Night 41: Main Hallway, 1-West

[from here]

The main hallway was empty, too. The quiet was broken only by squeak of S.T's shoes on the tile floor and tiny creaks of metal as the toolbox swung as he walked.

This was the part in the horror movie where the cheerleader took a knife to the throat. Good thing he'd left his pom-poms at home. As long as he was the idiot friend or the brains (hell, both) he should make it at least to the third act.

He hurried along, hugging close to the left-hand wall.

One floor down. The sharp metal in Scourge's hand began to feel a bit more empowering, and in the absence of any real danger he almost thought he could handle it.

Really, there was no one in the main hallway either? Where the hell was everyone? Tim prided himself on his strong nerves - no, Robin did - but this was ridiculous. Luckily, he was almost where he was going. At least, for now.

Traffic would increase soon, she knew. But no smell of blood or people screaming yet.

Yomi paused in the hallway she’d been caught in the night before, where her time had been forcibly taken from her. No burnt flesh, no wounded Shinsengumi, no dying spectres… So far nothing but dark, quiet expanses of hallway.

The peace couldn’t last forever. A person didn’t need to have been in residence as long as she had to learn that.

She swung her flashlight around, more curiously than cautiously, internally marking the nurse’s station behind her, and the two stairwells nearby. Although apparently recommended, Yomi hadn’t brought her radio with her--the possibility of whoever was broadcasting transmissions conveniently spilling something she cared to know about her surrounding that she couldn’t glean from the board during daytime was slim. Still, the effective would probably suit their love for drama at times like these.

If Scar wanted to venture further than this point, he needed a meat shield. Or at least someone that could serve as life bait for any possible threats he could encounter in this dreadful place.

Feline eyes observed the main hallway. This area usually held the highest amount of traffic, which meant the higher probability of finding what he was looking for.

Ah, a lone patient. She did not appear to be a Special Counseling patient, but that didn't mean she was no threat. Or even remotely reliable. Unfortunately, the King was in no situation to be picky so he saw no other option but to approach the female human. It wouldn't do to startle potential Life Bait, however, so he simply switched on his light-stick to betray his presence.

Miles breathed out a heavy sigh as he stepped into the main hallway. Someone else ahead of him had thought to swing their flashlight around, which illuminated the area around him just enough. Nothing was there, only fellow patients moving out for the night.

So why am I so on edge? There's no reason for it.

He waited for a few moments, trying to steady himself against the steady rumble and increasing pain in his head. There's no reason for this. I'm fine.

Turning the corner, Franziska noticed a few others in the area by their flashlights, but heard no voices this time. Sweeping her flashlight along the floor to her right, she saw a set of stairs hugging the corner and then turned to her left. Going up that way would be slower in the long run. She needed to cross the first floor and take the opposite stairs, that would put her directly in front of--

Franziska froze as she noticed the glow of another flashlight illuminate a color that was all too familiar to her. That unmistakable maroon pink, the color that she had long since learned to pick out anywhere just as sure as she had learned to hone in on any blue suits in the area. She had known he was here. She knew they were both here, but that didn't mean she was ready to meet him yet.

But she wouldn't run and she wasn't about to just wait for him to leave. She'd prove to him that she could handle this place better than he ever could, and she'd do it on her first night before the rest of the patients even had a chance to leave their room. Open and shut, just like a court case. Stalking forward, Franziska turned her flashlight on Miles Edgeworth like she would have turned her whip on anyone else. "So this is where you've been hiding, Miles Edgeworth."

Silently, the shinigami padded down the hallway with only a small circle of illumination cast down at her feet from the muted flashlight she had hanging from her sash. She knew these halls so well she didn't need the light, but her hindered sight prompted her to make use of the light she could. She was heading to Fowl's room, Hitsugaya's sword across her back, and she hoped the boy would take her decision to leave Arts & Crafts well enough. The boy was extremely intelligent; surely he understood how much of a liability a broken commander was.

Momo had left her vice captain's badge back in her room. She may be in uniform, but she was not a vice captain at the moment. She was broken.

Hitsugaya felt his old friend's reiatsu before he saw her, causing him to slow his pace. As he stood before her, Hitsugaya realized he didn't know what he wanted to say. He was torn between his duty as a Captain and a friend. They had history together. Back in the 1st District, Hinamori was one of the first people to accept him, and that meant more to him than he ever told her.

"Hinamori... Matsumoto told me about your decision," he said, his voice softer than usual.

There were a few more people out in the hall; traffic for the night was starting to pick up, but Yukari was hardly paying attention to her surroundings, far more interested in her immediate plaything companion.

Learning? What was she learning? How to flirt? No, she was horrible at it and she felt very awkward, especially when the youkai was so good at it.

Wait... why was she even thinking about this? This internal contemplation allowed Yukari's question to completely catch her off-guard.

"W-what?! No! This is not a date!" Sheena started willing the flush that just spread across her face to disappear. "To be a date, we'd have to, like, be dating and we're not, so it's most definitely not a date.." She made a frustrated noise in the back of her throat. "You drive me up a wall, Yukari. And here he was. He apparently wasn't the only one with his own outfit, and Grell eyed the man in pink as he passed by. Pink was a good color, but odd to see it on a man. Then again, Ciel had looked so good in pink.

...

Ugh, Ciel.

Grell stopped by the stairwell entrance and tried his best to blend into the shadows, wondering why he thought of that brat right now. It didn't seem right. With his entire immortal life ahead of him, why he did always go back to thinking about that one little incident? He'd caused quite a stir in the mortal world and, while that had been fun, the end result had been less than satisfactory. So why dwell on it? Why even care?

Perhaps because he really had fallen for her, as stupid as it sounded.

Shaking his head, Grell patted his cheeks to clear the memories from his mind and then waited for his pre-- guest to come.

It seemed his fortune thus far was about to run out. Ciel had grown complacent too quickly, had perhaps even allowed himself to relax too much without visible threats in his way, and for that, he was unprepared when he opened the door and walked straight into another warm body -one that reeked of familiarity.

As Ciel looked upwards to see who it was, his uncovered eye nearly popped out of his head, gaping in surprise at the very person he'd been hoping to avoid. He had been planning instead to steal one of the rosters of the institution and find out where Grell was being kept rather than such an overt and direct confrontation, especially on his first night. Damn it! This wasn't good at all.

His heart once again lodged itself at the base of his throat, a thousand memories slipping through his mind -scenes that had been replayed endlessly in his nightmare. He still remembered what dress she wore and the way the moonlight kissed the tip of her knife as she held it between them; and he still remembered the way this abomination before him laughed crudely as he dragged his chain saw through her flesh. The thought alone made Ciel sick to his stomach, even able to recall the squelching noises of human tissue being shredded apart by such a cruel and unforgiving instrument.

His eye narrowed at him in contempt, his fear momentarily displaced.

"Grell Sutcliff."

Being in a place where he could hear people but barely see them - if he even got that much going - wasn't something Dean was a fan of, even on normal hunts. Especially if you didn't know who they were or what their intentions were and weren't sure if they were the average, harmless civilian or something else. Ideally, you'd want great visibility, line of sight, unlimited ammo and that special something from the Tooth Fairy, but seeing as they never got off that well even on their best hunts, it was too much to assume things would just fall into place like that. Dean hugged the wall, moving away from that instinctive sense he had of people just filling up space further down the wide hall and away from their voices. Being around people right now was doubly dangerous. He had no idea who was possessed or psychic - or both - and until he had that tattoo, he could still be a liability himself.

Dean kept to the wall, shielding the beam of his flashlight with one bandaged hand as he headed toward the stairwell.

And out into the main hall. He couldn't hear anyone fighting just yet, so he was safe for now. He also really needed to start thinking of another way to power that flashlight, so that he could spot anything that might want to sneak up on him more easily. For the moment, Junior settled with his back against the far wall, where he could be easily seen by the people he was meeting.

The hair was the first thing that struck him, remembering the vague description he had taken from the bulletin. The fact that the young man appeared to be waiting for someone was another hint that he was the person Takasugi had been meant to meet. Not having anything else to go on, Takasugi approached him casually, letting his back touch the same wall the young man was resting against.

His first impression of him was that he was young -very young. Perhaps even close to the Yato's age. Judging from personal experience, youth was never an adequate measure of strength, which made Takasugi all the curious to see what kind of battle experience he had. He was sure the institute would give him ample opportunity to observe.

"Junior, was it?"
