Nightshift 34: Main Hallway, 1-West

[from here]

The shinigami padded silently down the hallway, keeping to the left-side wall and her hand upon her sword's hilt. Her eyes scanned the area surorunding her as she continued on to the next hallway, especially the nurses' stations as she neared them. This would be a horrible time for her to get attacked by a nurse or two. Thankfully, the halls were empty, btu she didn't drop her guard. She knew better.

Almost there.

The Star Dragon Sword paused in his journey to take in the newest hallway. Amber eyes carefully glanced down either side to search for any threats, but when none presented itself, the Night Rune continued his journey.

This was part of the main hall, wasn't it? Anise wondered if it was wide enough to test her puppet here. Unfortunately, it looked like being one of the first out of the rooms had its drawbacks: since there weren't any people waving their flashlights around in the area, Anise could hardly see anything no matter how hard she squinted!

Whether the location was good or not, she would just have to wait until after she met up with Ion. There was no point in trying things out if she couldn't even hope to see the results!

Somewhat disappointed, the girl continued down the hall, feeling along the left wall to make sure she didn't miss her turn.

Once SubZero reached the main hallway he was faced with a choice. Should he try to go upstairs, or head for the basement again. There would probably be very tough opponents in his path if he tried to go to the basement, though that's where the man on the radio had said Dr. Landel was.

On the other hand, he could go exploring upstairs, there might be something worth checking out up there. With his full powers he would've gone towards the basement, but with the restrictions he currently had using his powers to make an ice blast would leave him too vulnerable immediately after to risk going up against a tough enemy alone.

Ah ha! She was right! The hallway came to a T right at the end. Now, if she remembered right, she would have to make a left to get to the Sunny Room. If she made a right that was where the stairs were... right?

... Maybe she should have asked Meesy if she could take the maps with her. Too late now. Harley would just have to trust in her ability to--

"EEEEEEEEEEEE!!" She jumped nearly three feet and squealed before she even realized what she was doing. Her flashlight had suddenly hit the body of some... guy who was just standing there for some stupid reason. She put a hand to her chest relieved it was just some other patient. The relief was short lived though.

"Hey! What's the big idea?!" Harley demanded, suddenly outraged like this was his fault. "Ya nearly gave me a heart attack!"

Yes, this was a hallway she remembered more clearly. It was around this one that she had started paying more attention to her surroundings than to what the nurse had been saying. It had looked like one of the larger halls and, if she recalled correctly, she could reach both the cafeteria and the Sun Room from here.

Now all that remained was to decide which way to go. She mentally dismissed the cafeteria and Sun Room, thinking instead on what would be in another direction. Looking for an exit was her first priority, but it was unlikely that she would find it in the building's entrance. All of the other doors she had come across had been unlocked, but would she really be lucky enough to find the entrance unlocked? Someone would have surely escaped through it already if it were. ...Right?

Or... Maybe there was an exit somewhere else. Yes, that seemed like a possibility. She would just have to decide which way to go first.

Scar managed to reach the main hallway without any difficulties, and scanned the area for threats and patients alike. It wasn't overly crowded in here just yet, and two of them were interacting with one another. There was one person - a female - standing by herself. The woman had a rather odd mane-color (or hair, as humans called it). Green certainly wasn't a very common color for hair to have. But he was referring to a human, not a zebra.

But he supposed he was in no position to be picky about hair/mane colors. A person was a person, and considering the relative empty hallways he had just passed this was an opportunity he should grab. It was better than nothing, and he reminded himself that good help was rare. At least she wasn't screaming like an idiot and thus making herself monster-bait like the brainless individual a hall or two back. With that, the feline approached her.

"Good evening." came greeting, deciding on a polite approach even despite his mood. Mozenrath might be a fool, but that didn't necessarily apply to everyone else. Hopefully.

This was almost a nightly routine by now. Sora liked meeting by the stairs. They weren't too far from his room, and most people could find them without a problem. Even though they most likely wouldn't be heading up, it was a good starting point. If they ended up going outside, it would result in a little backtracking, but it wasn't a huge deal.

There was a man and a woman talking near him (he didn't know either of them, but they both looked familiar), and Sora was pretty sure there were some more patients hanging around a little further down the hall, but there was no one he needed to talk to here. He wanted to make sure he didn't move from his spot, since he needed to make it easy for Kaiji to find him.

Hopefully his hair would help him stand out, even if it wasn't a weird color or anything.

Sora leaned against the wall near the stairs, looking almost relaxed as he waited.

[ from here (http://community.livejournal.com/damned/421626.html?thread=34808570#t34808570) ]

Calm and easy. Kaiji moved smoothly, as if he had done this a million times before. If he didn't screw anything up, he assured himself, the reward of whatever he would accomplish tonight would definitely outweigh the cost. Definitely. Even though he didn't know what either was. This was how all of his previous gambles worked: as long as he didn't screw anything up... He wasn't going to. Sora knew what he was doing, and Kaiji was usually pretty good with directions. He determined that the match was going to work as long as the two cooperated.

This was where things started to count. As Kaiji neared the staircase, he clasped his left hand over his flashlight and once again flicked it on to create a dull, orange-tinted glow that, without his notice, emphasized the seams around the bases of his fingers. A few small spikes of white light poked out of the gaps where his fingers didn't quite come together, but on the whole his hand did a passable job at subduing the light's intensity as he intended. He didn't want to blind anyone, and he didn't want to draw a great amount of attention to himself either. He just needed to be able to see.

Something about Kaiji was noticeably different from the way he was this morning (other than the new bruise on the side of his face.). There was a wickedly haughty look about him that was probably amplified by the strange lighting: whether he was afraid beyond fear or genuinely confident was a mystery even to him. What he did know for sure was that from the moment Kaiji met with Sora until the end of the night, their lives were in each other's hands.

Even with the relative traffic of the area, Kaiji managed to spot Sora in the dim light with little difficulty. At least, he was pretty sure that was Sora. "Hey," he greeted tentatively.

There were a few people in the hallway when Leon reached it, and he kept his flashlight off, relying on the light of the others to guide him. There was a young boy standing near the stairs, probably waiting for someone. Leon decided it was probably for the best if he moved by himself tonight, though. He moved past the young man, and headed for the stairs.

The hallways were surprisingly empty. Perhaps she was just being quicker tonight, or maybe this was how they always were - devoid of human life, with the occasional patter of feet as someone fled from a monstrosity.

Celes stepped out into the corridor and considered her options. She could head upstairs and see what kind of new monstrosities Landel had released in the form of their own allies. Or in the form of new, Kefkan-inspired creatures. He gave him credit for Terra; but then again, the story went that she wasn't so much crafted as born. Celes looked down the blacken corridor, where the flash of someone's light flickered about.

She turned towards the corridor of the Sun Room and continued to ponder her path for the night - at least being by oneself had its... advantages.

"We meet again, my lady," came Luxord's voice, calm and cultured as always. There was more of composure to it now, however, having decided to do away with everything he did not care for (which was almost everything, really). The Nobody made his way over to the other blond and cast her a charming smile.

"Are you meeting with someone?" he asked, being ever the gentleman. And it was all the better he saw her first, too. If he had noticed Sora, he would have immediately harassed the boy.

It was strange to travel through the building and actually rely on sight instead of sound. "Listening" for his friends' magical signatures had almost spoiled him when it came to finding them. Tonight, Keman had to use his "flashlight" to illuminate the ground in front of him. It was...almost surreal, and rather humbling. He had to remind himself that most of the other patients couldn't "hear" magic the way that he could. They actually had to do this every night.

It was far more nerve wracking to be traveling alone. At least when he was with Naomi, L could rely on her being there if something happened. Now ideas of a possible attack from a monster were creeping into his thoughts and increasing his anxiety. What if he couldn’t handle it? What if he got injured? What if something happened to him? What if he died ? Come morning there would be no trace of him left. He’d disappear. No body, no evidence, no… He frowned. Hopefully, Naomi will be alright.

As he'd suspected, there were constantly people coming and going from the main hallway. That didn't make it much easier to pick out anyone familiar, as everyone was on the move. Luckily, he still found it easy to see at night due to his former nocturnal lifestyle.

There were a couple people milling around, and one he recognized as the odd man he'd spent a meal with not too long ago. He looked confused, or possibly upset about something. It was hard to tell with that face. Perhaps he was just lost in thought.

In any case, Brooklyn wondered if he couldn't make himself helpful. He made his way towards the man. If he wasn't needed he supposed he could move along and look for someone else.

River felt particularly like the wind today. A green wind, but a wind nonetheless. She could hear the whispers closing in, but she was always one step ahead today. With the halls still empty and more inviting than usual, she continued on.
