Day 27: Lunch

Renji wasn't so certain what this grilled cheese thing was all about, but he liked the sound of some soup. Even if it was strange western soup, well... there wasn't anything bad people could do to soup, in his experience. His good mood was starting to fray at the edges, a little, from the strain of dealing with the Ichimaru issue, and even more from what had been on the bulletin board earlier.

He'd never had difficulty simply writing something before. But...

He shook his head as he entered the line. He didn't want to think about it. He wanted to hold on to the tenuous equilibrium he'd managed to find.

Renji got himself a large bowl of soup, water, and even one of those sandwiches, just to try it. Old habit, recently awakened, had him over to one side of the cafeteria, where the fewest people possible would have the chance to pass behind him. He sat there with his back toward the wall and started eating.

Oh, the rather curious man had a friend here. Delightful. Lust turned her attention to her sandwich, eyeing the woman with a mild expression. Well, she could answer all of his questions, then.

He didn't even need to turn around to figure out who had just spoken his name. Her reaction- he couldn't quite place a finger on a word to describe it, but he knew it wasn't "pleased"- was almost as he had expected it to be. After all, he had been their enemy for...some time.

Kratos sighed. "Hello, Miss Sage. Surprised to see me?"

"Not as much as you might think." She sighed and sat down next to him; she didn't see Momo yet, so she had a few moments. "I imagine you just got here..."

She wished it had been nearly anyone in the party but Kratos, but... it had been so long since she saw him, most of the anger had faded. He wasn't surprised at her reaction, so that meant--when was he from?

"This may sound a little strange, but what's the last thing you remember?"

Kratos took another slow spoonfull of soup. "I was still at Dirk's house; you had all previously left for Derris-Kharlan- for the final battle."

He gave her a look of slight amusement, although his features quickly rearranged themselves back to their neutral position. "Does that differ from what you remember me last doing?"

"Time is strange here," Raine replied, trying not to visibly tense--Kratos was from after she'd been taken. "I've been here just under a week, and the last thing I recall is going to the Tower of Salvation again... none of us were certain we would make it out alive. Have you seen Genis lately? How is he?"

She'd answer all the questions he was bound to have in a minute. For now, she just needed to know how her little brother was faring. He had to be okay, or she'd... well, she didn't know. But it wouldn't be pleasant.

[identity profile] spandexorgtfo.livejournal.com 2007-09-29 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
"The Tower of Salvation...ah, I see." Yes, he remembered those particular events well enough; they were fairly recent. It was a bit relieving to know that Raine already knew of all his buried connections with Lloyd- it would mean less awkward explaining in the future.

And ah, how typical of her to ask after her brother. He knew that he would have done the same with Lloyd had she come from a time frame later than his.

"I am in no position to speak for your brother's mind, but he seemed physically well enough when he left with the rest of you."

Raine relaxed; that was really what had bothered her the most here. She missed Genis badly and wanted to see him for herself, but--knowing he was all right still helped.

"It sounds like I've missed a few things," she said. She honestly wasn't sure if she should ask, being well aware what a time paradox was, but--it was also possible they weren't from the same timeline.

She wasn't sure if she wanted to know, on the other hand, so she asked, "What have you been told?"

[identity profile] spandexorgtfo.livejournal.com 2007-09-29 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
"Mmm...indeed." He had a feeling that the Professor wanted to know those missing "few things", but Kratos knew that at the moment he wasn't quite ready to talk about them. If she pressed him though, he grudgingly admitted that he would give in.

"...about this place? Not much. Besides the bulletin board, only that nighttime is dangerous and that there is no clear 'entrance'. The purpose of this 'Landel's' I'm not quite sure of yet."

[identity profile] per-ardua.livejournal.com 2007-09-29 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
"No one's certain of the purpose, but I have to say I'm reminded of both human ranches and the Imperial Research Academy," Raine replied, a little quietly. "None of the theories are more than guesses, but it seems most likely that this is some sort of experiment." She looked at her Exsphere; no one from worlds besides her own seemed to have one, but then, she hadn't asked. It was reasonably likely Reinforce would know something... she also made a mental note to see what Valyn and Keman knew, considering the coincidences between their worlds made her wonder.

"If you haven't noticed, our magic is much weaker here--I haven't had this little magic since shortly after I started learning it." She hesitated, wondering if she should ask about his wings, but decided he might not want everyone in Landels knowing he was an angelic being. "Consequently, going out alone isn't a good idea; find a group and go around with them. I'm waiting for a healer' meeting to start--you could sit in on that." He should at least have First Aid left to him, so he wouldn't be an outsider.

[identity profile] spandexorgtfo.livejournal.com 2007-09-29 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well that's particularly reassuring," Kratos remarked wryly. No wonder they were supposed to be at a disadvantage: no scientist wanted their test subjects to be of greater power than them.

"And I have never been much of a healer, Miss Sage, but I hope you don't mind if I accept your 'offer'." Usually he would have preferred to act on his own, but if what people had been telling him was true, he was going to have to change his habits.

[identity profile] per-ardua.livejournal.com 2007-09-29 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"We need all the help we can get," Raine pointed out. "Anything you can offer should be useful." Besides that, he would likely learn at least some of what he needed to know at the meeting, and he should start making connections now if possible.

Someone moving towards the table she'd been watching caught her eye and she looked up; it seemed the healers' meeting was starting. "That's likely Hinamori Momo, the head of the group; I'm sure she'll welcome new people." She stood up; she needed to actually get some food (assuming she could eat anything at the moment), but then she'd join them.
