Day 36: Intercom, Evening

The intercom's jingle rang out and the somewhat uninhibited movement that was going on between the main activity rooms halted as the Head Doctor made one of his usual announcements.

"Good evening everyone, and I'm very pleased to see so many of you in such high spirits after meeting with your loved ones! However, like with all good things, it can't last forever, so I ask now for nurses to escort our patients in the waiting rooms and in the main areas back to their rooms, where they will be treated with a special Sunday... steak! That's right: today, we'll be serving juicy, delicious steak with fries and cooked vegetables on the side – simple enough for everyone to like and good enough for everyone to thoroughly enjoy! (Our patients with specialized diets will receive their alternate meals, of course.) Our usual beverages are available, and for dessert, we'll be serving warm slices of apple pie.

"After all, patients, t's always wonderful to see all of you cooperating with the staff even when given so much freedom, so I'd like to personally thank and congratulate all of you for helping us, your family, and more importantly, yourselves. Hopefully, we can help you to a speedy recovery so that you can see your loved ones more often, but first... dinner! I hope to speak with you all again soon."

The intercom clicked off.

[ All room threads go in response to this post; please post your character's room number as the subject line of the initial post. Thank you!

On an added note, just wanted to clarify to players of characters who are canonly vegetarians and the like that you get to decide (within reasonable and realistic limits) what kind of diet your character gets from the staff. :3 ]

Hanyuu had been sweet. That had been just what Tokito needed, after that nasty fit he'd had the shift after brunch. And now, he got to eat! He was almost in a good mood, or at least as good as the circumstances allowed. There was pie for dessert, which definitely didn't hurt.

Now if he could just figure out how to get something done tonight.

Jamie was looking forward to the meeting tonight in M3, as much as he could truly look forward to anything here, he supposed; collating and examining information to concoct a more effective course of action was, after all, part of his job back home, so doing the same here when given the option just made sense.

He glanced to Tokito as he entered their room and seated himself to start on his dinner. "What'd you have planned for tonight?" he asked, without preamble. "That guy, Valyn - he posted something up on the bulletin board for us. Said he'd be willing to help us out again if we wanted him to."

Allelujah was a little disappointed when the nurses carted him away from Brooklyn before he could find out how to play the card game. The nurse insisted on grabbing his arm again, looking shocked as usual when he pulled away from her. Why didn't she seem to get the idea that he hated being touched Especially by medical staff. Ugh, he obviously wasn't having a good day today, considering the state that his temper was in.

He was eager to check on the state of the smoke bombs, but held off for now and started on his meal, not wanting a nurse to catch him with them when they brought Fai to the room. That would probably make them search the room and there was too much that he could lose. He was a little baffled that everything was still there. It wasn't exactly inconspicuous. It gave him the unsettling feeling that they were allowing him to keep them because they didn't think it would do any good. That was not a good thought.

His meeting with Ashura had left him shaken. Though he might have wanted to simply break down, his body wouldn't comply, and simply sat in the chair like a broken doll as the nurses wheeled him down the hallway and back to his room. He had to have help to get into bed and the nurse placed a tray on his lap with some food and even helped cut the meat into pieces before she left, but Yuuhi had no appetite for it.

When the door closed, it took an effort to smile over at his roommate before he went back to pushing the food around on his plate with his fork.

Once Tsubaki had been brought back to her room, she pulled out the blank journal she'd last seen inside the desk, and... put it aside next to the tray. The food sitting there--though made and served by people she couldn't exactly trust--did smell good, and she'd need the meal to keep her energy up.

As much as she wanted to somehow address all the thoughts spinning around in her head, she sat down and began to eat first. Cooked vegetables were easier to pick up with a plastic fork, at any rate.

There probably wouldn't be time to savour the meal. How long had it been between dinner and lights out the other night? She sipped some water to get down a particularly big piece of steak and thought, not long. And before she could leave to meet Matsumoto and Ichimaru, the two club members she'd be working with, she'd need to prepare. Meaning continuing her meditation from that morning.

Figuring out if she'd been adversely affected by anything was too important.

She ate in silence, expecting Michiru to return eventually. Hopefully the other girl wouldn't mind if Tsubaki didn't have the time to talk much.

Well, if there was one solid conclusion he was coming to, it was that like Kirihara, Melissa could use a good companion around here, someone to balance her out and keep her out of trouble. With any luck, she wouldn't end up like Kirihara in that she up and disappeared one day. Like Roy Mustang.

With a low sigh, the doll slid into place at his desk, picking his fork up in his left hand and a pen in his right. He had maps to copy out for Roy's replacement.

It seemed like of those people he'd personally talked to, half of them had gone missing already. Maybe it was about time to check in with the other half. Tonight, though, he'd have to see the maps got to their destination safely, and then...

Anybody's guess, after that.

Harry was still feeling shaken after seeing his father alive again, acting like nothing out of the ordinary had happened. He'd acted so normal, so much like Norman had when he was alive, that Harry was beginning to question his own sanity.

Meekly following the nurse back to his room, which was thankfully empty, he sat down at the desk and started mechanically eating his dinner, mind spinning with questions.

If his father was alive, what had he been hearing speak to him for the past year? Maybe he really was crazy? But what about Peter? Why was he here? His father had mentioned an accident that nearly killed him and a friend. What if that was it? What if he'd done something to hurt Peter and put them both in here? But then, what about Eddie, who knew far too many personal details about him and Peter for it to be a fluke or anything else he could think of.

The fact that the sedatives he'd been given were beginning to wear off didn't help matters at all, it just made it easier for him to brood over everything that had happened today. There was only one solution. He needed to find Peter, tell him about Norman and get some answers about Eddie. Peter was good at making sense of things.

He just had to wait until the doors opened and he could see Pete.

Forte asked to be able to be able to check the board one last time before leaving, but soon his nurse pulled him away, without much resistance, and brought him to his room, where he mostly ignored the other man there (he'd seen him before, but only briefly at the beginning and ends of the days), as he was getting ready for the night.

His was finally starting to clear from the sedatives, and while he tried to stop thinking about doppelgänger he tried the food before him - the steak was delicious, and he felt much better for eating it. He tried to eat as quickly as he could without choking, so he could be ready when the doors unlocked.

'She came to see you.'

"Shut up."

'She's real, Nny. This is real. Why not take advantage of it?'

"I said shut up!!"

The careful control that Nny had shown in the Sun Room all but collapsed the moment he entered his room. He'd seen Devi. She'd come to see him. It wasn't his Devi, but it was still Devi....or maybe she was his. Had they brain-washed her? Maybe he could find her and-

No, no, why was he even thinking about this? He didn't care for her anymore, didn't feel anything. Anything. She seemed happy, or at least happier than she'd been before. Who was he to take that away from her? No, Devi was a non-issue, despite what the mocking voice told him. The real problem was getting out of this hell-hole. If the meeting with Devi showed him anything, it was that he didn't have as much control as he thought he did.

He hated not having control.

Nny grabbed the plastic knife and fork from his plate and positioned himself next to the door. He wanted answers, and there was a chance his roommate had noticed something he hadn't. He also wanted to blow off some steam, but that didn't sound as good.

Dante had spent the day talking around, going wherever, eating. His most interesting encounter had been Falis during breakfast. He hoped he'd run into more bounty hunters or girls like her anyway-- he didn't like the rest of these stiffs.

"Whatever, man, whatever." He muttered in annoyance as the nurses shoved him into his room (unwillingly; "Goddamn, it's not even eight PM, come on!" he had said) and brought him dinner. Yeah, yum yum. This institute crap was horrible. He almost wanted to go back to Doyleton.

Everyone else had gotten visitors today. Dante wasn't surprised there was no one to see him. Who the hell would want to? Vergil? Hell, he would have been perfectly fine seeing Lady, even if she just shot him in the head for old time's sake. And without his powers, hell, hopefully it woulda killed him.

The nurses opened the door and ushered in that anorexic guy he was roommates with, Johnny C. "Man, the happy vibes coming off you are just blinding, Johnny. There's such a thing as being too cheerful." This was a jab, of course, because Nny at this time looked angry and possibly murderous. Not like the plastic fork was all that threatening, But Dante was wearing a sweater, so all Nny could really tell was that Dante was pretty tall, his muscular physique hidden in the baggy clothing.

Archer sluggishly entered his room. He just didn't have much energy. After his little session with... Izzy, Archer was left mentally tired. What was he doing, playing into their hand like that? It was pathetic.

His fork lazily shuffled the food around on his plate. The fries were the easiest, since they were, surprisingly, the lightest.

Brook wasn't quite sure what he felt upon returning to his room. That visitor had certainly been strange, to say the least. He wasn't even sure about that so how was he supposed to be sure about anything else?!

What he was sure of was the scent of food that caught in his nose upon entering. Food was food was food no matter how you looked at it! Ah, and so was his roommate!

Whom he owed an apology.

He didn't enter as cheerily as he might have since both he and Archer by the looks of it were not in the best of moods. "Good evening to you, Archer-san. I apologize for last night. Things just didn't seem to want to go anybody's way." He took a seat slowly on his bed, looking across.

Lia's first act as she arrived in the thankfully still-empty room, once the nurse had shut the door and bustled off to her other duties, was to retrieve her flashlight from the closet. It made a mediocre club at best, but it was better than nothing, and she settled it inside a slightly-open drawer of her desk, resting her open journal over it. She had intended to look over her sketches, but it was hard to keep her mind on the task as she nibbled at her dinner. Her attention was pulled two ways, toward the possible results of that morning's breakfast discussion, and toward what new behavior her roommate might demonstrate. The other girl's actions the night before had been proof enough for the young witch that she, at least, belonged in confinement, and Lia didn't want to be caught off guard again.

Though she knew she would hear it open, it was a struggle not to watch the door as the seconds ticked by. Lia couldn't help but reflect wryly that much more time spent in the place would make her paranoid, and have her jumping at shadows even after she was gone from it.

Elle had to be carefully steered back to her room by a nurse. Her father knew she was here? And he was playing along with these people?

There wasn't much time to dwell on that, however. As the door swung open it became obvious that her roommate was there, looking skittish and confused. Great, this was just what she needed. She'd fully expected to have escaped last night and never have to see the girl again, but here she was, standing in the doorway with her arm in a sling, an obvious failure.

She wanted to say something witty and biting. But all she could manage was to stand there, like a deer in the headlights, wishing she hadn't flipped out last night. She should've kept up her charade of civility, normality, but it had become so draining to pretend to care.

Daddy was disappointed in her. He was disappointed that she'd ended up here, and disappointed that she hadn't earned the right to leave yet. But she'd show him. She be good.

"Hi," she said quietly, as the nurse shut the door behind her, leaving Elle alone with someone she was suddenly irrationally afraid of.

Willow had written earlier on the bulletin board that she was pretty sure she could make it to M3 at the beginning of the night for the meeting, at least briefly. She wasn't so sure if she could anymore, not because anything else had come up, but because she just didn't know if she wanted the same things now as she did that morning. Before, she wanted to focus on everything that post described, on finding out as much as she could and figuring out a way to escape. But now... Tara's parting words were still fresh in her mind, and try as she did to shake them away, they were always there, playing slowly across the backs of her eyelids.

Would it be so bad to play along and escape their way? Maybe it was the right way. Maybe this was her life all along, the life she was meant to have.

The fact that she was even having those thoughts scared Willow, as they were the exact same thoughts that led to Buffy almost killing everyone, and she kept trying to shove them out of her mind, shove Tara's visit out of her mind. She would go to M3 tonight. She would find a way out of here, back to Giles in England where she belonged. She had to.

Willow sat cross-legged on the bed when the nurse left, not particularly hungry enough to touch the food that had been left for her. What was she supposed to believe? The life that made sense, or the life she knew to be real?

Miles was in a slightly better mood when his nurse came to fetch him, but only just. There wasn't much anyone could do to make him less depressed about the situation he was in. The intercom announcement had only served to make him even more upset about things. It was true that he hadn't been taken away for a visitor, but it was also true that people he knew had been. It wouldn't end well.

He was silent on the walk back to his room, even as his nurse rattled on and on and on. He didn't feel the need to humor her with nodding and saying 'uh-huh' in places.

"Don't worry, Mr. Pierce," the nurse said as they got to the door. "We've arranged to have your food cut ahead of time, so you just eat and get some rest. Have a good evening!"

They would have to treat me like a child, wouldn't they?

It was entirely without preamble that Mikami strolled into the room, ignored his roommate, and began to tear through his closet for a new set of clothing. From the door to his current pair of pants trailed a rather obvious track of purple glitter, and judging from the downcast eyes and semi-amused expression of the nurse straggling in after him, it continued into the hall as well.

He turned and draped on the chair the new shirt and pants he had chosen (although of course they were all the same), staring at the woman until she finished setting the dinner tray on the desk, wished him a restful night, and closed the door behind her.

Only then did he completely notice the other man and pause, hands gripping the hem of his shirt. Although he hadn't heard what the conversation was about, he'd seen for the most part what had happened in the cafeteria between Edgeworth and Kristoph. The injury, however, was a new observation to him.

The inevitable question came with a tone deliberate enough to encompass both incidents- "What happened?"

Even though Guy wasn't someone who scared easily, he had to admit to himself that he didn't feel very secure going back to his room. He wanted to believe that Okita wouldn't hurt him no matter what happened, but there was no way he could take that sort of thing for granted, especially when he'd gotten multiple warnings on the subject. Okita seemed to be aware enough of what he was capable of that he had told a few people to keep their distance, but Guy didn't have a choice in the matter.

Even if he had, it would have seemed wrong to avoid his roommate like that. Okita obviously needed support right now, and while Guy knew he wasn't the best person to provide it, he could at least make the effort.

Having his arm in a sling actually made it a lot easier to hide the package that Heiji had given him on the way back to the room, and Guy let out a sigh of relief when the nurse left him to his dinner without searching him. He set the small present down on his desk and then looked over his plate of food.

Steak wasn't something that could really be eaten with one hand, so Guy slowly sat himself down and started in on the fries, trying not to feel nervous as he waited for his roommate to show up.

He had struggled with the nurses for appearances sake, but once they were down the hall, he'd stopped. There was no point to fighting when all he needed was the sedative and hands stronger than his to carry him out of that room and away from Hijikata. He was calm by the time they reached the lower dorm halls and silent when they led him to his room. The nurses must have assumed the sedatives were working because they let him go at that point and ushered him into his room with a rather sharp chiding. "One more incident and we're putting you in solitary, Mr. Ikeda."

The door shut and Okita sank back against it. Guy was in the room already, and Okita knew he should put on a happy face for his roommate, but he just didn't have the energy anymore. His head swam and he put a hand to his forehead, moving unsteadily toward his desk. He missed the chair the first time and hit his elbow on the top of the desk, then finally made it into the seat.

Hijikata was gone. He'd left. He had been broken and changed and-- Okita pushed his thoughts away through the fog and looked up at Guy. Nerves, something was wrong - his arm was in a sling. He ate, but he couldn't cut his steak and Okita didn't exactly trust himself to do it for the man. Forgoing his usual greeting, Okita tried to get his tongue to work around the words in his head and asked, "When did you hurt your arm?"

An almost imperceptible nod from Javert - but it seemed to be good enough for his nurse, who could be heard humming as she shut the door after him and headed down the hall.

There was no sign of Fuchs. For the first time since his visit this afternoon, he was completely and totally alone.

He seated himself quietly and began to eat his dinner.

"There you are, Sean," his nurse said, fluffing his pillows behind him and setting his tray down on his lap. How Artemis was supposed to eat steak while it was set on his lap he wasn't sure.

Still, it felt good to be relaxing again. And he had the feeling that he would need all the rest he could get. After all, if Hinamori was to be believed, Artemis would have to lead the team. It was especially wonderful timing, Artemis thought with a frown--right when he was suffering a major injury.

But that wouldn't dissuade him, and it wouldn't dissuade his mood either. After his success with Schuldig he was in high spirits. Of course, it could have something to do with the time of day as well...

Haku smiled and wished his nurse a good night when he was dropped off in his room after being escorted to the bathroom. He hadn't left his room at all during the day (with the exception of the meal) and smiled at his friend.

"Sean! I hope you're doing better," he said cheerfully, sitting at his desk and smiling as his nurse left him alone with a smile.

Within moments, he was at Artemis' bedside, looking down at him with a small smile. "How are you feeling? Honestly."

Rinali was surprised when she found out she had been moved. Normally this wouldn't present a major problem, but tonight she had plans to meet with Allen in front of her room. Yet protest as much with the nurse as she had, the choice had been made.

And she couldn't post something on the board for Allen. She'd just have to be quick tonight and get back over to her old room so Allen didn't get worried. After last night, and not being able to find him tonight, she was more than a little concerned.

Steak was a welcome change, though, so she took a seat on her side--so very similar to her old room--and began to enjoy her meal. She'd need her strength for tonight, after all.

As Tyki entered his room and sat down to eat his dinner with a sigh, he could only conclude one thing.

Today, in many ways, had sucked.

Even the little 'gifts' he got from his 'friends' couldn't fix it. Maybe it was simply the people he received them from, considering the whole visitor shift this afternoon had left him shaken. But whether he thought long about it or not, what had happened after his 'friends' had left should simply not happen again.

Other than that, there was no point in dwelling on it. Though Tyki had his moments when it came to contemplating about things, it was against his laid-back nature to worry too much. Especially when it threatened to ruin his fun.

Kaoru had struggled to keep his face straight since leaving Arts and Crafts. He barely survived the quick mutter of 'See you halfway' to his brother.

Once his nurse had given him her lecture on eating and how they'd sit and watch him if he didn't get better, Kaoru waited for her to leave before collapsing onto his bed in a fit of laughter.

Kyoukami and the Glitter incident. It had been insane. He was so overcome with shock and Hikaru hadn't helped. What was he supposed to do?! But the days were getting better here. His physical health was getting worse but.... he had things to look forward to again. They both did.

Kaoru rolled onto his side, still smiling, and looked at Wolfy's empty bed. Ah. The conversation. This was going to be interesting. Although he hoped he hadn't offended Wolfy. He genuinely liked the kid. Err. Old man? Ok, that whole side of the deal was disturbing, but he was getting a little more open minded about the world. Especially after the great balls of fire display last night.

Honestly, Wolfram had missed most of the day. He'd gone to brunch briefly and ate a little, but he'd left again even before half of the other patients had finished eating. Disappearing into the sun room, he'd curled up on a couch and fallen asleep rather easily, and spent almost the entire day that way. He'd woken up long enough to leave some notes on the bulletin board, and then..

Oh yes. Wolfram gave his roommate a rather curious look as soon as he got back to the room.

"You sure seem happy today." He was interrupted with a rather huge yawn before he could say anymore, still waking himself up a bit.

Teisel wasn't sure when the girl had wandered off, or how long he'd sat there staring at the water. In something of a daze, he let the nurse lead him back to his cell.

He didn't feel much like eating, which was a shame since he didn't get to eat meat too often. The smell alone was making him feel ill, though, so he shoved the plate away. Noticing a notepad on the corner of the desk, he tore out a piece of paper, hoping to give himself something distracting to do. It didn't work so well; his thoughts kept drifting back to the matter of his eyes, and the paper crane he'd been trying for ended up resembling a wad of paper. Turned a certain way, it almost looked sort of like a duck.

Teisel had added three more ducks when it occurred to him to look for a pencil. Maybe getting something down on paper would make things easier to figure out. Mothers knew he wasn't having much luck so far. Finding a bundle of pens in the desk drawer, he scribbled down a few quick notes, intending to go over them when he wasn't so...discombobulated.

Now he was feeling a bit better, like he'd maybe accomplished something. The food was cold by now, but he made himself nibble at it anyway. Just because he was confused and depressed didn't mean he didn't need to eat something.

The nurse had been hovering ever since she'd dragged him away from Yohji when the intercom changed. Or maybe it was more like circling, fucking vulture. She hovered until 'poor Andrew' had eaten at least a few bites of food. Seemingly mollified after that she'd left to do...whatever it was the nurses did before they turned into bad American horror movie cosplayers.

As soon as the door latched shut behind her, Ken dropped his fork and glared at the plate as if this was all the dead cow's fault.

By the time he was led away from his "visitors" Yukito was more or less moving on auto-pilot. Or perhaps Yue was; it was hard to tell for certain at that point where either one of them was, as neither one really wanted to be there. He (or they) followed along behind the nurse, completely deaf to her chattering, just focusing on putting one foot in front of the other until she stopped and he did, too.

She finally departed again after what seemed an eternity, leaving behind his dinner tray as well as the little bag of cookies and get-well card the girl who was and wasn't Sakura had brought, but he paid no attention to either one. He just started moving again and headed straight toward the bed, where he sat down with his back to the wall, pulled his legs against his chest, and buried his face against his knees. There was not a word spoken to his roommate, or even an acknowledgement that someone else was even present.

Sasuke arrived fairly late from the Courtyard, but Allen was even later, to his surprise. It had been some time since he'd managed to talk to the kid -- the past few nights, Sasuke had been sleeping -- and he'd hoped to get a status update and find out if Allen had learned anything.

Actually, now that he thought about it, he should probably also find out why Aidou had such poor impression of Allen. Aidou was picky when it came to his alliances, but Sasuke was relatively sure that the vampire was intelligent enough to not be completely capricious in a place like this.

Last shift had been troubling, to say the least. His game with the hobo-guy had been cut short and at the worst possible time too. Was he really Tyki? The guy with bottle lens glasses and stubble and greasy hair was really the same Tyki?

When he was taken back to the room though, he could smell the dinner and his stomach growled in anticipation. Sasuke was already up, which was a change. His dinners had been kind of quiet the last few nights. He smiled slightly, whether or not his roommate was able to notice, and gave a short greeting before he sat on the edge of his bed, the tray in his lap.

Oddly enough, talking with Sasuke had actually helped bring Sai out of some of the funk he'd found himself in after Shin and Danzo had left. Perhaps he should have thanked him for it, but he knew he was still treading on thin ice with the Uchiha.

Upon returning to his room, the ninja took out the ink and brush that Shin, or Sean rather, had given him - tucking it safely out of the way. He would find a time for it eventually.

Dinner was more than he felt like eating, so he spent a good while simply cutting the meat up into smaller pieces and thinking over the events of the day.

It had been something of a sudden decision, asking about alchemy over the bulletin, but Leon was still very interested in comparing notes. He knew his method of alchemy wasn't the same as those that could make weapons the way a handful of patients in the Institute could, but he was a fast learner. If any of that knowledge could be passed on...

He just wanted to be the most help he could be, was all.

The boy smiled when he saw what was for dinner. Steak was going to make Claude one happy camper - well off for nightshift too. Now if only they'd have some carrot juice every now and then this place might be a bit more bearable.

Today had probably been the worst day Keman had had so far at Landel's. He was still reeling from the visit from his mother, and now he had a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach that he couldn't get rid of, no matter how hard he tried. It was like something had gone horribly wrong in the past...ten minutes or so, but he couldn't quite figure out what. Still, he couldn't take it out on Leon. That wouldn't be fair. The kid probably already thought he was some sort of manic-depressive anyway.

"Hullo," he said, forcing a smile. "How've you been?"

Well, the talk with Nate had been food for thought, to say the least. He hadn't been all that excited about the steak, but Usopp had to think Luffy should be thrilled with the offering. What was Luffy going to be doing tonight, anyway?

At least he knew where some of his crewmates would be... a small army were due to drop by his room, and maybe Sai would come by as well. He could use all the help he could get, especially if the courtyard wound up occupied again. Usopp started into his meal without too much fuss, for once leaving his notebook alone.

Sousuke's nurse took the liberty of escorting him down the hallway, a comforting hand at his arm. "I'm certain you can talk to Alice tomorrow. Cheer up, Akihiro, I'm sure Kotone will understand."

He wasn't exactly sure what Kaname was supposed to understand, but he didn't feel like asking. He didn't feel like doing anything. He even didn't salute Usopp as he came into the room. Instead, he planted himself face-first into the bed and didn't move. His nurse gave Usopp a worried look, but left Sousuke's dinner on his desk and exited the room.

Seiya was more than ready for the steak, which looked and smelled wonderful. Steak wasn't her favorite, but she could definitely afford the extra energy for tonight. Thinking about her upcoming meeting with Michiru, she considered her options again. The two locations she'd hoped to reach were still at the top of the list, but maybe heading outdoors downstairs would work as well. It was hard to guess; it might not even work in this place, without her crystal near her. But she had to at least give it a shot. Hopefully, she wouldn't pay for the effort if Michiru took advantage of the subsequent drain of energy.

Xelloss started with his apple pie, pleased at his own progress for the day. He had plans for the night, and the means to fulfill them. That was often an improvement over aimless wandering, although he had to admit aimless wandering had its benefits too. It didn't hurt that the meal was also rather delicious.

Now, if Hellmaster would just show up again, everything would be perfect, or at the very least he'd have a better idea of what needed to be fixed. No one had reported a young roommate missing on the boards, that he recalled, but some patients could be a little callous. The thought of someone simply taking Lord Hellmaster Phibrizzo to and from wherever they liked against his will was not as strange as it might have been. There was also the possibility that he'd found a way home, and if he did, the odds of his pausing to considerately inform Xelloss were at best mediocre...

Well, that was the price of Xelloss's station in life. He didn't mind it, really. Being a lord of death had to be tiresome after a while. And the steak was also delicious.

Vlad was still unhappy about being pulled from his game before a complete victory could be won. He didn't act out, of course, turning his best smile to his nurse as she guided him to his room and thanking her for the dinner before she left. But it was growing old, quickly, to be shuffled about from room to room on someone else's schedule. At least the nighttime had that much freedom, assuming idiots didn't choose to do idiotic things that required his intervention whether he'd made plans or not.

On the other hand, winning might not have been a perfect idea. The way the other man had reacted to Vlad's first victory had been stunning, but perhaps showing a winning streak would only cause resentment. The idea that he might have actually lost the next hand for any reason other than his own pans to do so didn't pass his mind long. He'd had the strongest hand in the deck, and had already won with the weakest; unlike whatever idly sadistic idiot Kaiji had played with before, Vlad knew what to do with strength.

He also knew what to do with steak, unlike the staff here, but started cutting into his meal anyhow. It wouldn't be practical to have the quality of meat Vlad was accustomed to in an institution, even if this place was a clear fraud on that front. But a rare, high-quality fillet would have been a lovely change of pace.

Qui-Gon didn't have any specific plan in mind for tonight. Sooner or later, he knew he would have to return to the basement with Obi-Wan to explore what lay beyond the North Door...but that was for another day; now was the time to eat and his roommate Vlad was already here.

"Evening," Qui-Gon said amiably as he stepped inside. The man looked to be in pretty good health, cutting into some kind of unidentified meat on his plate with the clean, precise movements of someone who had been well-off indeed before Landels.
