Day 27: Lunch

Renji wasn't so certain what this grilled cheese thing was all about, but he liked the sound of some soup. Even if it was strange western soup, well... there wasn't anything bad people could do to soup, in his experience. His good mood was starting to fray at the edges, a little, from the strain of dealing with the Ichimaru issue, and even more from what had been on the bulletin board earlier.

He'd never had difficulty simply writing something before. But...

He shook his head as he entered the line. He didn't want to think about it. He wanted to hold on to the tenuous equilibrium he'd managed to find.

Renji got himself a large bowl of soup, water, and even one of those sandwiches, just to try it. Old habit, recently awakened, had him over to one side of the cafeteria, where the fewest people possible would have the chance to pass behind him. He sat there with his back toward the wall and started eating.

"My question stands," said Krauser, who was prepared to be stubborn about this. "If he's infected, what's to stop the whole mutation problem from starting over again, or spreading? What's the trigger? I don't exactly want to loose a raging success when we don't even have any damn rocket launchers."

Not that it wasn't an excellent backup plan: shank Chuckles here and escape while he was adding orderlies to his mass. But there were too many risks to make it his first one.

There was that name again. Redfield. Was that girl everywhere disaster struck? But that was no matter, William had learned what he wanted to know and, fortunately for Wesker, he had immediately forgotten he was even upset at his partner in crime. After all, he gained the information desired, there was no further reason to hold a grudge.

"Perhaps not," William agreed wisely, recognizing Wesker's displeased attitude. "But there's always next time."

...And what was with this facility and overactive idiots? William wasn't going to even bother answer Krauser, instead opting to give the man a long, blank stare. Was all of Wesker's idiots men like this one...? William knew Wesker had a healthy amount of self control, but to keep himself from killing this one for how long was admirable.

"William isn't infectious right now. He would have to have been displaying symptoms for some time to even begin to do that. And even then, the chances of him actually successfully infecting any one here would be so low that I wouldn't even consider it an issue," That was the unfortunate part of the G-virus, once it was injected into a person the virus itself mutated along with it's host, and it was very difficult to infect anyone else.

The chances were significantly increased when trying to infect a close blood relative, but thankfully no one here was.

"The G-virus produces far superior BOW's to the T-virus, but unfortunately it's nearly impossible to transmit to someone else after it's been exposed to an organism."

Several Umbrella-caused disasters happened while Krauser was a loyal US soldier. Some memories just didn't recast themselves that easily.

Especially with two major players of the Raccoon City outbreak failing to take this particularly seriously. He tilted his head a little, leaning back in his chair, and considered the people around him in a rather new light.

Maybe it was time to open his options outside following Wesker's lead.

"We've got samples of all three of the century's most powerful viruses under one roof," Krauser said, "in a controlled environment, in bodies out of stasis, where they may or may not be starting to activate and mutating.

"You're the scientists, but I've seen more than enough to be ready to take this seriously." God, he missed his knife. Step one had shifted to screw listening to Wesker, find a shiv.

Now, who said they weren't taking this seriously? They were, in fact, taking to heart just how wonderful the idea of managing to get a working sample of the viruses. Or at least William was. Krauser just couldn't tell because he was too busy hyperventilating over every worst case scenario possible.

"If you cared to listen," William started, giving Krauser a bored look. He was never one for horror stories. "You were just told that unless I begin showing symptoms, ones which should be fairly obvious, then I am not capable of infecting any other organism in the least." Such a pity really. "Wesker has never been infectious to begin with so unless you're going to go salivate over everyone and get them infected in some way, you're just making yourself look like a fool." One which really needed to be silent sometime soon.

"This place should be suppressing all mutation that could occur from the G-virus. You really should leave all the thinking to us when it comes to this sort of thing, Krauser. The T-Veronica virus has to be injected in order to actually infect someone. It also creates impressive BOWs, but it doesn't transmit easily from person to person after it's initial mutation inside the host," That, and there were a few other things that apparently needed to be explained to Krauser here.

"If you recall, I said we needed to test to see if we still had the viruses. This place might have eliminated them entirely. The reason I want to find out is not to determine if they are going to mutate, but to find out if this place is actually preventing the virus from running it's course without eliminating it entirely. You need to look at the big picture here, Krauser," Perhaps he shouldn't have brought Krauser to this meeting. He was turning out to be almost more trouble than he was worth at the moment.

"Krauser, the monsters here are all you need to be concerned about," And he would be excluding Krauser from all future meetings he had with Birkin... this was just unacceptable.

[identity profile] plaguedred.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Krauser settled back in his chair. Right. These two were directly involved in T-Virus outbreaks in Arklay Mansion and Raccoon City. One had seen the Rockfort outbreak. The files that had told him about the Sheena Island outbreak and the Spencer Rain contamination. . . well, he'd seen those from the US government's side, but he was willing to bet Wesker also knew the full stories for those.

And these two geniuses were going to rely on the force that weakened them all for someone's entertainment as their HAZMAT protection, and start waving around vials full of supervirus on a hurried night-by-night basis in a place where everyone was trapped.

That was the big idea he'd been relying on? And Wesker thought that was the best way to handle him? Definitely it was time to have a look around for someone with a better plan.

He couldn't just ditch them, though. He had no allies outside these two. . . and maybe he'd need to be on hand to prevent something. So he fell silent, tipping his glass of water to Wesker in a silent salute and draining it.

William could honestly see none of the problems Krauser was having with the plans Wesker had presented. Neither virus was airborne, contact had little to no effect (unless ingested and/or injected directly into the bloodstream) and despite William's hopes, the more possible result was that the viruses in their bloodstream were too diluted for use.

But William was going to hope for otherwise.

Regardless, at least Krauser had actually gone silent.

[identity profile] no-side-effects.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Wesker wanted to sigh or shake his head or do something to express the exasperation he currently felt.

Instead he opted for something that William would be able to sympathize with, muttering softly, "At least we don't have to deal with Doctor Marcus," Of course, Krauser probably wouldn't get the full reference behind that. There were only three people alive who knew about that little detail of the outbreak in Raccoon city, and two of them were sitting at this table.

Wesker pulled off his sunglasses and rubbed at his eyes before replacing them, careful not to let anyone see his eyes while he had his sunglasses off.

Krauser let them talk. Right. His plaga was active; best to assume at least one virus was.

And just. . . wait and see. Something would come up, or he'd see a chance to make some new options.

[identity profile] g-resolution.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Wesker's mutterings were not lost on William and, in an uncharacteristic religious moment, he replied with an "Amen!" because if there was anything to praise a higher being for, it was that. Though it could have been done a lot quicker...

"Let's hope it stays that way."

"Very well, I believe that is everything that needs to be discussed right now, this meeting is over," And just in time, too, he could spot a trio of nurses heading in their direction.
