Day 27: Library

Libraries, he'd found, were rarely as dull as people made them out to be.  Though he felt no magic in these tomes, they were still full of useful information.  Maybe some of them could tell him a little bit more about this world he'd landed himself in.

For that matter, why hadn't he run into any of the others yet?  They'd all been fairly close together when they'd left Rekord, but he hadn't seen a trace of any of them.  He was able to communicate easily with the people here though, which led him to believe Mokona was within a mile or so.  Unless the ones running this little game had some other way to let all these other-worldly people communicate amongst themselves.  In which case, the others could be very far away indeed.

The library had that wonderful smell of old books, and Fai traced his fingers along the shelves, skimming titles and pulling books that struck his fancy.  Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz, The War of the Worlds, and with a smile, he found Bram Stoker's Dracula as well.  Raven had been telling the truth then, in spite of his own lies.  Ought to be a good start.  He sat leisurely at one of the tables and began flipping through his selections.

"Do the staff have any weapons?" By this point he wasn't too hopeful that they'd have blasters he could take, but if there was that possibility...

[identity profile] empty-death.livejournal.com 2007-09-29 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Faust nodded. "They do from time to time," he said. "But I'm not sure if what they carry will be of any use."

[identity profile] loyal-soldier.livejournal.com 2007-09-29 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"Anything would be better than nothing." Unless it was likely to backfire on you. Nasty habit of some old blasters, but pretty funny to see happen to a rebel. "And what are the animals like? What sort of creatures are they?"

[identity profile] empty-death.livejournal.com 2007-09-29 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Faust thought about that. "They are like regular animals," he began, "Except larger, more aggressive, and, in some cases, dead." He smiled. "That doesn't make them less dangerous."

[identity profile] loyal-soldier.livejournal.com 2007-09-29 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"What counts as 'normal animals' on this planet?" Normal could range from harmless fluffballs to 30 meter monsters, depending on the planet. "And dead? How is that dangerous?" Dead in his experience meant relatively safe.

[identity profile] empty-death.livejournal.com 2007-09-29 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Faust tried to think of a good way to explain, then looked around the library for a moment. Nothing of use here...

"Cats, dogs, insects, bats, birds, reptiles."

[identity profile] loyal-soldier.livejournal.com 2007-09-29 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
He had a general idea what all of those were like. Although the only thing he could think for reptiles was either as vermin or things with too many teeth. "What's the size range on these things?"

[identity profile] empty-death.livejournal.com 2007-09-29 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"Between a mere kilogram to a full ton or more, from what I've heard of and seen." The insects that had attacked him certainly shouldn't have gotten that big, nor the rodents.

[identity profile] loyal-soldier.livejournal.com 2007-09-29 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Quite the size range. At least he knew what to look out for now. "Thank you for the information. I only just arrived this morning."

[identity profile] empty-death.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Faust nodded. "I'm sorry then," he said, "That you have found yourself in this place." He sighed softly. "Has anyone explained much of what's going on?"

He wasn't much of a teacher, but the last thing Faust wanted was someone walking around unprepared.

[identity profile] loyal-soldier.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"Some of it. I've heard about the man over the radios at night, but not much else." And he still didn't like what he had heard about that man. He didn't trust him.

[identity profile] empty-death.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Faust nodded. "The man over the radio, who calls himself Jack, and the Head doctor will bicker back and forth during the night. Trust what and who you will or won't as the case may be." Faust frowned.

"It's the night staff you should really worry about. From what I hear, they enjoy experimentation, kidnapping, murder, and brainwashing." He shrugged slightly. "And it appears to be random."

(Anonymous) 2007-09-30 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that was new. "So they take people each night? Do you know how many?" Just so he could know what his chances were with this.

"And do you know anything more specific about the brainwashing and experimentation?" He had his own preceptions of both, from his time training on Kamino. He didn't want anything to do with that sort of thing.

[identity profile] empty-death.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Faust shrugged once more. "It seems to vary from night to night," he said. "And if you want to know more about the experimentation and brainwashing, ask someone that's gone through it."

He looked around the room. "I don't know anyone personally, but you can ask around."

[identity profile] loyal-soldier.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
622 nodded. This was just all incredibly surreal. The last few minutes he remembered on the Death Star had been confusing enough, but he had reached some sort of clarity at the end of it. He had been totally prepared to die.

...And now this. It was completely jarring.

[identity profile] empty-death.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Faust was quiet for a moment, thoughtful. "There are a few other interesting things about this place...." He tilted his head. "There has been talk of people waking and finding their body structure changed into one a little more .... human."

[identity profile] loyal-soldier.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
622 looked at the other man in confusion. "Some of these people aren't originally human? How is that possible?" He had no predjudices against non-humans, even if Imperial policy was heavily weighted against them. He was a clone, after all, he wasn't really supposed to have an opinion on anything.

[identity profile] empty-death.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"If you believe what they say then, yes," Faust said simply. "Some of the people here are not human." He frowned once more in thought. "Some far from it..."

The former doctor shook his head. "There is also talk of bringing back the dead, but I don't know how far to trust such an outlandish claim." The forced casual tone he took said otherwise.

[identity profile] loyal-soldier.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
He didn't say anything in response to the first. He had remembered something like that mentioned on the bulletin when he had gone to post a quick message, but he had discounted it before.

"...I think it can be trusted." He still didn't quite believe his own memories, but he certainly wasn't losing faith in them. "I think I died, just before coming here."

[identity profile] empty-death.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Faust perked instantly. "Really? But you aren't certain?"

Bringing back the dead... truly bringing them back... Faust had to calm himself down, had to think.

[identity profile] loyal-soldier.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, I couldn't exactly get a second oppinion on it, could I?" Except he had from the Captain here. But he wasn't up to the idea of believing that the destruction fo the Death Star was shown as fiction in a holovid with an odd title.

"I remember up until the point that I'd guess my body disintigrated in the shockwave from a massive explosion. There was no way I could have survived."

[identity profile] empty-death.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Faust looked far more interested now. "Fascinating...," he muttered, looking over the other man's form. "And to have given you back a body and brought you from the other side....

"Would... I'm sorry, this is terribly rude of me to ask but, would you object to an examination at some point? I'm interested to find out how this place managed something so .... incredable."

There was the chance that he was lying, but Faust was desparate.

[identity profile] loyal-soldier.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
"What exactly are you thinking of doing?" 622 did not like the idea of an 'examination', especially considering the circumstances. It really made him think too much of a post mortem. He didn't know what the hell had happened to him, but he was pretty damn sure this was just an ordinary body, no different from the one which was probably now a small cloud of atoms in a decaying orbit around Yavin.

[identity profile] empty-death.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"Just a simple exam, like a physical." Faust didn't think that asking this from someone he didn't know was odd.

"I've only heard rumors of people coming back from the dead, but you're the first person I've actually met who made that claim."

[identity profile] loyal-soldier.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"Fine." As long as their respective deffinitions of a physical were relatively similar, he wasn't immediately against the idea. He wanted to know what the hell was going on with himself. But if anything was done without a suitable ammount of warning, 622 thought he'd be well within reason to assume intentions were hostile.
