Nightshift 33: M21-M30 Hallway

[from dinner post]

... the doctor sounded tired. Shawn wasn't sure if he preferred that voice or the more youthful one in the second announcement but either way, he figured, this guy's still fucking nuts.

Talk about Sci-Fi gone wrong. Gus would've loved this, even if Shawn knew the other wouldn't have been able to stop shaking in his slippers long enough to go into full dweeb mode. Shawn committed both announcements to memory-- just because authenticity sounded verified, it didn't mean he could trust anything that was being said especially when it involved so-called advanced technology, a "shield", and some kind of super hacker. Hackers, honestly. If the act didn't involve Angelina Jolie in any way Shawn just wasn't interested.

He held pushed at the prematurely opened door, looking out into the dark hallway warily. Pulling back in, he cast an almost-cautious grin at Peter. "After you...?"

Like he was going to go out there first. Yeah. Right.

"I don't like upsetting you," Valyn pointed out, wrapping his arms back around her. "And I'm trying very hard not to. And I was convinced I'd done something wrong. I'm making quite the effort here to ignore centuries worth of laws and conditioning to be able to... admit my own wants. You could be a touch more sympathetic."

He hoped his tone was clear enough that she knew he was teasing.

Mostly.

"Well, I did offer to be more sympathetic when you were in pain earlier," she pointed out, her lips twitching as she tried to subdue the laugh that kept trying to spill out. She shifted slightly atop him in reminder. "But you didn't want any."

"I don't want that sort of sympathy," Valyn said, shaking his head. "And I was trying to ignore that, thank you for reminding me."

"You're welcome," she replied, mischief glinting in bright green eyes as she gazed down at him. "And you didn't specify that there were different sorts of sympathy you were after. Don't be so picky."

"You're terribly cruel to me, Shana." Valyn pouted, though it was purely affected. And he knew Shana would know it. "Such a beautiful girl should speak only words of honey, and yet you lash me with your tongue."

She almost stopped and stared at him, so surprised was she by his teasing manner. He'd pouted at her! Valyn! But she was too giddy over this to question it, and besides, she didn't want him to stop.

So instead, she adopted an aloof expression and tugged at one stray copper curl as she held it up in front of her face. "Mayhaps it's the red hair? I don't do honey very well. I never have."

"I have heard warnings about red haired wenches," Valyn agreed, pulling a mock long face. "Wicked witches, the lot of you. All promising all manners of delights, but offering your evil words instead. I'm afraid I am a man duped. And so thoroughly duped that I can do nothing but simply accept my horrid fate, and hope that you're kind to me now and again."

"Me??" she scoffed, shooting him an arch look. "I think you're getting us confused. That's entirely backwards. And I was more than ready to offer you any delightful kindness you could imagine," she reminded him, bending her head with a laugh, green eyes glinting with teasing amusement as she pressed a kiss to his jaw once more.

"Yes, you." Valyn ran his hands through Shana's hair, almost playfully. "And I never said you wouldn't follow through. It's your words that are so terribly cruel."

"We could always find something less cruel to do besides talking?" she suggested impishly, cocking her head to the side, a little shiver slipping down her spine as his fingers grazed against her scalp.

Unfortunately, it seemed that they'd never get beyond talking after all. At that moment, Keman walked through the door, too preoccupied with the problem of Shadow's apparent disappearance to worry about trivialities like, say, knocking first.

"Valyn, have you--"

Oh. Oh. Keman blinked, torn between horror and amusement.

"I can...come back later, if you want...?"

Valyn attempted to move away from Shana, but the fact that she was on top of him made it a bit difficult.

"Ah, Keman!" He squirmed, trying to discreetly urge Shana to get up off of him. "No, no, it's fine..." Oh ancestors, what was Keman going to think? There he was, without even a shirt, in bed with Shana....

And then he paused.

"Wait a moment...you're here before Shadow..."

Shana looked rather puzzled as well, and although she was reluctant to do so, she slid off of Valyn's chest with an easy grace and pushed herself up into a sitting position.

"I thought you had something to do tonight? We weren't expecting you so quickly."

She hadn't realized how much time had passed. Had it been a while? And where was Shadow? Unless he'd stumbled across them and tried to give them privacy, but she didn't think he'd leave without a word first...

Re: M25

[identity profile] adorkabledragon.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"Fine. Right. Which would explain why you're half-naked in bed with my sister on top of you?" There wasn't any hostility in Keman's voice, and his eyes were shining with barely contained amusement. Despite what Valyn might think, he was perfectly fine with the two being involved in a sexual relationship. In fact, he kind of welcomed it. At least that would resolve some of the tension between them.

Quickly? The young dragon gave Shana a blank look and pulled down his shirt collar, revealing a perfectly healed left shoulder. "I've already finished," he said, waving his finally functional arm to demonstrate. "It's been...nearly an hour." If not longer.

But Mero still wasn't here.

"I thought he'd be here by now," he admitted. "I can't hear him." And since Shadow wasn't there, that didn't leave them many alternatives. There was no way that Shadow wouldn't come, was there? He would have at least let them know beforehand...

He had to have been taken. Like Fai's friend.

It didn't take Valyn long to come to the same conclusion. He knew all about taking people at night, and what was done to them. And he knew where they were taken, as he'd done escort missions those nights.

And now they'd taken Shadow.

His face hardening and steeling into a blank mask, Valyn shoved himself off the bed and grabbed his dagger.

"The second floor," he said, voice cold. "There's a spare knife in my closet, one of you take it."

He didn't even bother putting on a shirt as he headed for the door.

"Keman, you take it," Shana added, mind quickly guessing what had happened. Had it really been over an hour? Fire and Rain, she should have been paying attention! Shadow could be in trouble and where had they been?

She grabbed her jagged-ended pole from the floor beside the bed, scrambling to her feet and straightening her clothes as she hurried after Valyn. Her quartz was in her robe pocket still and she had several days' worth of magic stored up in it, as well as tonight's still. If Shadow was harmed, someone would pay.

It took a little rooting around in the closet to find the knife, but eventually Keman located it under a pile of yellow-faced shirts. It was the same broad, lethal-looking knife that Valyn had said he was going to return...apparently he hadn't, but the rightful owner's loss was their gain at the moment. He felt a little awkward handling it, but he did have some experience with weapons. It wouldn't be too hard.

Once he was ready, he turned to the others.

"Shall we?"

Valyn just nodded tightly and headed out into the hall, determined to get to his cousin as quickly as possible.
