Day 37: Intercom, Evening

"And I believe it's time to start wrapping up the day," was what the Head Doctor said after the intercom's initial jingle. "Now that everyone's all cleaned up, I think it's time for some... that's right, dinner!

"Tonight, we're serving some scrumptuous rotisserie herb chicken, seasoned with rosemary, lemon juice, and other delicious seasonings. On the side, we have cooked asparagus with bits of grilled onion, as well as small roasted potatoes with garlic and butter; for dessert, we'll be serving vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup on top. Our normal assorted drinks and specialized diet alternatives are available.

"Some of you might find that you have new roommates since your old ones were fortunate enough to recover and leave us. Hopefully, you'll be able to see them again the next time we have visitors if you wish, but in the meantime please treat your new bunkmates kindly.

"I believe that's all for now. I hope you had a wonderful day and that you have a delicious dinner! ...Well, you'll definitely be having a delicious dinner, but there's nothing surprising about that, is there? Hahaha..."

With a seemingly good-natured chuckle, the Head Doctor turned off his mic.

Bridget smiled and thanked his nurse for cutting up his food for him before he sat down. Roger was sitting on the desk, looking smart in his new vest. He couldn't help but feel almost ... giddy. Kagura had made that. She'd thought of Roger (which meant she'd thought of him too, right?) and made that with her hands.

He tried to focus on his food, but he gaze still occasionally went to the vert with it's plastic buttons.

Today was a... Maybe it was best to leave the sentence at that. Right now, he had to figure out how to transport a pillowcase full of food to Adelheid's room and make it to F35 without issues. It wouldn't be easy to do without suspicion, especially since Yukari was also supposedly picking up her bow there tonight.

Good thing there was no way she could know that the virgin topic involved her. Alita wouldn't betray him, not when she expected payment.

He quickly made his way to M85. To his surprise, there sat Bridget, eating his dinner. They hadn't spoken in some time, had they? "Uh, hello," Ken greeted.

Oh! That's right. He did have a roommate didn't he? Bridget was usually taking the time to nap after his meal and so didn't really talk to Ken much. "Hi there," he chirped. "Sorry to be such a dull roommate." Taking a drink of his juice, he turned in his chair to better face the other boy.

"How are you doing? Have your nights been going well?"

"It's alright," Ken answered, smiling politely. "Usually I'm too busy getting ready for the night to talk myself." Plus, dinner was the best time for sleep; he couldn't blame Bridget for catching a wink or two.

With the conversation underway, the boy moved to his own desk and chair. He tried not to sigh at the dish, even if there was no rice. "I've been doing okay," he said. He wasn't injured or dying, at least. "Nights could be better, but you know how they are. How about you?"

"I'm doing great," Bridget said. He held up his right arm, wrapped in bandages and gauze from wrist to just above his elbow. "See? I'll bet soon I won't even need the bandages. And," here he moved his left hand, though the arm, still wrapped tightly and strapped to his chest, remained right where it was. "I'm even getting feeling back too."

He was thrilled by this and it showed.

Ken, who hadn't quite noticed the injuries until Bridget indicated to them, looked rather shocked at the sight. No wonder his roommate had been resting up 'til now! "What happened?" he blurted out before he could regain the sense to stop himself.

Bridget blushed and looked away, embarrassed. "I wanted to see what was over the wall. There was a pack of decomposing dogs." He laughed and looked back up, shrugging one shoulder. "I guess they didn't like me jumping right into the middle of them, huh? Tried to take off my left arm, but the person I was with and I managed to beat them off before either of us lost any limbs permanently."

The boy nearly sighed in relief. In his item farming, he had almost forgotten threats here could come in any form, aside from the occasional Special Counseling patient and man-eating demon. "I'm glad both of you got away." There was an irrational sense of guilt along with the words, as if Ken knew something could have been done to prevent the damage. "If there's anything I could do, Bridget-san, please don't hesitate to let me know."

He paused to glance down at his plate. Something else in Bridget's account caught his attention. "Though, you said you went over the wall. Does that mean you made it outside of the hospital?" asked Ken.

Bridget nodded, smiling again as he finished his meal and picked up Roger. "Yup! We made it all the way to this ... place. I think it used to be a town." It looked like some of the towns back home...

"But, no matter how far we went, we always woke up here again." Sitting on the bed and setting Roger in his lap, the bounty hunter made a face. "I feel bad, but I'm kind of glad I didn't die out there."

A town? It didn't sound like Doyleton. For one, it was too far away. For another, Doyleton was still a viable community. So unless nights changed that, they'd probably come across someplace else entirely. That meant it was now possible to move a good deal beyond the wall.

But Ken had to agree: better for his roommate to be dragged back to the hospital than left bleeding out there. Disheartening as the fact was. "Guess the Head Doctor's influence goes outside of the grounds," he remarked.
