Day 27: Lunch

Renji wasn't so certain what this grilled cheese thing was all about, but he liked the sound of some soup. Even if it was strange western soup, well... there wasn't anything bad people could do to soup, in his experience. His good mood was starting to fray at the edges, a little, from the strain of dealing with the Ichimaru issue, and even more from what had been on the bulletin board earlier.

He'd never had difficulty simply writing something before. But...

He shook his head as he entered the line. He didn't want to think about it. He wanted to hold on to the tenuous equilibrium he'd managed to find.

Renji got himself a large bowl of soup, water, and even one of those sandwiches, just to try it. Old habit, recently awakened, had him over to one side of the cafeteria, where the fewest people possible would have the chance to pass behind him. He sat there with his back toward the wall and started eating.

The boy that-... she infected

So she had actually managed to test her virus on someone before her brilliant idea to test it herself had killed her? William purposely ignored Wesker's near slip up in favor of a better topic, such as viruses. This boy that was mentioned... the doctor recognized the Burnside name, but only slightly. It had not been a name worth a second glance until now.

"And you've met him before?" William quizzed curiously before glancing, finally, at the newcomer. Was this Krauser? Which virus was being tested here? Wesker had only briefly mentioned that wretched girl's virus, the G-virus and the alter virus William had given Wesker, so which did this man supposedly have in his possession? "You are Krauser?"

[identity profile] no-side-effects.livejournal.com 2007-09-29 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
"...She... came back to life after you died. Apparently she needed to be in stasis for many years for the virus to work properly," Wesker continued on the subject about Alexia and her virus. "I wanted to get a sample after she died, so I raided her facilities. She infected Burnside so I took his body after he was killed, to observe in case he came back to life as well."

"Krauser has a virus, and a parasite that was discovered in spain recently," Wesker never had been fully able to recreate the virus that William had given him in it's pure state.

[identity profile] plaguedred.livejournal.com 2007-09-29 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
"That's me. It's called las plagas," Krauser said, keeping his voice low. "Lot of fun. Most control the host through the nerves of the spine and lower brain, takes the rest of the brain over as it grows." He shrugged. "Mine's an exception. Some work more as symbiotes."

Well, in a way. He didn't know how much of his body would actually be him one he hit, say, fifty. But that was a distant worry.

"The viral strain I have isn't all that impressive." He refrained from adding someone was on a budget. "Mostly, healing factor, and I got a decrease on that just like most others."

[identity profile] g-resolution.livejournal.com 2007-09-29 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
It made sense, he was a fool to think that irritating girl would have simply died. No, cockroaches did not go away unless the job was done personally and even then it was questionable. William would have to keep this in mind for the day he grew bored of this place, just so he could deal with that brat when the time came.

"So this Burnside should recognize you?"

The one day he was without his notebook was the day that yielded the most information... Why could Wesker have not told him this any sooner?! Oh well, he'd have to commit the information to memory until he could get some paper after the end of lunch.

"Any increase of muscle mass before arriving here?" William questioned, clearly intrigued by the thought of this new parasite. "Strength? Agility? Speed?"

[identity profile] no-side-effects.livejournal.com 2007-09-29 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"No, he didn't see me at all. I was only interested in the Redfield girl," But that was beside the point. Neither of the Redfield siblings were here, so there was no point getting all worked up over them.

He might as well let Birkin question Krauser to satisfy his curiosity. "Tonight we're going to search upstairs for a lab."

[identity profile] plaguedred.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, sure, pass the egghead off on him. Wesker was the genius, wasn't he supposed to handle this sort of thing? Krauser flicked an irritated glance at him.

"Not so much muscle increase as you'd think, to look at me." People tended to think he used steroids, but before the infection he'd looked much like he did now. "Speed? Yeah, in short bursts, not half as impressive as," he carefully doesn't look at Wesker, "some you probably know about. No change in agility, some in durability, and an increase for strength. Like I said, though, when I woke up here there was a lot I couldn't do anymore.

". . . oh, yeah?" Wesker's statement catches his attention. He didn't have much interest in a lab himself, but once Wesker and Birkin got rolling he was pretty sure something would come to stop them. "What's the goal?"

[identity profile] g-resolution.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Redfield? Yet another piece of information that Wesker was withholding from him? Perhaps one of these days William would actually get all of what happened after his death from Wesker just yet. But that would have to be addressed later.

No sizable difference in muscle mass, not so much increase in speed, no increase in agility, a large increase in strength and some increase in durability. All of which were lessened here. William hoped that this 'not too impressive' viral strand was the cause of all this, because he was already bored with the parasite if otherwise. If anything, he was reminded of Marcus' leeches, useless at best unless utilized with ingenuity. Right now, the parasite in question did not sound like it had been utilized very much at all.

"Do you already have a sample of the Burnside boy's blood, or are you waiting until a lab of merit is found?"

[identity profile] no-side-effects.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
"I would like to see the results for the three of us first and find the lab equipment before I try to get a sample off Burnside," Wesker wanted to pick Birkin's brains for the secret to the virus in his blood, or perhaps find a way of recreating it based off any potential samples of it they might get out of his blood.

"I want to test people here to see if they are still infected. My virus isn't contagious, and won't infect anyone or anything else, but if Birkin and Burnside still both have their viruses..." Wesker wasn't sure how the virus would act in a situation like this. If this place could stop it from causing mutation in Birkin and Steve, or if they could keep it from spreading.

Though... he didn't think that either of them would be able to transmit the virus to someone else until they began to display symptoms. If they did still have the virus it was likely in numbers too small to cause any real effects.

[identity profile] plaguedred.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, hell. --how contagious are you?"

Krauser hadn't seen pictures of Birkin pre-infection, but Birkin post-infection was an absolute hit in a number of top-secret files.

"So, what, Burnside accidentally bleeds on someone and we have to smash skulls?" It could be done, but Krauser obviously felt things were getting out of hand.

[identity profile] g-resolution.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
...How contagious? William sent Krauser a long look which clearly questioned just exactly what he was on before realization kicked in. Did that mean Krauser held information about his mutation after the injection? Ignoring the question, William peered at the other man, his eyes sharp and calculating.

"So the mutation worked successfully?" the doctor asked, sounding as if he was asking about a toy he had made rather than being himself infected and mutated beyond recognition. William sent an accusing look to Wesker. "And you didn't tell me?"

[identity profile] no-side-effects.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
"You mutated out of control and infected the chief of police, but his body rejected it. You tried to infect Sherry but she was cured before the virus could set in. Then Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield killed you, I took samples from your corpse, and Raccoon City was nuked," Wesker frowned at Birkin, who was apparently upset about not being told what had happened after he injected himself.

"I would hardly call what happened to you 'successful'." Wesker's eyes glowed briefly at the word 'successful'. He really hoped that Birkin wasn't going to stay mad at him over this.

[identity profile] plaguedred.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
"My question stands," said Krauser, who was prepared to be stubborn about this. "If he's infected, what's to stop the whole mutation problem from starting over again, or spreading? What's the trigger? I don't exactly want to loose a raging success when we don't even have any damn rocket launchers."

Not that it wasn't an excellent backup plan: shank Chuckles here and escape while he was adding orderlies to his mass. But there were too many risks to make it his first one.

[identity profile] g-resolution.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
There was that name again. Redfield. Was that girl everywhere disaster struck? But that was no matter, William had learned what he wanted to know and, fortunately for Wesker, he had immediately forgotten he was even upset at his partner in crime. After all, he gained the information desired, there was no further reason to hold a grudge.

"Perhaps not," William agreed wisely, recognizing Wesker's displeased attitude. "But there's always next time."

...And what was with this facility and overactive idiots? William wasn't going to even bother answer Krauser, instead opting to give the man a long, blank stare. Was all of Wesker's idiots men like this one...? William knew Wesker had a healthy amount of self control, but to keep himself from killing this one for how long was admirable.

[identity profile] no-side-effects.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
"William isn't infectious right now. He would have to have been displaying symptoms for some time to even begin to do that. And even then, the chances of him actually successfully infecting any one here would be so low that I wouldn't even consider it an issue," That was the unfortunate part of the G-virus, once it was injected into a person the virus itself mutated along with it's host, and it was very difficult to infect anyone else.

The chances were significantly increased when trying to infect a close blood relative, but thankfully no one here was.

"The G-virus produces far superior BOW's to the T-virus, but unfortunately it's nearly impossible to transmit to someone else after it's been exposed to an organism."

[identity profile] plaguedred.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Several Umbrella-caused disasters happened while Krauser was a loyal US soldier. Some memories just didn't recast themselves that easily.

Especially with two major players of the Raccoon City outbreak failing to take this particularly seriously. He tilted his head a little, leaning back in his chair, and considered the people around him in a rather new light.

Maybe it was time to open his options outside following Wesker's lead.

"We've got samples of all three of the century's most powerful viruses under one roof," Krauser said, "in a controlled environment, in bodies out of stasis, where they may or may not be starting to activate and mutating.

"You're the scientists, but I've seen more than enough to be ready to take this seriously." God, he missed his knife. Step one had shifted to screw listening to Wesker, find a shiv.

[identity profile] g-resolution.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Now, who said they weren't taking this seriously? They were, in fact, taking to heart just how wonderful the idea of managing to get a working sample of the viruses. Or at least William was. Krauser just couldn't tell because he was too busy hyperventilating over every worst case scenario possible.

"If you cared to listen," William started, giving Krauser a bored look. He was never one for horror stories. "You were just told that unless I begin showing symptoms, ones which should be fairly obvious, then I am not capable of infecting any other organism in the least." Such a pity really. "Wesker has never been infectious to begin with so unless you're going to go salivate over everyone and get them infected in some way, you're just making yourself look like a fool." One which really needed to be silent sometime soon.

[identity profile] no-side-effects.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"This place should be suppressing all mutation that could occur from the G-virus. You really should leave all the thinking to us when it comes to this sort of thing, Krauser. The T-Veronica virus has to be injected in order to actually infect someone. It also creates impressive BOWs, but it doesn't transmit easily from person to person after it's initial mutation inside the host," That, and there were a few other things that apparently needed to be explained to Krauser here.

"If you recall, I said we needed to test to see if we still had the viruses. This place might have eliminated them entirely. The reason I want to find out is not to determine if they are going to mutate, but to find out if this place is actually preventing the virus from running it's course without eliminating it entirely. You need to look at the big picture here, Krauser," Perhaps he shouldn't have brought Krauser to this meeting. He was turning out to be almost more trouble than he was worth at the moment.

"Krauser, the monsters here are all you need to be concerned about," And he would be excluding Krauser from all future meetings he had with Birkin... this was just unacceptable.

[identity profile] plaguedred.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Krauser settled back in his chair. Right. These two were directly involved in T-Virus outbreaks in Arklay Mansion and Raccoon City. One had seen the Rockfort outbreak. The files that had told him about the Sheena Island outbreak and the Spencer Rain contamination. . . well, he'd seen those from the US government's side, but he was willing to bet Wesker also knew the full stories for those.

And these two geniuses were going to rely on the force that weakened them all for someone's entertainment as their HAZMAT protection, and start waving around vials full of supervirus on a hurried night-by-night basis in a place where everyone was trapped.

That was the big idea he'd been relying on? And Wesker thought that was the best way to handle him? Definitely it was time to have a look around for someone with a better plan.

He couldn't just ditch them, though. He had no allies outside these two. . . and maybe he'd need to be on hand to prevent something. So he fell silent, tipping his glass of water to Wesker in a silent salute and draining it.

[identity profile] g-resolution.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
William could honestly see none of the problems Krauser was having with the plans Wesker had presented. Neither virus was airborne, contact had little to no effect (unless ingested and/or injected directly into the bloodstream) and despite William's hopes, the more possible result was that the viruses in their bloodstream were too diluted for use.

But William was going to hope for otherwise.

Regardless, at least Krauser had actually gone silent.

[identity profile] no-side-effects.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Wesker wanted to sigh or shake his head or do something to express the exasperation he currently felt.

Instead he opted for something that William would be able to sympathize with, muttering softly, "At least we don't have to deal with Doctor Marcus," Of course, Krauser probably wouldn't get the full reference behind that. There were only three people alive who knew about that little detail of the outbreak in Raccoon city, and two of them were sitting at this table.

Wesker pulled off his sunglasses and rubbed at his eyes before replacing them, careful not to let anyone see his eyes while he had his sunglasses off.

[identity profile] plaguedred.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Krauser let them talk. Right. His plaga was active; best to assume at least one virus was.

And just. . . wait and see. Something would come up, or he'd see a chance to make some new options.

[identity profile] g-resolution.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Wesker's mutterings were not lost on William and, in an uncharacteristic religious moment, he replied with an "Amen!" because if there was anything to praise a higher being for, it was that. Though it could have been done a lot quicker...

"Let's hope it stays that way."

[identity profile] no-side-effects.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
"Very well, I believe that is everything that needs to be discussed right now, this meeting is over," And just in time, too, he could spot a trio of nurses heading in their direction.
