Day 24: Recreational Field

The second thing Riku noticed was that this Landels had the smell of a room that'd been drenched in bleach. Possibly one that had marinated in it for a longer period than it should have. Still, what it smelled like (aside from darkness) wasn't important in this instance, it was the facade the building had taken. A fairly solid one, in the way of Mental Institutions. .. Not that Riku visited them often, but if he had, he imagined this to be the approximate appearance they'd hold.

Along these lines, at least. Perhaps more elaborate, add more curtains variation so as to not drive patients insane.

.. Because that's what really mattered when you were being called 'Billy Zane' and being told your life was a lie. Interior design. No; sometimes Riku had to wonder if living with Maleficent had done irreversible damage to his brain. His hair might be part of that, that he could cut though.

When he came out to the field and realized that he couldn't stand around and look pretty was expected to do more than stand still, he just stared at his nurse. She, being the strange woman that she was, stared back. This caused a staring contest that lasted for two minutes before she tossed a ball at his head.

He caught it, but it forced him to blink. Thankfully this wasn't a real contest, otherwise Riku's manly pride would be at stake. Only not, seeing how she cheated with that cheap shot.

Not that it mattered, he had a feeling that once the other patients started arriving, he'd obtain his few answers.

And there the blood was, plain as day - a small section of the bright red runes on Nel's skin shining with her own lifeblood.

That was when she realized it hurt a little bit. Not sharp, not like she'd just been stabbed, but rough and wide, like a scrape. In her surprise, the little fireball disappeared, and her fingers raised up to her shoulder, gathering some of it off.

The magic hadn't been strong; the blood was coagulating unnaturally quickly, but there some of it was, fresh on her finger. She stared at it. "This isn't normal," Nel commented. "That's the rune that signifies 'firebolt' - it hasn't bled since its inscription."

She, too, contemplated licking it off her fingers, but thought better of it.

The goddess was further baffled by this turn of events, and again she was reminded of her ignorance about the many other worlds.

She noticed the blood clotting, the wound healing with supernatural quickness. To her mind, this screamed 'demon'. But to her heart... Nel couldn't possibly be one. Amaterasu trusted her heart over her head; therefore, this had to be something that she didn't yet know.

"...is it because you used too much magic? But that's the opposite of what happens to me." Her black eyes were wide as she gazed upon the wound, still holding Nel's arm in case something didn't go right. If she was going to heal, then Ammy didn't need to worry... but if she wasn't...

Nel was also rather surprised that the wound had coagulated as fast as it did. Yes, this place was wrong in as many ways as she could imagine.. unnatural wounds caused by such innocuous and holy things as runology, unnatural healing, monsters inside an institution (she was no stranger to such, but monsters with which she was familiar were generally confined to untamed places such as ruins)... and goddesses without their home suns.

"It shouldn't happen at all," Nel said, pulling her shirt gently back down over the runes, though Amaterasu was still holding her arm.. "The wound should heal - it's not deep, it doesn't hurt very much. Thank you for worrying, goddess."

"Why - what happens when you use too much magic..? When I push myself and use all the magic I can, I normally faint.. but I've never bled from it."

Amaterasu was reluctant to release her hold, but in the end, she knew that humanity was always greatest when it could stand on its own two legs.

So she relinquished her hold on Nel's arm, relieved that the wound was neither deep nor threatening. When that question was asked, therefore, it was a simple enough matter for Amaterasu to answer. She knew a little more about Nel's own situation, was it not fair to reveal more of herself? "When I'm too drained, the markings disappear and I can't use my powers. Normally that's it, but the night before last I fainted when I did too much... I wonder why the rules changed here."
