Nightshift 45: West Wing, South Hall 1-A

[From here]

Tyki headed through the double doors into the next hallway, still not seeing anything or anyone around this place. The area was still as empty and boring as ever. He'd almost wish for the head doctor to switch around the lay-out of the place a bit, if only it weren't for the fact that figuring out what was where would be a real pain. Especially on the rare occasion he would need to be somewhere, and considering the guy's excellent sense of timing...

The hallway was mostly empty, save a few figures in the distance. Addison paid them far less attention than the boy who was with him. He kept sparing Sean quick glances, making sure that he was still nearby. There was still that lingering threat that Sean's presence was impermanent. That this time spent should not have existed. Addison was somewhat exasperated with himself; those were lingering feelings from his delusions. Him being alive was not dangerous to Sean. He was human.

"Would you be happier if I called you Shinji?" Addison asked suddenly. He wanted to hear what Sean had to say, but he also didn't want to speak about his strange words from earlier. If forced to explain himself, there was no telling what he might say.

Shinji was still nervous, even as they moved into another corridor. He still felt like he was being watched, weighed, judged, and examined by someone. The dimly lit corridors did nothing to relieve him of that feeling (although staying close to Kaworu certainly helped him control the feeling of panic). He glanced over at Kaworu every so often, trying not to be obvious. He still wasn't what was truly real about himself. The question, however, startled him when it came.

"A-ah...! Um... I... I guess so. Whatever you want to call me is fine... Shinji works," he stammered out, trying not to come down too heavily on one side or the other.

"I can use Shinji," he agreed, looking over at the other boy curiously. Sean didn't appear any different when he was being himself versus Shinji. Thin, dark hair, dark eyes. He made all of the same movements, his voice came out as restrained as ever, ready to retract any poorly placed statement he might make. He was anxious, over analyzing every move he made in some attempt to avoid conflict. Even with Addison, who truly couldn't imagine being angry with Sean. Frustrated, perhaps, but that was a new sensation. He only wanted Sean to trust him.

"Is that what you call yourself right now?" he continued with his questions. It was a likely assumption, since Sean hadn't stopped calling him Kaworu. Addison didn't mind it much, though it did bring back some images that he knew weren't real. Fortunately, the ones that he liked the most were.

"Th-that's fine. Really. I like Shinji," he replied earnestly, eying Kaworu with more of his nervous energy. His comfort level still wasn't very high and even around Kaworu he was afraid of saying or doing the wrong thing. Especially because Kaworu acted different; he wasn't quite as self-assured or calm or smooth as he remembered. There was something slightly different about him; slightly wrong. Obviously, the whole Addison thing, but his mannerisms were changed around slightly. Just different enough to set off alarm bells in Shinji's head.

"...yes. Of course it's what I call myself. I mean... I don't have another name," he replied and then hastily added, "That I remember, anyway."

He flexed his fingers again, glancing up and down the hallway, "So... what now?"

Addison stopped and took a moment to think. He directed his flashlight up and down the hallway, and eventually settled on a direction at random. One way was very much like the next, and Addison had no clear goals in mind.

"This way," he announced, and then added, "Shinji." He smiled over at Sean as they walked into the next, larger hallway.
