Nightshift 45: West Wing, South Hall 1-A

[From here]

Tyki headed through the double doors into the next hallway, still not seeing anything or anyone around this place. The area was still as empty and boring as ever. He'd almost wish for the head doctor to switch around the lay-out of the place a bit, if only it weren't for the fact that figuring out what was where would be a real pain. Especially on the rare occasion he would need to be somewhere, and considering the guy's excellent sense of timing...

"You've both really lost your minds, haven't you?" Schuldig's voice cracked through the hall like a whip.

The telepath had moved fast - in fact, he'd gotten within visual distance by the end of the first hallway, although since the boys hadn't noticed him(and since he had some inkling of how they'd react when they did), he'd opted to simply trail them from a distance. He'd hoped that they'd get fed up or nervous or scared on their own and turn back, and he wouldn't have to call attention to himself at all.

But apparently they had a death wish; Artemis, in his normal frame of mind, knew damned well what the nurses were capable of, and yet here the boy was practically looking to call some out. Schuldig didn't actually know for a fact if they lurked in the nurses' station, but really, where better? It was like watching a child preparing to innocently prod a nest of vipers with a red-hot poker(which, if it had been any other idiot child, he probably would have considered funny, or at least natural selection in the works).

"Take it from me," he said, a hand on his hip - largely so he could hide the bulk of the hatchet behind his back, because he didn't have to be Crawford to see how this encounter would go if they caught sight of it, "but there's nothing and no one in there that you want to see right now. Head on back to your room, before something a lot worse than me happens to you."

I'm replying to you now. ^^;;;;;

Chris had turn, falling into a defensive crouch without thinking about it and keeping himself between Sean and the other man.He didn't know what his real name was, but he didn't look like he'd be dangerous. The move had tugged at one of the wounds still hidden by the bandages, though the skin hadn't torn open yet.

He straightened up and carefully stepped aside. He liked the idea of going back, very much, and he glanced at Sean, hoping he'd be in the same mindset.

Sean jumped, hand pulling away from the door as he started at Schuldig's voice. If stories about monsters were bad, Schuldig in the flesh was worse. His hand wandered to the bruise on his arm, and it felt like his heart had stopped for a moment.

Chris seemed upset as well, and Sean mentally groaned--he hadn't meant for this to happen. Chris wouldn't like being around Schuldig if he got violent, but Sean wasn't about to turn his back on Schuldig and walk back to his room with a faulty lock. What would happen if Schuldig trapped them both in there and tried to force Artemis out of Sean again? What was Schuldig doing out of his room anyway? He'd probably kicked the door down, if Sean knew anything.

'You can't kick a door down that opens inward, bright one.'

Sean steeled himself and narrowed his eyes at Schuldig. "The lock on our room is broken. We're just going to tell somebody, then they'll take us back to our room. You can go back to yours," he said firmly, edging himself between Schuldig and Chris. "We're fine."

"That's not happening." Schuldig began moving down the hall - at a slight angle; Artemis looked ready to bolt already, and if he did run, Schuldig would prefer them to dart around him and back in the direction of their room, rather than any closer to the door of the nurses' station. (Besides, it also helped disguise the fact that he was obviously holding an arm behind his back to hide the hatchet.) Though their being so cooperative as to actually go back to their room was giving them far too much credit. That would actually be Artemis making his life simpler. "I'll tell them, if you like, but you just came from your room unescorted, didn't you? You can walk back by yourselves and lock yourselves in however you like until morning - I won't even follow you, if you don't want me to - but you're not touching that door." Grinning, he added, "Besides, shouldn't good patients be staying in their rooms, lock or no lock? Hurry back, before you get in trouble."

"We should just go back," Chris said softly, reaching out to tug on Sean's sleeve gently. "Things will be better in the morning."

He did not want to be here with a man that grinned and was clearly hiding something from them. What, he couldn't say, but it made him uneasy and nervous.

No, they shouldn't go back. Because even if Schuldig said that he wouldn't follow them, Sean knew deep down that he was lying. He'd do anything to get Artemis back, he could feel it--he wasn't going to trot back to his unguarded room. Especially not with Schuldig circling them like a grinning hyena. He continued to shift as Schuldig moved, protecting Chris from whatever Schuldig had working in his mind.

"I guess that's why you're not in your room," Sean said, backing away from the Nurse Station door. What choice did he have? Schuldig was bearing down on them.

...they did have an escape route, though.

"Run Chris," Sean said quickly, grabbing his friend's hand and yanking him into the adjacent hallway. They just had to run until someone found them running and stopped Schuldig.

'Wrong way, imbecile!' Sean charged into the hallway. 'Where do you think you're going?!'

Schuldig swore under his breath. He couldn't actually claim that bolting from him was an illogical response, nor was it unexpected - but it was going to make his life that much more difficult. Which, for Artemis, wasn't really all that unexpected either.

He knew only too well what the likelihood of Arty's getting himself in trouble would be if he let him run off unsupervised - a hair above 100% - which left him with little recourse than to follow. He was taller and faster; he'd corner them soon enough.
