Night 45: Main Hallway, 1-West

[from here]

Once away from the safety of the patient block, Momo slowed down as she traveled along the left hand wall to cover her blind spot. In this position, she could easily draw her sword and deal with issues as they arose. Hopefully, there would be none.

Momo had too much on her mind to want to deal with anything she didn't have to.

Once Tyki reached the main hallway, he paused. He could easily reach the second floor from here, but he didn't quite feel like heading there again. Perhaps the doctor's offices for some cigarettes then? Cheating Boy A obviously wasn't going to get him those seven packages anymore. The basement he had heard about could work as well, he guessed.

As he considered his options, he swept the beam of his flashlight around the place before he noticed someone. His lips twisted into a smirk when he recognized who it was. His interest caught, he casually approached her as if he was approaching an acquaintance rather than an enemy. Well, at least no one could blame him for hiding his presence or anything.

"Fancy running into you here, Miss Shinigami," he greeted, almost politely. He might not intend to fight with his injuries like this, but that didn't mean he couldn't play around a bit. "How's your eye?"

He may have taken command of the bridge before, but that had been a dire situation. The whole time, he'd been scared to death that Nero would try to hail the Enterprise again, and Chekov would cause him to attack the ship again. He'd been ready to accept the responsibility--but he was a navigator, not a Commander or a Captain.

And certainly not a First Officer capable of serving under Commander Spock. Chekov didn't know how Captain Kirk would fare with Commander Spock as his First Officer, but Chekov had a feeling their opinions would sometimes--if not always--come into conflict. Commander Spock had already contracted another person to read the stars and questioned the bad feeling Chekov had gotten in the pit of his stomach when he came back to the board to find his message series gone. Who would want his authorization code? He should have never posted it there--now someone had his authorization code, name, everything.

Well... it was possible that it would do the other party no good at all. After all, he hadn't seen the Enterprise docked outside the building.

He passed by two people having some sort of discussion, but dismissed it for now. If he was going to be Commander Spock's First Officer (and he hoped to God he wouldn't be), being punctual was the first step, he supposed.

Finally! Some people! Aerith was about to hurry over to the two people carrying on a conversation when she caught sight of some doors further down the hall. It would probably be for the best to ask what exactly she'd stumbled into, but her own curiosity was getting the better of her. Maybe she'd just walk a little further down. Just to see if there was anything interesting down the way. She could always come back after she'd checked out what lay ahead, couldn't she?

Claude softly exhaled as he approached the place he, Anise and Celes were all supposed to meet. A quick sweep of his flashlight revealed the stairs up ahead, as well as a few patients who were hanging around. No monsters -- that was a plus, at least.

Still, it looked like he'd managed to get here before either of the girls. Claude wasn't particularly worried, especially since there were a number of things that could slow someone down while trying to leave for the night. But he was also a little anxious to get a move on, especially after some of the disconcerting warnings Okita had given him during lunch.

That was why he gravitated toward the hallway he knew Anise and Celes would be coming from when they came to meet him. Maybe he'd see them coming from out of the F-block, and they could head off toward the stairs without wasting much time. Since he was already waiting, he may as well cut down on the distance Anise and Celes would need to walk, right?

Alright, here was the main hallway. Max had gotten here safely after all! No thanks to his hallucinations, which only seemed to be getting bolder the further he went.

He didn't see anyone nearby that looked particularly open to watching out for him, so Max looked around some more, trying to find someone that would preferably be fairly big and strong. Todd would be nice, wherever he was. Maybe he was still asleep?

Something darted across his flashlight beam and he instinctively tried to follow it. He only caught glimpses of the creature as his light jerked around, something with many limbs and mouths and arms and teeth and tentacles, something unworldly that he'd never seen before that looked all too real. He backed away from it without thinking, and from his other side, his arm suddenly stung.

Max yelped in confusion, then turned to investigate. He touched his arm where it hurt, and his fingers came back with a very thin coating of red. After a bit of awkward maneuvering, he could make out a shallow scratch on his arm that had definitely not been there before.

No, there had to be a reasonable explanation for it. Maybe he'd accidentally scratched himself while checking for the thing before or something... that had to be it. Max bit back a whimper in spite of himself and kept an eye out for anyone who felt inclined to let him tag along with whatever they were doing. He could really use some company about now.

A small lighting oversight had Kristoph practically running into an obstacle as the man rounded the corner. Surprise laced his features as he froze in his steps and gauged the situation; he hadn't expected someone to be standing right there. An arm twitched in its need to raise the plastic bird of prey to attack, but he thankfully remembered himself in time.

Instead, he stepped out of the other's boundaries. "Oh, terribly sorry!" said Kristoph in his best apologetic tone. "Are you all right?"

After heading down the set of relatively narrow hallways, Scar finally reached the main one. He glanced around, even switching on his portable light to make sure there weren't any threats. To his relief, there weren't. But to his surprise, there was also a distinct lack of patients around. Switching his light off again, he stood around for a moment, restlessly.

Not wanting to remain in one location for long, Scar opted to continue heading down the main hallway. Perhaps there were more individuals near the sun room, which always seemed to be so popular during the nights.

He continued on, coat trailing behind him. More and more patients were making their way out from their rooms. The good patients though, they'd stay in, wouldn't they? He didn't want to have to worry about Aiden.

After reaching the main hallway, the ninja positioned himself with his back towards one of the walls, leaning against it's surface as he reached for his map. This position would make it difficult to ambush him from behind, unless some of these creatures had a similar ability to that Gyobu he had defeated on the ship not too long ago. The mere thought of that kill only made Tenzen's features twist into a slight smirk. How pathetic that man had looked, which was only befitting for those of the Kouga.

His black eyes glanced over his map as he decided upon an appropriate location. Though the map was certainly useful, the purpose of some of these areas were up to debate.

Turning the corner into the main hallway, Leonard found more patients out and about. He looked behind him, trying to think what he'd set out to do, but it was useless. It had already faded. He took another look around the hallway, deciding not to turn on the flashlight in his hand. His eyes had already adjusted, and he could see well enough from the lights of the other flashlights where a few people were.

He approached a man near the wall. "What's going on here?"

Aah, this was that big hallway. It was less empty than the previous halls; a pair of people were talking to one another, and there was a man who looked sort of lost and confused, but Dist had a destination in mind and didn't much care to stop and ask about it.

Celes had left her room just after Hinamori, long enough to get a few more bites of food down, and dress herself again. It felt good to have something substantial to do tonight, even if the eventual goal was unpleasant. But that was fine, of all her years of soldiering, unpleasant was the least of her worries.

Still, she didn't see Claude, or that little girl (Anise, he'd said her name was. Anise), and frowned. Well, she hadn't taken that long. Where were they?

When Anise entered the main hallway, she stopped and turned her head from side to side, looking for any sign of Claude. It didn't look like he was around yet.

Anise took a few steps away from the doorway, just so she wouldn't get trampled if anyone came through while she was waiting, but doing so put her right in front of a vaguely familiar-looking woman. The girl looked up at the blonde, squinting in the darkness, and then her eyes lit up in recognition.

"Ah! You're... that lady from last night." What was she doing there? It was like appearing out of nowhere was just her thing, or something. Although, she kinda looked like she was waiting for someone, too. Anise realized there was a chance she was just bothering the woman by approaching her, but at the same time, it would feel weird to just walk right past someone after going through what they did just the night before.

They entered the main hall with minimal fuss; it was easy to follow Yue when he had those huge white wings behind him. On the other hand, it made it difficult to see much of what might be ahead of them, so Yuuhi hung toward the rear, watching their backs. Besides, he didn't want Touya or Yue tripping on the coat. He supposed it was probably a little inconvenient in smaller areas like this, but it'd come in handy before, so he didn't see enough reason to leave it behind.

[Making haste from here.]

It was just after the Scarecrow made it out of the M blocks and into the main hallway and was about to turn to go toward where his map said that the F blocks were that it occurred to him that this plan of "find Mele and tell her to stay put because it's dangerous out here and she may not believe you but better safe than sorry" was not one of his best concoctions.

First of all, he had no idea which room Mele would be in, since he'd never bothered to ask. The map said there were lots of female rooms, and looking through them might take entirely too long. He could have loitered about the hallway that all the female rooms led to in the hopes of catching her before she got very far, but that didn't sound like a good idea either. She was probably long gone already.

He snapped his fingers, silently cursing his clumsy feet and even clumsier brain for not helping him think of a better idea. He concentrated for a moment. There was a good chance Mele could probably take care of herself, even if she didn't know who she was.

No, scratch that. When had he first met her? When he and Kaiji found her unconscious on the floor in the Horrible Hallway. He'd rather not put her safety at risk on a 'good chance,' especially if she was a beacon for trouble. He'd rather just find her and make sure she was all right himself. That'd put his mind at ease.

But how could he find her? A new plan was formulating in his mind as he opened his map. It'd take time, and was a good bit more improbable than he liked, but he had no better ideas than to simply go from room to room and see if he could find her before she got to the second floor. With luck, he might stumble into Scourge as well.

He took a look left and right. Well, she wasn't here. That was one hall cleared.

There were spare batteries in his pack, of course - he'd made sure of that ever since he noticed they were provided - but switching them out at any point would be risky business. Especially since he was in new ground on this trip. Speaking of which...

Skidding to a stop, Wonka set his sack down and began riffling through his pack for the map. Best to double-check which turns to take before going up those stairs.

There were very few people actually lingering in the halls, oddly; there seemed to be no shortage of 'patients', all of whom had been turned loose, but clearly they'd all made off to further parts of the building early. Sephiroth had only just begun to get any sense of the scope of the facility, but clearly it was a large one.

He did see one man, seemingly by himself and cowering, and that was almost enough to stop him...but, after some initial reluctance, he pressed on. There wasn't any actual help he could offer, and he could neither delay his meeting with the Turks nor take the civilian along with him. Besides, though he often helped people, he rarely actually reassured anyone with his presence, a lesson he'd learned the hard way more than once. He would probably only disturb the man further if he approached.

Chris had made a startled sound when he was pulled along, wincing slightly as he felt a few stitches give under the strain. He kept pace with Sean though, despite being frightened and confused. Why didn't they go back to their room? It was easier to defend familiar territory, wasn't it?

This hallway was more crowded, and Addison found himself standing closer to Sean. He allowed their hands to brush, seeking some brief contract. It was the first time he had touched Sean since he had found him that night, and he felt solid. Real. Frighteningly so. This wasn't a dream. The walls loomed overhead threateningly, and the only comfort in sight was Sean. Addison was tempted to grab his hand again, but thought he needed an excuse to make such a bold move. Sean was calm and didn't need him.

"When I first went out at night, I was going to go outside, and just walk away," he told Sean. "I thought that I could return to you, and-" Addison faltered. He had also thought that he would be forced to try and initiate the Third Impact again. On some level he still had until that morning. "But I was plagued by what I thought I was. What I thought I had done, or failed to do."

Unconsciously, Shinji drew a bit closer to Kaworu. He blushed as their hands brushed and he briefly remembered their conversation in the showers, Kaworu's thin, bony hand atop his own. The strange, mixed feelings. The confusion. The idea that this boy loved him. He shrugged off and fervently hoped that his blush would be missed in the dark of the hallway. The hallway actually seemed (if possible) more claustrophobic then the other. Hadn't it felt bigger during the day? He shuddered and glanced back at Kaworu in tim to catch his words on Third Impact and what had happened (to Shinji) only a day or two ago. He stiffened, remembering the feeling of crushing his friend in the hand of his Eva and managed to hold back the impulse to heave.

He shuddered again, closing his eyes and slowly coming to a halt, "...I... I... stopped you from starting Third Impact, Kaworu. It... it was only a few days ago."

He opened his eyes again, trying to keep calm, "...I didn't want to kill you, but you said... you said I had to, I don't... I just..."

Shinji couldn't find the right words to express just how sorry he was and how much he wished that Kaworu had never tried to do it, had simply stayed his friend and fellow pilot, and what they could've been.

"...I'm sorry."

Asch sighed and pulled out his map to take a quick glance at it. Again, the second floor was probably his best bet. Grell had seemed to think there were "torches" up there. Asch still had his doubts, but he didn't have a better idea.

He had a feeling it was going to be one of those nights.

Well, at least they'd made excellent time walking...and, Jade noted, they'd happen to run into one of the other God-Generals trapped in the institute. Fortunately not Sync; given Anise's note from earlier, such an encounter would have resulted in only one of them walking away.

"Ah, Asch," he greeted the other man brightly, if only because he knew that brightness would annoy him. Asch was predictable, reliable, and in a way that was somewhat comforting. "I hadn't expected to see you here."

In the darkness, Aiden hadn't realized he'd passed one of the nurses station doors already. He wasn't so sure on just where they were supposed to be either, so after crossing the hallway, finding stairs instead and turning back to look, he realized that there was a door just inside one of the hallways.

"Oh..." he drawled. Well, there definitely weren't any nurses around, otherwise he'd have seen flashlights and heard warnings about going back to their rooms. Maybe he'd have heard some tranq. guns firing off too and some orderlies tackling patients. Maybe. But there was nothing, and that just made him sigh more. "What the hell is going on?" he said again, scratching at his head.

[GERONIMOOOOOOO]

If Kurobear Aiden used his ninja senses, he would've been able to notice 'hell' charging towards him at full speed, which--oh no...

Chise inwardly swore at her unwanted ability of absolute clumsiness as she tripped over an invisible bump in the floor and barreled into the man with a loud shriek.

Halfway there! Kind of. Sort of. Maybe... At any rate she was almost there, so she was entitled to a little happiness, okay? It was a bit of a relief to finally reach the larger main hallway anyway, even if she'd be going back to the smaller ones momentarily.

Not wanting to dawdle though, Kitty kept up her pace, moving quickly before turning into the next hall.

Allen really wasn't sure what direction to head in, now. He thought that maybe he should look upstairs. That would probably be the best bet if he wanted to find anything out about this place, wouldn't it? But he wasn't really sure. Well, he'd just have to think for a minute and see. Not having a plan was probably not the best course of action, but he'd manage! He had to.

And out into the hall. No sign of Kagura or Sokka, but that wasn't odd considering how many were here. There were always others.

That boy over there, for instance.

White hair, a tattoo over one eye - or was that a scar? - and most importantly, a purposelessly lost look on his face. He was new; she was sure she would have remembered seeing him with such a distinctive look. Consequently, he'd likely be easy to conscript into her retinue; the question remaining was if he would be worth the effort.

A confidant smile on her lips, Hime approached the boy.

"Nowhere to go, boy?" she asked with the kind of air that usually surrounded villains and killers. Well, not that she ever claimed to be a hero. Sometimes things just needed a good bit of killing, preferably with a chainsaw.

This was where they'd gone up the stairs last night, right? Haine was pretty sure it was. He could see the stairwell from here. So that was a step. He still didn't have a map. Oops. Oh well, like he really needed one. He'd figure it out.

He stopped and looked around, trying to decide which way to go. He could hear that voice in the back of his head, though it was only chattering, not saying anything of any importance.

He ignored it, and started walking again.

Finally coming out into the main hallway, Sho turned the corner a bit too quickly, his dragging shovel snagging on the doorway as he did. Meeting sudden and unexpected resistance to his run, the Reaper found himself stumbling and turning about to unhook his weapon. He did so without a hitch, but one full rotation later saw his course making a violent intersection with the back of white-haired weirdo.

"Hey, watch it!" he growled with a complete lack of perspective on who was at fault here.

As expected, the bigger hallway proved to be more busier than the previous one. Seeing no immediate danger put Yukari at ease, and she quickly moved on down and into the direction she needed to continue pursuing.

After cautiously looking around the hallway and deeming it safe to tread across, Touya let Yue and Sakura walk ahead of him. He definitely had a bad feeling about where they were headed, but he figured everyone else probably had the same bad feeling too. No need to incur doubts or panic in anyone except himself.

It wasn't as though he had expected any other response than the one they'd received, but Yue still needed to object to Sakura putting herself in danger. That was what he did, after all, and to ignore the need to protect her would be to ignore his own nature. It also left him somewhat more on edge now than he had been before, now that she had joined the group and they'd ventured back out into the hallways.

Possibly because of that, Touya's decisive 'no more arguments' tone had earned him a mildly irritable sidelong glance, but Yue said nothing as he stepped ahead to take the lead of the small group. He still wasn't entirely sure about his relationship with Touya; he was the brother of Yue's current master, the source of the magic that sustained his life, and the one his false self loved. It seemed best simply to avoid dealing with him in any way other than distantly polite. Although Yukito was right, he should be at least somewhat nicer, if only in gratitude for saving his life.

That's not why I think you should be nicer to him, though, Yukito observed in a mild undertone.

Yue only huffed quietly and moved on.

So far, so good. There was no sign of anything violent, or much of anything for that matter. It was a little disappointing in a way, not to mention disheartening. If there were terrible things around every corner, then at least it would give a reason for Reno and Rude to be so accepting of being trapped. Well, no it wouldn't, but it would give her an explanation for why they were still here when they should have blown up a wall and been long gone and probably getting drunk in a seedy dive of a bar somewhere. She'd happily go with them.

The lack of anything the last few night was just disheartening.

She was about to turn up the corridor towards the block of men's rooms when she heard something. She paused, frowning and changed direction. Something familiar. A voice. She couldn't quite place it, but the timbre, the cadence... she knew that, assuming she wasn't just imagining it.
