Day 30: Cafeteria, Breakfast
Hitsugaya woke with a start.
His entire body ached, but the pain was nowhere near as bad as it had been the night before. His injuries had been tended two with clean gauze and bandages, and he found every movement wasn't agony. He wasn't in the best of shape, but thanks to the miracle of landel's strange time distortion, he had mostly recovered from the vile poison without having to waste anyone else's talents.
And in his hand, still...there was the key.
He dressed quickly, sliding the key onto the key ring from his desk drawer and stuck it into his pocket. Whether the key stood to gain them anything or not, it stood as a vital reminder that they could succeed in this place. There was hope, as insignificant as it often seemed. They could beat this place.
That small shred of hope made getting up worth it.
The nurse who escorted him to breakfast was cheerful, and commented idly about how wonderful it was to see young Tommy Winters up and about again after his unfortunate run-in with a bad case of food poisoning. He smirked slightly, knowing that any lies the institute forced into their heads were only that: lies. He wouldn't buy it for a second. And on top of that, the concept of muffins sounded almost appetizing. While he still preferred his authentic Japanese cuisine, the food here was slowly becoming more and more bearable. He would have preferred a warm bowl of sweet nattou over rice over the mufffins, but they would do. The plain yogurt and fruit, on the other hand, was excellent. He piled his plate high with fruit as usual, and got several small bowls of yogurt as well.
Finding the most convenient table to the end of the food line, he took a seat and scanned for the new arrivals. New arrivals meant people who would be lost and confused. Renji did a good job of making a bulliten post last time...he should recommend abarai-fukutaicho do the same again this time.

He nodded slowly, glancing around and spotting Aya and Omi talking together, and Ken with a young looking kid. "Yeah, I have friends here. All of them." There might just have been a slight note of bitterness in his voice at that.

"Variety is the spice of life and all that." A painful smile twisted his lips as he glanced back over at Aya and Omi. Ken he was able to get along with most of the time. If he got pissed at you, then he'd punch you and then leave it. It was simple enough to deal with. But the others... "One of them comes from four years earlier than me and I'm not the man he remembers and he definitely isn't the person he becomes. The others... the time before we came here was damn close to hell on earth. Makes things awkward."
no subject
No, he wasn't going to go there today. From one point of view his family was dead. Jeanne, Marguerite and even Percy. Long dead. Or just the same as he left them, if he were allowed to return. So it didn't matter. Armand closed his notebook, trying to think of something wise or comforting to say.
"I wouldn't waste what time you do have, awkward or not." And he worried he was being too nosy or pushy, but he'd already said it and couldn't take it back now.
no subject
He shrugged, giving the man an apologetic smile. And to think that he'd been getting a little better too. "We try. We're all kinda' prickly people and things don't work out quite the way we intend."
no subject
"And that's what we're all going to need to survive here. To succeed."
no subject
He frowned when the sounds of conflict reached his ears, cursing himself for not paying more attention, and turned to find out what was happening. It looked like more than a simple fight like the ones that happened occasionally, more like... "If everyone joined in," he murmured consideringly.
no subject
There was nothing he could do, he tried to tell himself. "What would happen then?" he whispered in response to Yohji's murmur.
no subject
He glanced back at Armand. "There's more of us than the staff," he said quietly. "And they're human during the day, with no monstera to back them up. If everyone joined in, overwhelmed them..." he bit his lip for a moment. He was weaponless and didn't relish the thought of getting drugged, but if they could rally everyone before the momentum was lost... not as though he were used to leading large scale battles or anything though.
no subject
"What can we do? Just start fighting?" He wasn't very good at this kind of thing, very not good.
"I hate not defending a girl," he finally admitted. "Do you know who she is?"
no subject
He nodded in agreement. "Me too." Women were something to be defended and he still felt guilt for all the times he'd been forced to ignore that. "I don't know who she is, but she still doesn't deserve this."
no subject
So much about Landel's Institute disgusted Armand. "I agree. Are you prepared for the consequences?"
no subject
He raised an eyebrow at Armand, a little surprised by his descision to attack. Was he? He could jump in and probably get his ass kicked and he hated heroics. Heroics never went down well but... Klausians never stop fighting. "I've been through worse than getting sedated."
no subject
There were others starting to attack the staff, but not nearly enough yet. Armand knew what failure looked like, and if this didn't spread, they were doomed. He stood, fingering his tray, considering it as a possible weapon.
Then he climbed up on the table and started to shout, "There are more of us than there are of them! Are we going to let them abuse a girl without fighting back?" He didn't have anyone trying to stop him yet, but he thought he might fairly quickly. It wasn't easy looking fierce with just a flimsy tray for a weapon.
no subject
Omi grumbled under his breath as they finally reached Yohji's table. "We're not doing anything but getting out of here awake and in one piece."
Then, louder, "Balinese, report." Yohji could be mad at him later, but right now he was going to make sure his friends did not get involved in that. Even if he had to get Aya to drag Yohji out.
no subject
But then the sharp command pulled him up short and he twisted quickly before clutching at his chest when the movement pulled at the bruises from last night. "Omi..." he began, his eyes widening at the sight of Aya and Omi standing there. He shook his head, trying to gather himself. "If enough people join in, they might stand a chance," he offered, although the argument sounded weak to him now.
no subject
"We have to move," he told Omi shortly, nodding towards the shouting man. They didn't have much time before the nurses would come to take him down. "Now."
no subject
"Come on people! We can't let them do this to us! Rise up now and fight for your freedom!"
Then the first of the staff reached the table, not ignoring the others there but focusing on him even though he wasn't violent yet. An orderly grabbed for his ankle to pull him off the table, and even as he slipped toward the edge, he clonked the man over the head. But now the man, even though he was hurting, had his ankle. Armand knew wouldn't be long before a nurse got a needle into him.
Maybe all the shouting had inspired the others. He hoped so anyway.
no subject
Yohji's former tablemate had finally drawn the attention of a pack of nurses and orderlies. Just what they needed. Omi dodged around a nurse, torn between heading farther into the crowd to find Ken and grabbing Yohji before making for the doors. Aya was right, they needed to leave and now, but forcing Yohji to come with them would only attract more attention. "We can't win against them like this. Yohji-kun, please."
no subject
He gave Omi a painful look. "We can't just do nothing!" he hissed, desperation entering his voice. He could feel the cracks widening. "We're supposed to save people." Fight the dark beasts... He took a fe unsteady steps towards Armand.
no subject
"You're nothing but a loose canon without a leader, Balinese," he said coldly, giving weight to the codename. If Yohji didn't know what he was saying, he was a fool. Oh, he hated himself for this as well, Yohji wasn't alone in that. But mission mode made sure he could worry over it later, not now.
"We need to move. Now."
no subject
"Let go!"
His struggles freed him from the grip, but one of the nurses was right there suddenly with a needle. He tried to roll away but not fast enough. She jabbed him in the back of the neck, and after the sting started to fade, he felt a whoosh of dizziness and then he could barely feel himself at all.
He lay back on the table, blinking stupidly at the lights and wondering why the voices all sounded so distant. Then strong arms pulled him upright and held him. He supposed he'd go wherever they took him, so long as he could lie down again.

"Abyssinian!" He snapped at Aya. The last thing they needed was to fight amongst themselves right now. He could save the berating for later. "We can't save everyone, Balinese. There's a time and place to fight, and this isn't it."
no subject
He winced as Armand fell, clenching his fists and gritting his teeth as he looking between the fight and his teammates, before finally he slumped, the fight leaking out of him. He couldn't do anything anyway. "Fine," he said tightly. "There's not much point getting out of here anyway."
