Day 29: Chapel

Hiei didn't give a damn about religious services, meditation, or pretending to be social. The always sudden waking after night put him in a bad mood, this one particularly so. Even with Kurikara licking him like some perverted moron, the warmth the dragon provided was welcome in Hiei's bed, and missing when he woke, giving the surrounding air a greater sense of chill.

But the perfect thing to relieve his anger might just be making an appearance that morning, and that at least gave Hiei hope for a decent day.

Hopefully Kurikara and Kurama both would be clever enough to figure it out for themselves. Without hesitation, Hiei demanded to be led to the temple, taking a seat in one of the rear pews. Humans had a way of overdoing things, and this place wasn't really much exception to that. Granted Hiei's limited knowledge prevented him from realizing there were much more outrageous churches, but to the demon, the colored pieces of glass and polished wood seemed to be much.

It didn't matter, however. Either could be turned into weapons, perfect objects to slice into that damned head doctor's throat or bash in his skull. That was a thought worth grinning about.

[Feel free to pester. Just, uh, be aware that he's not exactly nice.]

Valyn had always been moderately curious about human religions. He knew they'd had them, before they'd been enslaved, but only small shreds remained. Elvenkind had no gods of which to speak. Some had turned to the tattered vestiges of human religions in hopes of gaining some sort of power, but as far as Valyn knew, it had never worked.

He did want to make sure the others were well - Shana was, he knew, he'd spent the night with her - but Shadow had never returned, and Keman....

He'd leave a note on the board. As it was, his nurse escorted him to the 'chapel'. It was a lovely room, looking somewhat like the indoor gazebos some Lords fancied. He took a seat near a young woman, and nodded to her.

"I hope you don't mind if I sit here?"

MOMO looked up and put on a small smile as someone sat down. He didn't look as angry or edgy as some of the others in the room, and that came as a slight relief.

"Not at all," the realian replied. She then moved over slightly, although the gesture was meant more to back up her words than anything else, since there was already more than enough room.

She wasn't sure if he was the talking type or not, or if he had come to the chapel in order to observe some religious practice, but she opted to do the polite thing and introduce herself anyway.

"Um... I'm MOMO, by the way."

"Thank you." Valyn sat back, glancing around with interest. "I'm V'kass Valyn Lord Hernalth - Valyn, if you'd prefer." He knew his titles and various names were rather difficult for most people here to remember.

"This is a place of religion?" he asked, curious. "I'm afraid I don't know much about human forms of worship."

MOMO couldn't help but blink slightly as Valyn introduced himself. Not that she wasn't used to slightly long names (her own name was quite lengthy as well, especially when her title was added), it was just a little odd since she had met someone with a long name the previous day, too.

At his question, however, the realian nodded. "Yes, many people use churches, or in this case chapels, to observe their religious practices. But... I think many of the people here today came for a different reason."

There was something else about his words that caught her attention, though. And, after a brief pause, she spoke up once more. "Um... I hope you can forgive me for asking, but... You said you didn't know much about human forms of worship. Does that mean you're not a human?"

MOMO hadn't yet met anyone else who wasn't a human-- or at least, no one she had met had admitted being a non-human. And she had long since realized she couldn't reply on her sensors to give her the necessary information she needed to figure it out for herself.

"Because of the Doctor?" Valyn asked, though it wasn't really a question. He had to admit he was a little bit curious as to what the man looked like.

"Ah, no, I'm not human." He shook his head. "I'm elven, which I suppose is rather close. Just a few small differences." He smiled, his usual charming smile, without even thinking. Old habits died hard, as it was.

"My kind doesn't have any sort of religion, but we know a small bit about human practices. I've always found them to be fascinating. Though there's nothing like organized houses of worship."

"Yes," MOMO nodded once more. "Even though he didn't confirm that he'd be here, I think it's safe to say that's why a lot of people are here... It's a little scary, I think."

As he confirmed that he wasn't human, or not exactly human, the realian looked up at him and tilted her head slightly. "Elven? I've never met anyone like that before." She returned the smile witout hesitation, somewhat comforted at finally meeting someone else who wasn't exactly a human.

"I admit, I don't know much about the religious practices of humans either." She had only been inside a church on a few occasions; none of which had been in order to worship. Of course, there had also been everything with chaos and KOS-MOS-- or rather, Mary. But there hadn't been time to properly explain things at that time, so MOMO hadn't fully understood that either.

"Some of them seem rather confusing, and some of them," she couldn't help but think of Ormus, "seem... almost bad, in a way."

[identity profile] notmyfather.livejournal.com 2007-12-22 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"I can't say it's the man himself frightens me," Valyn admitted, "but the power he wields." While demented and deranged, the man on the intercom reminded him some of his father in a rage. Which was frightening, in a way, but had lost most terror for Valyn. That was a demon he had beaten already.

"I don't think many people here have met my kind. Which is a good thing." Valyn didn't elaborate, as he really didn't enjoy simply launching into an explanation of his people's particular nasty habits.

"Bad? I thought religion was simply a structured form of worshiping gods?" He couldn't quite grasp how that could be bad.

[identity profile] floraltempest.livejournal.com 2007-12-22 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
MOMO thought to herself for a moment, before looking down at her hands once more. "I think... I think I can understand that." It did make sense, at least. It wasn't the Doctor himself that was so frightening-- few people were frightening by themself. But the idea that he was, allegedly, the one behind everything; that was what was frightening. How could one person be capable of so much?

She was a little curious as to why it would be a good thing that many people hadn't met those who were of elven origin. But, if he would rather not explain the statement, she wasn't one to press the issue.

"Oh, it is! At least, from what I do know, that's what religion usually entails, but..." She paused momentarily, trying to figure out a proper way of wording it. "Sometimes the people who lead certain religions become so engrossed in the power that comes with their leadership position, that they forget the true purpose of their religion. They want to become a god themself, and that's when things get dangerous because, from what I've seen, they'll stop at nothing to achieve that goal."

[identity profile] notmyfather.livejournal.com 2007-12-23 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
That made some degree of sense. Though in Valyn's experience, religion wasn't needed for that mentality. As far as the humans were concerned, elves were gods. Or demons.

"Every elven lord I knew of who sought the secrets of human gods did so in the quest for greater power," he mused, thinking on it. "Power of any sort is a seductive lure, I suppose. I can understand, if religions rely upon leaders, how that can easily happen."
