Day 28: Main Street

[from here]

Momo headed down what she suspected was the center street for the town. She noted the various businesses as she walked, as well as the increased staff presence, and kept to herself. If she was going to be wandering around lost in her own thoughts, she might as well get a feel for the town.

Maybe she'd make a map once she had a better idea.

The town was certainly odd-looking, though not enough to jar Byakuya from his thoughts. It was ridiculous... an unwashed, common cretin such as Renji? Had she no sense?

And... to think, she had compared the redheaded fuck-up to Hisana! Such disrespect for her own sister... a sister who had, despite her inadequacy as such, loved Rukia to the very end.

It was maddening.

After his warning to Daemon, Saetan found himself wanting to test their limits with the staff, but he enjoyed the freedom to walk better. There were many shops on the street, and even more inmates from the Institute walking around.

He idly examined the coupons as he walked. He walked as far as the next corner and then doubled back to enter the bookstore.

The shinigami gave only a cursory glance around the street as she walked along it, her attention was on something far more important in her mind. The trip should prove interesting, but she had bigger things on her mind now. She'd need to speak to Hitsugaya soon too, report on last night. Her lack of progress was becoming extremely annoying. And Captain would doubtless want a blow by blow account 0of everything Gin had done.

Cloud walked a little more slowly than he had before, spying shops that were open for business. He knew he had been given a booklet of coupons for stuff here, but he was more interested in peering in the shop windows to see what was there. How long had it been since he had been shopping?

He preferred only to do it when Tifa told him he had to, he needed something really badly. Shopping was never fun unless it was with someone else anyway. His interest was not in shopping anyway. He was really only tempted by the electronics store anyway, though he stopped outside the hardware store. He could get nails there… maybe a hammer if he was lucky.

He forced himself to keep on walking so he could think about how to sneak it back to the institute. He was heading towards a park now it seemed, which was something to note. It would be less crowded than the one where the buses had stopped anyway.

He stopped as the Main Street met one before the park. Looking up and down it, he contemplated where he wanted to explore to before heading north up the new street.

It was just like most of the places he'd gone to collect souls. Plain old town, nothing that really caught his eye. There were brightly colored shops and everywhere was decorated in fall colors, something about Halloween? Was it really that time of year? Not that time really seemed to matter much around here, but it was probably worth noting.

He kept his distance, meandering in less than a straight line as he watched the others walking purposefully onward. Abarai had been back near the buses, but he hadn't seen little Toushirou yet, or the ryoka.

It wasn't until Luke hit Main Street did he fully grasp the situation. In other words, he woke up.

"... Wait, where the hell is everyone?!"

Not only was he wearing weird clothes (they were so stiff and they didn't even fit right!), but he was in a weird place. It looked like a town, with sidewalks and everything, except there were the occasional horseless... carriage (some kind of fontech?) and none of the shops were familiar to Luke at all.

Was this what Earth was really like? It would have been more exciting if Luke had actually expected it. But here he was, in the middle of nowhere, and with no one.

That, and he was really hungry.

Luke looked at the (now crinkled) pack of coupons that the nurse had given him. He had a free lunch and a free... meal at some place. Well, he could see the 'Tasty Burger' place at the corner of the street.

"Well, maybe everyone else decided to get something to eat," Luke thought aloud, but he knew that wouldn't happen. Still, no point in trying to look for everyone on an empty stomach, right? Hey, it could be fun!

[identity profile] notaghostreally.livejournal.com 2007-11-04 12:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[Guessing that Luke's free?]

Danny had been walking right behind a red-haired guy when he decided to shout something out. Unsure of what to make of it, he walked up to him, standing silently for a bit before quietly uttering a, "Uhhhhh..."

"Everyone's here," he said, trying to sound like he knew for sure except he really didn't know where here was. "It's a field trip outside...where have you been for the whole bus ride?" Despite the snarky comment, he actually didn't sound all that mean.

"And come to think of it...food doesn't sound so bad either." The muffin and apple juice had barely been sustaining. After all, it was only a muffin.

[identity profile] sasuke-of-sound.livejournal.com 2007-11-01 06:27 am (UTC)(link)

Sasuke managed to convince his nurse that he didn't need his hand held or shoulder touched in order to sense his way around town -- he could follow her footsteps just fine. It might have been a bit difficult discerning them from others in the area, but he could just look at it as training.

He'd asked her to find Aidou or Naruto first, but she hadn't spotted either and told him that he should "try to find some new friends today!" before pressing a booklet into his hand.

After learning what facials and manicures were, he concluded that his first stop would necessarily have to be this 'Callahan's.' If the patients could communicate through some board there, he could try to get rid of the useless coupons.

[identity profile] theheirshinra.livejournal.com 2007-11-01 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
All right, now what?

That seemed to be the question of the day. Standing there on the sidewalk without security pressed around him or a limo idling at the cornre was suddenly disarming. It was one of those things he hadn't done in years. Suddenly here he was, out in public without anyone around him. There was no shotgun at his side or other weapon concealed on him.

It made him feel very small.

The urge to go hunt down Reno was put down quickly. Reno deserved time off more than anyone. He wasn't going to consider Schuldig. The telepath had made his view clear. Taking a deep breath, he looked up and down the street.

"What now?" he muttered to himself. There had to be something to figure out how to help them all instead of standing here like a fool.

Main Street looked like a good place to start. Anise could make out a number of signs indicating various shops down the road. With that many specialty stores, Doyleton appeared to be a little more developed than a lot of the towns she was used to seeing on Auldrant. It also seemed more active, but perhaps that was just because of the presence of the Landel's staff and patients today.

If there was a post office, it would probably be on a street like this one, right? She just had to learn who the nation's authorities were, send a plea by carrier pigeon, and help would be on the way! ...Maybe. It was worth a try!

As she walked, Anise caught a glimpse of a pile of books in a window just out of the corner of her eye. She turned her head to get a better look. Was there a library here? Without realizing, she had walked right past it! If any place had information, that would have to be it.

But as she was thinking this, she had been neglecting to watch where she was going, and absently walked headfirst into a much taller man who had been standing in front of her. The collision made the tiny girl stumble back a few steps before she regained her balance. "A-ah! I'm sorry!"

After just the short time at Landel's, it felt strange to walk so openly in a town. At least she didn't have a nurse at her side constantly.

Relena took note of different shops as she walked, thinking Duo might want to be around if she got a manicure at some point today. Not for the laugh factor - unless Heero decided to get one too - but for the different tools the manicurist would use.

Up ahead, she noticed another greenspace. She hoped it would be as nice as the other one.

Ugh. The town center was absolutely swarming with staff. As many patients as there were, it seemed like the staff contrived to match their number. She wondered if new nurses were plucked out of the aether as easily as the patients seemed to be. And whether it was actually easy.

Signum altered her path to take her away from highest concentrations of staff. The packet of coupons they'd been issued didn't have much buying power, anyway. Some time in relative solitude would be the most she could hope for from this trip, though she was sure the staff would keep her from wandering too far.

"What were your ideas on getting your hands on the cigarettes?" he asked conversationally as he stepped forward, pacing slowly to wait for Sanzo to catch up with him. It didn't hurt to get a second opinion before going on his way with stealing the said cancer rolls.

He studied the buildings along the street, the signs over the little stores and boutiques. Spa, beauty salon, bookstore and something that seemed like a handiwork shop, and then, a grocery store, which would be Seishirou's pick for a place to steal some cigarettes.

[identity profile] 31st-of-china.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Sanzo frowned, even as his eyes settled on the grocery store. It looked foreign compared to what he was accustomed to, but if it was anything like the ones back home, more likely to stock what they were looking for.

Still, Seishirou had brought up a problem he hadn't thought of. He'd never stolen cigarettes or much of anything before. All he'd ever had to do was wave the gold card around, and everything that had a price was usually taken care of.

"I'm working on it." It was somewhat gruff, but the thought of turning into some common thief didn't appeal too much to the monk either. "We might as well take a look in there."

Ashton was looking at the coupons he'd received as he walked along, a faint blush on his face as memories of last night (the more pleasant ones, of course, to mask the painful ones) passed across his mind's vision.

Tasty Burger!?! No way. There was a place called Tasty Burger. And Ashton loved tasty burgers. Like, wow, did he ever. Burgers were his favorite food, in fact! He'd never pass up a chance to eat one! But for now, he had this muffin which he hadn't touched yet.

He took a little bite of it, looking around. Maybe he could get two tickets to this place called Tasty Burger!.. Oh, that sounded like such a good idea...

Hmm, what else was there? A coupon for a massage or a facial? That sounded great! And then a manicure. And another coupon for another restaurant! How nice! But the manicure..

It'd been so long since he'd his hands taken care of! He'd built up calluses in places from his swords, and his nails, while rather fastidiously kept clean, could look quite a bit better. Yes, he would go get a manicure first while he waited for his friends to show up!

Now he'd just have to find the place.

"A bathroom full of leeches. Fighting through a bathroom full of.. leeches. For something." Shivers went up Nami's spine. She.. was not a very big fan of bugs, and leeches seemed to be included in that whole 'bug' category. 'Giant bug' category, really. In fact, leeches fit quite well into the 'what the hell there are monsters here' section of her mind.

Auuughhh.

The navigator shook her head of that thought. No, she wouldn't imagine Luffy and Usopp wading through leeches in order to get something in ..nasty gunk. No, that was too disgusting. She'd ask Usopp about it later, but she'd ask him to spare the details...

For the meantime, there were more pressing issues. This was an entire town full of stuff. She looked around for a moment, then back at Luffy. She lowered her voice, grinning. "Well, captain? Are you ready? We're going to loot this town like no one's business."

[identity profile] rubbermancan.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
"Yep, lots and lots of leeches," Luffy replied simply, as if they were talking about the weather or something equally normal. "Or death-slugs, like I like to call 'em. They're pretty nasty! But way better than fighting giant scorpion-shrimp, I think!"

Monsters or not, though, Luffy definitely had no intention of dying. Dying was something he managed to avoid, one way or another, whether by luck or fate. Still, it was a possibility, especially since it happened to everyone sooner or later. But as long as he had his crew nearby, Luffy felt like nothing could stop him. He was on top of the world!

The idea of them forgetting things when they got back home didn't really sit well with Luffy, though. It didn't exactly make sense, not any more than people forgetting they were here to begin with. Normally he didn't think too hard on these sorts of things, but it was pretty weird, especially since it seemed like he was the only one who wasn't having any of these memory lapses.

Well, whatever. If it happened, it happened. They just needed to get out of here and kick Martin Landel's ass at some point. That was all that mattered to Luffy.

"Looting?" Luffy said suddenly, and he looked over at his navigator with a wide grin. Whether the Cat Ladies agreed with him or not, Luffy was a pirate, and he was all for having himself a pirating adventure. "Like what? There isn't any gold or anything, but there's got to be tons of interesting stuff around here, right?"

Main Street didn't seem any more interesting than whatever street they'd gotten off on. There were a people wandering around, and Lyta found it easy enough to pick out the patients from the rest. The others were blank spots, like the staff. Only the other patients - or prisoners - had minds she could access.

It was disturbing, so many blank minds out there. Like hitting static on a radio. And it just meant she wasn't going to be able to learn anything the easy way.

Hokuto took in all the sights eagerly; she couldn't buy anything, but window-shopping was fun too. She planned on going through the area once very quickly, and then more slowly to really take everything in; she'd go in the shops then, too. They only had so long, so she didn't want to find out later she'd missed a place she would have loved; she knew it would probably be a long time before they came back. And since she didn't know how much time she would have here...

She was honestly looking forward to talking to the salespeople; back when she first started planning a USA trip (she'd been promised one someday), she'd been worried about her lack of English fluency. She'd known enough to maybe get around in certain situations, but she wasn't anywhere near fluent--and now she suddenly was, completely. Speaking English was still a little hard, since when she tried to be polite she often slipped into Japanese (Amaterasu-sama and Momo didn't mind, but the professor had had to ask her to repeat herself a few times), but she should manage.

Her main worry was being identified as a mental patient--since the coupons had the Landels smiley, there was no way she could claim to be a regular schoolgirl on a day trip. Well... as long as she was quiet and polite, hopefully she'd still be treated well. She honestly was confused about several things, so maybe she could pass herself off as a harmless... um... what sort of mental disorder would let a person seem mostly normal but require hospitalization? Paranoia? Well, she could earnestly explain (only if asked!) about the boy that had been visiting her in her dreams...

Fewer patients had made it up this way yet, although it was probably only a matter of time. Omi meandered down the street slowly, glancing curiously at all the store fronts and little details that made the town very much unlike anything you'd ever run into in the heart of Tokyo. Okay, so maybe he did look a lot bit like a tourist, but hey, the people here already thought they were crazy, so what could it hurt? "Where to?"

[identity profile] deathneverlies.livejournal.com 2007-11-04 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Duo wasn't far behind Omi as far as 'tourist' went. There was a lot to see, and it'd been a while since he could leisurely stroll down a street and window shop. And speaking of window shopping... It probably wouldn't hurt to attempt a few discounts of his own while he was here. Granted, the staff was probably expecting it, but hey, it couldn't hurt to try. What was the worst they could do? Give him a slap on the wrist and take away his stuff? Pfft, that was child's play.

"Not sure. They've got a lot of weird places around here." Books, no. Toys, no. Food? Duo wasn't exactly hungry yet. "If we can find the right kind of shop, I wouldn't mind taking a few things back with us. How about you?"

Dean wasn't too sure where walking around aimlessly would lead him, except nowhere. The town seemed fairly normal; apart from the fact it was crawling with nurses, standing on corners and escorting patients about the place. Creepy.

It was only when he noticed a piss-poor attempt at a park that he also noted a bar.

A bar.

He remained motionless as he observed the building's exterior, the light breeze on his face breathing a bit of life in him. His lips grew lopsided with a smirk, thankful Doyleton wasn't so A-grade that it would dare to outlaw a common site for revelry and good times.

The town was a little too normal to be...well, normal. God, this place was so weird.

And what about their so-called "visitors"? Were they around here somewhere? Maybe. Or not.

Still, it was nice to actually be walking around outside for once. Having spent a good chunk of his life on the streets, being locked inside the institute—or anywhere, for that matter—was just stifling.

Reno ended up quite far down the street before a place to the left caught his attention. A bar, huh? He doubted he could grab a drink what with the lack of money and all, but hell, maybe he could bum one off of somebody. Cute barmaid perhaps? He could hope, after all.

The street was a long one and while he’d noticed a place that seemed to be serving food, he quickly glazed over it. It didn’t look like a bar (looked pretty weird actually) and it was a bar that he was searching for. Maybe he could get himself a drink or five if he could convince the proprietor that money wasn’t as valuable as people liked to make it seem.

This place was a town and by his logic, Zoro figured that if he walked long enough he’d find an inn or a tavern of some sort to eat at if a bar wasn’t available. One of his coupons mentioned a free lunch somewhere that sounded promising but a second glance at the small papers brought him to the conclusion that he would get nothing more out of the damn things.

Looking left and right, Zoro noted that half the stores in the area probably wouldn’t be of any help to him. They were odd too as there was not a single open air market in sight. Maybe they just liked having everything indoors? Che. If that was the case, he’d probably have to ask around a bit if he wanted to get anywhere.

This would all be so much easier if someone tried to mug him or something. At least then he wouldn’t have to bother someone for directions. The individual building signs were helpful, but they weren’t in the business of pointing him towards booze.

As they wandered down the main street, Ami took note of the shops around them, to see if there was any place she might be able to get help or even somehow obtain a weapon. She automatically felt guilty for that latter thought. Have I become a ruthless person? All I seem to want to do is to arm myself, she thought. This place...I don't like how it seems to be changing me... It was something she would seriously have to think about.

She noticed a couple businesses that were in her coupon booklet. Free manicure....I wonder if I can use this somehow...

Ami turned to Hisoka. "Are there any particular businesses you would like to go into," she asked as they walked. "The electronics shop looks interesting."

Hisoka followed along wordlessly as he searched through his bag given to him earlier. He had been to preoccupied to do it on the bus, so he might as well check it out now. Coupons... coupons... and food. Hisoka shook his head before ripping out the coupons that were unrelated to food. Like hell he was going to willingly let someone touch him!

"Do you want these?" Hisoka asked, still just a bit sour at the idea. At Ami's question Hisoka looked around thoughtfully. He didn't know exactly what businesses there were, but he might have been able to find something useful and bring it back. With a bit of effort, of course... Hisoka shrugged.

"Nothing specific yet. What about you?"

Once they hit main street, he slowed. Nonetheless, he wasn't happy to be wandering around in this situation, not by far. It wasn't that cold, but Aidou would have preferred a jacket at that point, just to draw attention away from his ridiculous clothes.

None of the others looked any better, and that was exactly the point.

"We'll see what's around, check out the local authorities. Little towns should have local diners, as well - we'll go there during midday to get out of the sun. Perfect place for town gossip." Bookstore, toy store, fast food restaurant, grocery store... No, no, no. It was all so domestic and useless.

He was hungry and tired, but other things had to come first. More or less, Aidou just couldn't bear to sit still and not be doing something in regards to finding answers. Even if it meant a vampire meandering around in broad daylight without the appropriate dress or sunscreen.

(( From here. (http://community.livejournal.com/damned/244463.html?thread=17470703#t17470703) ))

As they made their way onto the street, Claude realized there were quite a few local businesses around them. That certainly gave them plenty to check out. He read all of the signs as they made their way past the buildings. A bookstore, that Tasty Burger place he and Asch had talked about earlier, some beauty shops, a grocery store...

Actually, it had a lot more than most of the villages he'd passed through on Expel did, and he caught himself instinctively looking for some kind of weapons shop.

There probably won't be anything like that around here, he silently reminded himself. There might have been something like a gun and knife shop, but it wasn't like anyone around here would sell him anything, even if he had the money for it. Which was a problem, considering the desperate situation everyone was in right now.

Claude furtively glanced at the people wandering through the street. He knew he had a set of sticky fingers, knew he was fully capable of shop-lifting or pick-pocketing when the situation called for it. And, like he and Guy had talked about before, who knew if or when they'd be outside like this again? It'd make sense to take full advantage of it, wouldn't it?

No way, he told himself sharply. Not with Guy standing right next to me like this. What would he think of me if he saw me pull a stunt like that? He wouldn't even pick-pocket in front of his Expellian friends (not that he even did it all that often). Besides, the townspeople here probably didn't have anything to do with the institute, and stealing from other captives would have just been low.

Yes, Claude had sticky fingers, but he also had a conscience. It looked like he'd be going about things in an honest way this time. Now that he thought about it, maybe it was better he'd brought someone along, if only so he wouldn't wind up doing something he'd feel guilty about later.

Thankfully, he went through this whole thought process within the span of just a few moments, so the pause between them wasn't too long.

"Looks like there's a sheriff's office just down there," Claude remarked suddenly, pointing towards the building. "Too bad no one will believe us if we try to get help." Besides, with nurses watching their every move, it wasn't like they could do something like that without being noticed.

"Still, Doyleton seems like a peaceful town, doesn't it?" he added. Then he turned towards the taller blond. "What are the towns on Auldrant like, Guy? Are they anything like this one here?" Claude doubted it, but he thought it was worth asking, if only because he was genuinely curious.

There were a ton of shops to look at, and Guy found himself barely keeping track of where he was going since he was too busy taking everything in and trying to see if there was anything that might actually be helpful. He didn't think they would have the time to go into each and every store, after all. They only had a day and it wasn't likely that they would even get to stay until sunset.

While the architecture and general layout wasn't very much like Auldrant, the lines of stores was somewhat similar to how the main stretch of Grand Chokmah was laid out. It looked a lot different, but the general concept was the same. Not that there were any castles or mansions around here. This seemed more like St. Binah or even Engeve in that respect.

Completely unaware of Claude's moral dilemma, Guy only tuned in when the sheriff's office was mentioned. It was pretty frustrating that they wouldn't be believed, even though they were out among real people, some who might not have any clue of the horrors that were taking place not that far away. It wasn't fair, that they were actually out of that place and yet they couldn't actually get away.

At Claude's question, Guy forced himself to stop dwelling and instead just focused on answering. "Not really. I mean, none of them really look very much like this. There are small towns like this, though."

He found himself distracted from the conversation when he caught sight of a store called "T&M Electronics." That sounded interesting. He placed his hand on Claude's shoulder to get his attention and then pointed it out. "Hey, check it out."
