Night 45: Main Hallway, 1-West

[from here]

Once away from the safety of the patient block, Momo slowed down as she traveled along the left hand wall to cover her blind spot. In this position, she could easily draw her sword and deal with issues as they arose. Hopefully, there would be none.

Momo had too much on her mind to want to deal with anything she didn't have to.

"I met him through a few days ago. I'd seen him before, though. I've been here a very long time." Sometimes, Celes thought it was too long. She wondered what would happen, who she would be, if she just gave in to the Institute. "That's also when I met Guy. They had needed to be healed, and I wasn't about to let that fool Dias wander off with a wound that could..."

Celes trailed off and adjusted the jeweled comb in her hair. "Well, anyway, that is how we met. I have to confess to not knowing either of them very well." Or Dias, but they hadn't needed personal stories to communicate.

Dias... that had to be the swordsman from last night. Guy had mentioned that name once before, and the way Celes trailed off seemed to confirm it, in a way.

"You knew Guy, too?" It hurt a little to use the past tense like that. "Me and Guy came from the same place, so..." They had been kind of close. He was the one friend from home who had always been there, even as all their other friends kept disappearing. But thinking about that made a prickly, painful sensation creep up Anise's throat, so she left that thought unfinished, and instead changed the subject.

"...Claude really is late, huh?"

Without any regard for what or who could be lurking in the shadows, Claude tore into the next hallway, his flashlight beam shaking from his movements. When he caught sight of the two girls up ahead, relief washed over him. So they'd waited after all. What a relief! Breathing a heavy sigh, he slowed down and approached them.

"S-sorry I made you wait," he told them as briefly averted his gaze. "Something came up, but it's been taken care of now." That was probably an inadequate thing to say, Claude knew. But he couldn't bear to tell them what it was that had actually happened, especially now. The specks of blood on his shoes and the way the bottom of his shirt was ripped probably hinted that he'd encountered more than he was willing to let on. But they had things they needed to do tonight, so he could only hope no one would grill him too hard about it for the time being.

Celes raised an eyebrow, and wondered if she should keep quiet on the subject of his shirt or not. She chose to, anyway; more questions would just make eat up more of the time that they needed.

And they were running out of it at a pace Celes wished was somewhat slower. "It's fine. Anise and I were only talking. Shall we go? We're losing time standing here and apologizing."

As if on cue, Claude appeared almost immediately after Anise mentioned him. His arrival caught Anise by surprise, both because of the timing and because he came from a different hall than she expected.

When Anise looked at Claude, she could immediately tell something was off. He looked kind of rattled, and he wouldn't even look at them while giving his vague excuse for being late. His shirt looked messed up, too. What the heck happened?

Anise opened her mouth to ask, but stopped when Celes spoke instead. She gave the woman a questioning look. Really? She was just going to let that go? Celes wasn't an idiot; she had to have noticed something was weird, too. But it was true that they had limited time, and Anise still wasn't sure what they were going to do with the bodies if they found them. Maybe they were going to have to figure it out when they got there.

"Nngh... fine. Let's get moving before any monsters start thinking we're easy targets," Anise conceded, frowning at Claude. She then turned and began making her way to the stairwell at the end of the hallway.
