Nightshift 34: Main Hallway, 1-West

[from here]

The shinigami padded silently down the hallway, keeping to the left-side wall and her hand upon her sword's hilt. Her eyes scanned the area surorunding her as she continued on to the next hallway, especially the nurses' stations as she neared them. This would be a horrible time for her to get attacked by a nurse or two. Thankfully, the halls were empty, btu she didn't drop her guard. She knew better.

Almost there.

[Coming from here.] (http://community.livejournal.com/damned/425396.html?thread=34840756#t34840756)

It was far more nerve wracking to be traveling alone. At least when he was with Naomi, L could rely on her being there if something happened. Now ideas of a possible attack from a monster were creeping into his thoughts and increasing his anxiety. What if he couldn’t handle it? What if he got injured? What if something happened to him? What if he died ? Come morning there would be no trace of him left. He’d disappear. No body, no evidence, no… He frowned. Hopefully, Naomi will be alright.

L paused once he reached the main hallway. So far so good.

As he'd suspected, there were constantly people coming and going from the main hallway. That didn't make it much easier to pick out anyone familiar, as everyone was on the move. Luckily, he still found it easy to see at night due to his former nocturnal lifestyle.

There were a couple people milling around, and one he recognized as the odd man he'd spent a meal with not too long ago. He looked confused, or possibly upset about something. It was hard to tell with that face. Perhaps he was just lost in thought.

In any case, Brooklyn wondered if he couldn't make himself helpful. He made his way towards the man. If he wasn't needed he supposed he could move along and look for someone else.

L noticed that he was being approached and shined the beam of his flashlight in the man’s general direction. Once he was able to identify him, the detective offered a small smile in greeting.

“Hello, Brooklyn.” He said as ran his thumb against the edge of his lip in thought. From their last meeting, L was sure that Brooklyn was hiding something from him, but that didn’t mean that he didn’t find him untrustworthy. And If Brooklyn was comfortable traveling during the nightshift L could ask him to come along for safety’s sake… That is if he wasn’t already approaching L for another reason. “Do you often travel alone at night?”

[identity profile] manhattan-red.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Brooklyn blinked away as the light was shone near him. Flashlights always limited his field of vision, but he wasn't going to deny a true human the only source of light he had.

"Yes, actually," came Brooklyn's honest answer. "I guess I'm just bad at making plans ahead of time. I've been lucky enough to run into others on most occasions, though."

He shrugged and came to a stop next to the gargoyle-esque man. "You looked a little lost, but I could be wrong."

Seeing Brooklyn blinking, L quickly moved the flashlight away and continued to search through the darkness for potential threats. “What of the few times that you haven’t encountered anyone?” What L needed to know was if this man was one to rely on others for protection, or if he was capable of taking care of himself.

“It is not a matter of being lost, but a matter of traveling alone. I am not very familiar with fighting.” He answered as he scratched the back of his neck.

The gargoyle laughed. "Then I guess they run into me!" He shrugged. "I haven't actually had to spend any of my nights here without someone to explore with. Suppose I've been lucky." Brooklyn could also blame a gargoyle's instinct to protect those that needed it, but he wasn't going to say that part out loud.

He started to say he wasn't used to fighting in the form he was either, but that would definitely bring up more questions. He didn't know why he felt he needed to keep that a secret. It wasn't as if others didn't already know. it just made things more awkward.

"Well I'm armed," he said instead, pulling out the strange blades Skuld had made him. "I can do my best."

Brooklyn didn’t seem all that concerned over being out of his room at night. And it didn’t seem as though the man was looking for someone to protect him either. Meaning that he was comfortable being out here by himself.

L studied the blades the man was carrying and allowed himself to visibly relax a little. If Brooklyn was any threat to L or had felt that he was untrustworthy, he would have not shown them to him. And the fact that he was carrying them meant that he knew how to use them. “I am sure you will.” L said turning towards the rest of the main hall, “This way.”

[identity profile] manhattan-red.livejournal.com 2008-08-22 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
This way? Brooklyn was taken back. The man (what was his name again? Ryu? Something that started with an R...) just expected him to follow without argument? It wasn't as though he had anything better to be doing, and he had been looking for someone to go places with, but he hadn't meant to be ordered around.

Then again, that seemed to be genuinely how the man acted all the time - that bland attitude and speaking as though everything he said was a given. Frowning, the gargoyle decided to do as asked. "Right... And where are we going, exactly?"

[identity profile] el-lolly-eat.livejournal.com 2008-08-22 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)

L couldn’t help but internally curse when Brooklyn had decided to ask where they were going. The question was a fair enough though, and the man couldn’t be faulted for wanting to know. It was just the fact that L had once again gotten in too much of a hurry and forgot an important detail.

“The doctor’s offices.” L answered as he began to walk in that direction. “Have you had any prior experience with them?”

[identity profile] manhattan-red.livejournal.com 2008-08-23 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
"A little..." The last time, and the first time, he'd visited any of the doctor's offices it had been with Cloud. They'd found eyeballs in the doctor's desk drawer. Not the most pleasant of experiences. "They've got some real crazies here. Looking for anything in particular?"

Not that he'd know where to look for anything specific, but he figured he'd ask so he could keep his eyes open.

[identity profile] el-lolly-eat.livejournal.com 2008-08-23 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
“I will be meeting my doctor eventually and I do not wish to walk into the situation unprepared. I believe that it would be best to know who I am up against and observing the individual’s workspace could provide some clues as to what kind of person they are. That, and there is a chance I can find something useful to take from them.” L’s shoulders sagged and his eyes lowered, “Since I have yet to know who my doctor is, this means I will have to go through each office. I imagine it will take more than one night.”

[identity profile] manhattan-red.livejournal.com 2008-08-23 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
Brooklyn blinked. Had they been in any other situation, that idea would have sounded a lot more creepy. In this case he supposed it was a well enough thought out idea.

He supposed it was just the way he said it that weirded him out. Now that he thought about it more, why not look through the doctor's offices? Then again, anything of any importance probably wasn't in a place so easily reachable. "I guess I'll come along if you need someone to watch your back, then."

[identity profile] el-lolly-eat.livejournal.com 2008-08-23 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
L stopped walking and turned towards Brooklyn. “I appreciate it. Since you have been there before would you prefer to lead?” Naomi always insisted that he walk behind her for his protection. This man could want him to do the same.

[identity profile] manhattan-red.livejournal.com 2008-08-24 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
"Uh.. sure, I guess." In the horror movies, it was always the one walking in the back who got taken first, which wouldn't be good if Brooklyn was going to protect this man. Then again, if he was in front he'd be able to take any straight on attack. When Goliath was with them, he usually took the lead. That sounded like the best option, then. He could peer into rooms first and see if they were safe.

"All right," he said with more confidence. "Follow me."
