Nightshift 34: Main Hallway, 1-West

[from here]

The shinigami padded silently down the hallway, keeping to the left-side wall and her hand upon her sword's hilt. Her eyes scanned the area surorunding her as she continued on to the next hallway, especially the nurses' stations as she neared them. This would be a horrible time for her to get attacked by a nurse or two. Thankfully, the halls were empty, btu she didn't drop her guard. She knew better.

Almost there.

It was a flurry of movement all at once, and the creature was only just able to register that its prey had been shoved out of its grasp when the kick connected right with its side, hard.

The cat yowled as it was slammed against the wall and then fell to the floor in a pile, its tail twitching in pain. Luckily, its side had taken the brunt of the hit, which meant that its head was intact and still clear enough to think and process.

The female was on the ground now, which meant that she would be even easier to get its claws into. As the cat pulled itself to its feet, it hissed at the one that had hit it and then jumped for the female a second time, relying on its quick reflexes to ensure that it reached its target this time.

The sound of the cat slamming against the wall was quite pleasing, and it was being kind enough as to get back up again and keep attacking. Better yet, it was going after the annoying girl again.

So long as it was going to not attack him, SubZero decided he could use his powers a bit. The pain was always worse than he remembered it to be, the cold energy freezing and then numbing his hands as he gathered it. Once he had a sufficient amount he launched the energy at the cat.

This was exactly she was trying to head for that shack outside in the first place. Harley was completely unarmed! Even a rake would have been better than nothing. Using the flashlight might have been a good enough solution for a person, but she wasn't sure what it would do up against a cat.

...What was a cat doing in there, anyway? And not just any cat, but a monsterous freak cat not even that CatChick could love. First monster bugs and now monster cats?! Like it wasn't complicated enough worrying about security guards, and orderlies, and grumpy patients who stand in the middle of the hallway for no reason.

Speaking of said grumpy patient, he had actually been able to kick MonstroKitty away. Impressive as that was, it didn't seem to want to stay down and somehow managed to get back up. It was about here that Harley realized they should probably be making a run for it already.

She scrambled to get up from the floor as fast as possible, but even as she did so, she could see that thing charging right for her again. She wouldn't even be able to make it all the way to a standing position before it pounced on her at this rate, let alone turn around and run successfully.

Purely out of instinct, Harley ducked her head down a little and lifted both arms up in a futile attempt to protect herself.

With its prey was so close it could almost already taste it, the cat wasn't willing to let anything stop it. Now that it knew that the other human was a threat, it was more ready for possible attacks.

Besides, a cat's strength was in its speed and reflexes, and though something cold was heading right for it, the creature managed to skid across the floor and get out of the way while continuing to head right for the female.

Seeing how the feline was already rather low to the ground, the patient's attempt to shield herself didn't do much good. Once close enough, the cat leaped in the air right for the girl's chest, intending to knock her back.

So now the cat was going to dodge his attacks? It figured that it'd dodge the more important one, normally he would've just followed up with another blast but he couldn't just do that all night like he had once been able to.

Punching was out of the option, so SubZero chased after the cat, jumping and twisting his body mid-air to add leverage and momentum to his next kick. The girl apparently made for a really good distraction. In fact, so far she was as good at keeping the cat's attention as HK was keeping the bird-monsters.

Why, he had no idea, unless the cats had a taste for women. Or fear, perhaps.
