Day 30: Cafeteria, Dinner

The cafeteria was all but empty when Zelnick got there. He was a little disappointed; he had gotten the impression that patients usually ate dinner in their rooms, so he hadn't arranged to meet anyone, and there really wasn't anyone to sit by and engage in conversation yet.

Quietly, he collected dinner and a big glass of orange juice, and chose a seat near the food-serving counters. Talking for so long had made him thirsty... and, well, fruit juice was a luxury he had missed.

Seemed last shift was the time to be productive, while this one might be a little slower. He caught sight of a couple of the people from the message board, but they were already busily engaged in conversation, as were most of the shinigami. He couldn't very well make any sort of report to the other shinigami on the message board either, not without giving away far too much. If they wanted the information today, they'd simply have to try a little harder to get it. It could wait anyway.

Gin picked up a little bit of everything before he found a fairly empty table. The boy there looked to be fairly young and Gin was almost certain he hadn't seen him here before. All the better.

"Evenin'," he said with a smile as he set his tray down. "Mind a lil' company?"

Tenchi looked up suddenly and saw a man standing over him. The man seemed friendly enough, but there was something about him that made Tenchi's skin crawl. He shook himself mentally.

Calm down Tenchi, he admonished mentally. This guy's done nothing to you.

Putting a cheerful smile, he nodded and motioned for the seat.

"Please do. My name's Tenchi Masaki. Nice to meet you."

Gin nodded and took a seat. This boy was not at all like some of the others he'd met today. It would take a bit of talking though, to figure just what kind of person Masaki was. "Ichimaru Gin," he replied, "ain't seen you 'round this place before. You new?"

Tenchi nodded.

"Yeah. I just kinda...woke up here this morning."

He continued to much his meal and talk between bites.

"This is either one or Washu's crazy experiments or Mr. Hughes and Mr. Hitsugaya are telling the truth and this place is the product of a monstrous doctor. Landel, right?"

"Ara... how unlucky," he commented. It'd been just a little over a week that he'd arrived. Seemed there were few that'd been here longer than that and even if they did, they didn't know much more than he.

This one, at least, had been informed about the place. And by someone he knew no less. "S'pose you'll find out for y'self this evenin'," Gin commented, "but with so many tellin' ya th' same story, likely there's at least a little truth to it, ne?"

"Maybe," Tenchi replied. "But some of Washu's experiments in the past have been...over the top."

Tenchi had to give a nervous chuckle at that one. He was remembering the time that Washu created a robotic clone of him to measure his capacity to love and then digitized his physical body to keep him out of the way.

"As for tonight, well, I can't claim that this would be my first time being put into a dangerous situation. Still, I'm not looking forward to it."

Finishing with his meal, he put his hands in his arms. It was going to be a very long night. Looking up, he realized that he was more or less talking to himself and berated himself for not being a better conversationalist.

"What about you Mr. Gin? How long have you been here and where are you from?"

Washu? He'd mentioned the name twice now. Perhaps this friend of his was capable of some nasty things if he thought them responsible for this current mess. Interesting. "That so? Sounds like quite the character," he said easily, in case the boy wished to say more on the subject.

"Y'made any arrangements? I'm sure the captain must have warned you about going alone," he said in a friendly manner. "I'd make sure y'have some friends t'meet with, 'specially your first night." He gave a shrug though, the boy's decision was certainly his own business.

"Been here a lil' over a week," he replied. "N' I'm from Japan. Osaka. Any of that sound familiar? We get all kinds 'round here, all different places too."

"Captain? You mean Mr. Hitsugaya? If you know him..."

Tenchi gave a shudder. He was face to face with another God of Death. Wonderful.

"A-Anyway, I don't really have any arrangements made. I'm just going to try to find my way out of here. If you know anyone willing to help, I'd be very grateful. As for Osaka, I know it well. I'm from Okayama."

That reaction could only mean one thing. Even though it was possible that he'd simply met the captain before, Masaki seemed to have lumped him in with the other. Oh well. Not much to do about it now. "Mm, we used t'work together. Ain't much t'be afraid of here Masaki-kun. Most've us are all but harmless, circumstances bein' what they are." Funny how the boy believed in things like Shinigami so easily, but he was having trouble believing that this place was exactly as the other patients had told him.

"Saa... if escapin' was that simple, I don't think many of us'd still be here, ne?" He gave a short laugh, "Okayama hm? Then we're almost neighbors. I know you're plenty eager t'leave this place, as most've us are Masaki-kun, but it ain't something can be done in a single night, thought you're welcome t'try."
