DAY 23: BREAKFAST

That hadn't felt like an entire night.

And his goddamn head hurt. Pounded, even. Enough that he wondered if he was going to end up playing another round of "Christen the nurse" this morning.

Maybe it was because he'd spent so much time and energy trying to find Nowe. That could be the reason behind both those problems. Just the thought of it made his stomach turn, made him want to fucking choke something.

Still, there was shit to do. He forced himself out of bed to put away his pens and the other leftovers from the adventures that didn't happen last night. He'd have to try to talk to Sora today, to see if they could just do tonight what they were going to do last night... and to see if the kid was doing alright.

...he just wished his head would stop hurting. That was probably the result of just how badly he'd overreached himself the previous morning.

The nurse that showed up to get him was cheerful. He grunted at her, listening to her with only half an ear until she mentioned all the excitement, about someone pretending to be a patient, all that crap that Landel had mentioned.

Renji gave her a narrow-eyed look. "Dr. Landel is a goddamn lying coward, and he's lying about that, too," he said. Whether it was true or not, there was only so much good cheer he could take on a shitty morning. "I hope he chokes on a cock." No matter how much venom he put in that statement, it wasn't enough.

Then he had to listen to a lecture about language and gratitude for the rest of the walk to the cafeteria, so maybe it wasn't worth it after all. She dragged him through the breakfast line, and he ended up with granola and toast and tea and a cinnamon roll, because not even a shitty fucking night could ruin his sweet tooth. Though that thing was looking a little too sweet.

The cafeteria was pretty much empty; he had his run of the place. He sat himself about as far from the doors as he could get, and proceeded to stare at his breakfast.

Reinforce studied him for a second. Was she being humored? In the end she supposed it didn't matter. While he was willing to listen, she should speak.

"It's hard to know where the differences would lie, unless they are very large. Those known to me have come out of discussions on the supernatural. There is honest talk of demons and impossible powers arising in humans. I even met one who named herself among the Shinto gods last night." She paused as a thought returned to her, the memory of Lyta's messages on the bulletin board... "Ah, the date varies as well. I lived there around the turn of twenty-first century."

Now that she thought about it the formality of his speech suggested an earlier era, though it might just be his own idiosyncrasy.

Different times, perhaps. Different universes - that was asking a bit much, but Javert could tolerate that. But patients running about claiming to be demons and gods? He didn't know whether or not he should be offended. Did he really look that gullible?

He was, at least, willing to believe what she said about the twenty-first century. So Reinforce was from even further in the future than anyone else he'd met so far. He was mildly disturbed to find that the idea was not as mind-boggling as it probably should have been.

"I've learned about the time already," he remarked. "I met a man last night who said he was from the end of the twentieth century; I myself am from the early nineteenth. 1832, to be exact."

"Is that so? I have only a broad knowledge of history. I can't say I know much about the-" She halted in mid-sentence, eyes locking onto a certain white-haired girl standing over the table of two young men, her frame rigid and posture threatening. Raine confronting their attacker from the previous night and his friend... it was volatile enough a situation to begin with, and she knew Raine had been badly affected by the gunman's taunt. "I'm sorry, but I need to see to something." She excused herself, rising from the table stalking off across the room.

[[Heading to Hisoka/Tsuzuki/Raine thread.]]

Javert stared after Reinforce for a moment, head still spinning from - well, everything, really. That had been...sudden.

He shrugged slightly and turned back to his breakfast. He couldn't make sense of much yet, if anything, but he'd figure it out once he learned more about this place. Until then, he was content to wait.

When Mal ended up back in his room far too soon, he couldn't help but get irritated. He had been handling the situation surprisingly well thus far, considering the fact that he couldn't keep a proper hold on his crew and still hadn't even determined if some of them were present. Their plans at meeting had failed, he'd had a cat gnaw on his ankle, and a night had just been wasted.

Not to mention he hadn't seen Zoe in far too long. She usually kept him anchored, made sure he didn't do something ridiculously foolish. Not that she always succeeded, but he wasn't used to her not being around.

The idea that something had happened to her could hardly occur to him. Zoe wouldn't let this place do anything to her.

Suffice to say the captain was irritated when he entered the cafeteria. If this pattern of accomplishing nothing continued, he was going to get really pissed off. His mood didn't improve when he caught sight of his roommate, but he realized that he might as well check in with the man. Since he'd spent a night in this place now, maybe he'd have a different look on things.

Maybe Mal would get to rub a nice "I told you so" in the guy's face.

So, after getting some sausages and toast (sweet stuff wasn't really his thing, that was Kaylee's department), he fell into a seat across from Javert. "And how was your night?" He sound almost amused, but it was obviously feigned.

Kaylee arrived in the cafeteria soon after Mal did, and ran over the familiar back just in time to hear him speak.

"Don't know about the gentleman's, but my night was pretty shiny," she said, grinning and giving her Captain a peck on the cheek. And it had been. Soon after "Jack" had revealed himself, she and Adelheid had parted ways, and she had somehow managed to get back to her room, alone, without incident. She liked to think that "Jack" was watching over her, making sure that nothing happened. The mechanic's romantic side had definitely taken a shine to the man on the radio. After getting back to her room, she'd fallen asleep almost as soon as her head hit the pillow, and hadn't even heard the intercom announcement that had actually named her lover. After all, sex was tiring, and actually learning who she'd had sex with was even more so. Simon definitely had some competition now.

She was so caught up in her fantasizing that she had almost completely forgotten about the man sitting across from Mal. "Oh! Where're my manners?" Kaylee gave the Inspector a disarming smile and held out her hand for him to shake. "'Name's Kaylee."

Javert resisted the urge to smirk as Reynolds showed up. "Somewhat boring, really," he replied. "I haven't yet encountered any creatures from other dimensions, if that's what you mean."

Granted, he'd met at least one person from another dimension, or one who'd at least claimed to be, but surely Mlle. Reinforce had been joking, right? She hadn't seemed delusional. She was from the future - given the technology in this place, Javert had been forced to accept the reality of that - but from another world entirely? Unlikely.

He sighed inwardly as a young lady, apparently on rather close terms with Reynolds, showed up. He didn't think he'd had actual conversations with this many people over so short a period of time in years.

Women shaking hands was an entirely new concept to him, but he hid his surprise well and shook Kaylee's firmly. "Javert," he said briefly, almost letting the "Inspector First Class" slip but cutting it off before it did.

[identity profile] still-free.livejournal.com 2007-04-05 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"Same here. I don't see boring as a good thing here, though." Mal sighed, glancing around at the crowd of patients spread throughout the cafeteria. River was present, but he had almost gotten to the point where he didn't think he had to worry about her, and then...

Somehow, Inara caught his eye. Considering the last "conversation" they had, the split second of eye contact was more than a little awkward. He looked away.

"I don't know about you, but I want out of here. Only time to do that is night. But don't worry, you'll run into something soon." The captain started to pick at his food, but before he could even take a bite Kaylee showed up.

"Shiny, huh?" That actually didn't sound sarcastic. Leave it to his mechanic to see the bright side of every situation. "How's this place been treatin' you?" It wasn't like Kaylee was fit for the fighting... This place had creatures worse than Reavers, but she seemed to be maintaining her sunny disposition. That was good, since he was hardly any good at cheering people up.

[identity profile] just-shiny.livejournal.com 2007-04-06 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
"Very shiny," Kaylee assured her Captain with a toothy grin. She felt amazing. De-stressed and relaxed and TOTALLY at peace with the world, even if that world was a demonic mental hospital. But hadn't Jack said that he was going to work to get them out?

Javert got a very similar smile, though it was a little less painfully bright and sunny. They'd only just met, after all. "It's a pleasure, Mr. Javert." Okay, so she'd butchered his name. She was cheerful and genuine enough that she could get away with it.

[identity profile] unmocked-lawr.livejournal.com 2007-04-06 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Javert raised an eyebrow. "You're not the only one who's been speaking about strange creatures at night. Frankly, I'll believe all of you when I see them for myself." He looked thoughtful for a moment. "If the conditions at night are so horrid, why doesn't the staff do anything about it? Surely patients shouldn't be allowed to roam the halls at night?"

Really, if there were creatures in the halls, it was no surprise that Reynolds wanted out.

"Likewise, mademoiselle." The side of his mouth twitched slightly. He wondered briefly how Kaylee managed to be so cheerful in the morning, but found it vaguely amusing rather than irritating. "I assume you know Mons - ah, Reynolds here, then?"

[identity profile] still-free.livejournal.com 2007-04-07 10:20 am (UTC)(link)
"You'll see 'em. Don't worry about that." To be honest, Mal couldn't wait for that moment. Being something of a skeptic himself, he knew how it felt to fall flat on your face in such a situation. He'd like to see it happen to someone else for once.

There had been a time when he'd been unsure if the Reavers were actually real, even. Though now he knew more about them than he'd ever wanted to.

"The nurses probably don't even know it's going on. It's the people in charge of this place - like the guy on the intercom - who have orchestrated this whole shindig. It's supposed to be that way at night. They probably watch us running for our lives and laugh," he explained bitterly. He did not appreciate being some lab rat, some toy.
