Nightshift 37: Main Hallway, 1-West

[From here]

As she entered the hallway, Ophelia stopped for a moment to quickly fold up Kio's maps and stuff them into one of her pockets. She had been hoping to take a peek at them at various intervals during the night, but in this dim light, there was no chance of being able to see them. For now, she would have to travel by memory of where she had been taken during the day.

At least this time the choice of where to go was easy. On one side she could just barely see the hallway ending, and on the other it continued for a ways. The path that continued would surely lead to the Sun Room and the areas around it. She started running again with a grin spreading on her face, emboldened by the long, seemingly unobstructed length of the hall. Perhaps she would find her first challenge of the night soon.

The passage through these halls were tedious. The longer she'd here, the more she wishes she could just shunpou to the captain's room. She sighed; it'd be easier, quicker but so exhausting here.

By now, Ken felt the soft pangs of muscle fatigue from his left hand, obviously due to the items he was carrying. It was weird; usually, he had managed more weight during longer treks. He had not expected to become so tired so easily.

Gritting his teeth, the boy pressed forward. Stopping now would only worsen the load.

Finally, the open hallways. Now there were more people scattered around, if she looked far to her left. As usual, they tended to conglomerate around the doors to the Sun Room, waiting for each other and preparing to venture into the basement. One day, she thought, that would serve to destroy them all; something would lie in wait there and attack whoever came by, effectively rendering one important path of travel useless.

But it probably wouldn't be her, so she didn't particularly care.

With a smile starting to creep onto her face as the anticipation of finding cake began to build, GLaDOS made her way to the right, toward the nearby staircase. She paused at the edge of the steps and glanced around again, just in case something was lying in wait. Or at the top of the stairs. There was always that problem, of course. It would know her from the beam of light her flashlight gave off.

She turned it off. Just in case. Stairs were, while awkward, not difficult to climb.

No good, nothing yet.

The vampire rubbed fitfully at an area next to his injury, hardly recognizing the increase in pain. He had more tolerance than that, and it having been a constant distraction in the back of his mind all day had gotten him well-acquainted with it. What had him wary was the knowledge that one good blow to the chest would ruin what healing had already taken place.

He wasn’t losing blood anymore, and he wasn’t fighting for breath. But that girl had still twisted a sword around in his chest, tearing muscle and lung. At the rate his repressed healing worked, a day wasn’t near enough to take care of such wounds. That wasn’t even taking into account the amount of blood he’d lost…

From Aidou’s position in the shadows, he glanced around the hallway for onlookers with narrowed eyes, more careful to stay out of sight than ever. No one to worry about, yet. No potential prey, either. No easy targets. No good chances.

He moved a little further down the hallway, then stopped. The door to the stairwell was open. Not strange, considering the amount of traffic it got. Still, he shifted a little closer on soundless feet, noting one female figure poised at the bottom with a flashlight, one that was quickly turned off. The vampire rocked slightly on the balls of his feet, took another look around, almost lulled by the darkness the woman had surrounded herself with.

Foolish, in a way. There as much danger in complete darkness as there was security. (Because there always creatures that hunted better in the dark.)

Moving along the wall, hand shielding the beam of her flashlight, Beatrix continued on to the meeting point. She idly wondered how Ophelia was handling the night.

When Kurogane came to the larger hallway, he slowed as he always did and gave his attention towards both directions. No fights this time or even the scent of blood. That was good, he supposed. It meant that whatever fighting was going on hadn't heated up yet. However, if had to guide those two girls around he needed to get them and go before that could happen.

He quickly turned down the right part of the hallway and rounded back into a patient hall.

She didn't see any of the other team seven members out yet. Did that mean she was the first one? And no creepy glowing monsters either. Well, she couldn't say she was sad about that. Sakura didn't waste time looking down the far end of the hall, instead hung a quick left and continued on.

As he'd remembered, this hallway offered Depth Charge a few more opportunities than the previous ones- there were a couple of flights of stairs that led up to the second floor, and to his left lay the Sun Room. There was something oddly liberating about walking into an area whose choices weren't confined to 'this door' or 'that door'.

All he needed now was someone who could give him a few pointers. Not that he needed help, of course; the last thing he wanted was some smelting 'expert' holding his hand out of pity, like he was some kind of slagging sparkling. A push in the right direction, now, that was all he needed.

Shining his torch about the hallway expectantly, he pressed his back to the wall opposite the place where the two other hallways joined this one and waited. The first likely-looking candidate could expect a blinding light to the face and a lot of defensiveness.

Javert flexed his bandaged hand experimentally as he rounded the corner; it wasn't nearly as stiff as it had been this morning. That, at least, was one good thing about the place.

He noticed someone waiting against the wall here, but took little notice of him, choosing to assume, as was logical, that the other man was simply waiting for someone else.

Yuuhi didn't see many people out in the halls yet, probably a good sign. Maybe they'd get done quickly so they could actually enjoy anything they might find. Wouldn't that be something.

He wasted no time, turning the corner and going back up to the next dormitory hallway.

It would be better to take the stairs on the far western end of the hall, despite the fact that the stairs were closest to the experimental facilities here. It was unfortunate, but he would have to go past that area. Hopefully there would be patients already trying to rescue those taken for experimentation so he could slip past unnoticed.

There appeared to be another patient heading in the same direction Wesker was, but he gave her no attention, and continued on up the stairs as quietly as he could without slowing down.

Clark stopped once he hit the main hall, glancing around a little nervously. Standing in the darkness, straining to listen if anything was sneaking up on him, Clark found himself wishing again he could see his family and friends again, wishing he could talk to them just about normal things, not about monsters or supplies. And there was also Brainy.

He had only known him for an hour. But Clark believed he told the truth, even if he looked as human as everyone else. There were just too many details that were close to what he knew of the truth, about Krypton, about the rumor of a survivor, even that name "Jor-El". Hearing it again got him thinking, wondering just what had happened in the storm cellar that night when he'd heard something call to him and seen that bright warm glow. Coming down those stairs, stepping into the light - Clark had thought that was all that happened and then he blacked out and woke up in Landels. What if there was more to it? What if he'd seen and heard more and the knowledge was still there? What else happened in the storm cellar that he couldn't remember?

Clark reached up and unconsciously scratched at his chest, rubbing at it with one free hand. It itched a little like he was wearing uncomfortable clothes. He didn't notice it, or notice he'd begun to feel it after meeting Brainiac 5.

Kvothe switched his light back on and took a breath of relief when he saw Clark and not more of the glowing creatures. He relaxed a bit as he waved and went over. "Hi. I'm glad you're all the way down here, they've got the next bit of hallway guarded." He gestured back the way he came with his flashlight.

This part of the route was quite familiar by now, though the guardian was still careful to keep a wary eye out for anything that might be lurking in the darkness around them. After several more moments of walking in silence, though, he finally cast a sidelong glance toward Fai. "Where did the coat come from?"

He did have to admit that he wasn't terribly fond of the grey clothing and the rather irritatingly cheerful yellow smiling face, but he still wasn't certain he'd want his old clothing back at this point. The ear cuff that he'd found the week before was still sitting at the bottom of his closet, untouched for the last two nights now, after all

He had a feeling he might get asked about it. His outfit was normal enough in Celes, but here it stuck out visibly compared to the other drab grey pajamas most wore.

"Hn... I don't really know. It was on my bed when I went to dinner," he explained in his own special way, which really didn't explain much at all.

"It's cute though, right? You wanna try it on?"

Leon had walked these same halls so many times by now that he had to really focus in order to avoid letting his guard slip--it felt like familiar territory, even though experience told him that things could change in an instant, and that nowhere was safe.

Nothing terribly interesting was happening here at the moment, though--just people talking--so Leon hurried on through on his way to the next nearest men's bathroom. He wasn't about to enter the women's bathroom, even for the purpose of stealing metal.

As Peter reached the stairs, he realized that there were already a few patients heading up there -- on their own. That didn't seem like the best of ideas, but it wasn't like he could judge. Wasn't he the one who had rushed off on his own to Odessa because he'd thought a cheerleader needed saving? He might have been intending to meet Hiro there, but when that hadn't worked out, he had gone to Union Wells by himself anyway.

He was playing it safe now, though. He had already witnessed the way that people's minds could be warped here, and seen day to day the injuries that patients sustained. He'd just seen Wally, who had been forced to use crutches - while Peter knew that he wouldn't worry about the threat of death if he was in a situation where he had to risk his neck to help someone else out, he could at least try to take preventative measures.

Which was why he wasn't following those other patients up the stairs. He was going to wait here until Elle showed up (unless she never did), and then they would tackle this together.

There were a few pairs of patients gathered around and talking, but Peter did his best not to eavesdrop out of courtesy.

Elle snuffed out the electricity before she stepped into the main hallway, wanting it to be a surprise when she showed it to Peter. Without it, she could barely see, but the beam of his flashlight further down the hallway pinpointed him nicely.

"Hey Peter," she said flirtatiously, smirking as she made her way over to him. One of her hands slid up his back while the other went to his face, and she released a tiny spark into the tip of his nose.

It made a world of difference being in her uniform. Even if she was technically not on duty (being a prisoner on some other world/demention thing was starting to make that almost a given), it was a bit like a security blanket. She felt like she could blend in better with the shadows, take any approaching enemies by surprise better.

That alone kept her mood higher as she turned down the hallway just before the sun room.

It still wasn’t as busy as it sometimes got.

Now that Yuffie thought about it, she wasn’t sure what was better - a near deserted hallway that she could move through quickly, or a more crowded hallway that could offer more opportunities to slip around and be sneaky? And, not to mention, more people to hide behind if any monsters decided to come say hi.

Not that she was a coward, or anything! She was just… practical.

Sometimes.

As she stepped into the main corridor, she kept her ears pricked. Tsubaki didn't sense any disturbances, and definitely none as bad as the night she'd met Kurogane, with the overpowering smell of blood...

There were other people in the dark, though, most with flashlights, and some she thought were passing by without one. With the mental map of the hallway's turns and doorways fixed firmly in her mind's eye, aided by the dim glow of other's flashlights, Tsubaki made her own way across the hall to the doorway beside the first lobby. One of the stairwells leading to the second floor.

The door was open. Did that mean people had already gone up? She didn't want to imagine it'd been the people led away for "sleep studies."

There wasn't much to see in this hallway either. That was a good thing too, since MOMO didn't want to spend too much time lingering in the halls. Things tended to sneak up on you when you lingered, so she hurried on her way without pausing.

Aidou didn't fear being spotted now that he was back in the main hallway, even with more and more people trickling out of the cell blocks. A vampire wearing muted colors while in pitch black conditions? There was no chance the prisoners who needed to use flashlights would catch a glimpse of him, not unless he suddenly decided to step into a pool of light on purpose.

That only left others who could see perfectly well in the dark, and monsters. And as long as he kept moving, avoiding the usual deformed foes would, at the very least, be possible.

He took a deep breathe, one that still pinched, and continued on his way.

No sign of Xelloss yet. Good. Anise didn't exactly want to bump into him before she got this taken care of. It would make her look rude if she found him waiting only to tell him to wait even longer.

He did say he was going to be a little late too, though. For a moment Anise wondered what the self-proclaimed mysterious priest could be up to that might slow him down, but quickly dismissed the thought. She was too occupied to start worrying about what everyone else was doing right now.
