Nightshift 33: M21-M30 Hallway

[from dinner post]

... the doctor sounded tired. Shawn wasn't sure if he preferred that voice or the more youthful one in the second announcement but either way, he figured, this guy's still fucking nuts.

Talk about Sci-Fi gone wrong. Gus would've loved this, even if Shawn knew the other wouldn't have been able to stop shaking in his slippers long enough to go into full dweeb mode. Shawn committed both announcements to memory-- just because authenticity sounded verified, it didn't mean he could trust anything that was being said especially when it involved so-called advanced technology, a "shield", and some kind of super hacker. Hackers, honestly. If the act didn't involve Angelina Jolie in any way Shawn just wasn't interested.

He held pushed at the prematurely opened door, looking out into the dark hallway warily. Pulling back in, he cast an almost-cautious grin at Peter. "After you...?"

Like he was going to go out there first. Yeah. Right.

"I know you can't ask me to do it, that's why I told you how I feel. I know that Tamaki's been hurt enough, but how can you expect me to stay and protect him when you're going to be going after the same person? Something tells me that, even if I wanted to, he'd expect me to look after you." Tamaki seemed like that kind of person, anyway. Not that Adelheid had spent as much time with him recently, but... some things didn't necessarily change. And Tamaki had been one of the first to hear his story out.

Fuck. Ed thought about that for a moment before having to concede the point that Tamaki would probably want Adel to stay with Ed and look after him, even though he was entirely capable of taking care of himself. Sometimes. And he knew Tamaki would be in the clinic, with other people, and wasn't likely to trust someone like Envy again. But at the same time, the thought of dragged Adel in Ed's mess was not a good one.

He eyed Adel warily. "You're entirely too logical," he muttered under his breath before sighing and nodding. "Fine. It'd be boring going on my own anyway."

That quip earned an amused look from Adelheid. In the right circumstances, he wasn't logical at all... but when it came to protecting someone else, he'd do everything he could to ensure their safety. Normally that had only applied to Rose, but... he found himself wanting to make sure Edward would come back. The thought of losing someone else to this place, when they'd been through so much together? No, he wouldn't entertain it. Nor would he let Tamaki suffer more than he already had.

"Perhaps you aren't logical enough. Regardless, I'll let you lead the way; you're lucky that I don't have any plans for tonight."

Ed gave him a grumpy look in return, but in truth, he did feel glad to have Adel going with him because, well, he didn't want to die again. And he wanted to know that if something happened, Adel would know who to look out for and what he was up against. Not that Adel couldn't take care of himself. He'd made that abundantly clear.

"If I was logical, I would never have tried some of the things I did." Or maybe he was too logical when it came to alchemy.

And now came the part that Ed hadn't really thought through. He had no idea where to actually find Envy. He wondered if Lust knew, but he didn't know her room either "Maybe if I'm quick we should go to the kitchen."

"Hm, I suppose that that might be true. Though logic isn't the only thing in the world... some techniques make no sense, and some odds which seemed insurmountable have been overcome. So I try not to be too bound by simple understanding." It might have sounded a little arrogant, but Adelheid believed in that. After seeing demons, magic, and everything else, he never felt like logic could understand everything. No, only his family's unique abilities could do that.

Regardless, he inclined his head at that statement. "The sooner the better. I want to try out a new method of fulfilling requests; I'm hoping that it will work out well. But if it doesn't, that doesn't matter... friends come first, right?" He smiled at Edward, remembering what the boy had said. And even after everything else... he didn't want to lose his first friend.

Ed flashed Adel a grin at that, and nodded. Yeah, he could understand not being bound by logic. Science required it, of course, but sometimes you needed to look without logic to be able to see the truth. A homunculus, logically, couldn't exist, but they did and sticking to logic there would just get you killed. And this place, this place wasn't logical at all.

He gave Adel a curious look at the mention of new requests. "What's that?" he asked before smiling brightly at Adel and nodding. "Yeah. We should uh... get going." The question was, where?

"I'm starting to get a feel for when the nights are going to end. I'd like to see if I could bring the metal with me and make the items at the end of the night instead of at the beginning. Unless I'm incapacitated, which hasn't happened in a long time, I should be fine... and that way I could get things done as well."

"Although," he added with a quiet laugh, "if we keep gawking here we won't get anything done. I'm afraid I'll have to follow you; lead the way, Edward."

[identity profile] lost-metal.livejournal.com 2008-07-14 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Ed nodded in response, thinking that idea over and realising how helpful it could be. "Yeah. Would be nice not to be exhausted before the night's even started," Ed agreed. That was the major problem with alchemy at the start. A weapon was made but it left them both useless after doing it for a while.

Ed flushed slightly in embarrassment, rubbing the back of his head awkwardly. "Yeah. You're right," he said, putting off the inevitable question of exactly where they should go. He set off along the corridor anyway, heading out into the main area. He doubted that Envy would be in his room still so late in the night.
