Day 30: Cafeteria, Breakfast

Hitsugaya woke with a start.

His entire body ached, but the pain was nowhere near as bad as it had been the night before. His injuries had been tended two with clean gauze and bandages, and he found every movement wasn't agony. He wasn't in the best of shape, but thanks to the miracle of landel's strange time distortion, he had mostly recovered from the vile poison without having to waste anyone else's talents.

And in his hand, still...there was the key.

He dressed quickly, sliding the key onto the key ring from his desk drawer and stuck it into his pocket. Whether the key stood to gain them anything or not, it stood as a vital reminder that they could succeed in this place. There was hope, as insignificant as it often seemed. They could beat this place.

That small shred of hope made getting up worth it.

The nurse who escorted him to breakfast was cheerful, and commented idly about how wonderful it was to see young Tommy Winters up and about again after his unfortunate run-in with a bad case of food poisoning. He smirked slightly, knowing that any lies the institute forced into their heads were only that: lies. He wouldn't buy it for a second. And on top of that, the concept of muffins sounded almost appetizing. While he still preferred his authentic Japanese cuisine, the food here was slowly becoming more and more bearable. He would have preferred a warm bowl of sweet nattou over rice over the mufffins, but they would do. The plain yogurt and fruit, on the other hand, was excellent. He piled his plate high with fruit as usual, and got several small bowls of yogurt as well.

Finding the most convenient table to the end of the food line, he took a seat and scanned for the new arrivals. New arrivals meant people who would be lost and confused. Renji did a good job of making a bulliten post last time...he should recommend abarai-fukutaicho do the same again this time.

Aya didn't have time for pleas, just hard truths. He had an objective, which was to find Ken right now. He didn't more than nod at both Omi and Yohji before moving slightly to another spot, gazing at the crowd. What they thought of him right now was beside the point too.

Yohji was wrong, however. This idiotic fight here wouldn't get anyone out. It would get a lot of people hurt, someone's temper cooled down, and possibly some bodies if things went really ugly.

Aya wanted... The assassin glanced back at Omi, unwavering. "I can't see Siperian still. Take a look from the table?"

He took an involuntary step toward Yohji, wanting him to stop hurting like this, before stopping himself. He just looked at Yohji, hating that this was all Yohji had to look forward to.

Then you can come home.

He closed his eyes for a long moment, banishing thoughts of anything beyond the walls of the institution. He looked from Aya to the table, then found the nurses still doing their jobs throughout the room. If he drew their attention, as he imagined he would from the table, he somehow doubted Aya would just let them sedate him. He wouldn't sacrifice one teammate for another like that. Couldn't. "It's too dangerous now. I don't think they're going to use lethal force, not when they can sedate us just as easily. They'll want to keep up the daytime illusion. Siberian should be fine. Just keep your eyes open."

Yohji lowered his eyes, not wanting to see Omi's expression when he looked at him. He must be such a disappointment to the kid. He was such a different man than he had been back then, so different to the person that Omi remembered, but he didn't know how to go back to being that person. He didn't think it was possible.

He walked towards his leader, away from the fight and rested his hand against Omi's shoulder as he took up position behind him. "I'm sorry."

"I'm not worried about the nurses," Aya said calmly before moving ahead. The nurses acted like any staff in any medical facility, they wouldn't be the actual danger here. However, the patients here weren't exactly your general, drugged mental patients. It was more like a prison riot and it had the possibility of turning really ugly, really quickly. And as much as he was worried for Ken, he knew Ken could hold his own in a fight, more than hold his own. Aya just wanted to see him as far from the heat of the fight as possible, for reasons that weren't as well articulated as Omi's possibly were.

"I'll take a look a bit further," he said, knowing it only had to be a suggestion, and biting his teeth together for that.

Yohji didn't have anything to apologize for, but Omi didn't see any way to say that and get him to believe it, so he said nothing.

The room was already calming as the nurses' efforts started to be more effective. One fighter after another was falling and being dragged out of the room. More people who'd kept out of the fight were also funneling toward the doors, and most likely back to their rooms. "No. I'm sorry, Abyssinian, but no. They're clearing the room now. If you want to find him, try to catch him at the door. Otherwise, drop it."

Omi dropped his head as a nurse approached them, looking equally prepared to guide them out or threaten them with consequences. He turned for the door, leaving the unspoken third option hanging. Aya could always do what he wanted, despite Omi. He'd always had that option.

Yohji stood meekly behind Omi, his face void of emotion as he watched the fighters fall and the nurses begin to take people away. Too many of them, way too many and how had they drugged that many people without even touching them? If it had been gas, they'd all have been affected. He supposed that it was just another example of how things were so far from normal here.

They couldn't have done anything...

He flinched when the nurse grabbed his shoulder, but let the woman lead him along.
