Nightshift 34: F1-10 Hallway

Okay... that was creepy, thought Sheena as she stared up at the intercom. She glanced around her room nervously, balled up pieces of discarded paper strewn all over the floor by her. The man sounded like a seriously screwed up Desian that liked to toy with people... like Kvar did. Shuddering, the guardian picked up the cards she'd made with an ink-stained hand and fanned them out.

Alright... not the greatest work she'd ever done, she had to admit, but only three of them felt a little off when she concentrated on them. A few smudges of ink shouldn't matter anyways. Fanning herself once, she then folded the cards back up and looked down at her inky hands. "Stupid pen. Why did it have to break so easily? I was just trying to figure out where the ink was, NOT get it all over me. I hope I don't have any on my face..."

If she did, she was certain Raine would point it out to her. As long as the half-elf didn't do that weird lick her thumb and wipe it off thing she'd seen her do to Genis more than enough times, Sheena would be fine. If not... well... she'd glare at Raine or something. Grabbing her flashlight and cards, Sheena lamented the lack of an obi as she left her room.

Now where was F18?

"They're really fantastic, then - just as fashionable as they are powerful," Shiki began. "I'll have to ask her later about them."

That really was something, that the other girl could keep her powers and even use psychs like that. It gave her some hope that one day, she'd be back up to full speed, too.

She took a few moments to collect herself, well aware of Ururu in the room and how badly the younger girl would scold her react if she overused her powers even accidentally. She wasn't really been paying attention to the girls' conversation, but she was glad they were keeping each other company. This must be sort of boring to watch.

She sent out the ShunShunRikka again. The half oval of green light spread across the length of the cut and stretched thin. It was deeper than it looked, but hopefully she'd be able to close it up entirely too. Working gave her precious few moments to get her head in order.

"Actually, it's really silly." She replied, feeling her face turn red even while she made herself look at him. "I know you're busy like the other shinigami, but we're going to play tag tomorrow in the park. Would you like to come? Even if it's for a few minutes, you're welcome to."

She felt stupid for asking, and she was sure her friends would tell her she was crazy if they could hear it. He worked for the man who'd kidnapped her, hurt her friends, and betrayed all of the shinigami in the worst way. But good or bad, he still got hurt and bled like the rest of them. She wondered if Ichimaru got lonely, too.

She felt herself getting dizzy, but she pushed it a couple of seconds before the ShunShunRikka returned to their place. The cut had healed entirely, and Orihime felt exhausted. She just hoped she still had enough in her to heal Matsumoto too.

Of all the requests or questions she could have asked, he honestly hadn't expected anything like hers. Why did you hurt my friends? Why betray everyone? What are you aiming for? It could have been any of those, many questions she had every right to ask, but instead she was inviting him to come and play a children's game tomorrow in the park. For a moment he was at a loss.

As he pulled his shirt back on, thankful the wound had closed and there wasn't even a scar left to show for it, he had to wonder if her offer was genuine. Why on earth would she want him to come? Even if he did show up and even if she said he was welcome, he had a feeling the others wouldn't feel the same way. Of course, being the cause of awkward tension among the other shinigami was terribly fun in its own way.

"Not silly at all darlin'," he replied, standing to tuck his robe back into his hakama, surprised at how much better he felt after just a few minutes. Inoue, on the other hand, looked fairly tired. "I do thank y' for helpin' me out, but as far as games go, I'll admit I'm a lil' outta practice. Maybe I'll jus' come watch."

He gave her a few minutes before he walked toward the door, knowing full well that in the evening every moment was precious, but he wasn't about to send her out if she couldn't even walk. "Don't wanna keep ya," he said, giving them an out. "M'sure the others are wonderin' where you're at, hn?"

Ururu nodded, sure that Orihime would tell Shiki everything she could. It was especially good since it might help Shiki get some of her powers back. What wouldn't be good though, would be if Shiki overused her powers like Orihime did. Two of her friends doing that would be worse than just one, because Ururu didn't think she could carry them both too well.

Ururu was just as surprised when Orihime asked to play tag, and kind of happy he said no. She didn't say that though, because she didn't want Orihime to feel bad. Then Gin left after a few minutes, and Ururu relaxed, moving quickly to Orihime's side.

"Are you okay, Orihime-san?" The little girl wrapped an arm behind Orihime's back to support her, just in case. Then she turned her head to Shiki, offering an explanation so she wouldn't worry. "Orihime-san gets really tired when she uses her powers."

Shiki's eyes were wide open. She hadn't expected that invitation either, but then, she didn't know all of the history. The redhead could only nod, turning to face Orihime with concern in her eyes.

"Here, let me give you a hand, Ururu-san," she said, moving to the girl's other side. "That was really amazing," she whispered. "Ururu-san told me a little about how your powers work. It kind of reminds me of before."

She gulped a little, then continued. "This is going to sound silly, but I was able to use what we called psychs. Only they got channeled through a doll I made. I - I kind of thought your hairpins work a little like Mr. Mew."

She knew she wasn't as strong a fighter as Neku, and couldn't heal people like she had just seen, but she wanted to be able to step up and help her new friends. If there was a chance that by finding - or making another - Mr. Mew she could get a little of her psych back, that would help.

Orihime nodded too, watching Ichimaru slip out. Had she done the wrong thing inviting him like that? She didn't really think it was all for his sake. The way Matsumoto had hugged her - it hurt. She felt a little dazed and tired, and not just from the healing.

"I'm ok. Thank you." She replied, getting up with the two of them supporting her. She didn't give them much of her weight at all; the few minutes at least had given her her strength back. "It's alright, I can walk fine. We should get going."

Shiki's news surprised her. Other than the vizards she hadn't met anyone who could relate to what her power was doing. "Really?" She asked, a bit of hopefulness in her voice. "It doesn't sound silly at all. I don't know myself what they are, but since my hairpins are only limited Mr. Mew should work too! It'll be good if you can get some of your powers back."

She led the girls back out into the hallway. "What do your psychs do, if you don't mind me asking?"

Ururu held on to Orihime until the girl moved away. She knew Orihime said she was all right, but she had said that when she fainted too, so Ururu wasn't sure if Orihime was really okay, or just trying to pretend. She knew she'd have to watch closely, at least for now. Ururu didn't mind that though, especially if it meant she could help.

The little girl followed Orihime into the hallway, though she didn't know where they were supposed to meet the others, or who the others were. And she didn't know how Orihime's hairpins worked, or how Mr. Mew worked either. So for now, Ururu was quiet and watchful, ready to move if something bad showed up, or if Orihime or Shiki stumbled.

Shiki wasn't entirely sure Orihime was okay, but she didn't feel comfortable pressing the point. Instead, she nodded and stepped back, ready to step in again if there was the need. That done, there was the matter of the girl's question. She paused for a minute, twirling a lock of her hair around a finger while she thought about how best to explain psychs, and Mr. Mew, without being confusing. "Um...okay. First things first, I guess I should tell you a little about the..."

She trailed off, biting her lip thoughtfully. It wasn't really a place - well, Shibuya was a place, of course, but the UG and RG weren't really places. They were more like things than that. She couldn't easily explain it, though. "Er, right. Before I woke up here, I was part of what's called the Reapers' Game. It's complicated to explain all the details, but it's kind of like a test. You get one week, and there are missions and things.

Anyway. In the Game, there are monsters called Noise. You use what we call 'psychs' to fight them. A psych can be just about anything, really. It can be fire, or ice, or lightning. It can be an energy burst, or a slashing-type thing. Most players use pins to be able to do psychs."

She looked down at the floor for just a moment. "But there are some players that can't use the pins. I tried, I really did, but nothing worked, until - out of desperation! - I tried Mr. Mew. I don't know why he worked when the pins didn't, but he can attack things."

Shiki was glad that the dim light hid the blush on her cheeks. It was one thing to explain this to Neku, but an entirely different thing explaining it all now.

"It sounds like a really cool game. You must be pretty strong to participate in something like that." Orhime was in awe. Learning about other worlds was always interesting, and Shiki's world sounded sort of similar to her own. Except Shiki's world had some kind of game with pins and Noise and probably some really awesome background music.

"My hair pins worked sort of like that the first time too. They're not really special to anyone except me, and I don't have a sword or spiritual powers like the rest of my friends. They just worked when I was desperate. I guess we're both like that." She wondered if Mr. Mew scolded Shiki when she overdid it too. "I still suck at attacking things though."

She realized she'd never really asked Ururu how her own powers worked. Urahara had probably trained her, but they certainly weren't the same as the shinigami's power either. "Was it like that with you too, Ururu-chan?"
