Nightshift 30: M-C Block Hallway

[[from here]]

It didn't take long to scurry down the short hallway and into the main block one.  His flashlight bounced along as he went, not quite a run, not quite a walk.  He'd feel much better once he was clear of most of the people here.  At least, that's what he told himself.  The truth was, as much as it scared him to face Kurogane or the others, it scared him a lot more to think of facing the things that lurked here in the dark by himself.

Dib hurried along the hallway, his eyes shifting side-to-side in search of significant details he have missed before. "That's funny," he said. "Have the hallways always been this dirty?" As he reached the end, he stopped and folded his arms thoughtfully. "Now did I tell him to meet near the bathrooms or in the bathrooms?" After pondering a bit, he shrugged and went inside the bathroom. That guy sounded smart, he'll figure it out hopefully...

There was hardly anyone out yet, but Archer didn't mind. In fact he preferred to use their absence to his advantage. Keeping his aim low, he turned on his flashlight, making sure not to blind anyone yet.

Heiji stopped to lean against the doorframe for a moment, but continued on. He really hated going to see Homura in this condition, but if he was going to be of any use, he'd unfortunately have to take the man up on his favor. Fantastic, the Groveling Great Detective of the West.

There wasn't any great hurry, considering that one of their group was likely to be late, but waiting around also seemed like an invitation for trouble (if not with monsters, then with other patients.) He kept up a steady pace as he headed for their agreed-upon meeting place. There was no need for a map already in this area, just a decision on routes.

Nakago was beginning to count himself fortunate that he recalled some of the layout of this place. The mental map he had begun in his head the night before was serving him surprisingly well.

This hall certainly seemed familiar... Now, of course, the question was which of these hallways led to M100. He hadn't bothered to pay attention to the cell numbers upon his arrival last night. He supposed he would just choose a hallway and hope it was the correct one. If not, then he would backtrack and try again. It seemed like a safe enough plan, anyhow.

After a moment of debate, surveying each of the four hallways that lay before him, Nakago ultimately chose one and moved into it.

Rounding the corner quickly, Mason spun around, trying to catch any evil creatures in the beam of his flashlight. But the hallway seemed more or less deserted.

"Thank fucking god," he mumbled to himself. Creeping along slowly, he headed for the door at the end of the hall.

It seemed finding someone to accompany him for tonight happened to be less difficult this time. Scar's feline eyes quickly spotted a beam, with a human silhouette to go with it. A human male, he suspected. Sneaking up on this man hardly left a good impression, however. He switched his lightstick on, giving away his presence as he approached the person somewhat cautiously.

[personal profile] vintagebrit 2008-02-27 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
As soon as he saw the other flashlight turn on, Mason whirled around, aiming the beam of his own flashlight at chest-height.

"Who goes there?" he demanded, trying to lower his voice to sound gruff and manly.

He really hoped it wasn't someone who was going to set him on fire again.

[personal profile] longlivetheking 2008-02-27 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"I am Scar, merely another patient passing by." Scar answered smoothly, not intimidated by the man's voice. "No reason to be jumpy, as I mean no harm." A polite smile appeared on his lips.

"And who do I have the pleasure of running into tonight?"
vintagebrit: (confused)

[personal profile] vintagebrit 2008-02-28 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Mason was a little put off by the man's fancy talking, but was determined to pretend that he wasn't.

"I... uh... I'm Mason," he said. "I'm... um... I'm going for waffles." He pointed down the hallway towards the door, moving rather jerkily as he wasn't sure of his footing with this bloke.

The reaper swallowed hard. "I like waffles," he explained.
longlivetheking: (Surprised)

[personal profile] longlivetheking 2008-02-28 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"Waffles?" Scar asked asked, genuinely curious. "Would you care to tell me what these...waffles are?" His eyes followed the man's finger as he pointed towards the door, almost as if he expected to find the answer to his question there.
vintagebrit: (confused)

[personal profile] vintagebrit 2008-03-02 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
Mason raised his eyebrows. Apparently there were people in the world who didn't know what waffles were. That was just fucking wrong.

"Uh..." the reaper started, scratching behind his ear. "They're like... um... like pancakes. Sort of flat and bready, but you put them in a waffle iron, so they have a funny shape. Like, round, but with... with dents in..." He gestured uselessly, stabbing the air with his finger to represent the dents.

"C'mon with me. I'm just going to the kitchen. You can see waffles for yourself, mate," he suggested, and began walking backwards down the hallway, watching to see if the weird waffle-not-knowing fellow followed him.
longlivetheking: (Surprised)

[personal profile] longlivetheking 2008-03-02 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Mason's explanation didn't shed any light on the alien concept of waffles. What in the world were pancakes? Or a waffle iron? What were these waffles for?

"Very well, I will accompany you." Scar answered, following the human man. If anything, the trip to this 'kitchen' would be educational.

Or so he hoped.

Bridget moved into the connecting hall and looked around, glancing back to make sure that Quatre was still with him. "What about your friends?" A nice guy like Quatre should have friends, right? He'd mentioned them before, but where where they?

[identity profile] mylackofeffort.livejournal.com 2008-02-28 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Quatre frowned at the question, worry tugging at him. "I have one friend who I saw earlier today, but the other two I knew were here I haven't seen in a while."

[identity profile] roger-hug.livejournal.com 2008-02-28 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Bridget frowned. "Oh, I'm sorry." He tried to be cheerful again. "I'm sure they're alright though." He wanted to be sure at least. Still... he'd heard so many things about people vanishing overnight that he couldn't help but worry.

[identity profile] damned-monsters.livejournal.com 2008-02-29 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
It had wandered the halls last night, but its prey had continually eluded it. This time it sensed footsteps. Young footsteps. Weak footsteps. Easy-to-catch footsteps.

The sound of its legs clicked against the institute floor as it blindly approached its prey. The clicking sound along the floor was evident first, but the light from their flashlights soon reflected off a pale white carapace, easily visible against the backdrop of the dark hall. The scorpion's tail curled over its head and dripped with a poison that would paralyze its prey, while its pincers opened and closed in anticipation of its first solid meal in weeks.

[identity profile] mylackofeffort.livejournal.com 2008-03-03 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Quatre heard the sounds and forgot all about the conversation about his friends. He saw the scorpion with the light of his flashlight and once again cursed his lack of weapons. He held up the beam to make sure that he could at least keep an eye on the stinger. He knew scorpions pretty well, but he had never seen one so big.

He didn't take his eyes off of it, but prepared to move quickly if it came to you. He wasn't about to just let the thing poison him.

[identity profile] roger-hug.livejournal.com 2008-03-03 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Bridget shifted back slightly. Not in fear, but to get a better look at the creature and the surrounding area. It wouldn't be hard to get around, but it wouldn't be right to leave it for the next group of people to face...

[identity profile] damned-monsters.livejournal.com 2008-03-03 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It approached them slowly, its legs build to move along loose soil, not the hardened floors of the institute, but it could sense them. Its pincers smelled the air, smelling the young and warm flesh that seemed to have stopped in front of it. It stopped briefly itself as the light shined directly on it, then began moving forward at a faster pace.

It was still slow, easily slower than a human could sprint, but it would be upon them soon. Then it wouldn't matter.

[identity profile] mylackofeffort.livejournal.com 2008-03-07 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Quatre held the light steady and glanced at Bridget. The monster might be moving slowly now, but if it were like it's smaller counterparts it's stinger could move pretty quickly. He didn't think simply running would be a good idea, but he also wasn't sure what they should do. He moved the light of the flashlight to the side, to see if the thing was actually distract it, or if it hurt it, considering that it stopped moving when the beam actually hit it. He moved to the side a bit as well, to see if it would be distracted by the movement. At first he was just trying to figure it out, to see how best it would be to either fight it or run from it.

Since no one seemed to be waiting in the hall, Jack didn't waste any time in pushing open the bathroom door and poking his head in. He didn't see anyone yet, but that was probably because it was so dark inside. Without another moment's hesitation, he stepped in.

The same hallway as well. This place was bound to get boring eventually.

It was a guess that Fai was assigned to be in the room a few hallways down, or that he might still be there. A very good guess, however. Last night, Fai had run for that room without stopping, so it was familiar for him somehow. It would have been easier to find a different room - the first on along the hall - or better yet to have just kept running without finding a room. But because he'd picked that room over all the other, smarter options, Kurogane knew it was likely Fai's designated room.

As for him still being there-- Fai was aware that Kurogane was in this world now. With his reaction to having seen him at first, he had the feeling that Fai wouldn't have left his room out of fear. And not just because of last evening's events. There had been the incident in the Sun Room as well. Knowing Fai, he would have tried his best at staying as far away from Kurogane as was possible, for now.

[identity profile] contentincloset.livejournal.com 2008-03-05 01:20 am (UTC)(link)

Going back the way he'd come was an option, but so too was the pathway he'd taken the night before. The way Fai'd given him was shorter considering his destination. That would be the way he'd take. Unless he found it blocked somehow. He had a feeling there might be another monster waiting along the way simply because of that she-beast he'd seen in the Recreational Field. Of course, he'd fight it if he had to, but his own desire for blood wouldn't be determining what he did or didn't face tonight.

[identity profile] rectifies.livejournal.com 2008-03-09 02:36 am (UTC)(link)

As Ken entered the doorway into the male block, he could vaguely tell there were others in the hallway. Without a flashlight, however, he could only guess who they were and what was occurring on their end. Hopefully, nothing bad.

He held door just wide enough for Yukari to catch and waited patiently until they were both safely in this hall.

[identity profile] remedying.livejournal.com 2008-03-09 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yukari slid in behind him, also picking up on others. Whatever they were doing, she wasn't planning on bothering them. If she were honest, she didn't want to, if only because the one thing she'd rather do above all else was to collapse somewhere and not move, period.

[identity profile] rectifies.livejournal.com 2008-03-09 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't good to stand around and watch others. Plus, the energy exertion was becoming too much after that tussle with the spider. He kind of needed to sit down for a while, and that could not be done until they were in his room.

So as soon as Yukari was in, the boy took off toward the end of the hallway.

Xelloss had to wonder if the Clinic saw many tourists. Really, this little exercise in exploration might not be a bad choice for a nightly direction. Since nothing particularly unusual seemed to be going on tonight (unless one counted the doctor ranting about killing someone) he might get a rough idea of how busy the location usually was.

They might even be drafted to help. He knew human healing techniques sometimes required extra pairs of hands to hold supplies for the actual, trained healers, or to hold flesh together while it was stitched shut. Now, wasn't that a nice way to work up a good reputation, and all it would require would be a willingness to get one's hands a bit bloody! "Do you suppose they'll want volunteers to assist them, considering we aren't actually wounded?"

[identity profile] heraldric.livejournal.com 2008-03-19 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
"It's possible..." Leon knew a couple things about stitching people up, but not a whole lot. That wasn't his field of study. He certainly had steady hands, though. Came from working with devices that required absolute precision. And he was small, so it wasn't like he'd be taking up too much space.

"They may be crowded, though. With as much as people get injured here, just a handful of them knowing about the clinic's existence would be enough to fill up any regular patient room." Those rooms were somewhat cramped as they were, certainly not the best location for healing people. But then, he supposed any other location would be too dangerous.

Falis lead her group into the black hallway, eyes scanning the area, before stopping by the door that lead to the bathrooms. Her crimson gaze quickly found the small scuffle going on in the one end of the hall.

"Huh. Scorpion," she pointed out, nonchalantly, and casually rest the spear upon her shoulder as she tracked the progress of the fight from her position by the door. The monster looked pretty feeble and relatively easy to defeat if one used the right tactics and at least the thing was slow. She had no reason to remotely worry about it.

"In you girls go," she said to the senshi with a small jerk of her head to the bathroom door. "You too, my chivalrous knight lacking in armor," she said to Kunzite. "If we leave you out here you'll just end up scorpion food at the moment."

She cast a smirk over at the man. "And while an entertaining thought, it'd only end up inconveniencing the rest of us. We stick together. Besides, you smell just as much as the rest of us do."

[identity profile] icy-pole.livejournal.com 2008-03-19 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
Ami hid a smile at Falis' comment to Kunzite as she followed the older girl through to another hallway. She stopped as she saw two people being attacked by a scorpion, concerned. Glancing at Falis, the other girl didn't seem to be too bothered by it, and she was in much better condition to fight than anyone else in their group. Ami was sure that Falis wasn't the kind of person to walk away from someone who needed help.

Opening up the door cautiously, Ami entered the dark bathroom first.
