Day 39: Intercom, Evening

The Head Doctor seemed a little rushed as he spoke on the intercom, not taking as much pleasure as he usually did in describing the delicious food that would soon be served.

"Hello, everyone! Tonight is turkey night, which means turkey breast in a great turkey gravy with some nice turkey sides: peas, herb potatoes, a small garden salad, and for dessert, a slice of pumpkin pie. We of course have vegetarian substitutes available, as well as our usual assortment of drinks.

"...I believe that's it! I'll talk to you soon!"

The intercom clicked off abruptly.

Naoto didn't mind having to return to her room, as the shifts prior to this had been fairly productive, at least as much as she figured they would be. There was only so much one could accomplish when you had authorities monitoring your every move; needless to say, it was very annoying. Thankfully they didn't seem to care much about what you talked about, whether it was written or by word. Strange, but what wasn't? Something was fishy about it for certain, but with Landel wholly aware of his actions and that the patient populace here wasn't crazy (most of it, anyway-- the bulletin tended to have some... interesting entries indicating otherwise), he probably didn't care enough to make the nurses and doctors do anything about it. Perhaps he reveled in it, took some sort of twisted pride how everyone talked about him; it was like a child wanting to be the center of attention. Some criminals wanted as much, Naoto knew-- the only difference between this madman of a doctor and the average man was that they all had to play in Landel's world. He was in control, here, but with the right information (and maybe some luck on their end, too), they'd take it back.

She was going to see to it in one way or another.

The meal itself looked appetizing, more so than their lunch did. It still looked like a lot, but she could have some of it before the end of the day; she'd probably need it. For now, her notebook-- already filled with several pages of notes-- was set aside. Naoto had already spent the entire day pouring her mind into it, and unfortunately anything she currently had wasn't enough to get her as far as she'd like. She needed more, however the night was approaching, so maybe she'd get it. Utena would be arriving soon, as well; the girl wanted to talk, and hopefully she could provide something Naoto didn't already have.

After Armand had left, Utena had made her way back to the Sun Room and spent the rest of her time combing over the bulletin for as long as her nurse would let her. She made as many hasty notes as she could in the time she had, knowing that the nurse didn't approve of her spending so much time at the board. As she had thought before, it almost felt like she was trying to cram for an important test on the night before, in a way.

By the time she was herded back to her room, Utena had filled a few more pages in her notebook, and her hand was on the verge of cramping. "Hey," she said to Naoto with a soft smile as she entered the room and the door was shut behind her. She made her way over to the bed and took the plate of turkey in hand. "So this isn't Ohtori or Inaba, that much we know for sure," she joked, trying to keep in as light a mood as she could before night fell and she would have to deal with finding out what had happened to Himemiya. "Did you get very far after we split up last night?"

"So it isn't," Naoto responded, not quite grasping the joking manner Utena relayed. It was a rather obvious statement; she didn't need to rub in the fact her first assumptions were far from correct, no matter how much she couldn't be blamed for thinking so.

No matter. It was silly to feel even a little irritated about that, since there was no way to know otherwise. "By some," Naoto answered, staring down at her food more than actually eating it. "I accompanied someone else and received some information from them. When he was finished, we parted ways, although I admit the night didn't last very long afterwards." She still wasn't sure where she needed to go this night, either, but as long as she kept moving she'd be able to cover more. "How about you or your friend?"

Utena was disappointed that Naoto didn't seem to appreciate her light-hearted comment, but tried not to show it. "Definitely not as far as you got. We really just stayed in that hallway since I couldn't convince her that I was really me. She thought I was one of those shapeshifting creatures that apparently sometimes appear. Then at one point, we had to move back into the patient block to get away from a fight that was going on," she explained. "Thankfully, I think I managed to convince her on the boards today. She's coming here once the doors open so we can straighten things out."

She stopped for a moment to eat some more of her turkey, which was quite a bit more preferable to the pizza from lunch. "I got lots of other information from the boards and other patients today, too. I'm guessing you did pretty much the same?" she asked.

So they ended up lingering behind. It was a good thing Naoto had decided to move on then, but something did seem wrong about Himemiya when she first passed by them; maybe she wasn't in any condition to wander on further at all. Naoto could understand staying behind for her safety, if that were the case.

"Fair enough. I hope you do, then." With a nod, Naoto gestured to her notebook, still sitting untouched for the time being, on the desk beside her tray. "Yes, I did. I copied down anything that looked to be of any importance at all. I intend to do the same next time we're able to access it."

Utena wasn't sure what to expect once her friend did arrive. Sure, Himemiya would beleive that she was real now, but there was obviously a lot of other damage that had been done that had ravaged the girl's personality, it seemed. What exactly would she find out, if Himemiya was willing to share it at all?

She lifted up her own notebook after Naoto pointed to hers, though she didn't open it up yet. "Same here. I don't usually write so much, but it feels like there's so much to learn that I'll forget all the important bits if I don't keep track of it in some way. Your notes are probably a lot better than mine, since you'd be used to writing more than me," she said with soft laugh. "I think the only thing I learned that wasn't also on the board was from a man named Armand. He said that he's looking to put together some sort of organized item courier service that'll work mostly outside the bulletins, so keep an ear out for that in the near future, I guess."

Using a journal to store all her information wasn't a method Naoto used much-- she trusted her mind enough, and all her jobs were with the police force anyway. They were the ones who kept everything to know on a case, all there for her to access when needed... so long as she was still in the investigation team at the time. But that didn't mean Naoto couldn't do it, and she had no opinion on whether Utena thought she was a better note taker or not. "If you want to take a look, then by all means, you're welcome to it," she offered. "I don't intend to keep any of this to myself."

Curiously, she looked up towards the other girl in interest. "A courier service?" Naoto echoed. "I've read mentions of others needing to gather certain materials in order to create something with it-- weapons, mainly. Is it in relation to that?"

"Thanks for the offer. I might have a look sometime tomorrow. I don't think my hand's up for writing down anything else right now," Utena said with an embarrassed chuckle, holding up her right hand and bending it back and forth to indicate the soreness there.

Utena tilted her head, trying to think. "I suppose it could include that. Couriers could probably deliver finished weapons to people from the alchemists or the clubs. But I think he said it would include general stuff too, sort of like R's item finding service only with a group instead of just one person. He said that he mainly wanted to start it so that people who don't have so much physical skill can still contribute something to everyone's efforts while staying safe," she explained as best she could, though it was hard considering Armand hadn't given her many specific details.

"Very well," Naoto replied, a hint of amusement in her voice. That was something she would've expected to hear from one of their group study sessions back home after school. She definitely wouldn't have called all of them the most diligent students out there with some of the things that came up during them. "I'll likely have more by then."

She then listened to the idea, one that, she had to say, sounded like a helpful one. As if she were approving the idea, Naoto gave a slight nod once Utena finished. "I believe something like that could work, if only to make our routines and nightly missions follow through that much more faster. Time is something that cannot be wasted here."
