- then the chances of being called on it were slight indeed.

The first person that Adelheid saw, in a table that was mostly open, was a rather good-looking man with quite an interesting sort of presence to him. And a strange reaction to the french fries. Well, that was good enough; good food sometimes made good company, and if he was polite, that should be enough. So, walking up to the table, Adelheid offered a quiet smile. "Excuse me," he said, "but do you mind if I sit here?"

Extra careful? Bella groaned out loud once she thought she was out of hearing distance of Edward, once she was led out of the art room again and once more brought to the cafeteria. His idea of careful was sending her out of the state! Who knew what “extra careful” meant?

The moment the smells from the food hit her nose, Bella came to the conclusion that she was not hungry. It felt like she had just eaten, anyway. Still, she knew Edward would throw a potential fit if she didn’t at least grab food to make it seem like she was eating. With that said, she grabbed at a sandwich and some water and then moved to yet another empty table. Now that she got all the bad stuff out of the way, she could hopefully move around easier.

Heiji's nurse pushed a tray of food firmly into his hands before giving him the "go find a seat" gesture. Great. High school all over again. He was a detective, not a social butterfly.

Find friends. That's what the bulletin post had said. But everyone seemed to be deep in conversation already. Heiji ran a hand through his hair. Jeez... this was dumb.

He spotted a nice-looking girl sitting by herself. Well, at least girls were more likely to take pity on a poor guy who didn't know what the heck was going on. He walked deliberately to her table.

"Hey," he said with a wide smile, "Mind if I sit with you?"

His conversation with Ken had put Yohji in a slightly better mood than he had been that morning. Their teasing and joking had made things feel like old times, happier times before things had gone to hell even worse than usual. And Ken had been there when Aya and Mamoru had been in Japan. He'd seen Yohji at his worst and didn't seem to hate him for it.

Ken was already talking to Aya when he got into the cafeteria and Yohji winced at the sight. Aya... fuck, he probably knew that something was wrong by now, would probably be pissed off at him. He'd fucked up once again.

Well, there went his good mood.

He poked at the food, taking a few bites of the sandwich, just enough to keep him going, before giving it up as a lost cause. He should probably talk to Omi, apologise... explain... He wasn't entirely sure which. Probably both although he wasn't sure how to explain that he'd spent last night fucking one of their greatest enemies and most of the rest of it getting drunk with the same enemy. He doubted it would go down too well.

ZEX had spent his time trying to decipher the paper that HK had given him without a great deal of success. Still, it gave him some hope that he could perhaps rework this body to fit his natural mind better... or at least maybe he wouldn't be so awkward forever. He hoped he'd get used to this soon.

One eye still squinted shut, he picked up the grilled cheese sandwich, then promptly burned himself on the cheese. He dropped it with a yelp, holding his new hand close to this chest. That was right, human skin was much more sensitive to temperature than his own... their climate didn't vary as wildly, and their skin wasn't as thick. Humans were so delicate, and that ZEX was willing to respect and explore as required... when he was in his own body. The frailty of human nature was still something that surprised him at every turn, even after all this time. At least humans got some years to learn how to use their bodies when they were born. ZEX had no such luck.

The soup at least resembled something that ZEX was used to eating, but without his trunk and tongue, he wasn't sure how to eat it. How would humans drink a liquid like this without a trunk? The glasses of fluid were easy to lift, but the bowl seemed more tricky. ZEX stared intently at the utensils on his plate. One of these must have been important... perhaps the small rounded one?

ZEX dipped the spoon in the soup, attempted to raise it to his mouth, and spilled it right back into the bowl. He sighed. Well, practice would make perfect...

Separated from Lyta and with Kimbley still on his mind, Envy searched for the mad alchemist to little avail. Finally giving up with the knowledge that his search was fruitless for the time being (And even so, he needed to work up some kind of tactic for bribing Kimbley into working with them) and that hot food generally didn't taste good after cooling down, he sat, not really noticing who he was sitting with.

And an odd surprise when his mind snapped back into the immediate present and saw the man across the table from him, who seemed to be... honestly struggling at finding which way was up with his utensil.

Seemed this guy really did have the mental disfunction nessecary to be here. Envy smirked with a bit of cruel amusement. Truly simple mentally disturbed humans like this were kind of cute in a sprawling-helpless-insect kind of way; at least up until they got annoying, which was pretty fast. But Envy had once been fond of masquerading as them to collect information; it was amazing the kind of secrets people tended to spill in front of the village idiots.

"Having fun?" He remarked chidingly.

(unwittingly waiting for Yuber)

By the time Reno made it to the cafeteria, his mood had evened itself out some. He could spot Rufus with Barret (actually getting along despite last night—goddamn miracle if he ever saw one), but left the two alone, opting to settle in an empty table instead. At least he had plans to meet Elena later on. Having constantly surrounded himself with the other Turks for so long, he felt a distinct lack of their presence whenever they disappeared off for any significant amount of time.

Giving his food a suspicious poke, he took a bite.

The past conversation with Logan had left Yuber in a rather good mood. Yet again it always ended up amusing him to know that despite being from different realms, those who followed Order were so very similar. Entering back into the cafeteria area, then knight out rightly ignored the offered food for the patients, and instead began to saunter his way between the tables. There weren’t many who grabbed his attention at present, and Yuber almost considered moving off to find his own place to sit before a shock of red hair caught his attention.

In all honesty his good mood would have simply been wasted if he’d decided to sit by himself, and the prospect of gaining potentially useful information out of another was well worth the effort of socialising. Pulling out the seat opposite the red head, Yuber casually sat himself down as he regarded the other with a lazily amused expression. “I take it you’re not one to trust the food they provide?”

[Waiting for Kuri-kun]

Hiei was livid, barely noticing what he was putting on his tray as he scanned the room for Kurikara. Submissive, obedient; oh, Hiei had every intention of showing the dragon exactly how well those terms suited his personality.

Not seeing his target of choice, Hiei took a seat where he had as full of a view of the room as he could manage, his food remaining untouched as he waited.

[identity profile] hotlittledragon.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Kurikara was hungry again. His talk with the blue-haired man at breakfast had left a bad taste in his mouth - the conversation itself had been civil, but the thought...he couldn't wrap his brain around it. People without hearts. He refused to accept it.

But he'd spent a whole shift brooding over it, and that was quite enough. He could almost feel Hiei glaring when he entered the room. He wasn't hard to spot. Kurikara hesitated, glancing over at their supposed meeting first. He really wasn't interested right now.

He approached his demon, very ready to move if Hiei decided to attack first and explain later. He offered a cocky smirk that said one thing: whatever I did, I'm probably proud of it.

The cafeteria was packed. Raiden should have been expecting that based on how many other rooms he had passed, but he was in something of a daze.

So all of these people weren't well in the head, either? All of these people had a diminished sense of reality, just like he supposedly did? That should have made him feel better (he wasn't alone), but he didn't feel any closer to them just because they had something in common. In fact, it was pretty depressing to think that there were so many people who had lost their hold on life.

His nurse made an effort to get him to sit with someone else, and to get something to eat, but he denied both suggestions. He could be stubborn as a bull when he wanted, and he was managed to keep coiled tight enough that he didn't completely lose it and throw a fit. He was too removed from everything to have a reaction like that.

Right now, he just wanted to sit and let everything sit in. He searched out an empty spot in the mess hall, took a seat, and stared down at the table as he tried to order his thoughts.

Jake Edwards. It didn't ring any bells, but that didn't mean it wasn't true. It wouldn't make sense for the Patriots to do this. They wanted him to be useful, so locking him up in an institute and trying to make him think he was someone else wouldn't do them much good.

So maybe the Patriots didn't exist to begin with. Maybe Raiden didn't exist. Maybe Jack didn't exist.

It was kind of embarrassing for Ashton, having a nurse wheel him from location to location. Then again, just about everything was embarrassing for Ashton, including the sudden realization that his original idea of sword-loops for patients' pants would cause whoever used the loops to be quickly de-pantsed. Being a handy seamster himself, he'd made two nice felt belts during Arts and Crafts to remedy that issue: one purple felt belt with two loops and one blue felt belt with one big loop. His nurse had even helped him put his fabulous purple creations on, too! Ah, it was pretty cool to be nice to the nurses sometimes, even though he imagined if many people got wind of it he'd be somewhat embarrassed about that, too.

So adorned with his newest handicraft, the recently-disabled swordsman didn't particularly want to take the pill his nurse had given him for the pain, but she insisted, and wouldn't let him get his coveted soup-sandwich combo until he'd downed it with a glass of water.

Nothing they did to him during the day would hurt him.. right? Well, at least he.. he hoped so.

So Ashton requested to be left with the first person he saw sitting alone; he was hungry and wanted to eat as soon as possible, and this guy looked pretty sad, besides. Maybe, anyway. He was staring at the table, after all! Poor guy!

"Hello! Hope you don't mind if I sit here - cause I sure can't stand!" He was really making light of his injury.

((Waiting for Cliff!))

Okay, so breakfast hadn't been that uplifting. And last shift had been downright depressing. But Claude liked to think that the rest of the day would be better. He only had the afternoon to kill before nightshift came around, and then he could focus on things like weapons and finding a way out of here. Things everyone could relate to, no matter where they came from, or what they remembered.

He was sorry his conversation with Leon had been cut short, but, judging by how he was eating lunch with one of the other captives, Claude figured he was all right for now. He idly wondered how Ashton's talk with Dias had gone, but now wasn't really the time to find out. Claude had agreed to meet up with Cliff during lunch, and he didn't want to risk missing the man.

After grabbing some food (which looked rather tasty, actually), Claude took a seat at an empty table and promptly began to chow down. He didn't see Cliff anywhere yet, so he was willing to wait on him until he showed up.

[identity profile] gotahunch.livejournal.com 2007-09-29 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Cliff yawned. He was either getting very lazy or very old. If Yohji was around, he could have argued that it took too much effort to look good all the time. Things were a little sketchy between them though, and he didn't want to get into that just before his meeting with Claude.

His mood had improved drastically after seeing Haruhi. Sure, he hated seeing her back here but it was something to know the kid was safe and sound. From the message board, it sounded like Kurosaki was back too. Cliff's imagination hadn't been good to him lately, but if two kids could make it alright, Nel might as well be learning the finer points of plastic explosives.

"Geez, I could be late for my own funeral." Cliff murmured. He grabbed a tray of food and gave Claude a little wave when he approached the table. "'Afternoon. You wanted to talk?"

As the nurse moved him to the cafeteria L decided that now was as good a time as ever to bring up his injury. He wanted to know just how the nurse would explain the monsters roaming around at night. He looked up at her as she pushed his wheel chair outside of the arts and crafts room. “I think it is within my right to know; how did I receive this injury?”

Her voice was sympathetic, "Oh you don't even remember! You poor thing. You had a nasty run in with one of the cats. It happens sometimes, don't you worry, you'll be back on your feet in no time."

Cats? Those things he had run into last night were certainly not any breed of cat he had seen before. In fact, they looked like a new species entirely. “Where did this event take place?” He inquired.

"It was while you were coming back for dinner, dear, in the hallway. Some of those little fuzzballs get so frisky around dinnertime! He must have thought your foot made an excellent toy. Now why don't you enjoy your lunch, hmm?" She said. L realized that she was trying to avoid any further questioning, but he still had plenty of things to ask her. He wasn’t about to let the opportunity go.

So a single cat had done this? That was highly unlikely. “I will eat when I am clear on the situation.” L said unemotionally, “It appears that I received quite an injury for the work of a single feline. Could you explain what exactly the cat was doing to make this injury so bad?”

"Cats have very sharp teeth. It bit you, of course. And it got its teeth in good. There's nothing more to say, dear." She responded.

Clearly this wasn’t the truth, L was still not done, and he looked up at her trying to look as innocent as he could, “I am just curious as to how many teeth this cat had. I doubt would be healthy with so many…unless that is to say that he bit me more than once?”

"It had its teeth in good dear and it gnawed, it's much worse than it looks. Now I have other patients I need to see to and I've answered your questions and now it's time for you to eat your lunch." She made to leave, but L grabbed a hold of her sleeve before she could escape.

“I am sorry to hold you up. I can see that my leg was quite gnawed on. I am just curious; what were you doing during this time?”

"Trying to get the cat to leave you be, of course! Now, here." The nurse reached into her pocket and pulled out a wrapped peanut butter cup. "Go eat your lunch, I really do have to see to my other patients." L took the small piece of chocolate. Was this bribery? Either way, it had worked. His nurse had managed to walk away the second L had the candy placed into his hand. Frowning, he rolled his wheel chair to a nearby table. He had barely begun to question her about anything. The day was not turning out to be as good as he had hoped.

While he sat there waiting for Light to show up, he picked the wrapper free of his piece of candy and shoved it unceremoniously into his mouth. He hoped that he would get to talk to him during this shift. He had something for him.

(Nurses comments povided by Fey!)

Time for some damage control. Light doubted that anything crucial to the Kira case had been discussed (yet), but since preparing for the worst had served him well enough in the past, he knew he needed to talk to L and nix whatever theories that could have sprung up about his conversation with Misora earlier that day before they could fully take root-- if any existed, that is. From what he'd heard last shift, Misora hadn't said anything that would make L suspect him more than he already did, but with the contents of their written communication still a closed book to him, it would be safer to speak with him and reassess the situation before moving on.

Besides, it was only natural that he'd be curious about her since the two of them had hit it off right after Misora had looked like she'd been ready to dump him out of his wheelchair and run him over with it if he didn't given her the answers she'd wanted. L was aware that he'd been eavesdropping (which he'd act appropriately shamefaced about, of course) and that he could piece together some of the story from what he'd heard, but both of them knew that it was better to hear all the facts rather than a select few.

With these thoughts in mind (and more than a few possible explanations forming in case Misora had written something suspicious), he went to get some of the grilled cheese sandwiches, french fries, and so on that were available before making his way towards L. Unsurprisingly, the detective had spurned that food in favor of some candy that he had to have gotten from his nurse (Light made a mental note to get some from his own nurse at the earliest opportunity), but since that was hardly enough to keep him going, L earned himself a disapproving frown before Light had even arrived at the table and sat down.

"Ryuga, is that all you're going to eat?" he asked, seating himself across from him. "I know you had some of the pancakes at breakfast, but you're going to need more than that if you want to stay healthy. Even if the food here isn't as sweet as the kind you normally eat, it's better than nothing, isn't it?" His expression stated clearly that there was more he wanted to say, probably about how the change in L's diet would benefit him more anyway since it would mean that he wasn't consuming several times his body weight in pure cake, but he managed to keep himself from voicing those thoughts. He was such a good friend, really.

Sasuke was going to wreck the Institute, destroy all of its experiments, ensure that Sharingan's secret was safe, in that order. Before all of that, though, he was going to kill his nurse and bury her body in a way that wouldn't allow reincarnation.

"Oh, look, the food -- oh, I'm sorry, Sean, there I go again -- well, today we have some delicious sandwiches and ..."

Somehow, he didn't kill her, and she managed to load his tray with a lot of food that smelled like its primary ingredient was grease. With difficulty, he managed to dissuade her from introducing him to "some new friends, Sean, they'll be good for you!"

Her voice was dubious as she left -- something about hoping that a friend or someone nice would come talk to him -- and Sasuke tuned her out more completely, finding and picking up a sandwich. It seemed to be pure cheese, something Sasuke didn't really like (he tended towards the more traditional foods), but it was edible enough.

Munching without tasting the food, he tested his hearing, focusing on what Aidou had said: don't think about processing everything. Feel the sound and let your body react.

He was still tempted to flicker into Sharingan and record chakra signatures all around, though. He probably always would be.

As short as his time was, Kakashi had seen all he needed by the time he was pulled away from the board. He followed his nurse back to the cafeteria, where he was silent as she filled his tray with food; aside from deciding it best to go along with everything, he was beginning to feel a slight pang of hunger -- how long had it been since he last ate? -- so despite that the main course didn't look healthy by any means and he normally wouldn't have touched such a thing without prior knowledge, Kakashi accepted the meal and headed back towards the tables.

He spotted Sai and Lee easily enough and started over, but was still a good distance away when yet another familiar profile caught his attention.

Sasuke?

Yes, Sasuke. He hadn't changed much in three years -- assuming that whole time period issue didn't come into play -- but he seemed taller from what Kakashi could tell from the given angle. His abrupt appearance and the overall un-Sasuke-like look about him, though, was what had Kakashi wondering at first.

Slowing slightly, he hesitated for only an instant before changing direction. Without any real greeting or invitation to sit down, he slid into the seat directly across from Sasuke, but out of either respect or personal knowledge, Kakashi kept his gaze fixed nonchalantly on his tray as though uninterested.

"You're as independent as ever," he acknowledged lightly, referring to Sasuke's lack of company. "Although I'll admit I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing in these circumstances, even for you."

Escorted back into the cafeteria by the damn nurses, Alucard tipped his tray of food over into the bin before sitting down. Idling and chatting in the Arts and Crafts room was it's own fun, but now the vampire wanted to see his Master. And maybe show her the picture he had drawn a good hour before, it was superficial, but he felt a little sense of pride in a way.

He sat down on one of the unoccupied benches with nothing on his plate. So far those twittering fools had let him skip all three meals unnoticed -well, sometimes he decided to take a small bite or two- and hopefully this would hold up for the rest of his stay.

While he had his head on the table in an apparently listless posture, Alucard was observing the door intently, glancing to the other three corners of the room to see if anyone else was approaching.

Luffy was in a relatively chipper mood at the moment. And why not? It was lunch time, which was basically one of the few things dayshift was honestly good for. True, arts and crafts and napping were good, but those only kept him entertained for so long before his mind wandered back to the tasty things he'd be eating later, and the adventures nightshift held in store.

Today's lunch smelled particularly good, and he enthusiastically loaded his plate with as much food as the Cat Ladies would allow. Then he made his way towards the tables, an easy grin on his face. The pirate didn't waste much time looking for anyone specific to sit with. Instead, he chose the first person he saw. In fact, it was almost impossible to miss this guy because he was just so tall! What, was he part giant or something?

Man, that would be so cool. This place needed giants around here!

"Hey there, Mister!" he said brightly, and he plopped his tray down across from the incredibly tall man. "Your plate is empty already? Wow, I guess that meal must've been nothing for you, huh?" He narrowed his eyes a little. "But you can't have any of mine, though. Just so you know."

As he found himself being ushered into the cafeteria again (a new day in this place again and everything), Ravi briefly wondered where everyone else got their time to get some decent sleep around here from, when they spent all night wandering around to get things done and all day doing other things. (He thought he could use a couple more hours, truthfully.) That Hitsugaya kid, for example, sounded like he was busy all the time, no matter what shift it was. No wonder people had to keep figuring things out to make sure they knew when to squeeze what in.

Well, if they all ended up getting somewhere with all this, it all worked out just fine, right?

Stepping into the cafeteria, Ravi glanced around. Maybe Allen or Aya or another familiar face was already around. In spite of (or maybe because of) the memory of the previous night's events, he wanted to track down Allen to check up on the guy. That weird ghost had affected Allen pretty badly for a while there, right?

As for the sudden reminder he'd gotten himself... Well, it wasn't going to help to dwell on things right now.

Before Ravi could continue keeping an eye out for Allen just yet, he noticed another familiar face - only one he hadn't exactly been expecting to see. He stared as he saw someone who was without a doubt Kanda getting dropped off at one of the tables. That is, it sure looked exactly like Kanda, just not in his usual exorcist uniform, which wasn't a surprise here, but since when did Kanda let people drag him around like that and just... flop down at a table?

Ravi made his way over to that table and stopped beside it to peer at the other boy, reaching out to poke him in the shoulder - partly to see if he was going to get a normal reaction. "Yuu? What're you doing there? Not sure that's the greatest place to be sleeping."

Grilled cheese and soup? Were they serious? Steve beamed as he snatched up a hefty portion of food - maybe this place wasn't so bad after all. Ashford never gave them food on a regular basis and if he did, it was questionable as to what was in said food. Most of the time, Steve just avoided the slop and bartered with Rodrigo whenever he had the chance. So, to have real food just thrown at him was kind of a god-send.

Once he was finished picking out what he wanted, he decided to find a seat at the edge of a table some where. He didn't really know any of these people and it looked like that "Wesker" fellow had his own band gathered around him and Burnside couldn't even find Siegfried.

It seemed as though she'd barely finished breakfast and headed to the lounge before it was time to tromp back into the cafeteria. Elphaba wasn't hungry, and had no inclinations to obtain food she had no desire to eat (Frex had attempted to convince her long ago that wasting food, among other things, was a sinful action, and her winters in Kiamo Ko during the famines had made her father's sanctimonious speeches a little more realistic). She obtained a glass of milk, and sat down at an empty table.

The empty table reminded her even more of her days at Shiz, and she thought, momentarily, or sitting down at a more occupied table. She mentally scolded herself, "Have you learned nothing in all your years? It is not worth the agony to go about making friends like an empty-headed twit. They are good for information and information only."

Still, she found herself missing the chatter of Chistory and his brood and even Liir's unsubtle observations.

The soup seemed to be from a can; that was a disappointment, but Anthy wasn't going to complain. Perhaps being polite would win her the opportunity to make her own food. (And hopefully, some for Utena, once they found each other again. And for her new friend Ami- where were both those girls?)

She came upon a girl who seemed to be set off to herself, with only a glass of milk, looking rather uninclined to socialize. Anthy immediately felt for her; it had been difficult to deal with being in the midst of so many people, but she was mostly beyond her fears (She had graduated after all!) The girl didn't seem to have exactly the same sentiments as she'd once had, but that didn't stop Anthy from settling down at the same table.

"Not hungry?" She asked, inoffensively.
