Day 27: Lunch

Renji wasn't so certain what this grilled cheese thing was all about, but he liked the sound of some soup. Even if it was strange western soup, well... there wasn't anything bad people could do to soup, in his experience. His good mood was starting to fray at the edges, a little, from the strain of dealing with the Ichimaru issue, and even more from what had been on the bulletin board earlier.

He'd never had difficulty simply writing something before. But...

He shook his head as he entered the line. He didn't want to think about it. He wanted to hold on to the tenuous equilibrium he'd managed to find.

Renji got himself a large bowl of soup, water, and even one of those sandwiches, just to try it. Old habit, recently awakened, had him over to one side of the cafeteria, where the fewest people possible would have the chance to pass behind him. He sat there with his back toward the wall and started eating.

Did he like them? An odd question asked in an odd tone. This guy was too funny.

"Well, there was my friend sloth, but she wasn't a guy, and wasn't always tentacle-y," If they were using that word, might as well make a running gag out of it. There had also been a time when the scientists in the Fifth Lab experimented with making chimeric hybrids of sea creatures, but the resulting creations didn't survive long exposed to dry air. He'd only briefly seen the octopus man wriggling and gasping just before he dried out and died; it had been too pathetic of a sight for him to bother staying long, but some of the alchemists, as sick-minded as they were, had been so disturbed that they went into shock and their work slowed down considerably. On that level, Envy could say he certainly didn't like that particular tentacle-y guy, for being such a nuisance with his death.

That was neither here, nor there, however.

"I agree. I used to have so many different shapes, and now I'm just stuck with one. Total bummer." Envy rested his cheek on his propped up fist, for the first time actually finding amusement in his situation. He did look insane, didn't he?

"Ah, a shame." Although, it seemed that Envy was still fairly open to the concept of tentacle-y guys. That was more than ZEX could say for most humans. And either way, now that he was human his appearance didn't matter as much as it used to...

"Different shapes?" ZEX tried to think of what that could mean. "I've known a few races that could alter their forms with proper effort. The Umgah are very skilled at genetic manipulation, for example."
