Night 43: West Wing, South Hall 1-B

[from here]

Something didn't feel quite right about the building as Beatrix stepped out into the hallway. Moving to the left, she put her back against the wall to wait for Wonka to arrive. She wasn't sure what didn't feel right about it, but her instincts were warning her to expect more of the unexpected and to trust what she felt, not her eyes.

A flicker of movement out of the corner of her eyes, yet nothing was there. Her eyes narrowed. Yes, something wasn't quite right.

Well, Alkaid was almost halfway there, wasn't she? To 'their spot' or whatever.

And, again, something still felt a little strange about the Institute. Not that it wasn't always strange, but her first couple days here had been... well, the same old place, with monsters here and there. And then last night with the zombies. But tonight it was off. Maybe it was the strange intercom noise? Just.. the whole atmosphere was a little glitchy or something.

As she jogged, she noticed another blonde woman standing near the wall again, whom she pointedly looked away from. She was gonna fight this cannibalistic urge! A stupid zombie infection couldn't just have its way with her shiny new body! No one could!

Alkaid almost wished she had a compact mirror here with her, to check if parts of her face were rotting away. And to make sure there wasn't, like, a piece of steak in her teeth.

She kept going.

The women's rooms should be off this hallway, according to his map and what Yuffie had said. Suzaku was glad he had made it through the deathly silent main hall without running into anything, but the possibility was always there, so he kept glancing over his shoulder even as he found the door on the left.

Sheesh, this was taking a long time. Well, He didn't want to go any faster until Loz felt better, but this hallway was really freaking long. And he kept on seeing weird stuff and turning to look but it was gone by the time he did. "Wish it'd stop doing that," he grumbled, glaring at a wall that had looked kind of like a door a moment ago.

The same thing happened to Loz right as it happened to Beelzemon. He could have sworn he'd seen an extra hallway or something. "Yeah, this is kinda starting to get pretty creepy." Even Loz had to admit that. "I kinda keep getting the feeling that something's gonna jump out and surprise us. And not in a good way."

Sync didn't bother to pay much attention to the voices that lingered in this hall. It was only expected for people to finally make their way out of the patient blocks, and as long as they didn't interfere with his plans he saw no need to interact.

From what he remembered Dahlia had informed him that her room number was F34. He could only hope that she wouldn't try to drag her roommate into their affairs. The last thing he'd need was more dead weight.

And now to the main hall. There seemed to be quite a number of people here, but no one that she recognized - which was good. It meant that if she hurried, she might avoid meeting him in the halls at all. Picking up the pace, she continued on upward toward the male block.

A few stragglers here; there were a pair speaking to each other as they slowly moved south, and another individual waiting patiently under one of the flickering lights. Starscream paid little attention to them, however. He continued forward at a quicker pace; the stairwell was right at the end of the next hall.

Another hall, a few more people. No monsters so far. Not that she was surprised; Hime assumed they would wait for some fool soul to wander out by themselves into the darkness. They had numbers here, and even humans, in enough quantity, were nothing to be trifled with.

Still, it seemed the crowd was less out in the larger hallways, meaning if she ventured out now, she would be just one of those fool souls. Should she wait for now? Of course, this depended on her trusting the patients themselves...

It was with this quandary on her mind that Hime stood just outside the Female Block.

And then I'll poke his eyes out! Kagura thought. Knee him in the balls-- ah, but I'll never get to have nephews and nieces if that happens-- oh who cares! I'll knee him in the balls, then hit him on the head, hard! These Kagura acted out in her mind, vividly, and occasionally with her body. It was a good thing nobody was hit yet.

"HOCHAAAAAAAA!" Kagura screamed as she kicked the wall. Hard. She stared at her foot, then at the wall, then at her foot again. "Ouch," she mumbled as she stood on her left foot and tried to massage the pain away from right.

She was also face to face with this girl she has never met before. Patient? Monster? Monster-patient? Kagura couldn't tell.

"Yo."

Hmph. No sign of his daughter. The prosecutor frowned. Franziska had only a short distance to go to meet him here. Where was she?!

While he waited, he looked around. There were two other women standing nearby, apparently waiting to meet others. They were unfamiliar to him, and he had no interest nor need to speak to them.

Going back and forth was inefficient, but it was the only choice she had. Thankfully, she'd managed to miss her father on both trips - the outgoing and the incoming - meaning he would have no idea she now had evidence against him. No. Possible evidence. Not conclusive. Nothing conclusive yet. And she would not present such inconclusive evidence, not in a million years. As he had taught her, a case had to be perfect. The perfect witness and the perfect evidence to create a perfect victory and a guilty verdict.

Stepping out into the hall, dog leash over one shoulder, journal flat against her back in her waistband and flashlight in her right hand, she gave the hall a quick onceover before her eyes settled on a familiar form. There he was; waiting as if she were the late one. Stalking up to him, she courtseyed as she always did and then stood tall again, one hand on her hip. "My apologies. Leaving the room proved harder with a new roommate." Lies, but good ones. Plausible ones that she doubted the new roommate would care much about. "Were you waiting long, Papa?"

He noticed the dying glow from a flashlight and heard some fading voices coming from the end of this hallway, but as long as he wasn't being followed he had no qualms about that. With another glance over his shoulder, he continued walking.

He took the first door to his right and pushed. Seeing as this, too, was unlocked (as all doors now are, it would seem), he continued towards the next hallway.

"According to the map I got earlier, we just need to head around this corner, and then it's the first block on the right. Everything's set up like the women's rooms are, so I don't think finding our way there will be too much of a problem." Euphemia's voice sounded sure, for the most part, but it cracked just a little at the end. Her nerves were showing just a bit.

So, Teresa wasn't the only one seeing things. It was slightly comforting to know she wasn't imagining things, but unlike the girl she had a better way to keep track of things, using her fine tuned senses to keep track of what was around them. In fact, she picked up the faintest presence of youma. The creature had already moved on, but there was no mistaking its passage.

She put a steady hand on Euphy's shoulder. "Trust your gut, not your eyes; you are not the only one affected," she told the girl. The hallway up head was wider, offering more room to maneuver in, yet the darkness was deeper in such places, offering better opportunity for the youma to remain unseen.

"Stay close," she intoned as she moved past Euphy to take the lead.

There were a few more people residing within this hall by the time they made it out of the female block, but Sync ignored them and continued on his way.

"How about you, Dahlia?" The God-General would rather not delve too deeply into Auldrant, and so reflecting the redhead's words back at her seemed like the best choice.

What the-? For a second, the beam of her flashlight reflected off of something metal on the wall (piping?), but when she looked closer, it was gone. ...This place was getting to her already.

"Me?" She asked, trailing behind the other two with a distant look in her eyes. "Nothing that interesting..." Just a valley of spirit-mediums, an insane mother, a whiny twin sister, and an emotionally distant father. Why? "It was a small town, near a bigger city. They did have the most beautiful wild-flowers, though," she lied with a wistful sigh. If it was good enough for court, it was good enough for them.

"It's good to see you've stuck together, though! I'd be so happy to have friends from back home here..."

Almost there, finally. Hanatarou paused for a moment to take a breath, at which point his light abruptly shut itself off.

He gave a startled yelp and held the thing up, staring at it in the darkness as though he could somehow figure out what was wrong. After a minute he experimentally shook it, which made it flicker for a moment and then finally turn back on, albeit rather dimmer than before.

Oh, good. By himself in a dark hallway with a broken light. This was...well, a recipe for disaster.

Hanatarou glanced around himself nervously, then bolted for the door that led to the block of women's rooms. Maybe if he just hurried...

He was nearly to the meeting place. Kratos's nerves were jangling somewhat - mostly because he didn't know exactly what he'd gotten himself into. Leon had seemed fairly disappointed with the clubs, and he had found himself wondering through dinner if this was truly the right course.

In the end, Kratos had reasoned, it was a matter of appropriateness. All he knew was that the clinic was not for him and that until he'd sorted out his own plan of action, he might as well put his skills to use. In any case, he also could not deny the fact that he felt indebted to Momo, even though she was no longer a member of the organization.

This was easy. There was nothing to it; it was the same path the nurse had taken her along after she had woken up earlier that day. Kitty knew she would have to turn off that somewhat familiar path in the next hall, but for now she was grateful for the slight familiarity.

She froze in mid-step, immediately glancing to the left. Odd... She could've sworn the wall had... No. No, that was silly. Her eyes were beginning to play tricks on her. All she had to do was keep calm.

Rubbing her arms in an attempt to shake off the eerie feeling that was creeping in, Kitty picked up her pace and continued on.

Okita had only been to this area once. He'd come to see MOMO for healing, back when the woman was still around. He'd been on his way here once, as well; the last time he'd seen Hijikata in these halls. Thinking of that gave him pause. He had, of course, seen Hijikata once more after that, but he didn't accept that version. He couldn't think of Michael Sugiyama as his leader, or it was too tempting to leave and follow him again. And perhaps that was why Ayumu had not responded to his message.

Starting up the next corridor, Okita paused, noting the people who were standing around here. No one that he knew, but he certainly didn't want to make any waves - despite his outfit. Keeping to the wall, Okita moved for the entrance to the female block and headed inside.

With Ayumu behind him, Okita skirted out into the hallway and checked it. Homura would likely be unhappy at seeing their 'spy' tagging along with him, but there was no choice. Besides, Ayumu could stay in the back and provide support - both medical and tactical. Few people would question where a throwing knife came from until long after a fight, especially when said knife helped rather than hindered.

"We're heading upstairs," he called back to her, softly so that no one else could hear. He didn't think people would be listening in, but then Himura was still somewhere in these halls and Okita wanted to avoid him and that woman at his side as much as possible.

Rounding a corner, Tenpou found himself in a hallway that was similar to the ones that he had begun his trip in. Although he couldn't give this place points originality, it at least made him feel a little less out of sorts when it came to navigating in the dark. In fact, now that he was in this place, he felt comfortable enough to turn his flashlight back on, examining the hallway for a moment to take in any similarities and differences.

There was a door at the end of the hall that he assumed lead to another hallway, and he briefly thought about heading that way. Instead, the feeling that had pulled him this far made him take the door to his left, and as he did so, he had the strangest feeling that something significant was going to occur shortly.
