Nightshift 33: M21-M30 Hallway

[from dinner post]

... the doctor sounded tired. Shawn wasn't sure if he preferred that voice or the more youthful one in the second announcement but either way, he figured, this guy's still fucking nuts.

Talk about Sci-Fi gone wrong. Gus would've loved this, even if Shawn knew the other wouldn't have been able to stop shaking in his slippers long enough to go into full dweeb mode. Shawn committed both announcements to memory-- just because authenticity sounded verified, it didn't mean he could trust anything that was being said especially when it involved so-called advanced technology, a "shield", and some kind of super hacker. Hackers, honestly. If the act didn't involve Angelina Jolie in any way Shawn just wasn't interested.

He held pushed at the prematurely opened door, looking out into the dark hallway warily. Pulling back in, he cast an almost-cautious grin at Peter. "After you...?"

Like he was going to go out there first. Yeah. Right.

"Understood, sir," she said, voice emotionless. Inside, though, she was torn. She respected Captain Hitsugaya - maybe even feared him a little - and did not want to disappoint him. At the same time, though, this was not Soul Society and... none of what they did seemed to be doing any good. Rukia couldn't help but feel as though all their efforts were in vain.

As for why she wanted to investigate the file room... Her answer was not one the Captain would want to hear. Why had she asked him if she could go there in the first place?? She was desperate, yes, but that was no reason to behave so rashly. A few seconds passed before she could think of anything to say. "I- wanted to learn the fake names of some of the prisoners here. I thought it might be useful..." It was a lame excuse, and she knew it, but it was better than saying, I need to find out where my brother is, and see that drawing again.

Had Hitsugaya known how she was feeling, he might have said something more. He could tell she wasn't entirely happy with the situation, but no one was when they were being reprimanded. Hopefully a reprimand would be enough.

Still, something about the reasonings for wanting to check out the file room didn't seem quite right. Odds were she had some other reason she needed to check out the file room. Still, if it would help boost her morale, he could spare the team for a night. He couldn't afford to lose another Shinigami, and he didn't trust her to have the mental fortitude to continue in her duties despite problems, like Renji could.

"Alright then," Hitsugaya said. "Go ahead and take your team to the file room. If you have the time afterwards, it sounds like the walls might be scalable tonight. See if you can get out. Dismissed."

Rukia looked up, shock evident on her face. He was actually letting her go to the file room?? She recovered quickly, though. "Tha- Yes, sir."

Bowing, she turned and made her way back down the hallway. Hopefully her light would last until she met with Allen and Rinali.

Artemis ran along the hallways, sword lightly slapping against his leg, geared up for the coming night. He'd spent too much time with Haku again, and now he was most definitely late to his meeting with the Captain. Although, whether or not he actually wanted to go on whatever death-defying scheme Hitsugaya had in store for him.

But if he didn't show up, the Captain's wrath might be even worse...

"I'm sorry, Captain. I had a few personal details to work out before I came," He smiled pleasantly. "So, what trouble are we getting into tonight?"

Hitsugaya had grown concerned about Artemis's absence when there he came trotting along. He inwardly breathed a sigh of relief. A few minutes longer and he would have had to go check up on the boy, for fear they'd taken him off to MU. He held up the radio with a sly grin. "Up for a little wall scaling?"

He assumed the boy heard the radio announcement about scaling the walls. Fowl always seemed overly interested in what the radio had to say.

Artemis raised his eyebrows, somewhat in disbelief. Was the Captain... actually listening to what the radio and intercom said? Call the New York Times!

The boy returned the grin with one of his own. "I'll follow your lead, Captain. Let's see what's over that wall, shall we?"

Hitsugaya returned the eyebrow raise with a raise of his own. He was tempted to ask him what exactly the issue was, but decided against it. He tied the radio to his belt and, with flashlight in hand, stepped out into the hallway. "Let's take the greenhouse wall. Less likely to be people trying that way."

Artemis nodded, "Excellent plan, Captain. I would also rationalize that most people are trying to go over through the Recreational Field. Or Courtyard if they are particularly masochistic." He smiled lightly at the image.

"Lead the way. Do you suppose we'll need anything before embarking on the climb?"

Hitsugaya shook his head. "We should be fine. I have the radio on me, we have flashlights and are armed. With just the two of us, we should be light and fast and have no problem avoiding the worst that's out there. Let's go."

He turned and proceeded out into the darkness.
