Day 27: Library

Libraries, he'd found, were rarely as dull as people made them out to be.  Though he felt no magic in these tomes, they were still full of useful information.  Maybe some of them could tell him a little bit more about this world he'd landed himself in.

For that matter, why hadn't he run into any of the others yet?  They'd all been fairly close together when they'd left Rekord, but he hadn't seen a trace of any of them.  He was able to communicate easily with the people here though, which led him to believe Mokona was within a mile or so.  Unless the ones running this little game had some other way to let all these other-worldly people communicate amongst themselves.  In which case, the others could be very far away indeed.

The library had that wonderful smell of old books, and Fai traced his fingers along the shelves, skimming titles and pulling books that struck his fancy.  Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz, The War of the Worlds, and with a smile, he found Bram Stoker's Dracula as well.  Raven had been telling the truth then, in spite of his own lies.  Ought to be a good start.  He sat leisurely at one of the tables and began flipping through his selections.

"What exactly are you thinking of doing?" 622 did not like the idea of an 'examination', especially considering the circumstances. It really made him think too much of a post mortem. He didn't know what the hell had happened to him, but he was pretty damn sure this was just an ordinary body, no different from the one which was probably now a small cloud of atoms in a decaying orbit around Yavin.

[identity profile] empty-death.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"Just a simple exam, like a physical." Faust didn't think that asking this from someone he didn't know was odd.

"I've only heard rumors of people coming back from the dead, but you're the first person I've actually met who made that claim."

[identity profile] loyal-soldier.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"Fine." As long as their respective deffinitions of a physical were relatively similar, he wasn't immediately against the idea. He wanted to know what the hell was going on with himself. But if anything was done without a suitable ammount of warning, 622 thought he'd be well within reason to assume intentions were hostile.

[identity profile] empty-death.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Faust smiled again and nodded. "When would be a good time for you?" He couldn't do it now, no matter how much he wanted to, since all his equipment was hidden in his room still.

And he wasn't rude enough (or mad enough) to demand a time and place.

[identity profile] loyal-soldier.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't know the schedule here, appart from the basic layout of the shifts. It seems doubtful that the staff would just let something like that happen." He was also more than a little worried about the prospect of hostiles interrupting any such thing if it took place at night.

[identity profile] empty-death.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"They certianly would not. Night is the best time," Faust said. "No interference from the staff then and, provided you remain in a paitent room, the night creatures will leave you be."

He tilted his head. "What is your room number? Perhaps I can meet you there? Or in mine? Or even midway?"

[identity profile] loyal-soldier.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Fairly reasonable, even if it did mean being alone in a confined space with someone very close. Which never seemed to turn out well, from his past experiences... "They had me in a temporary room when I woke up. I don't know if it has a number." He hadn't seen one, although he was more than a little dazed at the time.

[identity profile] empty-death.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Faut nodded. "I am in M-30," he offered. "The halls are very straight-forward once you start to walk them. M for male and F for female. The numbers are listed on the doors and the blocks are simple to follow."

He frowned, thinking. "If your plans change and you will be doing something else this evening, don't worry about letting me know."

[identity profile] loyal-soldier.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
622 nodded. "I'll find you if possible." Giving a deffinite answer on that would have seemed pretty disingenuous to him at the moment. "I've been ordered to find a civilian to protect." By a Captain from an army he had never heard of. The man seemed like a good enough officer, but why the hell had he accepted the order?

[identity profile] empty-death.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Faust nodded and accepted the answer. He would be ready for whatever happened.

"Who is it that you are looking for? Perhaps I might be of assistance in locating them?" Faust may not have known many people here, but that didn't mean he didn't remember faces and names when he'd heard them.

[identity profile] loyal-soldier.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"Just... any civilian. Someone who doesn't have much combat experience." A person that was generally referred to by Stormies as 'baggage'.

[identity profile] empty-death.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Faust blinked. "That's... an interesting order." He looked around the room. "There are a number of children and adults here who fit that description. I suppose even I fit that description." At the moment anyway. Without his abilities, he was just a normal man, weak, thin, and slow. A typical medic. He frowned in thought.

"You weren't given any other specifics? That could make this either very easy or very difficult. Many people already here have formed alliances and may or may not take well to a new person wanting to join with them."

[identity profile] loyal-soldier.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"No other specifics. I could guard you, if that would be acceptable." Honestly, it looked like a guard might be a good idea for this man. "I'm used to having armor and a rifle, but I'm well trained for CQC." He really didn't feel like mentioning his prior experience with acting as a bodyguard. It still made his chest feel oddly tight, just to think about it.

[identity profile] empty-death.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Faust frowned. "I would have no problems with that," he said slowly. "Though I'm certain there are people who would benefit far more from your services than a doctor like myself."

Though, Faust could see the sense in it...

"How about this," he finally offered. "In return for you protecting me and thus fulfilling your orders, I will help you and your, er, leader and his or her group with any medical problems you may have, from first aid to major injuries and illnesses." It was a chance to try to help and Faust couldn't pass that up.

[identity profile] loyal-soldier.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"The Captain said he would be otherwise occupied during the night, but he might have found others to join up..." 622 glanced around, finding the Captain talking to... he had no idea who, but he looked like he was military of some type. "The Captain's the one over there, with the blue stars on the shoulders." He liked the Imperial cog symbols on his own shirt better, but that was just his own bias.

[identity profile] empty-death.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Faust took note of the man pointed out to him and nodded. "Captain... I see." Faust frowned slightly. Agreeing to work with someone like this reminded him of Yoh and Anna. He needed to return to them as soon as possible. They might not need him, but he was still a part of the team. Without three, they would be disqualified.

"I will speak to him at a later time," he looked back at the other man. "Unless you see him before I do." He smiled. "If you would let him know of my offer?"

[identity profile] loyal-soldier.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"I will. A medic is always a great help." As long as more complicated things were required than 'bandage that cut', or 'do your best to hold your guts in'. Tracheotomies in the field were always a favorite...

Looking over at the Captain, he was reminded of something. "I've been told about... have you ever seen something called 'Star Wars'?" It still sounded insane to him, but...

[identity profile] empty-death.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Faust smiled and nodded. "We certainly try to be," he said. No mention of how often he'd turned that knowledge of healing to causing great pain.

At the question, Faust frowned and thought hard. "It... sounds familiar," he admitted slowly. "I believe there was a military operation hinted at in the United States a long while ago with that name ... and something about a film as well." He shook his head. "I'm sorry if that's not what you're talking about. I am rather behind on global cultures."

[identity profile] loyal-soldier.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, the first was quite new. "I hadn't heard of the former, but the film was what I was referring to." He'd deffinitely have to ask the Captain about the military program...

"Apparently, the station I was on when I died was shown in this film." Which should be impossible. But quite a lot of impossible things had been going on lately...

[identity profile] empty-death.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Faust nodded, still frowning thoughtfully. "I'm sorry to say that I don't watch many films so I haven't a clue what you're talking about."

[identity profile] loyal-soldier.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"Neither do I. About the films, I mean. Appart from the fact that... well, in the film, the government I fight for is defeated." Which was a depressing and frighteningly possible idea.

[identity profile] empty-death.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Faust frowned. "That is rather depressing," he said. "But, unless it was a documentary or something of that nature, I wouldn't take it to heart. Fiction is fiction."

[identity profile] loyal-soldier.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"The existence of the station was not made public until recently. They couldn't possibly have known about it for as long as it seems they had." Not enough time to make a holovid about it blowing up, in any case.

[identity profile] empty-death.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"Then I wouldn't believe it at all," Faust said with a nod. "Don't forget about the rumors of alternate realities."

[identity profile] loyal-soldier.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't completely believe it, but I've got little else here." The stuff about other dimensions just made his head spin even worse than the holovid business, so he tried to not give it too much thought.
