DAY 23: BREAKFAST

That hadn't felt like an entire night.

And his goddamn head hurt. Pounded, even. Enough that he wondered if he was going to end up playing another round of "Christen the nurse" this morning.

Maybe it was because he'd spent so much time and energy trying to find Nowe. That could be the reason behind both those problems. Just the thought of it made his stomach turn, made him want to fucking choke something.

Still, there was shit to do. He forced himself out of bed to put away his pens and the other leftovers from the adventures that didn't happen last night. He'd have to try to talk to Sora today, to see if they could just do tonight what they were going to do last night... and to see if the kid was doing alright.

...he just wished his head would stop hurting. That was probably the result of just how badly he'd overreached himself the previous morning.

The nurse that showed up to get him was cheerful. He grunted at her, listening to her with only half an ear until she mentioned all the excitement, about someone pretending to be a patient, all that crap that Landel had mentioned.

Renji gave her a narrow-eyed look. "Dr. Landel is a goddamn lying coward, and he's lying about that, too," he said. Whether it was true or not, there was only so much good cheer he could take on a shitty morning. "I hope he chokes on a cock." No matter how much venom he put in that statement, it wasn't enough.

Then he had to listen to a lecture about language and gratitude for the rest of the walk to the cafeteria, so maybe it wasn't worth it after all. She dragged him through the breakfast line, and he ended up with granola and toast and tea and a cinnamon roll, because not even a shitty fucking night could ruin his sweet tooth. Though that thing was looking a little too sweet.

The cafeteria was pretty much empty; he had his run of the place. He sat himself about as far from the doors as he could get, and proceeded to stare at his breakfast.

She chuckled quietly at that, leaning back and returning to her original position, carefully patting the top of the shirt against her chest to stop it hanging open as much.

"I'd be very offended if you didn't remember it afterwards," she said, finally pushing the empty tray towards the middle of the table so she could lean one arm on it. "Insulted, even."

At least he could still make her smile, after all the unpleasantness he'd put her through. He let his eyes linger on her face, her smile. She'd always been his one regret. All the times he hadn't held her, hadn't been there... He'd thought he'd pushed himself far enough that he could keep going, no matter the price. The goal had been so close. And now it was like he was being tempted, tried, to see her again like this. She didn't know... she couldn't know just how many times he'd wanted to throw his hands in the air and forget it all, just to share a few selfish moments with her.

He wanted to reach out, let his fingers play with those tempting strands of hair that framed her face. But still he sat, his hands making no attempts on her. Perhaps he'd schooled himself too well. Kept it tucked away for too long. "It'd be a right pity," he teased, "but refreshin' my mem'ry could be just as fun."

He wanted to say more, to give voice to the simple words that would never reach his lips. But in the end, behind his lips is where they remained.

Lingering eyes were something she was used to. Sometimes appreciated, often annoying, like when the Tenth got it's new recruits from the Academy; there were always a couple of students who had to be rather forcefully persuaded that she had gained her position because of her abilities not because of her... ah... assets. You'd think they'd have learned by now, really.

But the same look from Gin definitely fell upon the 'appreciated' side of things. Her smiled softened and she reached out to squeeze his forearm affectionately. It had been a long time since she'd been able to do something like this. And if he wouldn't move, then she damn well would.

"I don't think you need to be drugged the first time to enjoy having your memory refreshed," she said, equally teasing.

She glanced up when the intercom sounded and sighed, noticing the approach of a couple of nurses. Too short a time once again. At least she could bathe now. She could be rather fastidious about her own personal cleanliness.

She stood up as the nurse approached, giving him another smile and trailing her hand over his shoulder as she was lead away. "Till tonight."
