Nightshift 35: West Wing, South Hall 1-A

[Coming from here]

So they still had to deal with one of the brainwashed patients tonight; the rest were being carted off for experimentation. Something had changed in the routine. There'd been a pattern earlier, one night to those "trials", the others for the brain-washed patients. But tonight was different for some reason.

So what made it change?

Sanzo was suspicious of sudden change, mostly because it always signaled something was up.

Was it because of that "Jill" pissing Landel off? Or just pure whim?

Whatever the reason, it wouldn't do the patients any favors.

Stepping into the main hallway, Ritsuka finally turned on his flashlight, aiming it at the ground. He didn't like being out in the open without being able to see around him. In the main hallways, monsters were more likely to attack and the last thing he needed was more injuries.

Though accustomed to working in the dark, Sheena was grateful for the light. She liked the light better than the dark now that she was cut off form her pacts. Before, she liked them both equally when she could here Luna and Shadow, but now...

"Yup. These aren't very good, but we usually use better materials. The best cards are carved from wood," she explained, eyes looking for monsters. "They don't really have a specific spell on them but more of a focus to channel my mana into to achieve a desired effect."

Almost there now, Elena was relatively certain. The door to one of the mens' areas was just up ahead, and she didn't have to walk to far down the hallway before stumbling across it. She shook her head, part of her considering that next time he could be the gentleman and find her.

...Yeah, as if that would happen. It was a nice thought anyways.

And if he wasn't there, she supposed that she could stay and rest in his room for the night. She hadn't rested since first waking up here yesterday, and it was starting to get to her just a little. But she was still more than ready to be going out if it was useful.

Kaiji was thoroughly offended by Badou's line of questioning. Did he care about life? He had begged for it before, dammit! "And what the fuck kind of question is that, anyway?"

From the outside, it likely did seem that he didn't care about life. That is, for those who had never caught him quivering in fear, for those who never heard him calling out to other people, divine entities, anyone or anything to save him, for those who had never seen him collapsed on a table sobbing for mercy. Death terrified Kaiji so much that he would definitely take his crappy life over it any day.

He paused for a moment to try and think of something else to say. He ended up reiterating, hoping to get his point across as bluntly as possible: "I care about life! I want to live! Even if I have to spend the rest of my life in this fucking awful place or worse!"

What else was he supposed to do? Turn down the suicidal offer! Go back to sleep! Scratch his ass and shut the door! There were plenty of smart options! Why was this such a difficult con--

Why the hell was Badou arguing against having a meat shield partner!? Things were actually going his way. Which meant, sooner or later, his luck was going to turn into a steaming pile of shit. He might as well take it while it lasted.

Badou held up both hands, "Ok ok, relax! I don't really care why you're coming along."

Flashlight out in front of him, Tanaka made his way down the hallway, moving as quickly as possible without making a racket. As he continued, he began to notice just how long the hallway was. No doors on either side, no marks on the walls... no way to tell he was making any progress at all, if not for the linoleum squares passing under his feet. It had already been a while in this hallway... had he missed the turnoff to the Captain's cellblock somehow?

[identity profile] violent-varmint.livejournal.com 2008-09-26 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Tanaka was just beginning to worry that he might have somehow gotten lost when a door came into view on his right side. Carefully opening the door a crack and peering through, he was relieved to find another patient block beyond. He quickly kicked the door open the rest of the way, and proceeded inside.

So, same as usual so far. The cat-things that those guys had been fighting were sort of interesting, but not interesting enough to linger back there without a weapon. Still, they looked an awful lot like illegal zombies to Shito. Maybe some day he'd get a better look at them. Was Landel an illegal zombie himself, to be making those things? Turning down the hallway before the one he actually needed, Matt paused to lean against the wall. He could still smell the mess from the central hallway. It was probably all over his shoes by now. Whatever bit of adrenaline he'd used to make it through the sun room was wearing out.

All this combined caused him to lean over abruptly and throw up his dinner. Nothing like once-spicy food revisited.

When he'd finished, he wiped the back of his mouth off with one hand and removed his bloodstained shoes. He left both them and the mess behind and stumbled to the first doorway in sight. Wasn't the clinic in this hall? He didn't know what they could offer him, but it was a destination.

Well, one thing was different in this hallway, that was for sure--it smelled like someone just threw up. Gross! Tokito started watching his feet carefully, not wanting to step in it. He almost did anyway, since the flashlight only illuminated the floor a few steps ahead of him. Great. A nice pile of puke. And... shoes? What the hell? "Watch it. Someone barfed."

[identity profile] wildunderstress.livejournal.com 2008-09-27 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Jamie wrinkled his nose as the odor hit him and followed Tokito's lead, watching his step until he'd located the source of the smell. The shoes lying randomly nearby had a sheen to them, the soles covered in something that glistened in the beam of his flashlight. Jamie hustled down the hall and past the offending footwear, suspecting he didn't particularly want to find out what it was that was covering them.

Coming out into the hallway only alerted him to the smell of blood and other... less pleasant odors. Familiar to him, in more ways than one.

The doll stopped, swinging his flashlight in both directions, half-heartedly checking to see if he'd find the source. Not likely in this dark. And was it from a monster or was it human? Either way, warm blood had its own certain cloy. Their targets would hardly notice it when they were being faced with their crimes after a completed contract, but there was a difference between illusionary tortures and reality.

He frowned where no one could see him, giving in to an age-old disgust.

Never a dull day around here.

After scanning as much of the corridor as he could, slowly making his way to the north door, the servant finally turned completely and left. There was a good chance the outdoors would be even more dangerous.

It was late. He needed to check on Usopp.

As Sai turned the corner, however, he picked up a disturbing odor from the other direction. He paused, unsure whether or not checking it out would be the best of ideas. Enough time had passed already after he should have been meeting with the pirate. He shouldn't be taking any detours.

Curiosity won out, however. He and Usopp hadn't exactly made any plans, so there was still room for checking on him later...

As they exited out into the hall, Roy sighed to himself. He hadn't meant to worry his friend, but he realized that comment must have seemed to come out of nowhere.

He glanced to Hughes as his friend walked out after him, nodding in agreement despite the fact that he still looked somewhat unsure. "I know that, but I realize that a lot of the time these trips out don't result in much of anything. There's a chance you could be doing something more productive..." He paused, not quite sure where he was going with this.

"I suppose I'm just used to having all the answers, and being able to carry more weight. In this place, I don't really know more than anyone else." In fact, he might know a good deal less than some other people who had been more successful in their attempts to get to this place or that place or wherever.

He knew it wasn't like him to be so insecure, and so he soon straightened and squared his shoulders. "But we should keep going." The only thing that could produce results was action, so standing around and brooding about it would do them no good.

[identity profile] felled-hero.livejournal.com 2008-09-27 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Hughes could see where Roy was coming from, he just looked at it differently.

"Well, it's not like anyone really gets anything accomplished," he pointed out. "Nobody's got the answers. We're all just sort of mucking around in the dark together. And I trust you to watch my back more than I trust anyone else around here. So don't worry about that. We're doing what we can, that's all we can do."

He clapped Roy affectionately on the shoulder, not voicing any concern. But he was a little concerned, worried that maybe things were starting to get to his friend.

"Lead on," he urged, instead.

It was beginning to be a familiar pattern now: open the door, quickly scan the hallway for potential threats, and get the rest of the group behind him. Holding the door open long enough for ZEX and Zelnick to follow, Tanaka then continued down the hallway to the right (it had been right, hadn't it?), alert and with flashlight in hand.

[identity profile] violent-varmint.livejournal.com 2008-09-29 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
Thankfully, the hall wasn't as long on its south end as it was on its north one. Noticing a door on his right as the group neared the end of the hallway, Tanaka moved to check if it was open, until his flashlight landed on the sign next to the door declaring it to be a "Nurse's Station", and thus probably not the way to the second floor. The Shofixti gave a "hmpf", and then was back on track, reaching the end of the hall and again checking for monsters or antagonists before moving in.

Naruto grew more and more excited as they made their way through the next hall, memorizing the distances and turns they were taking, replaying them in his head.

In a couple of minutes he'd face Sasuke, but this time, he wouldn't let himself be affect by his "threats". He shot Jiraiya a grin, grateful for what he'd told him.

[identity profile] toadally4boobs.livejournal.com 2008-09-29 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Jiraiya couldn't help but chuckle as Naruto continuously grew more excited, step by step. When Naruto smiled at him, Jiraiya smiled back. Naruto's emotions always filled a room--or a hall, in this case--and resonated in the heart of others.

That was why Jiraiya realized Naruto had to be the destined child. It was an ability beyond anything that chakra could ever accomplish. The power to change, to affect others in a way that no one else ever could.

If Pain thought he was a god, he'd have another thing coming once he faced Naruto.

They headed through the next door without incident.

There was definitely fighting going on in this hallway. Matt had been too out of it to pay much attention before, but now that he was paying closer attention he realized he recognized at least one of the patients fighting. (What was with the fighting amongst each other tonight? Couldn't they all just get along?)

You'd better not go and get yourself killed, Himura. He continued to move, hoping there'd still be something of the red-head left the next day to bother about training.

Mello only glimpsed the shapes of human fighters before continuing quickly down the hallway. Violence between patients was either none of his concern or a sign of one of those brainwashing victims he'd witnessed with Sai, and if it was the latter, they needed to move the hell on.

Hitsugaya moved quickly out through the hallways, leaving his light off for now. He knew these halls all too well by now, had navigated them once a night for over two weeks now. He didn't need a light to guide him beyond the light of the few people who still roamed these early hallways, and his other senses would provide better warning of any approaching danger than sight ever could.

In spite of his own turmoils, he did his best to stay on high alert. Don't think about Momo. Don't think about the kiss. Don't think about the way she ran from you. Just keep moving.

Once they were further out in the open, he spoke. "We tried north last night," he said. "Doyletown is to the south. We might be able to find something of value there..."

Senna had followed silently for a while, caught up in her own thoughts. Her silence was out of character for her, but she was unnerved by what the captain said. How would she know if Schuldig already knew? Did she have to actually think about it for him to know? All she had been doing was thinking about it! Damn....

A few memories flickered through the back of her mind, all abstract and fleeting. Senna was glad for the darkness to hide--she was sure that every emotion she had was showing on her face... she was never very good at controlling her emotions.

She breathed, trying to act normal. "Okay," she responded quietly. "What are we looking for?" Watching Hitsugaya's form in front of her, she added, "How'd you get your uniform here?"

Few hours best spent scraping for information instead of needlessly dawdling.
