Nightshift 35: West Wing, South Hall 1-A

[Coming from here]

So they still had to deal with one of the brainwashed patients tonight; the rest were being carted off for experimentation. Something had changed in the routine. There'd been a pattern earlier, one night to those "trials", the others for the brain-washed patients. But tonight was different for some reason.

So what made it change?

Sanzo was suspicious of sudden change, mostly because it always signaled something was up.

Was it because of that "Jill" pissing Landel off? Or just pure whim?

Whatever the reason, it wouldn't do the patients any favors.

Moving into the larger hallway, Valyn paused to make sure the coast was clear. The dim mage light hovering over his shoulder cast enough light to easily see by - he had a cat's excellent night vision - and so far it looked as though the hall was nearly empty....

The light caught Jamie's eye - it appeared to be more or less hovering mid-air, coming from no visible source as it highlighted the contours of a human shape just below and in front of it. Jamie was intrigued, but curiosity would have to take a backseat in their current situation; he and Tokito needed to find someone to help them find a way out of here, and everyone else in the hallway seemed intent on one activity or another. Cautiously, Jamie approached the man.

"...hello?" he called, a little tentatively.

So far, it looked like the hallway was more empty than it normally was. Maybe he was just making really awesome time tonight? Claude sure hoped so. It wouldn't do for the night to suddenly end, right when he was in the middle of something important. Even if they were still technically trapped here, now was one of the few times everyone got wander freely. It was best to make good use of the time allotted to them, wasn't it?

The Earthling let his flashlight illuminate the path ahead as he kept his pace brisk and steady. He wouldn't be running any races tonight, but he knew when not to mess around.

Leaving the patient block, Sora spotted another patient who was sharing the hall with him, and his eyes widened when he realized that the man had a small light hanging over his shoulder. What was that? It looked cool! Sora figured it must have been some sort of magic, and while he would have loved to learn more about it, he knew he didn't have the time for that.

He turned off his own flashlight for the moment, squinting through the darkness and using the other patient's small light to move down the hall and past the nurse's station. He spotted the stairs that he so often liked to use as a meeting spot and turned right past them.

There hadn't been any sign of Demyx, so Matsuda had turned to go down the way they had been walking the night before. The next hall wasn't all that different from the one before it, just sort of a long stretch that looked kinda creepy at night. Oh well, he had to get through it to go take a better look around. Still, Matsuda glanced around nervously as he continued on down the hall, making sure to keep up his pace.

He turned the corner and headed back up the second hallway, toward the other patient rooms. At least the layout here was a simple one and easy not to get lost. Once he dropped off the metal, what then? He tried not to fret over what might be happening to the girls or his other friends, but they'd been alright before on their own, they should be alright tonight. Much as he wanted to start a group with them, he had his own things to resolve first. And that meant two more nights working for Homura. Two more nights that ought to be spent searching for Sakura, would be wasted.

Turning into one of the main veins of the institute, Hohenheim passed to look up and down it. There were so many places to go, but he finally decided that the second floor would suit his purposes tonight. His only concern was running into anything that could possibly attempt physical violence against him, since his alchemy was so reduced.

He would never know unless he got there, and there was no time like the present. He ambled down the hallway towards where he thought there may be stairs or at least someone to direct him towards where a set may be.

Wally noticed with relief that there were a few more people moving about in this corridor. Not that he'd really been that worried, but it was just... reassuring. That was all. He glanced back at Tony. "I think there's some stairs around here somewhere."

"Don't worry," Tony deadpanned. "If we stumble across the Necronomicon, I won't read it out loud." He nodded his agreement, peering down the hall. "Main hallway, I'll bet," he replied. "Unless the they've all learned to fly..." It didn't sound quite as implausible as it should have, and he grimaced a little at the thought as he headed down into the next hall.

While Rangiku might have invited him to go along for the night, that was a far cry from the others wishing him to be there. They hadn't made any solid plans before the buses had dropped them off and taken them back to their rooms, so it was anyone's guess if she'd actually sit and wait for him or just run off with the others. Gin hadn't gone more than a few paces outside his door before he tried to find her spirit thread.

Normally such a thing was as easy as breathing, but he could feel a haze of pain start to tighten around his head as he tried to narrow down her location. On one hand she wasn't far, but on the other, she wasn't still in her room. Well, it did make the chase more interesting.

He sniffed, wiping the beginnings of a bloody nose on the back of his wrist as he set off at a steady pace, walking cautiously toward the other end of the hall.

There were a few other people in the halls, but they all seemed intent on their own destinations. The sight of other peoples' lights moving past as their holders hurried along just made Hanatarou want to walk a little slower. Well, that and the darkness that seemed to press tighter about him with every step.

Maybe it hadn't been such a good idea to go out by himself. But no, he firmly told himself that this was nothing worse than being in the sewers under Seireitei. It was just darkness, he would be fine.

That thought didn't stop him, however, from hurrying a little when he saw the larger, more populated hallway up ahead. It was sure to be safer, right?

Thoughts of what to do after dropping her package off marinated in Beatrix's mind. Since Donna hadn't stopped by, she assumed the woman had found company for the night, probably with the Doctor, so there was no need to worry about her. Her wards... well, she did have those uniforms and she hadn't seen Rena in a while. Plus, Mion hadn't shown up the previous night for knife lessons, so...

The Bride would see if Mion was in her room and then check on Rena. After that, they'd figure something else out.

This was just eerie. Now that they moved into the lower hall, Okita had expected to see more people around. All he saw was a dim shadow further down the way and nothing more. Someone was here, but it was only one person. Usually there were groups forming here, people moving about to meet up with their friends, or simply people loitering and at a loss for what to do at night.

Where was everyone?

"A quiet night, hm?" Okita couldn't stand the silence of the hall. "I wonder where everyone went."

Guy figured that the secrecy was understandable, seeing how the nurses had a tendency to breathe down their necks. That was particularly difficult on him, but at least most of the nurses had learned to keep their distance lest he start to shake. It just figured that he would get stuck in a place where most of the staff was female. At least the patient body was mainly male.

"Well, I actually found about this through another friend who delivered the message, so that might be why I'm a little scarce on the details," he explained. Guy had also noticed how empty the hallway was, of course, and he was doing his best not to think about what the reason for it was. Maybe they were just coming through at a strange time or something.

Either way, he kept moving, glad to see that Okita was managing and yet also hoping that the man wasn't pushing himself to hard. When they reached the end of the hall, Guy took a right.

Kaoru was determined that he'd make it at least halfway to Hikaru so he'd rushed a little. His head was spinning from it, but he didn't care. Sure he could get attacked and killed in his weak state but, hey, what were the chances? And that was rhetorical. Even in his head. He beat down the little voice that wanted to speak the truth. It was no fun and no use right now. He wanted to get to Hikaru and ignore his brother's worries and protests. The longer Kaoru kept the truth from his brother, the sillier he felt. But he also got a little more scared with each moment. He was either crazy or he was right and he didn't like either option. It was just another thing to ignore.

Kaoru ran as far as he could, but it wasn't long before his legs gave in and his knees hit the ground.

But what about the other guy? Everything went so fast and Hikaru was so important that.... Kaoru kind off forgot about him after the initial spark of worry. He was doing what the guy had told them to. And it was a smart enough plan, so surely he'd be able to take care of himself?

"Hikaru," he panted, "You ok?"

Adelheid found himself pondering what he knew as he continued walking on, and as an afterthought, he'd clipped his radio to his waistband as he walked along. He'd decided long ago that when something changed in the Institute, it was never a good thing; the fact that there was change again was not a good sign at all. Even more, Adelheid was worried about how confident the Head Doctor was now, with his last bid of 'good luck' to the patients who were planning on going outside. Which, honestly, a part of the German wanted to do... but on the other hand, he was certain that if there were answers, he'd find them somewhere inside of the Institute. He knew where the basement was, after his business with Hohenheim, he'd try again.

...it was odd being on his own again, after so long getting used to working in groups. Odd, yet rather liberating as well. He was well-equipped, fed, and rested; moreover he wasn't suffering any wounds either, even his eye with its prosthetic was feeling fine. If ever there was a time when he'd be fine on his own, this would be it. Growing more confident with each step, Adelheid continued onward.

Almost there, he was fairly sure. He could put his other concerns and worries aside for now, he had to find out what was wrong with Tamaki and then do what he could to fix it. Tama-chan was their leader, even if they were in dire circumstances now. They needed him to be strong because he was the glue that held everyone together.

Since they hadn't really delayed any in getting out the door, Mori was sure they'd have a little more time to talk this time than they did last time. Then again, time in general moved very strangely here. He wished he had a watch or even a clear view of the moon to help him, but there were very few windows out of which he could look and no watches. The radios only produced static until one of the people made an announcement, too, so that was useless for time.

Nodding absently, Mori turned into the next corridor and kept walking.

Warily, von Karma stood in the doorway and looked around. This was the very place where he had run into the boy last night, and he could ill afford the chance that it would happen again before he was ready. Thankfully, he didn't see anyone he recognized among the handful of people milling about in this hallway.

Unfortunately, it didn't appear as though anyone was currently heading in the direction he was going. Very well. He had gotten this far without incident, so he would maintain his course on his own. Thanks to Javert's map, he already knew where he could retreat should any threats present themselves.

Satisfied that it was safe enough for the moment, von Karma stepped into the hallway and turned left. He carefully proceeded towards the open doorway to the north, staying close to the wall and trying to appear as inconspicuous as possible.

Now it seemed more patients were braving the darkness, headed out to get whatever tasks they'd chosen accomplished. None lingered long, and that only fueled Near's intention to move quickly. Considering fictional archetypes, certainly there would be those who were heroes in their worlds alongside the villains, meaning that some might feel obligated to help a boy in trouble. But Near wouldn't risk his life on something so likely to be untrue. Such a wager called for much better terms.

His flashlight shone carefully about, he continued on.

"I hope he reads the note, if he does come by." Usopp worried a bit out loud. He already felt a little guilty that he'd warned Chopper about the monster nurses and then they hadn't even happened, but Chopper understood the Institute did things differently sometimes... right? Anyway, everyone would be happier in a world without nurses turning into monsters, so it was really a good thing. He just wasn't used to having his words be lies without actual intent.
