Night 37: Main Hall 2-West

[from here]

Coming to a cross hallway, Falis stopped and knelt down again. In the darkness, she couldn't see where the hallway lead, nothing more than a few feet immediately in front of her. Unbeknown to her, the stairs she needed to go down to the first level were just to the right. Falis had the same feeling as she had back at that dead end, so she didn't think there was anything down that hallway.

Seeing some very faint light to the left, the hunter headed that way. Once she found light, she could get her bearings.

When Obi-Wan heard the details from Schuldig, his mouth pursed into a thin line. He'd never had the opportunity to meet Artemis' roommate, but if he was the sort who was deadly when on edge, then it would be better not to provoke him.

As they approached the boy, the Jedi made sure to keep his senses stretched out in an effort to detect any threats well before they could make their move. Even then, however, he was able to pick up on the tension radiating from the dimly lit figure. Although he specialized at negotiating with people during dire situations, for now he focused on keeping guard. It sounded as though Schuldig was more familiar with the boy than himself, and his telepathy could certainly prove beneficial in trying to put this Haku at more at ease.

(Altering posting order with permission.)

At the first sound behind him, Haku was already moving, three scalpels in his hand flying towards the source of the voice. He didn't care who it was, it wasn't someone he currently recognized.

Of course, at the moment, he probably wouldn't have responded favorably to anyone aside from Zabuza-san or Artemis.

So sneaking up was a bad idea, but they were going over there anyway? Farfarello sighed a little and kept himself between Schuldig and the "ninja boyfriend" in question, wishing that he'd actually managed to meet the boy at some point.

The attack that followed Schuldig's greeting was not really unexpected, and Farfarello responded entirely instinctively at first. He raised his left arm, feeling a faint thudding pressure as the scalpels buried themselves point-first in his forearm. Blood oozed down his arm, a distraction and a hindrance if he wanted to grip anything with that hand. Bugger. Meanwhile, Farfarello drew a couple scalpels of his own with his right hand.

It was only at the very last nanosecond that Farfarello managed to stop himself from throwing the scalpels at the dark-haired boy. Right. Don't cut the boyfriend. He kept them at the ready, though, just in case neither Schuldig nor the Jedi managed to calm the ninja down.

Schuldig scowled slightly at the sound of blades sinking into his partner's flesh. He hadn't seen the flying objects very well, but he was a telepath - he knew what they were, because Haku knew. Scalpels were small and their blades short, so Farfarello probably wasn't badly hurt...but it was still irritating. All the more so because the attack had been meant for him.

Had everyone somehow missed the memo? If Schuldig wanted to give people a good reason to try to kill him, all they had to do was ask. In fact, asking was generally optional. But the standard procedure was for him to do something to earn threats and attempts on his life first.

Touching Farfarello's shoulder lightly in a wordless expression of gratitude, he stepped out from behind the Berserker to stand beside him instead, giving Haku a pointed look. "Artemis would hardly thank you if you killed me. Hell, he's probably not going to be wild about you embedding scalpels in his friend's arm, either. Do all ninja just completely fall apart when they panic, or is it just you?" Yes, the last part was probably thoroughly unwise as far as talking the boy down went, but he was justifiably annoyed.

Obi-Wan had sensed the scalpels flying through the air, which immediately put his reflexes on edge. As the one bringing up the rear of the group, though, he wasn't the one who had to take the brunt of the attack. The Jedi was aware of the way Farfarello held up his forearm, presumably to block the blades from hitting Schuldig.

It didn't take a diplomat to know things were going downhill fast. And he wasn't sure he trusted Schuldig's abrasive personality to pull them through, telepathy or no.

"We're here to help Artemis, and to help you," the Jedi spoke up, his voice calm and steady. This boy was obviously acting out of fear and suspicion. It was best to make their intentions as clear as possible, otherwise they wouldn't get anywhere with him, and their efforts in rescuing Artemis would be hindered.

Not taking his eyes off the man that had taken his hit, Haku smiled. It was an empty manuvering of muscles. "Perhaps. Are all of you eager to annoy a highly strung ninja when hiding behind someone, or is it just you?"

Haku straightened from his defensive posture, considering the men across fromhim without taking his eyes off any for too long. Three men. Apparently all knew Artemis. That gave Haku very little to work with. The chances that one of them was the telepath Artemis had spoken of was high though so....

Haku began to think and 'project' the happiest memories he had. Most involved rabbits, playing in the snow, and the bloody praise he reaped. He had dealt with others who could read thoughts an intentions from people, and had studied what he could of them. The most important thing was to give nothing away. He'd already failed in that.

"I don't need help," he said softly. "Though Artemis does. And if you are heading that way .... I see no reason not to join you."

Farfarello stared at Schuldig for a moment as the telepath apparently did his best to make the situation worse. He appreciated his partner's concern and annoyance on his behalf, he really did, but Farfarello also rather wanted Haku to calm down so that more sharp objects did not come flying their way. Fortunately Obi-Wan was there, and his words seemed to get through to the ninja at least somewhat.

Deciding that the danger of attack--at least attack from Haku--was over, Farfarello put away the scalpels he'd drawn from his supply. Then he plucked out the ones embedded in his arm, cleaned the blood off them, and tucked those into his clothes as well. As far as he was concerned, if one threw something at him, he got to keep it. Haku was not getting those scalpels back, friend of Artemis' or not. "Are we done here? I'd like to move on."

"Son of a bitch," Schuldig swore angrily, not quite under his breath, although Farfarello at least would recognize - judging by the faraway look in his eyes - that he'd tuned out of current events and was likely reacting to something going on some distance away. Haku's efforts to hide his thoughts from Schuldig were, ironically, entirely unnecessary at the moment.

Fortunately, a lifetime of telepathy had taught Schuldig to expect questions regarding things only he was aware of, so he preempted any inquires with an almost immediate explanation. "That captain Arty is so fond of, the one who runs the arts and crafts club - he's about to die all the way on the other side of the damned building. And he's calling for me, of all people. What he thinks I can do about it from here, I've no idea..." He glared down the hallway in Hitsugaya's general direction, as if blaming the shinigami for his own lethal predicament - which, to some extent, he did. "There's no way any of us could get to him in time - not from this distance. Clearly it's 'Fuck With Fowl' night and nobody sent us our invitations, because this is just going to make everything so much more pleasant for him." And, by extension, for Schuldig, although the telepath at least had enough insight to realize that Haku would probably not have much sympathy for his grousing about how Artemis' trauma added to Schuldig's personal inconvenience, so he kept that to himself.

As irritating as it was, the simple fact of the matter was that there was nothing to be done for Hitsugaya. He honestly didn't give a damn about the captain for his own sake, but rather simply for the effect his death would have on Artemis, who did matter to Schuldig in his own aggravating way. And, as with all things that mattered to Schuldig, needed constant maintenance. This would only make that harder, but it was just something he was going to have to live with.

And Hitsugaya's stupidity of going off on his own was something the captain was just going to have to die with.

Having resolved that there was nothing they could do for Hitsugaya, Schuldig tuned him out in order to refocus on the matter at hand. "We're moving," he stated flatly. Whether or not Haku was in fact resolved to join them or not didn't make much difference to him at the moment, provided the boy stayed out of their way regardless.
