Day 41: Breakfast

Endrance turned his head to look at the intercom, giving it a look that would wither an entire rose garden in an instant. He would never get used to ending up in his room again from somewhere else in the Institute.

He brushed his bangs out of his eyes, not sitting up just yet. He could tell already that his torso had been heavily bandaged, even more so than it had been the night before. The cuts on his arms were covered with fresh bandages, and the one on his cheek seemed to no longer be there at all.

Endrance had been expecting to wake up in a lot of pain, but even that seemed numbed. "They must have given me something," he murmured quietly, as he slowly sat up.

At that moment, his nurse came to get him, pushing a wheelchair along with her. "Peyton, dear, good morning. I've come to take you to breakfast, so..." He shook his head. "I'm fine. There's no need for that...I can walk perfectly well."

She sighed. Well, if he insisted, she wasn't going to stop him. She motioned for an orderly to take the chair away, and walked him to the cafeteria. Once they had gotten there, she pointed him toward a seat, then set a full tray of pancakes covered with syrup, a bowl of fruit, and a glass of orange juice in front of him. "Now eat all of that, Peyton, or else you won't be strong enough to keep walking like that."

He glared at her back as she walked away, then stopped suddenly. There was that faint pulse he'd felt the night before...it was exactly the same.

And so he completely ignored his food in favor of staring at the cafeteria doors, looking at every patient that came in.

Well. That was ... abrupt. Still, he wouldn't let it bring him down!

"I'm Bridget! What's your name?" The young bounty hunter smiled, hoping that this wouldn't be a meal filled with him being cheerful and this man just looking at him the whole time. "Have you been here long?"

[identity profile] ruthless-hunter.livejournal.com 2009-05-11 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's Lockdown," The bounty hunter stated. After taking a few more bites of bacon, he answered the second question, "A couple of days. What about you, miss? How long have you been here?" If this human insisted on conversation, Lockdown would humor her.

[identity profile] roger-hug.livejournal.com 2009-05-11 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Bridget frowned slightly. "I'm not a miss," he said. "I'm a boy." He brightened again quickly though. "I've been here around a week? Maybe two. It's sometimes hard to keep track."

[identity profile] ruthless-hunter.livejournal.com 2009-05-11 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Lockdown raised an optic-brow when the human corrected him. Did he make the mistake because he wasn't as good at telling human genders apart as he thought he did? Or was it because this human just prefered to look and sound like the opposite gender of his actual one? Well, whatever, it didn't matter.

"Yeah, well," Lockdown said, choosing to follow the latter conversation thread. "No matter how long I've been here, I really want to get out and back to my real body and function."

[identity profile] roger-hug.livejournal.com 2009-05-11 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"Function?" Bridget tilted his head. That was a strange way to put it... Bridget smiled. He may have been a bit of an aithead when it came to certain things, but he was still pretty sharp in other respects.

"What was your function?" Was this man another 'droid', like HK? Or was he more like Roger? Or was Bridget simply reading too much into things again?

[identity profile] ruthless-hunter.livejournal.com 2009-05-11 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm a bounty hunter," Lockdown stated casually. From Bridget's reaction to the word 'function', he guessed that this human was unfamiliar with his kind, or just robots in general. The bounty hunter was starting to get used to that. He was prepared to explain in greater detail if the question came up, since Bridget looked rather harmless.

[identity profile] roger-hug.livejournal.com 2009-05-11 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Bridget instantly brightened (if he got any brighter, he might just burst into flames) and sat forward. "Really?! I'm a bounty hunter too!" He thought for a moment.

"You aren't the hunter I spoke with over the board though, are you? The one that didn't believe me?"

[identity profile] ruthless-hunter.livejournal.com 2009-05-11 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Lockdown raised his optic-brows again, before narrowing his optics at the human. "I don't believe you." As a bounty hunter himself and someone who had met other bounty hunters, Lockdown had a very hard time believing this young, bubbly boy was a bounty hunter.

In response to his other question, Lockdown answered. "I don't recall having such a conversation at the board."

[identity profile] roger-hug.livejournal.com 2009-05-11 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Shoulders dropping slightly, Bridget figured he'd just have to get used to nobody believing him. "Well, nobody believes me," he said. Ky hadn't believed him either. At least, not until Bridget had beaten him senseless... And presented him with his bounties. Ky had certainly been surprised then.

"I don't know," he added, trying to cheer up again. "I would think that my apperance and manners would make me perfect. Big bad man like yourself doesn't believe I can take you down, and that makes a lot of people underestimate me."

[identity profile] ruthless-hunter.livejournal.com 2009-05-11 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Lockdown shrugged. "Guess you got a good point there." He still didn't believe this kid was a bounty hunter, though. Especially since he had met mechs (both young and old) who had claimed to be fellow bounty hunters, but were actually just saying that to make themselves sound tough. Their bluffs had always been called when Lockdown or someone else tore them apart.

"By the way, do human coverings normally clean themselves overnight?" Since Bridget had been here longer, Lockdown figured he may as well ask the question that had been nagging his processor all morning and see if the human had an answer.

[identity profile] roger-hug.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
Bridget nodded, glad the older man saw his point, and he grinned.

The question he asked though was a strange one. "Not usually," he said. "But here they clean us up and we get new clothes before we wake up. They bandage us up too!" He held up his left arm, which was still bandaged, but much more lightly than it had been before. He could feel much more of his hand and arm now, and hoped he would be allowed to take off the bandage soon.

[identity profile] ruthless-hunter.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hmm, I see," Lockdown replied, even though the word 'bandaged' was lost on him, until Bridget held up his arm. Either it was some body decoration or it served some purpose, like perhaps it kept vital fluid from leaking. Or perhaps when humans lost limbs, bandages were to keep the limb together. Oh well, he'd think about it later.

Then Lockdown started thinking about the other part of Bridget's explaination. Had the nurses actually come in and replaced his stained coverings while he recharged? Did that mean they had touched him? Lockdown was repulsed by the thought of any humans touching him without consent, no matter what the reason. "They honestly expect us to be okay with such an invasion of privacy?"

[identity profile] roger-hug.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Bridget frowned and shrugged. "Well, considering everything they've done to us so far, I don't think they really care if we're comfortable or not with what they do."

He thought for a moment. "But they let us keep the weaponry we find or make." That had to count for something, right?

[identity profile] ruthless-hunter.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Lockdown's frown softened when Bridget made his second statement. For a minute, he was afraid that his new weapon and trophy had been taken while they were at it.

"Yeah," Lockdown agreed. "Otherwise, I'd have to give the nurses a vivisection." He smiled cruelly at the thought. He'd worked hard for that new knife and dog's jaw last night. Well, he'd worked hard for the jaw, the knife was just handed to him.

[identity profile] roger-hug.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Bridget beamed happily. The thought of this man killing off the staff here didn't faze him in the least.

"That's the spirit! For all the bad stuff that happens, you have to look on the bright side." He was glad he'd gotten the man to smile, even if it wasn't a very nice one.

"And just think of all the new opportunities you have here to go up against new and interesting things! Some of the monsters here even I've never seen before. And being put into difficult situations is a great learning experience too!"

It seemed nothing could bring Bridget's spirits down...

[identity profile] ruthless-hunter.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Lockdown nodded, even though he was genuinely surprised at Bridget's reaction. He didn't expect this young and weak-looking human to share his taste for violence and sadism. This institute was just full of new surprises each day.

Still retaining the sadistic smile, Lockdown said, "Yeah, fighting those four-legged creatures last night was fun. Got a nice trophy out of it too." If the big man with the weapons and his companion hadn't come in early on in the fight though, Lockdown doubted he would have gotten out in one piece.

[identity profile] roger-hug.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"Really?" Bridget was impressed. "One of those yucky skinless ones? I was ambused by four a few nights ago, just outside the walls." He looked down at his bandaged arm with a distasteful frown.

"Those nasty things almost took my whole arm off." HE looked up and smiled again.

"What did you get?" Talk of trophies, and blood, and violence was nothing new to Bridget. The friends he had back home spoke of such things often, but he knew that deep down they were all good people. They just had their own interests.

[identity profile] ruthless-hunter.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Lockdown shook his head. "No, these had short hair on them. I think on of the people I was with called them..." He searched for the word, snapping his fingers. "'Dogs', I think."

He finished off his bacon and started on his eggs before he spoke again. "I cut off the jaw of one of them and skinned the flesh off it. The teeth will make a nice weapon when I decide what to do with them."

[identity profile] roger-hug.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"The dogs? You have to be careful of those," he said. "They run in packs too."

He smiled happily though. "Wow, the jaw? That's really good. I wasn't able to do anything like that, even though the silly thing was less than six inches from my face." He shook hishead. If he'd had his yo-yo's and Roger was up and running, he'd have taken care of them in a heartbeat.

It was all rather depressing. "But I'm just no good with hand-to-hand combat."

[identity profile] ruthless-hunter.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, I noticed. My group was attacked by three of them," Lockdown explained. "I killed one with a knife." The bounty hunter grinned, quite pleased with that accomplishment.

[identity profile] roger-hug.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Bridget clapped his hands lightly, slightly unhappy by the still numb feeling in his left one.

"Wow! That's pretty neat Mr. Lockdown!" He was probably really good with hand-to-hand stuff. He briefly wondered if he could ask for training, but decided against it. The man was probably really busy and had all kinds of things to do.

[identity profile] ruthless-hunter.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, I know," Lockdown chuckled, lifting his right hand to casually examine his hook out of habit, before realizing that it wasn't there and it was now a regular hand again. Instead, he chose to casually examine the hard, pink shells lining the tip of each finger.

"I think I may have even found a potential side-client for when my current client doesn't need me."

[identity profile] roger-hug.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"Really? Be careful they don't cheat you though," Bridget said, remembering the note on the board. "Some people don't seem to want to pay, or they promise to pay, but what they really have isn't worth the job."

Bridget was very careful in picking out his jobs now. That whole mess with Ino and the trouble she caused him had certianly put him off his game. He'd been new at the time, but still! It was insulting.

[identity profile] ruthless-hunter.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Lockdown shrugged. "Trust me, kid, I've dealt with cheats before. They usually either didn't live to see tommorrow or wished I had killed them." The bounty hunter didn't take kindly to double-crossers. The only reason he hadn't hurt Prowl after he turned against Lockdown was because, Primus help him, he actually liked and respected the kid.

"Besides, he's already provided me with a 'down-payment', so I think he's legit enough."

[identity profile] roger-hug.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"I've only been cheated once," Bridget admitted, embarrassed to say so, but it was the truth.

"She didn't last too long though," he added, happy about that, even if it hadn't been him that had had that chat with her. Sol was a good guy though, as was Ky. And Ky had even paid him the money owed! "Do you know anyone here from your own world," he asked, changing the subject.
