Night 37: Main Hall 2-West

[from here]

Coming to a cross hallway, Falis stopped and knelt down again. In the darkness, she couldn't see where the hallway lead, nothing more than a few feet immediately in front of her. Unbeknown to her, the stairs she needed to go down to the first level were just to the right. Falis had the same feeling as she had back at that dead end, so she didn't think there was anything down that hallway.

Seeing some very faint light to the left, the hunter headed that way. Once she found light, she could get her bearings.

Pragmatically, perhaps it was better that Tsubaki led them out onto the second floor if Superboy didn‘t know where they were going anymore than she did. She still had to hope he wasn’t going to start messing with her a second time, though.

Taking a left once in the hallway, she shone her flashlight around cautiously before turning it off and slipping it back inside the bag. The therapy corridor was supposed to only be one over from their current position; she felt a little bit safer if she kept one hand free and relied less on the light the flashlights provided.

As for her uniform, she wasn’t sure ‘amazing’ was the word she’d use… The details of how she’d gotten her clothes back were something she didn’t have a clue about, however. “I don’t know, it was in my closet by the time I was brought to dinner. The nurses didn’t say anything about it. Some other people seem to have their clothes back, too, but I’m not sure why.” She looked back, debating whether to ask her own question or not. “Do you mind… is ‘Superboy’ your name or your title?”

"Superboy is my name, why do you ask?" It was a strange question, Superboy didn't sound like any kind of title he could think of. Unless Tsubaki was some sort of alien - or knew aliens - who had titles like that. It wasn't like it was uncommon to find aliens on earth and he didn't personally know any aliens apart from Superman and the Legion but they were also from the future. Maybe there were species who had titles like that. Or it could be possible she just wasn't familiar with superheroes. He knew there were worlds out there without them but it was such a hard idea to come to terms with.

As soon as they were clear of the staircase Kon was hurrying to catch up with Tsubaki again. He was itching to see some action now that he had the opportunity. A good fight would also let him see how much of his TTK was back and help him let off the stress of being unable to fly.

"Do you know what sort of experiments they run up here?" Who knew what state the people that had been taken would be in. The closest Kon had come to being experimented on - besides when he was made - was when the Agenda had kidnapped him so they could clone him. He'd been unconscious for whatever they did to him so he didn't have any idea what to expect when they arrived.

She shook her head quickly. If that was his given name, she wasn’t about to question him on it, and it wasn’t as though it were the strangest name she’d ever heard before. 'Super' and 'boy' just sounded a bit odd together before you got used to it, she supposed. "No reason. I always thought… heroes might have more than one name or have titles. Because they’re legendary and all." At least that was what she thought of at the word ‘hero’, like Excalibur the Holy Sword and his stories.

But she didn’t know many flesh and blood ‘heroes’, did she? They felt more mythical than real.

At the second question, Tsubaki had to shake her head again, for a different reason. Her voice was quieter. "No, I’m not sure. I got the impression it’s different for everybody." There had been that one bulletin note that day, talking about the "sleep studies." All of the answers had seemed so reluctant and forced. The one common opinion was that it had changed them irreparably.

It bothered her to think about. Had Hikaru and Kaoru, and the others she’d met…?

"When it’s against their will, it can’t be good." It has to be stopped somehow. And if that wasn't possible, then, well...

Kon grinned proudly at Tsubaki, replying "I dunno if I could be called legendary just yet. But I'm sure on my way there." He wasn't sure he'd want to be considered legendary while he was still alive. Made him think of when he'd been helping the Legion in the 30th century. When they'd been trying to rescue that guy Valor and how it seemed like the whole world viewed him as some sort of saviour with how crazy they went over him. That sort of thing would be great when you were gone but being treated like that while you were still alive sounded like way too much to deal with. Kon was happy with being famous. Other people could aim for legendary.

This time Kon could wrap his arm around Tsubaki properly, squeezing her as he said "Don't worry babe. We'll bust them out of there before the sickos in charge can lay a finger on them." Whoever was responsible was seriously going to regret ever messing with anybody once they were through with them.

He should totally be paying more attention to his surroundings while he was up here too. He couldn't see any signs of a third floor to this place so the head doctor had to be somewhere on this level. Ah, first things first. Rescue the people being experimented on then figure out his next move. He'd always thought better on his feet and now no one could say they didn't actually touch the ground.

Again, she was reminded of Black☆Star at that grin. Like it said ‘I can do it anything!’ or ‘I’m the best hero of all!’ In an unexpected way, it was almost reassuring. It was quite the coincidence she’d run into the one who’d been making those embarrassing comments on the bulletin, but even after following her up the stairs and proving he was a little overly friendly, maybe they could work together… Tsubaki started to give a genuine smile back--

--And then Superboy’s arm was around her, and it faltered and died.

She made a small noise that might have passed for a flat, nervous laugh at the comment, or maybe it was the squeeze that temporarily pressed her bare shoulder closer against him, before she was subtly slipping out of his hold like she were practicing escaping from a rope binding.

There were plenty of differences between this boy and Black☆Star. For one, her partner was nowhere near tall enough to be able to do that. And he never called her ‘babe’. No one did. Thankfully.

“I-I’m not worried,” Tsubaki replied, now smiling benignly.

Laughing as Tsubaki twisted easily out of his hold, Kon asked playfully "What's wrong gorgeous? I thought you said you liked forward guys?" He was well aware that was the most liberal interpretation possible of her notes on the board but she had been the one to respond to his message in the first place and to set up a meeting. If she didn't want to see him somewhere underneath the denial she would never have told him her name over the board let alone stuck around now. The fact that he hadn't given her a choice in the latter didn't occur to him.

"What say when we're done with the rescue mission we find some place private so I can show you what I meant earlier about sharing my experience?" If any of Young Justice were here with him Kon would be heading for a beating or a taser but Tsubaki had yet to even snap at him. So he liked testing boundaries, it wasn't a bad thing. More of a 'boldly go where no man has gone before' sort of attitude. That seemed doubly true in Tsubaki's case now that he thought about it. Which made things way more fun.

She turned more fully, holding up a hand as though to forestall any more touching or talking. “You’re too flattering,” Tsubaki tried, in an attempt to stop more ‘compliments’ from flying her way. “And I’m sure I never said that.”

In fact, she didn’t particularly like or dislike any kind of guy, for the sole reason that even when she wasn’t in a situation where she was all alone without her technician, or other Shibusen students, or her own weapon forms, she didn’t think much about romance. Liz had tried once or twice to get her to join in on ‘hunk hunting’, but… There were other things to do. It must’ve been nice for Superboy if he had the time for that; she didn’t consider it the same for her.

Not to mention, this was the worst possible time to be flirting with someone. She was glad the darkness would hide most of her uncomfortable flush.

“Let’s say we stay focussed on the first part for now,” she said, then switched gears. “That’s right, I should thank you for wanting to come. You didn’t have to.”

Kon moved closer to lean against Tsubaki's raised hand, saying "It's my duty as a hero to help those in need. And there's no way I couldn't want to keep a girl like you company, no matter what the circumstances are."

Fun aside, she was right. They needed to hurry and stop those experiments before anyone was hurt. Accepting her chastisement with a nod and a rueful smile he said, "Yeah, you're right. Focus on the job and you can thank me later." Winking he continued, "I'm sure we can manage to keep our hands off each other for that long."

It helped that he knew how it felt to have people trying to experiment on you without giving you any say in the matter. All he had to do was remember when he'd broken out of CADMUS shortly after his creation and there went the urge to continue teasing Tsubaki. He'd have plenty of opportunities to have fun later.

Diversion tactics: success.

After so long with Black☆Star, providing distractions was almost second nature, unfortunately. She sighed on the inside. Had Superboy even been paying attention all this time? Either he was so skilled he could split his attention between the dark hallways and her, or… he’d just been determined to bug her.

Thank him later? Right… She didn’t like the sound of that.

Dropping her hand and readjusting the other’s hold around the makeshift bag, she turned back to the mouth of the hallway they were approaching, pausing at the corner of the nurse’s station. “It should be the second door,” Tsubaki said, lowering her voice. She pointed.

Back to the mission.
