Nightshift 45: West Wing, South Hall 1-A

[From here]

Tyki headed through the double doors into the next hallway, still not seeing anything or anyone around this place. The area was still as empty and boring as ever. He'd almost wish for the head doctor to switch around the lay-out of the place a bit, if only it weren't for the fact that figuring out what was where would be a real pain. Especially on the rare occasion he would need to be somewhere, and considering the guy's excellent sense of timing...

Usopp had almost jumped when he heard a loud noise in the halls behind him, but it had just been a patient meeting another after he glanced over. That didn't stop him from hurrying out into the larger hall, the one he recognized as the way to and from the Sun Room. But that direction didn't have any hallways he remembered looking like the rooms' main hall. So... it was still possible they were down, and in some other direction. A map would have been helpful now.

Up seemed the most likely just because there seemed to be another, similar hall there and he hadn't seen any others yet. But it did break the numbering system Usopp thought he'd had worked out. If he was wrong, at least all he had to do is double back. And he hadn't seen anything horrible that wanted to eat him yet, that was a plus too. Tightening the coat around himself, decision made, he headed up to check the next hallway.

Was it colder at night, or was that just an illusion because of the darkness? And where were all the nurses, anyway?

Chekov turned the corner and situated himself in front of the door. When Commander Spock opened the door, theoretically Chekov would be standing there at attention. After his slip-up (otherwise known as using the F-word around Spock: feelings), he wanted to appear to be in 'top form' as Spock had instructed.

Even if Captain Kirk would return to his normal self--he hoped. The idea of proceeding with the mission of escape as Commander Spock's First Officer was one Chekov didn't want to consider. Even if Chekov had no idea what to do about Captain Kirk, no doubt his Vulcan Commander would know. Chekov could plot a course to anywhere, but when it came to people's brains he was like a new cadet in the engine room.

As soon as he stepped into the next hallway, Spock was greeted with the sight of Chekov standing straight and alert. It was good that he had apparently made it without any trouble, though the Vulcan hadn't anticipated on him running into any obstacles. After all, he'd made the same journey himself the other night with no problems. Of course, it was also true that the institute was notorious for throwing unexpected hurdles in one's way, in which case Spock had trusted Chekov to know how to steer himself out of danger.

The fact he was still wearing the Landel's issue uniform did not go unnoticed by Spock, but he chose not to verbally point out the differences between their clothing. That was fairly obvious, and had little bearing over their mission tonight.

After giving a small nod in greeting, Spock lowered his flashlight and approached the ensign. "The Captain's quarters is in room M66," Spock said, wasting no time on pleasantries. "Unless you have new information that you believe may be relevant to the his condition, I suggest we start on our way."

As Claude made his way down the hall, he noticed there were already a few patients roaming about. No doubt they had their own places to be, and their own comrades to meet. He remembered all of the times he'd passed through this hallway with Dias and Guy, and his heart ached to know that he'd never get a chance to walk with either of them again. Not for the first time, Claude thought of Anise, and how difficult it had to be for her to lose one of her few Auldrantian friends.

Thinking of her made him remind himself that he didn't want to keep her waiting. They'd agreed to stick together, and so Claude was confident they could get through this as long as they were around to help each other.

His flashlight beam illuminated the hallway up ahead. Thankfully, the coast was clear of monsters, but Claude knew he couldn't push his luck. He hurried on.

Mello pushed the door open, and checked their progress against his mental map of the place. He hoped to hell he wouldn't need such a thing after tonight. He was aiming for the outdoors, and jerked his chin in the direction of the north hallway before looking back at Emmett in silent question. His night vision wasn't what it had been before the explosion, and it would be a relief to get out of the building.

[identity profile] rides-on-top.livejournal.com 2009-11-22 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Emmett looked to the north where Morgan had motioned and nodded. The doorway was open, leading into what looked to be a similar hallway with a closed pair of doors at the end. He took a deep breath, the scent of open air from that direction was so faint that he wasn't sure if it was his imagination. Annoyed, and slightly perturbed by the failure of his usually sharp senses, Emmett quietly continued down the hallway.

Okay, another hallway down. No problems. Max hadn't run into anything dangerous or scary, aside from his constant hallucinations (phrasing it like that made it sound really bad, come to think of it) and he seemed to be doing okay. Pretty impressive considering he hadn't ventured out by himself without getting hurt in some way for a while! He'd have to tell Dex about this when he had the chance.

His efforts to calm his nerves were mostly fruitless. He still felt nervous and afraid and lost, and all too eager for someone to latch on to and follow like a lost puppy. Max kept going.

No monsters here, but then again they tended to stay away from the living quarters. Abe found this interesting. If he'd have been a horrible monster he'd have gone to where the concentration of humans was highest. Instead, they seemed to be more common in the furthest reaches of the asylum. Almost as if they were there more to discourage exploration rather than just hunt.

This hallway was empty, too. Well, except for a boy standing straight as a stick in front of the door. Seemed like a lot of people's doors weren't working tonight, strangely enough. Sean frowned to himself, still navigating through the darkness.

"Don't worry Chris," Sean smiled back at him--though if Chris could see it or not, he didn't know. He hoped the feeling was there. "We probably won't get in trouble. I mean, if we were wandering around instead of trying to find someone, then we'd probably get in big trouble. But we're not!" he finished cheerfully.

"Ah, here we go," Sean looked up at the door. He could barely read the writing on the door--that smell though was getting unbearable. And it looked like the walls were covered in something, though he couldn't be sure. It was pretty dark.

"This'll be fixed up in no time." Sean raised his hand to knock on the door of the Nurse's Station.

"You've both really lost your minds, haven't you?" Schuldig's voice cracked through the hall like a whip.

The telepath had moved fast - in fact, he'd gotten within visual distance by the end of the first hallway, although since the boys hadn't noticed him(and since he had some inkling of how they'd react when they did), he'd opted to simply trail them from a distance. He'd hoped that they'd get fed up or nervous or scared on their own and turn back, and he wouldn't have to call attention to himself at all.

But apparently they had a death wish; Artemis, in his normal frame of mind, knew damned well what the nurses were capable of, and yet here the boy was practically looking to call some out. Schuldig didn't actually know for a fact if they lurked in the nurses' station, but really, where better? It was like watching a child preparing to innocently prod a nest of vipers with a red-hot poker(which, if it had been any other idiot child, he probably would have considered funny, or at least natural selection in the works).

"Take it from me," he said, a hand on his hip - largely so he could hide the bulk of the hatchet behind his back, because he didn't have to be Crawford to see how this encounter would go if they caught sight of it, "but there's nothing and no one in there that you want to see right now. Head on back to your room, before something a lot worse than me happens to you."

It was quiet still, this early in the night. There were only a few wandering this hall at the moment, and no sounds of distress or fighting. Even so there was still no reason to drop his guard, so Yue remained entirely wary as he made his way down the hall, peripherally aware of the two following along behind.

Although he'd momentarily hoped, Yue could sense that none of his powers had returned along with his wings. It was quite strange to have them and still have to walk, but without his control over air there was really no other choice. Even if he were to go outside and attempt to fly he likely wouldn't be able to; it was the magic that allowed him to defy physics, and without that he was almost entirely human. An unpleasant thought.

Discussion was minimal as they followed Yue down the hallway back toward the girl's block. It would've been easy to pick up Sakura on the way to the other room, but apparently Yue wasn't taking any chances. Not that he planned on complaining to the guardian. Yuuhi was perfectly fine with just following along.

Ordinarily on leaving the room block, Kvothe would have turned right toward the large main hallway running through the Institute. He'd rarely gone further up into the patient rooms, when he turned left he proceeded with more caution than normal, even though he knew that it was unlikely to be any more dangerous there than it was near his own room. For a moment his caution seemed justified, the moment he turned he thought he saw a tall pale figure in black stepping towards him but when he raised his light, it was gone. He paused for a moment to breathe and remind himself that this at least was all in his mind. Maybe it was his discussion with Zex earlier that made it seem more real.

The hallway was mostly empty, save a few figures in the distance. Addison paid them far less attention than the boy who was with him. He kept sparing Sean quick glances, making sure that he was still nearby. There was still that lingering threat that Sean's presence was impermanent. That this time spent should not have existed. Addison was somewhat exasperated with himself; those were lingering feelings from his delusions. Him being alive was not dangerous to Sean. He was human.

"Would you be happier if I called you Shinji?" Addison asked suddenly. He wanted to hear what Sean had to say, but he also didn't want to speak about his strange words from earlier. If forced to explain himself, there was no telling what he might say.

Shinji was still nervous, even as they moved into another corridor. He still felt like he was being watched, weighed, judged, and examined by someone. The dimly lit corridors did nothing to relieve him of that feeling (although staying close to Kaworu certainly helped him control the feeling of panic). He glanced over at Kaworu every so often, trying not to be obvious. He still wasn't what was truly real about himself. The question, however, startled him when it came.

"A-ah...! Um... I... I guess so. Whatever you want to call me is fine... Shinji works," he stammered out, trying not to come down too heavily on one side or the other.

No monsters. No spiders. No Spider-man. What are you, Joshua, three and scared of the monster in the closet?

He forced himself to walk more assertively. The only thing to fear was one of the other patients getting out and deciding to spread havoc while the power was out, and most of those he could take down easy. No problem at all. Especially not with how bizarrely spot on his hallucinations had been. Maybe they unlocked everyone's doors at night and the place was just wildly irresponsible.

Really, that actually made more sense. His hallucinations had never been that vivid and visceral, maybe he'd just added on to what he was already seeing. That made him feel slightly less insane, albeit slightly more likely to give Landel an earful for letting the crazies roam around unleashed once he actually found the guy.

For a second after they'd emerged into the hallway Hanatarou thought he could hear voices nearby, but apparently whoever it was had been moving on already. He paused a moment to glance around, his heart pounding (as it always did whenever he was wandering around at night), but finally decided it was safe as it ever was and started walking again.

He really wasn't so sure about this wandering around at night thing, now that he was actually doing it and wasn't bolstered by unfounded heroism.

Glad to hear that they didn't have far to travel, Matt nodded to his roommate. He still could barely believe he was actually out here at night. Granted, the institute looked the same as always, just with the lights out...

"Thanks again for taking me along," he muttered, doing his best to keep his voice down. He wasn't quite sure why, though he justified it as not disturbing the other people around.

Figuring out where the hell Rick could've gone wasn't all that easy when the only thing he'd gotten from his brother was that Rick was going to take a look around. Matthew almost wished he'd just let Rick leave from the beginning since at least then he'd know that Rick would be going outside. As it was, he could've taken off anywhere from down the hall to up the stairs.

Plus, all these patients moving about was...unsettling. Especially since it seemed as if they were just. Walking. Like nothing unusual had occurred by the unlocking of the doors or the lack of staff.

Better that than chaos, though, he supposed.

Matthew hesitated, lingering. Maybe he should just head back. What if Rick came back to find him and he wasn't there?

It would have been best if the patient had headed back, but he wasn't able to make up his mind fast enough. It seemed like the monsters were in full force tonight despite the fact that some of the patients had supposedly "recovered."

This cat was not in the mood to stalk and pounce. No, its claws scraped against the hospital floor as it barreled its way down the hall, fangs dripping as it ran for the sake of hunger.

Almost as if it could sense that this patient was not in any way prepared for an attack, it homed in on him, racing as fast as its rotted (yet muscular) legs could take it.
