Nightshift 34: West Wing, North Hallway 1-A

[From Here]

Passing through the open doorway, he flashed his light around to make certain that there was nothing potentially dangerous lurking in the hallway. It seemed clear as far as his eyes could tell, so he hurried on. Well, he hurried as much as an old man like himself with things to do would hurry. There was no point in running, as he would save such activities for if he was being chased.

He hoped that Yuuri would be alright making it to the Recreational Field by himself. The youth seemed good-hearted even if a little absentminded. The boy would be fine, he told himself.

When the door had swung shut behind them, Rose ground immediately to a halt. She was bursting with questions, not the least of which was where the hell they were, but much more important was the simple fact that the Doctor was standing next to her. Completely alive, and even the same regeneration. Donna had been right.

Everything had become very hectic as soon as he'd shown up, without much time for her to process things and hardly any light to see by. But it never occurred to her that it might be some other bloke with a complex about saving girls in distress. She knew what the Doctor's hand felt like in hers, and she knew exactly what the word 'run' sounded like in his voice. It was him.

She grinned up at him, because she couldn't hide how thrilled she was to see him again, and threw her arms around his shoulders.

The short time it had taken to run indoors was all it took to convince the Doctor that the girl really was Rose. There was no doubt about it; Rose Tyler, the girl that he'd thought he'd never see again, was now standing before him, here, in this "Landel's Institute."

"Rose Tyler," he said, grinning at her. "It's good to see you."

The Doctor wrapped his arms around her, returning her hug. He had questions: about how she had gotten here; about whether or not she'd crossed over from Pete's world; about when exactly she was from in their timeline together. But all those questions could wait for a while. What was most important right now was that she was here.

Rose buried her face in the Doctor's shoulder for a long moment. Finally, she pulled out of the hug and smiled at him again.

"That's a new look for you," she joked, trying to hide the fact that she was feeling a little sniffly with relief. And it was very weird seeing him in something other than a suit. "They steal your clothing, too?"

When Rose pulled away, the Doctor followed suit, slipping his hands into his pockets.

"What? Oh— the clothes! Yes, my suit and coat and trainers were all missing when I woke up, and I was wearing this uniform." He looked down at the offending garments, and then at Rose, grinning. "The grey's a bit dull, but I rather like the face. Very friendly, don't you think? Of course, the dressing gown leaves something to be desired... I wouldn't mind finding my coat." Or his sonic screwdriver. Or the TARDIS. Or the TARDIS key.

"But what about you!" he said suddenly, shifting gears. "I see you're in uniform, too; how did you manage to end up here?"

Kenshin had said that no one knew how they'd arrived, but it never hurt to ask.

The clothing comments got a laugh out of Rose. He did love that coat, didn't he?

"Dunno," she responded to his question, shrugging. "Last I knew, Zach knocked me out 'cause..." She eyed him sideways. "I didn't want to leave you. But he wouldn't let me stay; he injected me with... something. Anyway, out cold, then I wake up here!"

If anyone could answer the question that had been nagging her all day, it was the Doctor. "So come on, where is here?"

"Zach?" the Doctor parroted. Had he known a Zach? "Zach, Zach— OH! Zach! From that place! The one with the Ood and the pit, and..." He trailed off, looking away. After a significant pause, he finished, "And Satan."

He looked at Rose again. "Right. Where we are. That's an excellent question," he said. "It's an excellent question, and one that I... really don't have a good answer to."

The Doctor frowned. "Best I've got is somewhere in America, in the 2000's. And... possibly in another dimension."

He really didn't like that last bit.

"Yeah, the Beast," she mumbled quietly. "And yes, that Zach!" Had he really forgotten in that short a time? Or was he from the future, like Donna? A future Rose wasn't in. "Oh, there's this woman here, says she knows you." Rose raised a hand to her ear, only to realize she didn't have an earring to readjust. "Donna?" she asked hesitantly, in case he hadn't met Donna yet, or the mention of Donna's name made him spring some really bad news. Like about that whole 'die in battle' thing.

As for where they were... "It's not the one with zeppelins, I already asked." So neither of them knew where they were. Nothing new there. She smiled and grabbed his hand again. "But we'll figure it out, yeah?"

The Doctor grinned suddenly, recovering from the sobering thought of the Beast and the fact that he really didn't know exactly where they were. "Oh, you met Donna already, did you?" he asked, chipper again. "Well, with the three of us around, this whole 'where and when are we?' mystery will be solved in no time! I always love a good mystery... And besides, it's more fun not to know everything right from the start! Gives us something to do, to figure out."

All they had to do was figure it out and set things right. That was how it always went, and this time would be no different... Except for the fact that Donna and Rose were with him again, after he'd said goodbye to them both. Once they had set things right, then what? He'd have to send them back to their proper times, say goodbye to them again.

His smile faltered, but he quickly brightened up, giving Rose's hand a brief squeeze. "Yeah. We'll figure it out," he reaffirmed. "And we'll figure out what Martin Landel is up to."

If he didn't want to explain about Donna, Rose wasn't gonna pressure him into it. At least not for now. Of course, if they found a way out tonight, they'd have to come back for Donna. Rose inwardly kicked herself for not setting up a meeting with the other woman.

Her smile faded when she saw a pained expression cross the Doctor's face. But when whatever he was thinking about passed, she grinned up at him again.

"So where do we start?" she asked. "Go looking for Landel, or...?"

"We'll— We'll go looking," he said, looking out into the dark hallway. "For the TARDIS, mainly— We need to find it; that TARDIS is our best way out of here. But if we find Landel first, that—"

He paused for a moment. Looking back at Rose, he asked, "Have you learned anything about this 'Martin Landel' since you arrived? I'd hate to find him and not realize who he is."

It was possible that either of them had already met the man, if he was masquerading as a patient, but— It seemed unlikely enough, but one could never be too sure of these sorts of things. The Doctor didn't know nearly enough about the man to say whether Martin Landel was the sort to lord over his domain from on high or to delight in its workings in secret from a more intimate position.

"Nope." Rose shook her head. "I met this guy Fox, he told me a lot but he didn't seem to know anything about Landel. Very mysterious."

"So come on then," she urged, smirking up at the Doctor and giving his hand a gentle tug before heading for the door. "Let's go find the TARDIS."

A thought struck her. There was something she should be remembering... "Ooh, there's was this... um... like a map. On that bulletin board thing. There was something about a possessions room? Probably too obvious, but they could be keeping the TARDIS in there." Rose tried to remember any other details from the map, but she'd only glanced at it quickly. After all, she'd been pretty sure that once she'd found the Doctor they'd be gone.

"Quite," the Doctor agreed. He'd need to find out everything he could about Martin Landel. Where there was a mystery, there was usually a reason.

He fell into step next to Rose. "Possessions room? Way too obvious— The odds of having landed there are astronomical! And moving the TARDIS there? Well..."

He trailed off, looking at Rose with a grin. "Let's have a look! Allons-y!"
