Day 36: Intercom, Evening

The intercom's jingle rang out and the somewhat uninhibited movement that was going on between the main activity rooms halted as the Head Doctor made one of his usual announcements.

"Good evening everyone, and I'm very pleased to see so many of you in such high spirits after meeting with your loved ones! However, like with all good things, it can't last forever, so I ask now for nurses to escort our patients in the waiting rooms and in the main areas back to their rooms, where they will be treated with a special Sunday... steak! That's right: today, we'll be serving juicy, delicious steak with fries and cooked vegetables on the side – simple enough for everyone to like and good enough for everyone to thoroughly enjoy! (Our patients with specialized diets will receive their alternate meals, of course.) Our usual beverages are available, and for dessert, we'll be serving warm slices of apple pie.

"After all, patients, t's always wonderful to see all of you cooperating with the staff even when given so much freedom, so I'd like to personally thank and congratulate all of you for helping us, your family, and more importantly, yourselves. Hopefully, we can help you to a speedy recovery so that you can see your loved ones more often, but first... dinner! I hope to speak with you all again soon."

The intercom clicked off.

On an added note, just wanted to clarify to players of characters who are canonly vegetarians and the like that you get to decide (within reasonable and realistic limits) what kind of diet your character gets from the staff. :3 ]

Haku smiled and laughed softly. "That must be it," he said before leaning forward and pressing a light kiss to Artemis's lips.

Freud's mother, he felt so suave when Haku wasn't looking at him like this. Now he couldn't think of anything romantic or witty or enticing to say. He blamed his hormones. Damn them. Damn them to hormonal hell.

Artemis leaned forward into the kiss. At the risk of sounding petty, he'd been waiting for this for some time now. Ever since that damned dream he'd had.

Haku pulled away for a moment to smile at the expression on his friends face before leaning in.

There was something about rendering the other boy speechless...

Artemis nearly whined again at Haku's retreat. He swore, Haku would be the death of him. He was going to die of embarrassment. The great Artemis Fowl, rendered dumb and speechless by another boy. A very smart, wonderful, different, honest boy, but another human being nonetheless.

He only came up for air, and watched Haku with the same desire-clouded eyes for a moment. "How much time do you think we have?"

Resting his forehead on Artemis's, enjoying the heat he felt there, he sighed. "Not long enough," he said softly.

He nodded, careful not to move Haku too much. He himself was enjoying the cool feeling of Haku's skin. "We should make the most of what time we have, then?"

Haku smiled and laughed softly. "We should. Did you have something in mind?"

"I thought the direction we were heading in previously was... nice..." Artemis said. How did one go about doing this sort of thing? Just saying it was probably a social faux pas. Haku would know more about this sort of thing.

"True," Haku said, "But I don't want to hurt you, or making your wounds worse."

"Leaving me like this would be the unkindest cut of all," Artemis said, looking down at Haku's hands, and looking for all the world as though he was pouting. Perhaps Haku wasn't the only one slowly getting addicted to physicality.

Haku shifted and tugged Artemis close to him. "So dramatic," he teased gently,placing a kiss on Artemis's cheek. "We really need to work on that."

"I'm trying," Artemis said defensively. "But I really have no idea what I'm doing." It annoyed him to think that he couldn't understand how to do something that seemed so simple.

"And you think I do?" He chuckled. "It's not as though I've had experiance in something like this."

Artemis' expression grew more petulant. "'Like this'?" he questioned dubiously.

"Wanting to be touched and cared about by someone that isn't paying me," Haku explained softly. "Wanting to touch in return and be close and not because you're feeding me or offering me space for an hour or two."

Well, that hadn't been the sort of answer he had expected. Artemis' expression fell very rapidly into horrified embarrassment. The boy looked away, opening his mouth several times as though trying to figure out what to say.

Haku lowered his gaze, thinking he'd just blown it all and quickly snatched his hands back. "Sorry," he said, definitly meaning it this time. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that."

"No," Artemis said firmly, taking Haku's hands back. "No, it's important. I'm not made of glass, remember? I know... It's okay, I know..."

Haku couldn't bring himself to look up at Artemis. Not yet. "I forget, sometimes, that people don't assume that about me here," he admitted, looking at their joined hands. "Silly things like that slip out. I'm sorry."

"No, Haku, look at me," Artemis tried to tilt Haku's chin up a little more forcefully than was normal for him.

Haku blinked, and allowed his head to be brought up. He stopped himself from pulling away, but just barely, and he wasn't able to totally hide the haunted look on his face.

Artemis balked at the look Haku was giving him, but he continued as firmly as was possible. "No one, no one, should assume that. Do you understand? No one. You don't have to put up with that, not anymore."

The boy suddenly embraced Haku tightly, pulling the tube out of his nose. He didn't care. "You will never, ever have to do anything you don't want to ever again. You will never be touched by another person who hasn't been allowed again. I will never let that happen to you again."

After all, why did he have all this money if not to throw it into whatever he wanted?

Haku tensed up and wasn't sure what to do or say in this situation. There didn't seem to be anything to say.

Instead, he started to tremble slightly and made a soft, startled sound when he felt water run down his cheek.

He was ... crying? He couldn't belive it. He'd cried more times in this place than he had in his life.

Artemis was just as surprised. Ironic, though, this situation. A week ago, it had been him crying in Haku's arms. Now it was the reverse.

"Come on," Artemis said, his tone soft and soothing. "Lie down with me, it's alright, I understand." The boy gently stroked Haku's back, trying to comfort him.

Haku gently pushed away enough to wipe at his eyes, but he couldn't seem to stop. He just looked at the tears on his finger with confusion.

"I'm... crying." He sounded perplexed.
