DAY 23: BREAKFAST

That hadn't felt like an entire night.

And his goddamn head hurt. Pounded, even. Enough that he wondered if he was going to end up playing another round of "Christen the nurse" this morning.

Maybe it was because he'd spent so much time and energy trying to find Nowe. That could be the reason behind both those problems. Just the thought of it made his stomach turn, made him want to fucking choke something.

Still, there was shit to do. He forced himself out of bed to put away his pens and the other leftovers from the adventures that didn't happen last night. He'd have to try to talk to Sora today, to see if they could just do tonight what they were going to do last night... and to see if the kid was doing alright.

...he just wished his head would stop hurting. That was probably the result of just how badly he'd overreached himself the previous morning.

The nurse that showed up to get him was cheerful. He grunted at her, listening to her with only half an ear until she mentioned all the excitement, about someone pretending to be a patient, all that crap that Landel had mentioned.

Renji gave her a narrow-eyed look. "Dr. Landel is a goddamn lying coward, and he's lying about that, too," he said. Whether it was true or not, there was only so much good cheer he could take on a shitty morning. "I hope he chokes on a cock." No matter how much venom he put in that statement, it wasn't enough.

Then he had to listen to a lecture about language and gratitude for the rest of the walk to the cafeteria, so maybe it wasn't worth it after all. She dragged him through the breakfast line, and he ended up with granola and toast and tea and a cinnamon roll, because not even a shitty fucking night could ruin his sweet tooth. Though that thing was looking a little too sweet.

The cafeteria was pretty much empty; he had his run of the place. He sat himself about as far from the doors as he could get, and proceeded to stare at his breakfast.

The compassion in Renji's eyes hurt to see. Ed prided himself on needing nothing and no-one. Just Al and himself. That was all he'd needed since mother had died. And seeing that made him feel weak and useless and incredibly childish for feeling that way. He swallowed thickly and nodded, staring down at the table for a moment while he composed himself.

He started when Alfons touched his shoulder and then smiled at him gratefully. "Yeah, sorry," he said quietly.

He licked his lips and then looked back up at Renji. "There's someone here called Envy. He's the one who..." he let the thought trail off, hoping he'd get the right idea. "If you meet him, then run."

He stretched his flesh arm, rolling his shoulder before reaching up to massage the other one where the automail joined. Not being able to move it made it ache, especially trailing like it was. He lifted it carefully, setting it on the table just to take the weight off for a while.

"My room's M28," he said, smiling weakly at the older man. "I need to get my arm fixed first, but if you come there, I can make you a weapon."

Alfons was quiet as he listened to both of them, keeping his hand on Edward's shoulder, and then... then he quietly started massaging there, right on the junction of automail and flesh, in a way that he knew Edward would like. He hadn't gotten to do so for a few months, but he wanted to. He wanted to make Ed feel better.

And as he had no people to warn against or anything further to add to the conversation, he remained quiet for a little while longer.

Ichimaru Gin. Ed nodded and made a mental note of the name, burning it into his memory. It was always good to be warned of people who could be threats before he actually met them. "I'll remember that."

Something in return? He'd never even thought of that and maybe that was his own foolishness. Adel was much better at making deals, he thought. He knew what to ask for, when to ask for things. Ed was used to just doing them.

He bit his lip as he thought and then finally thought of something. "I have a friend. Tamaki," he began, not entirely sur ehow to phrase the request. "You're a fighter, I can tell. Could you... can you teach him? he has no idea how to protect himself." Ed would do it himself, but he'd make a terrible teacher, and the automail made it a little dangerous. Hit even a little too hard, and the other person risked a rather large amoutn of steel meeting their body.

He tenses when Alfons started massaging his shoulder, but relaxed quickly. It felt good to get rid of the knots that had built up. And it was far more effective than doing it himself.

"Please take care," Alfons said, confused by Renji suddenly running off and feeling concern for the other man. But as it was... what more could be said?

But as it was, Alfons was more worried about getting all of those knots out of Edward's body, taking care of the other blond the way he had wanted for so long. And as he felt Ed relax? A blush started creeping up his face, the German failing from keeping a dreamy smile from drifting across his lips. This made him so happy...

Ed stared as Renji rushed off, a little confused by the sudden urgency. But he spotted him heading over to that girl Adel had been talking to earlier and she didn't look particularly well. They must be friends, he guessed.

He shifted slightly uncomfortably, realising that Alfons was still massaging his shoulders and the two of them were alone. It felt good though, he couldn't deny it, although being touched was still weird. Still... he let his eyes drop closed for a moment, letting Alfons do as he wished. And it wasn't as though it would hurt any to get rid of the tenseness.

He had nearly fallen asleep when the intercom crackled into life, the voice of the hated Doctor floating out from it. He sighed and moved to stand, letting the nurse pull him away. He smiled at Alfons. "Thanks. I'll see you tonight." So much to do and so little time.
