Nightshift 38: West Wing, South Hall 1-B

[From here]

Ophelia carefully opened the door, listening and looking around in both directions for any signs of monster activity. When she was satisfied that there was none that she could detect, she swung the door open and hurried down toward the main hall where more of the moonlight could be seen faintly. Once she got there, she knew she was definitely going to have to keep her guard up, considering that the main hall had been where the big monster from the previous night had been.

Yep, these were women's rooms. If he had to guess, the room sections would be laid out in a square. There'd be another couple sections alongside these, right? Right.

Hoping he was on the right track and not getting hopelessly lost, Teisel picked up his pace a little.

And here it was. Armand couldn't even quite remember why this had been the compromise meeting place, but he was used to finding it himself in the dark by now. The door to the woman's block was just across the hall, and he knew he could wait here in relative safety if he kept quiet and the others hurried. He leaned against the wall and started rehearsing his apologies to TK in his mind.

[identity profile] loyal-soldier.livejournal.com 2009-01-26 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
TK found his way to the usual meeting spot, looking around. It was a relief to find Armand already there. At least he was where he was supposed to be tonight. He made sure not to sneak up on the other man, lowering his glowrod so that the light wouldn't get in Armand's eyes. "Hey," He said, unsure of what else he really could say. He didn't want to get Armand upset by asking a question he didn't want to answer, but with how the other man acted some times, he had no idea what a safe question might be.

Still mostly quiet. Which was a relief, as every noise was an order of magnitude or three louder with a headache. Pity you couldn't package that effect -- would save money on Walkman batteries. Cut way down on mercury contamination of groundwater, too.

The question was, of course, where to go first. Not to the boys' rooms, of course. Not this time. But Elena was in a habitual pattern, and while debating on where to go, her body kind of naturally headed in the direction she was used to moving in. She kind of glanced around for other patients, but her main focus was simply thinking.

She moved her flashlight back and forth down the hallway. Hmm, everything seemed to be clear. For now, anyway. She moved along the same route she had gone last night. She'd never reached the lab, but she'd already looked over the map plenty enough times to memorize the way.

If Mr. J were here, would he go off to a room by himself, knowing what might be lurking there? ...No, he probably wouldn't. The boss was a genius. Strategically, it'd be disadvantageous to head off by oneself. He'd probably be sure to recruit a person or two. He wasn't one of those muscle-brained morons who were too busy trying to save face and prove a point to realize you can't do certain things alone.

Her puddin' would never admit it, but he knew he needed her and the rest of the gang just as much as they needed him. That was why it worked. That's why he'd become a forced to be reckoned with. He knew the score and how to deal with it.

She sighed to herself. Harley was only going to make herself miss him all over again... She couldn't think about that! She couldn't! She had to focus! After she got her babies, they'd bust out of there and see her darling sweetheart right afterward.

Dark hall was still dark, night vision was still crap. Check. Evangeline had brought her flashlight this time, but she didn't plan on using it unless she absolutely had to. She still thought that a vampire using a flashlight was just dumb, and from a practical perspective the flashlight had a severe limitation in that it could only illuminate so much of your surroundings, but it made your own position obvious. Not something you wanted to use in a hostile environment unless you were already at a severe disadvantage, stealth-wise.

No, she'd get along just fine. Assuming they didn't move furniture around for the night, anyway.

Scar glanced around at the sound of a few footsteps, but concluded they were mere patients. From what he had collected the monsters usually didn't appear this early around the patient blocks, but it would be wise to still remain on his guard.

As far as she could tell, this hall was entirely empty, but that didn't make Ayumu any less cautious as she made her way south, heading for the larger hallway that connected the patient blocks. Despite his best efforts, Leon could tell that the wounds on his back had opened up again--the cuts from that bird thing were deep, and the stitches the nurses put in hadn't been intended to hold up under this kind of exertion. The mention of new patients arriving caused Leon to pause for a moment just outside the female block. It was a long-shot, but... what if Rena had been brought there? Or Celine? Precis had been there before, so maybe she would return as well?

It seemed as though everyone was disappearing around him. The chances of more showing up just didn't seem that high. Checking for just a few moments couldn't hurt though...

Now on her own, maybe her investigation on this matter would be easier to work on. It wasn't always the case that being on your own was best, but right now Naoto wasn't sure if Utena would be able to keep up or stick to the matters the detective wanted to pay the most mind to.

The beginning was always the toughest; when you had little to draw on and the evidence was next to none, it took a lot of work to figure out the truth behind things. And right now, Naoto didn't even know where to begin trying to find either of those two... But that would hardly stop her-- she had a duty to fulfill. Something she could use had to be around here somewhere, and Naoto was going to make sure she found it.

For a moment, Naoto looked off to the side, paying more mind to the activity going on around her than what was in her path. When she finally did turn back forward, suddenly she found herself only inches away from another boy before she would have walked right into him. "O- oh, excuse me," Naoto apologized, stepping back to make space between them once again. "I hadn't been paying attention to where I was going."

It felt just a little like he was going in circles as Tony headed north again, up toward the cell block that lay directly parallel to the one he was housed in. It was tempting to hurry, just because he was nearing his first destination for the night, and limited visibility be damned.

There were more people here, coming and going, including a man in old-fashioned clothes leaning against a wall in the dark. Maybe it was a convention hall where the power had gone. Juri had heard of such things even though she'd never been to one. She was too busy with school and modeling and fencing. There were more people in the shapeless gray outfits, which had a happy face on the front. Disgusted, Juri looked down at hers to find the same inane design. She'd rather have the wool coat and boots the man she passed wore.

One end of the hallway ended in a closed door. The other was open, so she headed toward the open area, still hoping that the way out would show itself in some obvious way. So far, she didn't have a good opinion of whatever this place was.

The next hall wasn't any more crowded than the last, but there was one thing Naoto noticed: the people all acted as if there was an objective in mind, places they knew they needed to go; there wasn't anyone wandering aimlessly, it seemed, and everyone minded their own business, disrupting no one who was associated with them.

Even more interesting.

Naoto looked down one end of this new hallway, then to the other end. There still weren't any giveaways to anything, so who knew which way would lead to what? "Any recommedations?" Naoto asked, idly stepping further through the doorway. "I don't think it will matter which way we choose first. We can always backtrack if necessary.

Utena could have sworn she caught sight of a flash of orange hair running away into the night, but it went away so quickly that she could only attribute it to an overactive imagination. She looked around at all the people in the hall, both those standing around and those who looked to be on the move. Everyone but them seemed to know what they were doing, where they were going. It was certainly a little frustrating being the odd ones out like this. If things kept going the way they were, Utena was decided that she was definitely going to interrupt somebody and ask just what the hell was happening.

"I have no idea. Both halls look mostly the same to me," Utena said worriedly, turning her light back and forth down the two directions before them. From where they were, she could make out a door in one direction and an intersection to another hall in the other direction. Neither one struck her as better to take than the other. "Maybe we should watch for a little bit and see which way more people are headed, then follow them," she suggested.

Hmm... Now here's where she needed to make a decision. Did she want to go left? Or did she want to go right? The Ranger tapped a finger against her chin, looking one way and then the other, then back again. What to do, what to do? Well! When all else failed...

"Eenie, meenie, miney, moe." It was probably a silly thing to do, but hey! At least she didn't have to wait long for an answer that way!

Grinning behind her mask, Kimberly did another quick sweep of the hall and then moved on.
