Nightshift 39: West Wing, North Hall 1-A

[from here]

Miles slowed again as he entered the hallway, due to another sharp spike of pain in his head. This time, it was accompanied by a louder rumble, one that almost sounded like garbled words.

He swept the beam of his flashlight from side to side. "Now, see? Nothing - and no one - is there," he muttered, hoping that would silence the voice's insistent worry. It was starting to get both annoying and worrisome at the same time. What was making it react like this? He couldn't think of anything, and the intercom announcement hadn't indicated anything particularly worrisome, either.

He sighed and continued down the hallway, continuing to scan for anything in the shadows with each step.

Everything remained quiet and still, aside from the lone man walking past (how he loved his uniform. He could see them, but they could hardly see him). It appeared the brunt of the patient body had failed to leave their rooms as of yet, so this meant Luxord may have to play the waiting game for the Death God. Ah well.

Spider emerged into the hallway, and ran north, vaguely recalling a shortcut to room M90 through the recreation field. His screaming gave way to a voiced internal monologue.

"Walking down these halls is like scurrying down big throbbing veins in an ogre's cock. I wish it'd hurry up and come already."

They hadn't arranged any sort of meeting place, but Sai just assumed he would head to Usopp's room first since that's what he was the most familiar with. Thinking about it now, if Luffy was the captain then should they not be meeting in his room?

Perhaps he'd get there before his friend could leave. He sped up his pace.

So far he hadn't run into anything. Dean hoped tonight would be better than the last couple of nights: he could do without a repeat with Company Man, that ice cold bitch in the rec field or any spirits. All he wanted was a good, old-fashioned throw-down with Punk-Ass and for it to end with that bastard tied to a chair in M2. Hopefully Sam was doing okay. The kid was more than capable, but Dean worried for him - there were some things out there that no level of school smarts or street smarts or whatever could prepare you for. A literal knife in the back was one of them.

Sora was surprised to find the hallway empty. Did people not usually come this way? But there was a patient block right here, so that didn't make sense. Plus, lots of people went out onto the field, right? Maybe he was just early.

Shrugging, he took advantage of the fact that the hall was completely open, breaking into a jog so that he could make his trip to the field even faster. It was nice to run when he wasn't in the middle of a fight or something like that. Maybe it wasn't a good idea to tire himself out like this, but he was allowed to let loose sometimes, right?

Plus, it really sped things up. He'd made it to the door leading outside in no time! He considered just waiting near the door for Allen, but then he realized that the other boy might be using the parallel hallway to get out. He was just going to have to stick around outside, even though it might be a little more dangerous. Without further ado, he cracked the door open and slipped through.

"Slag!"

Depth Charge sucked in a lungful of air as his calf came sharply into contact with the next door. Stupid fragging human optics! He was really going to have to find another light source; if he wasn't careful he'd be all shades of bruised before the night was out.

Murmuring oaths, he stumbled on through and into the next hallway.

Kunzite noted that the light in his flashlight was beginning to flicker a bit. Shaking it in an attempt to remedy the situation, the swordsman sighed disappointedly; its power supply must be running low, he thought to himself. I should replace them when I venture out tomorrow. The strobe-like device still allowed him to continue forward, however, and into the next hall.

Again, empty...but no matter. Starscream was close. He quickly propelled himself down the hall with his now-warming legs and slipped into a door on the right.

It was lucky for Miku that Subaru's room was only a hop-skip-and-jump from her own block; if she'd had to travel outside, or through the institute to get to him, Sousuke would've had a conniption fit. Miku was particularly tired of seeing his angry face. She liked him better when he was shy and well-meaning.

Miku sighed and pushed open the door to the men's block. At least the head doctor was sleeping - it meant he wouldn't be interrupting her instruction.

This hallway was slightly vaster than the one that held the cellblocks, but still very, very dark. Various inmates crossed this corridor, slightly illuminating the place with their light-emitting rods.

No sign of creatures. Lockdown stood aside, waiting for Starscream to take the lead again.

Oh yes, there was definitely something invigorating about taking the lead for once! While Scarecrow was technically directing the route of this trip, Kaiji was the one who knew the Institute better. The only disappointing part was that as far as he knew, he really had nothing to gain from this.

That was, unless the staff of Landel's was keeping the booze in the cooler with the bodies of mythical creatures or whatever. Would that be messed up beyond belief or pleasantly surprising? Maybe a bit of both.

Speaking of which, it probably would have been wise to ask Scarecrow where exactly they were going. With any luck he'd be able to give a name or at least a description.

He could ask when things got more complicated than a few hallways.

Scarecrow clicked his light on and off absentmindedly as he followed Kaiji through the hall, trying to take in the atmosphere. This place was a lot less inviting at night. It was strange to see people out and about, free from their nurses and restrictions. He kept his hand along the wall as they walked, trying not to have another nasty fall. If he was going to keep up with Kaiji's pace, he'd need his legs in working order.

Speaking of pace, where were they going? Oh yeah, the third floor! he thought. There must be some way up there.

Casting a wary eye at the other patients -- he still hadn't seen anyone he recognized from their world, and no one had recognized him -- Suzaku all but ran down the hallway to its southern counterpart. He couldn't take this trapped, lost feeling anymore, and he wished he could just strike out on his own and try to find something useful. But he needed Lelouch, and the other boy wasn't going to get very far tonight. He'd have to settle for sitting around and having another uncomfortable conversation.

Tony didn't pause as he headed out of the dorm block, long strides hurrying him along toward the next branch of the hall. There were a few people already out, though it was hard to judge the general volume by that section. He marked it off as a late start, and quickened his pace.

If he remembered the map correctly, Clayface was in Hall 1-A, and had to make a choice - left or right? No reason not to take the shortest route, and he was curious what the outside looked like, so he turned to leave to the soccer field, still following the wall on his left.

It wasn't like Punk-Ass weighed a ton, but trying to travel fast, quiet, and not even at full strength? Dean was grateful he was still hopped up on adrenaline; now to just make it back to M2 without buckling. True, he'd been recovering since breakfast and finding Sam again, but he found his breaths were coming in pants as he again shifted the dead weight. Dean grit his teeth and chugged onward, heading down the dark halls back to the block he'd originally come from.

There weren't many people in this hallway either. It was giving him goosebumps, wandering around alone in the dark in some hell-hospital. He felt like he should be keeping an eye out for some loony in a Halloween mask wielding a twelve inch knife.

It was one thing to jump around rooftops, sling himself into an alley to beat up a mugger and then zip back out again. In New York, he always knew what he was doing, where he was going - plus eighty percent of the time he had a guaranteed advantage. Here though? He had nothing. Zilch. Nada. Save for the map, but what good was that in the dark? And the eerie Bates Motel vibe this place had going on wasn't helping his confidence any. The sooner we all get out of here, the better.

He moved cautiously, eyes darting from shadow to shadow as he advanced towards the open doors.

They were only getting closer to the field, now, and Yue was growing even more uneasy. His wings would have once been half-flexed and feathers ruffled, ready to move at an instant with the awareness of potential danger, but now only his shoulders were stiff with tension.

He did, however, take a moment to explain his previously cryptic words just a tiny bit more. "On the other side of the field is a shed with sports equipment. Including bats." Yue glanced over his shoulder briefly in Touya's direction. "I had one, before, but...lost it." Else he would have just given it to Touya and saved them both the trouble.

[identity profile] guardiancomplex.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
"You lost it?" Touya frowned. Yue didn't seem like the type to 'misplace' things. Maybe a monster took it from him? What kind of a monster would steal a bat, though?

Probably the same kind that would masquerade as someone's mother. Or something like that. He didn't know. He didn't know much about what it was like around here, so if Yue lost it, he lost it. Unless he was lying again. Either way, Touya would find out something about the place he was in now.

"How did you lose it?"

Slipping into the next hallway, Jason glanced towards the door leading to where he'd gotten jumped last night. It was no colder here than where he'd just come from so either the meta from last night wasn't out there or she hadn't started flinging ice about yet. Whatever. He wasn't going that way tonight.

Moving quickly towards the entrance to next hall, Jason gave the other bodies he could make out in the dark a wide berth. It was likely they were all captives as well, but he'd rather not risk it by getting too close. Not when he was in a hurry. Later when he'd armed himself he might go looking for a fight just for the hell of it but right now he didn't want to miss on getting a weapon. He could fight just fine without one, hell he loved a good brawl, but a knife would be useful.

Stopping to the side of the door, Jason waited just long enough to be almost certain nothing was waiting in the next hall before stepping through.

Dias glanced down the length of the hallway. Several patients, but no monsters, and he was fairly certain it wasn't a brainwashing night; somewhere in his head, he'd begun keeping track of that. It seemed wrong to have to keep a schedule for that sort of thing at all, but it meant that there were fewer obstacles to be encountered on experiment nights at the very least.

After gesturing back to Claude and Guy to indicate that the coast was clear, he glanced at Guy. "Claude mentioned you have some skill with a sword," he remarked, without preamble. "Can you utilize your style effectively with a blade like that?" He knew the triangular shape of Ashton's swords were unconventional, and he had to wonder if it was going to hinder Guy any.
nobleman: (steel the pressure and the pain.)

[personal profile] nobleman 2009-03-08 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
Guy didn't have a huge preference about where they went once they made it to the basement, so he figured they would decide once they actually got down there - if they made it, that is. Just because they had been lucky last night didn't mean that their good fortune would continue. In fact, odds were that it wouldn't, if Guy considered how many attempts he'd made to reach the basement.

Then again, that could have been because of who he was going with. There was a chance that with Claude and Dias at his side, they were just more efficient.

When Dias directly asked him a question, Guy was somewhat surprised, but he didn't hesitate to answer. He glanced down at the sword and shrugged. "It isn't exactly what I'm used to, I'll admit. I generally use a longer blade, but I'm sure I can manage." He wasn't going to trip them up if he had anything to say about it.

Okita had said that he had been pushed up in the queue, so hopefully he wouldn't have to wait too much longer before he had a sword that was better suited to him.

Alright, this was getting ridiculous. While it was true that Porky needed all the help he could get, it would certainly be more helpful if Diego could move faster than a turtle. Honestly! How hard was it to walk?

Calm down, Porky. Porky thought to himself, It's all going to be worth it in the end.

Turning around, Porky forced a smile.

"Getting along alright, Diego?" Porky asked, trying to hide his annoyance, "Walking certainly is difficult, isn't it? You can walk on all fours if you'd like. If that would be faster, then it would be perfectly alright with me. Seriously. If it would be faster, then you should probably do that instead."

[identity profile] oober-tracker.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Diego had considered walking on all fours, but with a body like this... he'd been witness to humans trying to crawl on their hands and knees before, and the sight had been a laugh. They moved, if it was possible, slower than he was right now. Even disregarding the fact that Diego really didn't want to get laughed at, trying to bend down and walk the way he was used to probably wouldn't get him very far. Besides, what was he supposed to do with the hammer, hold it in his mouth when his teeth were shorter than claws?

Diego was about to tell Porky Minch this when he was stopped by a sudden familiar smell drifting down from the direction they were not going in. He stopped and looked that way, confused. There was outside in that direction. Grass and trees and the sky, mixed together into a tantalizing scent that hung in the air around him.

"Why aren't we going that way?" he asked, indicating with his head. "If you're trying to escape, there's fresh air over there."
