Night 47: West Wing, South Hall 1-B

( from here. )

So far, so good. Kairi tried to move as quietly as she could, not wanting to attract any kind of baddies that could be lurking in the shadows. ... And lest she forget actually crazy patients. Then again, she doubted she'd ever forget that incident.

Oh well, she was almost there. No time to think about past injuries.

All quiet. A quick pan of the flashlight revealed no threats and it seemed not many got attacked this close to the patient rooms, but Hime was nonetheless cautious, keeping an ear out for anything suspicious. That didn't stop her from continuing her confident step down the hall in the slightest though.

This hallway, if Erika remembered correctly would take her to the recreational field if she went north and down towards the junction that led to the Sun Room if she went south. Of course she paid attention when her nurse told her. The area did look quite different during the night. Decayed was the word she was looking for, and this state of decay was not something that could happen in such a short timeframe, nor did this decay reach the patient rooms.

"I see. An unsettling illusion; perhaps Landel-san is fond of psychological warfare," Erika mumbled to herself. She reached out to touch a wall, grimacing a little when her fingers returned some dust and wiped it on her pillowcase. It wouldn't do to ruin her precious dress, after all.

The recreational field was a poor choice because of the poor lighting available to Erika, so for the moment, she decided to go south instead. Perhaps she would find something more interesting there - she did recall seeing a set of staircases, and then Sun Room's structure hinted that there could be a second floor.

Another empty hallway. At least his luck was holding constant so far. Of course, Raph was far too used to that messing up at the worst possible moment, so he wasn't holding out on things staying this easy. Nah, he was betting something would come along soon enough and try messing with him.

...or maybe hoping it did. This training night thing was all well and good, but Raphael had to admit that beyond that well. What good was it really going to do? Sure he might meet a few people who had good ideas about getting out of this place too, and maybe even ones that they could use in the next few nights or something. But he couldn't shake how Pinky had been talking like it was going to take a lot longer than that.

Weeks maybe. Or months. Or worse yet, even longer.

That idea ate at him, and Raphael wasn't paying as much attention to his surroundings as he slipped out into the main hallway.

There was a certain feeling that Mihai had heard about, usually contained to the pit of the stomach. Those who spoke of it attributed that sense to years of work in whatever profession they'd worked, though the element of danger remained common to all choices. They called it a sixth sense, an instinctive alert to danger just beyond the horizon or around the corner. More than one man claimed to have had his life saved by this feeling.

Mihai had never been so fortunate as to have this sense. Or a sense of direction, as many would testify. Either would have been nice a few moments ago, when he stared at a wall that he felt shouldn't have been there. He hadn't turned around, however, instead taking the only other turn available: another right. Now he found himself in a hall not so unlike the one he'd come from two turns back, or maybe three. In either case, he didn't think this was the right way to the kitchen anymore. Maybe. That nurse had been distracting when she was leading him around, with the endless talking.

It worked for an excuse, at least.

He left the male block quickly and headed out into the Institute proper. He didn't have a particular aim in mind, but he did think that heading upstairs would be a good bet. It had been implied that there would be more things which could be used as weaponry. He'd take a crudely carved club at this point, hell, a butter knife would be better than nothing.

Maybe.

Alright, he wanted something better than a butter knife.

There had been an influx of new patients today apparently and as he approached the bearded man in the corridor, noting the slightly bemused expression on his face. It was easy enough to get lost in and there was always the chance that he might just have woken up as Ronixis had on his first night.

"Are you looking for somewhere in particular?" he asked genially, slowing down as he approached.

So far, so good, Bella told herself as she ran, trying to run as quietly as she could on her toes. She didn't want to attract any monsters and whatnot that were hiding in the shadows - especially because she had no weapon. She'd have to get one some time ... maybe tomorrow night. Surely Edward would disapprove, but it would be for the best.

But there was no time to think about tomorrow. She had to focus on now. She continued to run down the hallway, making sure not to bump into anyone this time around.

Whoever had been walking down this hallway a moment had turned a corner and dipped out of site. Lana quickened her pace and headed in the same direction, cautiously approaching a larger arch.

The larger hallway was not empty. Groups of people, all holding flashlights, and speaking quietly. And -- was that a sword?

No one seemed alarmed, or even surprised at their surroundings. Curious. That increased the likelihood of some sort of kidnapping attempt -- but who could conceal this and fail to lock a door? True, there was no such thing as a perfect crime; if there were, she'd be out of a job. Everyone missed something; it was part of the human condition. But leaving a kidnap victim untied, in an unlocked room, with supplies and no threats seemed unusual even for the most deranged criminal mind.

Utena had bolted right through the F-A block and swerved around the corner to the right, heading for the main hallway. She tried to keep herself from really panicking more than she already was. Maybe Himemiya had left right when the doors opened and gone to meet her upstairs. She could still be fine. This didn't have to be an emergency. "She would have to be running pretty fast to stay ahead of me, though," Utena said to herself with dread in her voice.

The alternative was that she had been taken from her room before dinner. For what, she didn't know. Experiments. Special Counseling. Something new and unusual she hadn't heard about yet. Maybe the staff were getting ready to brainwash her a second time right this moment, and they just hadn't gone to fetch the girl's things from her room yet.

"Himemiya! Can you hear me?!" she called out, hoping even harder that the girl had just gotten ahead of her somehow.

No answer.

Utena ran faster.

Things were still quiet. That was a very good thing, and Hanyuu walked as quietly and as quickly as she could, not wanting to draw any unwanted attention to herself. As always, she found herself getting more and more nervous the farther she moved from her room, but she tried not to let it get to her. There was only a short ways to go, and then she wouldn't have to worry about being by herself anymore.

Even though Ema had just been this way a few hours earlier, the larger hallway seemed much different at night. The lack of light made it appear much, much eerier.

Ema turned to her companion. "If we head that way," she indicated north, "we'll just end up back at the Recreation Field again, right?" That was the way the nurse had lead her, anyway. "So we should try the other direction."

How many halls did one place need to have? Honestly...Beatrice thought that there really wasn't much of an excuse for shoddy construction such as this. At least the halls were wider now, though, and easier to follow. She moved along carefully, remembering the route she had taken earlier.

"You fight with a sword, right?" Anise asked as the two of them reached the next hallway. It was the obvious guess, seeing as that was the weapon Momo was carrying. "I specialize in long-distance attacks, so if we get in trouble, I can back you up," she went on to explain.

Her fonic artes still didn't work that well, but they weren't completely useless. It was probably fair that Momo knew what Anise would be able to do if they did end up getting attacked.

[identity profile] hajike-tobiume.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
It was because of the threat of a fight that Momo chose to tell Anise. She didn't want the girl to be left in the proverbial dark over something that important should a fight break out.

"Yes, I am skilled in kenjutsu," Momo replied. Seeing as the shinigami didn't see any ranged weaponry on Anise, she wasn't sure what to think of the 'long-distance' attacks the girl was referring to. Did she possess something like kidou? "But my talent lays in what I call kidou - the demon arts. Most humans find it easier to think of as magic, though." She smiled. "It doesn't work very well here, but well enough."

Ah, this hallway. Yuna pulled her thoughts completely away from years-old events as she carefully traversed this hallway, shining the light all around. No monster...but then, that was what she'd had thought right before a monster had leapt out at her.

This would be easier with a light that was less directional.... Yuna brought the light to her face, but quickly shone it back outwards when the beam just went up to the ceiling.

Maybe it would be better to just concentrate on where she was going.

"There's a very good chance that we'll be meeting a special counseling patient in there; remember when you first came in and this one had a broken arm before Yuffie-dono fixed it? Well, that's the reason why. This one had his arm broken by a special counseling patient." He neglected to say that it was Yuffie herself who had done the breaking. There was no handle to jiggle as Ranulf passed through the wide-open double doors in this passage, still keeping a hand to the wall so as not to lose his balance again. What kind of prison was this? "Daein must be really lacking in the security department!" he thought to himself, chuckling in his head. Yet... the more he saw of this place, the more he thought of it as some kind of infirmary.

As he looked around he realized he didn't need the torch at all. When he'd awoken he'd been in hysterics, which he realized was probably the reason for his hallucination of night blindness. The laguz were well known for their night vision, which was why he knew exactly which spots to avoid as he made his way silently down the hallway. Almost to the end of it, he decided to rest his knee for a moment. Stopping outside another closed door, he attempted to massage it with his fingers, hoping to numb the dull ache.

If Asuka had any question about Junpei being able to step up to the plate when something wicked came to chomp on them, the way Junpei immediately started to look around for monsters in the hallway, the slightest tensing in his muscles with the anticipation of a fight, should be answer enough. This place was a lot like the first block of Tartarus, only instead of being a freaky blood-covered warped version of Gekkoukan High, it was a freaky blood-covered (if only in his mind - he wasn't going to forget the bleeding walls night) warped version of the insane aylum. Oh, excuse him - a freaky, blood-covered warped version of everyone's favorite Barney sing-a-long show.

So far, so good... "You went to the rec field today, right?"

[identity profile] lookitmemama.livejournal.com 2010-02-13 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
She was surprised to see Junpei actively watching the hallway for anything suspicious that could be lurking. Not that it changed her opinion on him much; it took more than survival common sense to warm her up. Regardless, Asuka was not going to be lulled into a false sense of security just because the male of this relationship was taking the lead. Never let a boy do her job, since she was fifty times better at it anyway.

With that in mind, the little redhead swiveled her head back and forth, flashlight at the ready in case she needed to blind someone (again).

"Mmmm no, I kinda wished I had, but I stayed in the sun room after lunch. I was catching up on all the notes on the bulletin board. Do you ever use that thing?"

Though she had no idea what else she could do—she'd only seen a small amount of the place. If she stake out new places during the day, that would be perfect, but she doubted she could do that, what with the nurses. Damn confining prison.

This part of the Institute had gotten pretty familiar in the last couple of nights, and Ruby found herself strolling through the hallways at a rather leisurely pace, taking in the sights. There were so many people here, all running around like rats in a maze.

And she was one of them.

That was the weirdest thing about this place, random black outs and odd hunger aside. She'd gone from being apart from humanity, helping plot its complete annihilation even, to being stuck in a loony bin with hundreds of people and no way out.

There. He'd gotten through it without incident. If that had been the last hall, Lelouch might have taken a moment to relax, but since it wasn't, he merely sighed. Why whoever had designed this place hadn't thought to include a hall in the middle of the patient blocks instead of requiring them to take the long, circuitous route he was on, he had no idea. Then again, they had probably been trying to make it difficult.

The larger hall was crowded already. Was she running late? Taura looked back over her shoulder as she picked up her pace. How could she be running late -- she'd left her room as soon as the doors had opened, and come straight here.

The disorientation was entirely psychological; not at all like the lurch of a wormhole jump, but her reaction was the same. She shook her head and focused her eyes on what was in front of her, ignoring whether or not her stomach had had a chance to catch up.
