Nightshift 39: West Wing, South Hall 1-B

[From here]

Yukari peered up and down the hallway, deciding against shining her flashlight this way and that; she didn't particularly want to attract any monstrous attention. Mentally going over the maps, she tried to remember where she was going. Ritsuka had said M35, right? So that was the next block over... she'd have to go through the West Hall, but hopefully could get through without getting attacked her first night.

M35... why did that ring a bell?

Giving a shrug, the youkai headed on her way.

When Aidou reached the corridor outside the female cellblock, he had the flashlight in his hand, though it remained turned off. Better safe than sorry… as pointless as it was carrying around an item he didn’t need nor valued.

People had obviously already come and gone; the door was already opened.

It looked like she was beating the crowd so far, which was probably good. It meant she was making good time, but it also meant that if anything was lurking in the halls near the patient block, she was more likely to be the first to run into them. Anise did her best to stay alert as she continued through the hallways.

Okay, this was looking sorta familiar. Well, as familiar as these hallways could. At least they weren't neon strobe lights all around.

That had sucked.

Junpei headed into the female block.

No one was waiting just yet. Sakura didn't think she could live it down if she were later than Kakashi one night and then later than Shikamaru the next. He'd said he'd meet her down this hall for supplies, but maybe she should've said that hallway in front of the Sun Room that they'd met at the last few nights? Did it really matter that much?

Sakura sighed and leaned against the nearest wall, flashlight in hand and alert, but obviously waiting for someone. She hadn't been caught off-guard just yet by the monsters here and she didn't intend to let it happen anytime soon.

When he opened the door to the first hall of the women's block, Shikamaru wasn't surprised to see Sakura already waiting. He wasn't known for his tardiness (not like Kakashi, at any rate) but his punctuality wasn't much to brag about either. There was no way she'd believe the real reason behind his lateness, so instead, he yawned and stretched his arms behind his head, unperturbed and seemingly indifferent to the moments she'd probably spent waiting. One hand slid into his pocket as he leaned against the wall beside her, and the beam of yellowish-white light painted a circle on the floor a few inches ahead of his slippered feet. "Who else are we waiting on, Naruto?" Kakashi hadn't left a note on the bulletin, and Sakura seemed to be of the (quite likely) opinion that Jiraiya would rather chase skirts than monsters, though where he'd find skirts in this place was anyone's guess. Sai'd claimed to be busy, which was somewhat of a relief. Although extensive training and experience had made the four-person team structure almost second nature to him, in a situation where so little could be depended on, Shikamaru preferred to work with people who held his unwavering trust.

Kratos peered down at his map under the dim light of the flashlight. He just had to cross this hall, it seemed, and he would be at his destination. Nodding in satisfaction, he put away the map and made his way toward the correct hallway.

Harley swept the light in both directions as soon as she stepped out into the hallway. She'd already learned this one could be dangerous and didn't want to take the chance of bumping into psycho cats tonight.

Alrighty, let's see. She was meeting Mr. Mystery Arkham Guy in, um... M-C Block. Right? ...Right! Yes. Okay. And according to the map, it was real easy to get to. It was right next to her own block, actually.

She turned left and headed toward the big doors at the end of the hallway. Come to think of it, she'd never gone this way. Everything she'd wanted to go toward was off to the right. Weird.

Though it had been hard, and clearly something neither party had exactly wanted to do, Miku left Sousuke and started off towards Subaru's room. If she remembered correctly, the block where the other medium's room was had been located just above her own block, in room 100.

Miku hurried along, the light of her flashlight bouncing and bobbing in the dark.

This seemed to take longer when he couldn't really see. This area of the building was familiar enough that finding his way wasn't a problem, but once he got into the main hall he'd try to take advantage of what little light was offered by other people's flashlights. Though, honestly, the light was as much a comfort as a tool.

There didn't seem to be as many people lingering in this hall, though there were certainly a lot passing through. Daphne tapped her still-off flashlight against her thigh, peering through the gloom for any sign of trouble. True, she'd probably hear a fight before she saw it, but someone could still sneak up on her. Or something. Although she wouldn't admit it aloud, she was still a bit more worried about the someone.

She picked a spot along the wall near the door back into the women's dorms and dropped into a crouch, weight resting on the balls of her feet and her back to the comfortable security of the wall. Her gaze kept dipping south as mis-weighted seconds ticked by, her attention split between watching the people passing by and retracing an internal argument.

Jason's flashlight was sweeping the hall up and down as he searched for Daphne. After all of that, could he still have beaten her here?

Ah - there she was, crouching. He flicked the beam of his flashlight away so as not to blind her, and walked towards her (though carefully...he was still dizzy). "Were you waiting long?" he asked, crouching next to her. He had to clear his head. Dizziness was weakness, and weakness was death.

And here he was. Kira paused outside the entryway, unsure if Hanatarou was already through or hadn't arrived yet. He might catch him if he waited either way, so he paused outside, holding onto his sword (he still needed to make a proper belt for it) and the other things he'd brought carefully.

Unwilling to let down his guard, Kira kept himself alert and looking around. If expending what little spiritual power he had left unbound was going to cause him pain, he was going to wait until it was absolutely necessary.

Hanatarou emerged from the women's block still clutching the newly-acquired sword to his chest uncertainly. It was more than a little strange to have it; he hadn't carried an ordinary sword since he'd acquired Hisagomaru and that had been...well. A long time ago.

There was also the added strangeness of not having a sheath for it - he'd have to see about figuring something out there, but in the meantime he supposed maybe he could just carry it. After all, he never knew when something might attack. Right?

It was fortunate that there wasn't something there to immediately attack, though, since as he was considering that, Hanatarou was distracted enough that he almost didn't notice Kira waiting nearby. He quickly halted to give the vice-captain a somewhat awkward bow and a nervous greeting. "Ah, good evening, um, fukutaichou. A-are you ready to, um, go?"

Now came the trickier part-- left, or right? Naoto darted her eyes in both directions, considering the options. Left would only bring her outside, recalling back on according to the maps. There was probably very little out there that would have what Naoto was looking for... which, admittedly, she didn't have a concrete idea what of, herself. But everything that was happening was being controlled from the inside, somewhere, so going out would only drive her further away from whatever would help them. Besides, going right wouldn't be stepping into unfamiliar territory, and thus it was, possibly, a slightly safer route to take.

Realizing this, the decision became clear, so Naoto turned right and continued on.

As Wonka walked down the corridor, he began to think about the design of this place - the endless stretches of blank halls, many going long distances without a single door. Was it another way to wear down the patients, he wondered? Was the Institute really using boredom as a weapon, as a way to keep people indoors and docile?

For that matter, was it coincidence that he had ended up about as far from the kitchen as a person could get in this crazy place?

[identity profile] chocomancer.livejournal.com 2009-03-07 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
He shook his head, collecting his thoughts again. Mental ramblings were a habit of his, but he needed to focus on watching his back. And anyway, the front hall was coming up. Arriving at the corner, he peeked around into the larger hallway, satisfying himself that the coast was clear. That done, he turned into the hallway, keeping his flashlight beam ahead of him at all times.

Leon ignored the few people lingering in this hall; his fussing with the grip and hang of his sword had delayed him enough that it was probable that whoever he was meeting had already arrived, so none of these people were of any use or interest to Leon at the moment.

Next hall was the beginning of the potentially dangerous areas, at least this early in the night, so Leon shifted his good hand to at least rest on the hilt of his sword, at the ready for whatever came.

He was nearly at the hall where he'd meet Peter. Harry felt like it had taken him forever to get this far, shuffling along in the dark hallways, half blind and limping. He'd narrowly avoided bumping into several people along the way, though fortunately none of them had paid him any attention.

It might have been only a few hours since he'd seen Peter about but he couldn't help worrying about him. Peter had already disappeared once without warning and while it seemed unlikely he'd vanish the same day he'd arrived it was possible. Frowning, he gripped his crutch tighter and hurried as best he could towards the next hall.

Chise opened the doors and was greeted with more absolute darkness. It was frightening, really, to walk through an unknown area that was completely pitch black. Thank god there was a flashlight in her room, otherwise she would've walked into every single wall there was in the institute.

She aimed her flashlight down the hall both ways, checking for any hostile enemies or threats. Without her ability to scan for enemy units, it was crucial that she needed to be extra wary of her surroundings, especially in an unfamiliar environment. Randomly picking a direction, she traveled down the hallway.

He couldn't recall if he'd ever been in there before. How could just a few weeks be so difficult to remember? He did look to see if his friends were in the hall as he passed. Opening the door a crack, Mele peeked around it to what seemed like another hallway. Although considering her flashlight was pressed against her body to muffle the light, she couldn't see much. She might be staring at another blank wall, for all she knew.

Mele stood there a moment, heedless of the fact that she was standing in a doorway, and considered the choices. If she swept the light across the place, it might give her away. The darkness had to mean something, if the doors systematically unlocked at the same time the overhead lights went off.

Mele gave in to caution, and clicked the flashlight off, stepping gingerly into the new hallway. She stood there and just blinked for a minute. Staring into the beam of the flashlight clearly didn't help her night vision any.

Picking up strangers to travel with might be a bit dangerous, especially considering some of the fights she'd seen break out during the day and the attitudes she'd read on the board. Seiya had walked this path with someone who was close to being a genuine enemy at her back before, though; if the telltale swish of a metal pipe came through the air, she'd just have to be quick at ducking.

That wasn't the feeling she got from the woman, anyhow. Eileen seemed nice enough, polite and not too pushy for information despite Seiya's choice of clothes. Maybe in a place like this, it wasn't really that outlandish, anyway. Or maybe in Eileen's home the clothes were stranger, or nonexistent. This reminded her a little of traveling with Leon on her own first nights out. Business talk, not casual conversation, even if she wondered privately.

"I know at least one room upstairs sometimes has knives, if it hasn't been raided out already." Seiya commented to Eileen. "It's a little far out, though. There are storage closets across the hallway upstairs, too, if you'd rather see what looks useful from those."

"Well, I have my pipe..." Eileen said. "I'm used to using something like this, really. I don't really...need a knife." She wouldn't know what to do with one, anyway. She was better at bashing things than any kind of skilled combat.

"I don't even know what would be useful. I...I mean, I'm sort of used to places like this, but not really quite like this." Which meant she wasn't going to be finding any saint medallions or swords, but since there were no ghosts she supposed that was okay.

They also couldn't just pop back to Henry's apartment when need be, either.
