Day 30: Cafeteria, Dinner

The cafeteria was all but empty when Zelnick got there. He was a little disappointed; he had gotten the impression that patients usually ate dinner in their rooms, so he hadn't arranged to meet anyone, and there really wasn't anyone to sit by and engage in conversation yet.

Quietly, he collected dinner and a big glass of orange juice, and chose a seat near the food-serving counters. Talking for so long had made him thirsty... and, well, fruit juice was a luxury he had missed.

"Technically, my nurse did it," she replied, an embarrassed flush slipping over her cheeks as she cast him a quick sideways glance, then turned her gaze persistently to her tray, trying to ignore the nervousness she felt. Why did he always set her stomach to fluttering uncomfortably?

"I... I don't really know many things to do with it, other than ways of keeping it out of my eyes," she admitted.

Valyn just shrugged. "Shadow's always done mine." At least insofar as anything more intricate than a simple tail or braid. He didn't know much about doing it himself.

"Have you plans for this evening?"

"I... Not yet," she replied, turning to glance at him uncertainly. "I'd like to get out and explore a little, I think."

She wasn't sure if he and Shadow had plans again or not, and she hadn't had a chance to talk to Keman yet today, either.

"I believe Shadow and I are doing the same." Valyn nodded. "And I've invited a man I met in the shower to join us. We got to speaking, and he's here alone." And it wasn't safe alone. He'd have been lost without Renji taking pity on him his first day.

"You're going with Keman?"

"A man?" she asked curiously, tilting her head to the side as she eyed him. "And I don't know. Maybe? I haven't spoken with Keman yet, I don't know what his plans are for tonight yet."

"His name is Angel." Valyn picked at his food. "He didn't have anyone to join him at night. I thought it best to offer him company, rather than leave him to fend for himself." He lifted an eyebrow at Shana's lack of solid plans.

"Perhaps leave him a note?"

"I will," Shana nodded, picking at her food. "But he may wish to stay in and practice with his magic again. I'm not certain. Don't worry, though, I'll be careful."

"Angel?" she tried to change the subject instead. "Is he new here?"

"That may not be the wisest idea, all things considered." He had burnt himself out before, after all. At least for the day.

"He is." Valyn nodded. "Just woke up last night. He's already aware of the mechanics of this place, at least."

"Well, I'm not so certain he's recovered enough to go out traipsing, either," she replied. "But I'll ask him. You and Shadow will be careful?"

She frowned slightly. "This place is always adding new people, isn't it?"
