Night 44: Grand Ballroom
[From here]
Dahlia made her way over to the fountain first thing and went to sit down next to it. Believe it or not, her feet were still aching from last night and just because this room never stopped being gorgeous did not mean she stopped being sensible. If there was something going on soon, she needed to be ready for it.
Hmph. More like ready to push either one of these brats into the fray instead of dealing with it herself. Either or, she'd need to rest for a little while. May as well drop her bag for now while she was at it, too; the strap was bugging the bandaged gash along her back.
She wasn't dumb though. She kept one of her hands on it just in case someone got grabby.
"So, um." She brought her other hand to her mouth, thinking to herself. Did she dare ask now? Or was Syncie going to keep some more secrets from her? "What do we do now?"

The ballroom was just as breathtaking as it had been the night before, though Anise wasn't in the mood to give it much admiration this time. The girl had fallen silent some time ago, unable to tear her mind away from her fears for the night.
Across the massive room, she could see the white marble doors. That was their destination... though Anise guessed that Sync might not want them to go through right away. If he was trying to lure Guy and Claude into a trap, he'd probably wait for them to show up before disappearing behind a door they might not be able to follow them through.
Anise considered trying to rush the group ahead, but then she remembered. There was a good chance she'd die in the next room. Escaping into another room in the basement was impossible too, if it was true that they needed three people to get around. She had nowhere to go.
In the end, all she did was sit down next to Dahlia, staring at the floor but still sneaking a few glances at the entrance they came through.

This meant setting up everything while he still had the time. Sync walked over to where the other two sat, though he refrained from settling down as well.
"I invited a few more people to join us," Sync answered with a small nod. He'd given Dahlia a very brief summary earlier, so it shouldn't have come as a surprise. "Getting through here last night with just the three of us was a little dangerous, so I thought it'd be smart to travel in a bigger group."
He then glanced over at the southern set doors, frowning slightly.
"Dahlia, can I have the shield?"
no subject
Thankfully, Sync interrupted her act before she vomited at herself. "The shield?" Right now? Tch. Someone wasn't very patient. "Wouldn't it be better to wait for your friends?" She helpfully pointed out, tilting her head as she looked up at him.
But it wouldn't be very lady-like for her to deny him, would it? She'd just have to be more convincing.
"I mean," she began hesitantly, reaching inside the bag to pull out the shield. She didn't fork it over, though. Just held it to herself and watched the light reflect off its curves. "What if something happens when you put them into the door? Shouldn't we all be together...?"
no subject
"Yeah, Sync, what's the hurry?" Anise chimed in, doing her best to look indifferent while she latched on to the opportunity to inconvenience the God-General, even if just a little bit.
About the only thing left that Anise could hope for was for Guy's group to never show up. If that happened, and Sync really wanted them involved in this, then her group could be left waiting all night. Without moving ahead, none of them would be put in danger. Of course, Guy probably wasn't going to think about it that way. He had every reason to believe something terrible would happen whether he made it or not. And with that being the case, there wasn't much that could possibly stop him from reaching them.
no subject
"Hmm? Who said I was going to put it in?" The God-General tilted his head, giving both girls an amused look like he found it funny they assumed he'd rush into it. He merely laughed then, pulling out the short sword he'd been carrying and slowly unraveled the cloth wrapped around it.
"I just haven't really had the chance to see it for myself," Sync finally confessed, kneeling down onto the floor to show Dahlia the ornate weapon. He had to make himself look convincing, right? That meant letting his words die down to a murmur, flickering his eyes over to where Anise sat as he hesitantly continued.
"I mean, after what happened..."
no subject
...Unless it had something to do with his little friends tagging along. What was he gonna do, flaunt it to them? Or did he think he could kill her and Anise before they got there and continue on his fun-quest with them? Did he think he could just push her over when he thought she was weak? He may get away with offing Anise and Dahlia would be right there with him when it came to getting rid of the useless little girl, but he wasn't touching her.
So she stayed her ground-- Oh, right, pull the Anise card, Sy-sweetie. Hmph. Like she cared. Still, she couldn't act like a brat here and risk her cover being blown because she felt like tormenting her frog prince. Fine.
"I guess..." With an innocent smile, she held her arm to Sync, shield in hand. How great would it have been if she could crush the damn thing in her palm, right in front of his face, and watch his dreams go up in flames? The idea just made her smile all the more genuine. "I just wanted to be careful."
no subject
She didn't move, though. The only thing she could think to do was just to stay next to Dahlia. Once things got out in the open, Dahlia was going to be the one in the most danger. Anise wasn't all that confident she could protect her from Sync, but even so, she wasn't going to leave her alone for even a second.
Since a glare was too suspicious, she tried to soften her expression, but it was impossible to keep the anxiety from showing on her face. They were just too close to an impending confrontation for her to even pretend to relax.
no subject
Sync could practically feel Anise's glare on him, but he ignored it and smiled when Dahlia finally agreed to hand the artifact over. The God-General gingerly took the miniature shield, standing back up to his full height and carefully inspected its design.
Much like the sword the shield's decorations were just as ornate, signifying its importance. He flipped the object in his palm a few times, finally looking up after a minute and glancing back over to where the marble doors resided. Considering the circumstances it'd be better to keep close to it, and so Sync began to make his way over. Yet, just as promised, he made no move to actually put the artifacts in, merely glancing at the indentations on either side with a thoughtful expression.
"I hope they get here soon..."

She watched him walk away, listening to the sound of his footsteps echoing across the ballroom, with a faint smile on her face. She couldn't wait until tomorrow night. He was her puppet then (not that he wasn't now. He was just too stupid to realize that) and if he liked danger so much, he could have as much of it as he wanted when he was doing what she wanted him to.
But she did have to wonder what the bigger party was for. What was going on in that little boy brain of his? If there was something in the coliseum that he wanted, why drag more people? Why not stick with the ones you can easily take out? She tilted her head as she stared at him, trying to read him like the book she knew he was.
Oh. Oh... This was one of those punks who just had to have a challenge while fighting, huh? And since he wanted so badly to go into a coliseum, but bring extra friends when all he had with him were two, meek girls... Ha! That sneak! Or did he really want to kill someone special and have an excuse in case it came back to him? Well, she'd give him credit for thinking that way.
Whatever. She looked back at the stairs near her when he started whining about his other company. If she wasn't important to this plan anymore (if she was right about her theories and she had a feeling she was. Sync wasn't very complicated), she didn't have to care.
no subject
It was worth a try. Anise wasn't going to have any more chances after this.
"Dahlia," she whispered as quietly as she could, "Stay close to me, no matter what happens. This... might be hard to swallow, but listen to me and don't freak out, okay?" She paused, both to consider her words and to hopefully give Dahlia a chance to prepare herself.
"Sync's dangerous. If he gets his way tonight, he might kill us both. There's help on the way, though, so if we just stay calm and keep our distance..." ...then they could get away safely. Anise already had a feeling that Dahlia didn't handle emotional stress that well, but hopefully she'd be able to keep a controlled front, so as not to alert Sync to what they were talking about. This was their last chance.
no subject
"Dangerous?!" she squealed, wide-eyed. Oh, whoopsie, that was too loud, wasn't it? Oh no! She immediately brought a hand to cover her own mouth. Was Sync watching? Oh no, what if Anise were right, what should they do?!
She leaned forward, tears just beginning to spring to her pretty brown eyes. Dahlia whispered to the other girl, just so afraid! "Are... are you sure?"
no subject
Maybe this was why the God-General pulled away from the group, acting like he was too busy examining the marble doors. Actually, it had been his original intention, but halfway through he realized that he'd just given the Guardian the perfect opportunity to try and to save herself. Even now he used his peripherals in an attempt to study their body language, watching carefully for any sort of movement that would trigger a reaction.
Luckily, Dahlia had done all the dirty work for him, and he spun around fully just as the redhead clamped a hand over her mouth. Sync blinked at the pair, quickly making his way over before kneeling before them.
"Is there anything wrong …?" For that moment he looked worried, like the conversation was about anything else but him.
Yet he gave no warning when he suddenly reached out and violently grabbed the Guardian's neck, forcing her to get back on her feet with a harsh tug. By then he had all but dropped his facade, gracing the teen with a dangerous smirk as if daring her to try and pull something to test his patience. Even now he pressed his thumb into Anise's throat, making sure he got his point across.
"You can ease up now, Dahlia," Sync began casually, tossing the redhead an amused smirk as he began to drag Anise towards the door. "I was going to kill her off anyway."
no subject
"Not so loud!" Anise hissed, but it was too late. Sync was already on his way back. Anise stiffened where she sat, her face the same mixture of anxiety and hatred it had been when he last saw her. For a moment, it looked like Sync was just giving her a warning...
...But then he made his move. Anise yelped in pain and surprise when the God-General's hand suddenly clenched around her neck and pulled her to her feet. Her one hand still held her weapon, and she tightened her grip so as not to drop it. The other flew to her throat, trying to pry Sync's fingers away.
As she was yanked along, the girl choked out whatever protests, threats, and curses she could force out of her tightened airway, but she stopped abruptly when she heard his next words.
Dahlia?
Anise fought to turn her head to look at the other girl, finding that it hurt even more when she moved. What did Sync mean by that? Why would he say that to Dahlia?
It couldn't be...
no subject
Was that brat calling her out? Now? What a waste of space! She didn't give the idiot permission to blow her cover! Still... Knowing Sync had plans to off their tenacious little fungus of a girl was a bonus.
If she didn't have to work to keep her cover or kill the brat later? Whatever.
So Dahlia stood up and followed the other two. If she was in this, she was in this for the prize and hell if she was getting it by flaking out now. Anise could take the fall for them and it'd be perfect!
"Hee." Her hands found their way to her face again and she just blushed in the most adorable way as she giggled. Was Anise that surprised? How shocked must she be to find the girl she was trying to protect was more dangerous than the man she had thought was so terrible? Was she going to cry? How sweet! "Let's keep that to ourselves, okay Syncie?"
no subject
"Fine, fine. You win this time," Sync laughed, expression softening as if he was just joking around with a good friend. In fact, he was (expect for considering Dahlia as more than a convenient acquaintance), but he needed something to lighten his mood after having to drag Anise around with that fake smile plastered on his face. It was obvious that he didn't care about the girl's well being as he continued to drag her along, stopping just as they reached the door and approached Dahlia with an outstretched arm.
"Here. Can you put this in the other indentation?" During their little event Sync had taken the time to balance both artifacts with one hand, gripping the sword's handle with his last three fingers while pinching the shield between his thumb and forefinger. He had carefully set the shield into Dahlia's palm once she reached out before pulling back and making his way over to one of the indentations.
Taking one last glance over his shoulder, Sync carefully fitted the sword inside.

Finally, all of that darkness opened up into light, and Guy was no longer forced to squint and see if their quarry was still up ahead of them. No, the forms of Sync, Anise, and another girl he didn't know were crystal clear. Sync was in the middle of placing one of those artifacts into its appropriate slot, while holding hard onto Anise with his other hand.
Why hadn't Anise told him about this? Guy had sensed that she'd wanted to, but in the end she hadn't gotten the words out. Maybe she hadn't wanted to worry him, but this wasn't the sort of thing you tried to handle on your own! He'd brought two people along with him, hadn't he?
At this point, though, Claude and Dias were far from his mind. Right now all Guy could think about was the way Sync's hand was curled around Anise's throat.
He broke out into a run, holding his sword at his side with all intention of using it if he had to. He wasn't sure how the third member of their group fit into all of this, but his main priority at this point was stopping Sync from getting any further with this quest of his.
"What the hell are you doing?!" he snapped as he closed the distance between them, and it was hard to tell if the question was aimed at Sync or Anise.
no subject
However, when he saw Sync with his hand around the throat of one of the girls, he began moving faster without any conscious direction. Boy or not, there were some things he wouldn't permit while he could possibly prevent them.
no subject
He wasn't sure why Anise was here -- if Sync was involved, though, that had to mean he'd tricked her and that other girl somehow. The thought of Sync targeting other victims, to say nothing of someone he considered a friend, strengthened his resolve that much more. Grip tightening on his weapon, Claude ran along side Dias, eyes narrowed as he focused on the replica.
Sync might have gotten away the last time he'd screwed with them, but not this time. They'd just see what the bastard would do now that he was outnumbered!
no subject
Anise was being dragged by the neck to what could end up being her death, and Dahlia was giggling.
Everything Anise went through in the basement had been for nothing. Dahlia was never an innocent victim to begin with; she was a willing accomplice. While Anise believed she was protecting someone, all she was really doing was helping Sync set up his trap for her and her friends.
She could feel her eyes welling up with tears of frustration. All of this could have been avoided if she hadn't bought their stupid act!
Just as one of those tears started to make its way down her cheek, Anise heard Guy's voice. She turned her head as far as it would move to see.
Her heart made a small leap of joy at the sight of Guy, but it quickly sank again when she remembered how she hid all of this from him. She wanted to say something to him - a lot of somethings, even - except not only was there no time for that, but she wasn't even sure the words would even come out. With her throat squeezed so tightly, she couldn't breathe normally, and instead she took frequent shallow gasps, just to get some air.
There were two others with Guy. It was a relief that he came prepared, but it was too soon to relax. Sync had been expecting this, after all. Now that the God-General couldn't afford to give Anise all of his attention anymore, the girl started struggling again, pulling at the arm that held her neck in an attempt to loosen his grip, or at the very least, distract him a bit for Guy.
no subject
"What the hell are you doing?!"
And aww, there was the promised company, right on schedule! Sure, Annie might be friends with them and eventually tell them that she was just as rotten as Syncie if she survived tonight, but who'd believe her when the evidence was so in her favor? She already had a backup plan in mind for that train of unfortunate events (because, let's face it. Sync was horrible at keeping his promises). But how on earth was a girl supposed to victimize herself without anyone to sympathize with her plight?
Once those knights in shining armor stepped in, Dahlia let out a gasp and backpedaled closer to the door. Please don't point those swords at her! Can't they see she was just as scared at Anise was?!
no subject
The God-General scowled when Anise struggled harder against his grip, suddenly pulling the Guardian closer to him and plowed his knee right into her stomach. It didn't matter if the other group saw; in fact, he'd done it partly to rile up the others even more.
"It's been a while Guy," He began with a snide expression, waving the latter off with his free hand as he turned back around to face the door. "Maybe if Anise behaved then this would've been more pleasant for all of us."
Yet for someone who could potentially have their plans ruined Sync hardly looked upset. In fact, he looked even happier than when he was just traveling with Anise and Dahlia, but now wasn't the time to reminisce.
With Guy closing in there was no time to waste, yet just as he reached out a loud click filled the air, signifying that something had occurred with the door. The God-General immediately grabbed the handle and pulled hard, grinning when the object gave in and opened in response. He didn't wait to see what was inside, propping the door open with his foot in order to take Dahlia's hand into his own before pulling both girls into the next hall.

However, Guy pursued Sync so quickly upon the opening of the door that he and Claude were more or less left in his wake; he'd known from the first that Claude had a large personal stake in this, could have worked it out from body language alone, but Guy - whom Dias couldn't read quite as well, not being as familiar with him - clearly had his own score to settle. The man had been anxious and eager before, but whether it was the captive girls or simply the sight of their quarry, Guy was evidently in a positive froth now.
Unfortunately, if Sync was as conniving as he sounded cruel, he'd probably use that to his advantage. He didn't like the thought of leaving Guy to face Sync alone, even though he had no reason to believe Guy wasn't the better fighter(so say nothing of having height, weight, and reach advantages). "Come on," he snapped to Claude, voice clipped.
no subject
In the back of Claude's mind there were niggling doubts over what may have been running into. It was dark. They hadn't been up there before. But all of that was overshadowed by the pressing need to rescue Sync's hostages. If they could just get them somewhere safe, or at least out of Sync's clutches, they could unleash everything they had in dealing with the boy. Either way, they couldn't just let Guy fight Sync alone. They needed to support him!
Dias had urged him along, but it wasn't necessary. In fact, Claude already charged forward, hot on the heels of their enemy.

The great room below was as it had been the last night the three of them had been down there, and just as echoingly quiet as all the other rooms had been since the Sun Room. It felt somehow unnatural to travel in peace, and Yue remained quite alert as he made his way down the stairs and into the room proper. Whoever had been down here before them appeared to have already passed on to...wherever they were going.
Which raised the question - where were they going? The last time they'd gone through that door, so perhaps they should try one of the others. Perhaps the next one in clockwise order, then. He glanced back over his shoulder at the others and gestured in that direction, still trying to remain quiet lest anything be listening.
no subject
Following the contour of the room, Sakura, Yue, and Touya passed the door they had entered previously and ended up at the door at the opposite end of the hall. Even before they had gotten close, the door looked magnificent. Carved with marble angels, Sakura couldn't help but gasp in amazement as they approached. As she observed the doors, her eyes were eventually drawn to two indentations. Once they were in reach of the doors, Sakura went over each indentation with her hand.
"Does something go here?" she asked, still staring at the indentations.
no subject
"Probably," Touya said, gently putting a hand on Sakura's to try to get her to stop touching the creepy door. For all he knew, it'd open and suck them all in if it was touched.
He looked over his right shoulder at the door opposite the one they went through a few nights ago. That one had angels on it too, but he didn't feel as... uncomfortable looking at that one.
"Let's try that door over there, I think this one needs keys of some kind. One of the openings looks like it needs that weird sword we got the other night." He turned at looked at Yue, "You still have that, right?"
no subject
Perhaps the other object was what they needed to obtain from whatever lay beyond the opposite door. That could explain why two of the doors looked near-identical but this one was different: the rooms had to be visited in turn? It seemed logical enough.
Yue nodded slightly to Touya's question, still frowning thoughtfully at the door for a moment longer. "It returned with me." And was currently hidden in his closet, behind Yukito's stash of snacks, because he hadn't thought it terribly useful.
The guardian finally turned away and started toward the next door without looking back, knowing that the other two would follow. He was impatient, restless with the need to accomplish something tonight; he wanted to get both Sakura and Touya away from here and out of danger as quickly as he possibly could.

As Kratos stepped into the ballroom, his eyes widened, mostly from the spectacle of the room itself. It was improbable to think that such a space even existed below a mental asylum, and yet here they were, standing in one of the largest ballrooms he'd ever seen.
It was also one of the most eerie, entirely covered in shades of black or white, and as Kratos moved further into the room's expanse, he got the feeling that something terrible was hiding here.
There were a number of equally ornate doors in the wings of the room, and Kratos glanced toward Hitsugaya. "Any ideas on how to proceed?"
no subject
Since this was his first time down here, Hitsugaya didn't really know where to go. He'd need to scrounge for some more info on the bulletin board tomorrow, because somehow, he felt Hinamori wasn't being completely forthcoming with him, not that he could blame her.
"We'll head to the east hall. I'll take the lead. Kratos, you'll cover our rear, and Faize, you'll support us with symbology. Alright?" Hitsugaya remembered his earlier conversation with Hinamori and was trying to take it to heart, but he knew that changing his ways wasn't easy.
no subject
And also quite telling. He didn't know of any planet on which a room like this would be built in a mental hospital. Though Faize had already seen more than enough to conclude that Landel's was far more than a hospital, this further highlighted it.
"...I understand," he replied once he finished taking in the unusual sight. Taking his position in the group, he followed Hitsugaya to the ornate door at the east end of the room, which opened easily for them.
