Day 27: Intercom, Evening

The intercom gave its cheery jingle just before the Head Doctor's equally buoyant voice rang through the halls.

"Ah, and finally, our day is coming to a close! Rooms and roommates have been reassigned with care, though what great partnership can start without a good meal? Ah, yes, after the nurses escort all of our patients, new and old, back to their proper rooms, everyone will have the chance to enjoy a savory chicken pot pie, full of peas, carrots, potatoes, and of course, chicken. On the side, we'll have buttery corn on the cob and green beans, and to drink, you may choose from the regular slew of water, milk, or assorted juices, which your nurse will bring to you.

"I believe that's all for now! Phew, long day, huh? I know I'll be happy to get some sleep, and thank you to all our vigilant doctors and nurses, although Dr. House seems to have gone AWOL... Hmm... Well, in any case, have a good dinner, everyone!"

The intercom clicked off again as the nurses began organizing the patients for the small trek back to their rooms.

[ OOC: Remember, room threads go in response to THIS post, and please put your respective room number in the subject line of your first post. Thanks! ]

This elusive cousin was beginning to sound more like a rival than anything. That was fine; all was fair in love and war and besides, a little healthy competition for a date never hurt.

Dark leaned back in his chair and gave a mock resigned sigh. "Sadly, I'm only a stunningly handsome young man. I'll be sure not to go shouting his name from the rooftops or anything like that."

He must have missed the bulletin board but then, he had only been awake for a few hours and the nurses didn't appear to be too keen on letting people wander around during the day. "Is there now? I think I'll have to put it to good use, the next chance I get."

"Raiden," he said back, doing his best not to hesitate on that point. People were supposed to be certain of their names, but he couldn't even be confident about that much. He was pretty sure that he was Raiden, though, and he was starting to think that the name fit more than Jack did. His "father" had given him that name, and so he didn't exactly want to keep it.

He didn't see why Mason was making such a huge deal about the fact that there had been pens under the desk -- since he didn't know how to respond to that, he simply didn't.

As for his story, that was not a simple question to answer. "Well, it's a pretty long one," he blurted out with a shrug.

There was some truth to Auel's argument. If there was nothing to weaken, then that was the best situation for a person, in a way. They knew their limits and didn't have to worry about getting in over their head. It also meant they had no powers, though. Then again, some people could certainly get by just fine without them.

Though maybe that wasn't true, since Sora was fairly certain no one had succeeded in escaping this place yet.

His roommate's philosophy (or the philosophy of his world, at least) was not something that Sora could agree with, but he felt bad that Auel had been forced to live in such circumstances. It probably meant that a lot of what he had been put through here he was already used to, but that wasn't necessarily a good thing.

"Sometimes people are taken against their will, though - and horrible things are done to them," he explained with a frown. He was going to go and help them tonight, even if he couldn't stop it all from happening.

“It’s a little difficult to describe. You could say it absorbs people’s souls into its body to make it stronger. The people die instantly.” It was a little strange for Siegfried, having to explain just what Nightmare did. So many people knew of the monster on his world that it simply wasn’t necessary to explain.

Siegfried listened to what Peony had to say. Something about time changes, and that he might still be on his own world, fighting Nightmare. If he didn’t think too hard about it, it sounded logical. He’d been brought to Landel’s Institute whilst fighting Nightmare, so maybe when he left the institute he would find himself back in the same place and time, as if he hadn’t even been taken to a different world.

Of course, when Siegfried thought hard about it, it sounded impossible.

“I hope you’re right. It’s about time somebody got rid of that monster.”

Max caught sight of her expression and couldn't help but grin. "Yeah, that's a mixed blessing around here," she replied ruefully. "Don't worry. Until then, I'm sure between the pair of us, we can do alright."

Smiling, Logan watched as the kid tried out his stuff. It didn't matter if it worked or not; it was important that he knew his limits. Logan felt truly confident for the first time since he'd woken here. Strength in numbers was definitely the way to go, he was sure of it.

"Don' worry kid, I'll be here ta catch ya if ya fall. After all, ain't that wha' friends 'r for?"

Larsa nodded slowly to both of Adelheid's responses, releasing the breath he had not known he was holding. As the days continued forth, his roommate transformed from an adversary against his idealistic beliefs to a good friend he had long since learned to fret over. It seemed that neither of them were making much progress, but it could be looked over for the moment.

T'would seem that time passed much quicker than Larsa ever expected, because before he knew it the intercom came to life. He listened intently, expression changing from a passive stare to a worried look.

"I am wary of this trip..." The child murmured to himself, and with good reason as well. Why suddenly grant them with so much freedom in so little time? Though he could worry about that later, and with one last frown he quickly began to prepare for the night. Though unlike the other nights, it would appear that Larsa was planning to leave before his guardian met with him.

"I hope your night proves to be a fruitful one, Adelheid." He smiled softly to his roommate before finally stepping out.

Ami smiled at Anise as she took the set of maps from her. "Thank you, I really appreciate it." She took the maps over to her desk and began copying them on to sheets of paper from her journal.

She listened to Anise as she copied. Obviously the girl was hoping Ami would leave before her friends showed up. That was fine with Ami - since she was heading out anyway, it wouldn't be a problem.

"I'm glad you have people coming to meet up with you," she said, hiding a smile at Anise's obvious adoration of whoever it was she was meeting. It reminded her of Minako-chan. An empty feeling hit her, as if something was missing. I wish the other senshi were here, she thought dejectedly. At least I have Usagi, but I feel so helpless stuck in this place...

Ami swallowed the lump that had formed in her throat and concentrated on completing her copying. Standing and smiling back at Anise, Ami handed back the maps. Just as she was handing them over, the intercom clicked on, and a shiver went down Ami's spine as Dr Landel's voice came over the speaker. She listened, almost afraid of what she would hear. A lower level? Accessed from the kitchen? Ami had a sudden sense of foreboding. "Well, guess that's my cue," she said with a grimace. She began tearing strips off her bedding and wrapped them in a larger piece which she tied around her waist. To the makeshift bag she added the six paper mache balls and five balloons. Picking up her torch and the maps, Ami gave Anise a half smile and waved as she walked out the door and into the night.

"Well, a 'fuck you' certainly wouldn't aid me with anything useful." Jade quickly quipped in after Riddick was finished talking, rather pleased with what he managed to 'coax' out of the muscular man with enough prodding.

Most people would've been rather weary of the thought of Riddick confessing that he was a murderer, and a violent one if one relied on appearances. But Jade was the type that could never be fit in the norm, as with anyone else who have had their fair share of homicide. He was about to reply when the intercom finally went off, signaling that the night had finally loomed over them.

"After you," Jade offered with an ecstatic smile and a simple wave of his hand towards the door. "I do believe cold-blooded murder takes priority in this case."

"Yeah, well, you guys eat raw fish." Steve pouted - Canada was fine and dandy to him, who was this guy to talk? "But, yeah. I think they're the ones that are loony and all that - you don't even look Canadian."

Holding up a fork, Steve frowned in thought. "Come to think of it, aren't there a lot of people from Japan here? Kind of makes you wonder..."

Okita smiled, but he didn't feel the confidence he tried to project. Hijikata had been missing for nearly the entire day. He'd not responded to the bulletin and Okita just had a feeling that he was gone. He hoped he was wrong, but he had to prepare himself for the worst.

"Thank you. I hope so, too." If there was one thing Okita Souji was good at - it was hiding his emotions, keeping a steady front and moving forward. Even though his words should have sounded sad, he came across as if he truly believed he'd find him tonight. Fooling yourself was the first step to fooling the enemy, after all.

He sighed and twirled the pen in his fingers, leaning on one elbow. "People here worry far too much about others' fights. We'll certainly have to be careful. After all the effort of arranging a spar, it'd be unfortunate if we had to give it up because a few 'good citizens' decided to step in."

Okita also had to worry about whether he might kill any of those Samaritans by accident. He'd have to be careful with Guy, as well. He needed to spar to release some of his stress, but if he didn't watch himself... Guy was a good person. He didn't deserve having that turned on him. He paused as he heard the two announcements go up and felt his nervousness rise. Sleep studies were obviously a cover for something other experiment and he worried that Hijikata might have been taken for that. Who knew what these people might do?

"It seems our real jobs are about to begin, hm?" he said quietly, looking toward the door.

"I'd like to, if it ever becomes possible," Argilla replied. So many things that she'd love to see; the ocean of course, and trees growing like they should, not in parks under the Karma Society dome. Everything she'd associated with the Nirvana they'd been promised and everything they'd been denied.

She was guessing that a crew was something like a tribe, but the idea of pirates was obviously not among the things she had just known about, like cats and children. "What is a pirate?" she asked after a moment, curious to learn more about this place.

Argilla smiled slightly at the mention of going it alone. "I seem to have been abandoned by my people tonight too. I was hoping to get a good look around the place." And possibly find something she could eat here, although if she were unable to tune entirely... well, she'd just have to keep away from people. Blood around the mouth was difficult to explain away as a wound.

Ed nearly growled at the response. Damn smart-arse midget. Ed ahted people like him! Really and truly!

So instead of responding, he grabbed his notebook and started flipping through the pages carefully, checking out the drawings of weaponry that he'd acquired and then beginning a list of people to whom he owed weapons. It was a little longer than he'd have liked, but he could manage it, he thought. It would just take a while to get through.

Ed gulped down the rest of her dinner while Ururu was talking. Innnteresting. She wondered if there were Hollows at Landel's. At this point it seemed pretty easy to believe anything. Or at least, believe that the people believed they were something they believed. And then the intercom went off, and Ed listened silently, having totally forgotten the idea of a field trip with all the other things that had happened. The second message was odd... Ed noted the static more than the words. Hmm hmm... oddness, yes.

She sprang up from her chair, and then thought for a moment. "Ed has a place to go help people tonight, and is wondering if Ururu will be alright?"

She remembered seeing some interesting things in her desk earlier, well, the desk in the temporary room, and as she checked this one she saw all the presents had been moved to it. The only one she took was the radio for the moment... that had potential.

"Oh, I understand now." Orihime smiled at her. Tear was a lot like the shingami she'd met. Maybe she really was a lot older than she looked. Orihime didn't doubt that the girl's - woman's? - pride as a soldier wouldn't permit her to take anyone into danger for her own sake, but at the same time she knew how serious Rukia was about her warning. Maybe she could just follow quietly until Tear found someone if it came to that. She didn't want to push herself on her roommate after all.

"There's someone I need to talk to. I'm not sure where he is yet, but he's not very hard to find." In all likelihood, he would find her first. "You don't need to worry. I'll be safe with him."

"...my real name? Or the one these people insist on calling me?" Mukuro asked with a bit of a smile. The other seemed friendly enough, perhaps he could afford to be a little more genial. He turned in his seat a little, to face his roommate.

There was quite a spread of ages, from what he had seen, which was unusual. The purpose of this -- an experiment of some kind, he was sure -- was not obvious either. Though, if he were the experimenter he wouldn't have it be obvious, would he?

What other name could he have besides his real name? Maybe a nickname, but surely not two names! That was just plain weird. Not like he was going to say it out loud to him, he was stupid, but not so stupid as to tell an almost-stranger he was weird.

High school really did teach you some useful life skills. Huh.

"Your...real...name?" he said confusedly, unsure of what he meant by 'real name' and 'the one they insist on calling him.' As far as Danny knew, 'they' (he assumed he meant the staff) called everyone by their first name. Robin and Ururu hadn't mentioned any name mix-ups, and he surely didn't have one.

"Rokudou Mukuro," he offered, the kid looked a bit stupid. Not necessarily in the moronic way, but simple. A slow inhalation, before he shrugged. "It's nice to meet you...?"

Politeness should not be overlooked, even when dealing with the mentally soft. If anything it should be extraordinarily useful, but he found it hard to keep disdain from his actions. Today had been a rather irritatingly annoying day.

"What's a pirate?" Nami repeated, sounding surprised. It was the Great Age of Pirates where she had come from, and the thought of pirates either struck fear or excitement into the hearts of the population, especially that of the Grand Line.

"There are a few kinds of pirates," Nami said, relishing in her words, "but the basics are that we're outlaws on the sea, we love money, and we'll take whatever we need if we need to. It's not to say we're not utterly respectable people. My crew? We're off to the end of the Grand Line, in search of the Pirate King's greatest treasure." She spoke with real relish in her words, as if she was really quite proud to be part of the Straw Hat team. And she was!

That was when the intercom sounded off. It surprised Nami a little bit, as she hadn't expected the sudden change in the Head Doctor's voice. The lights went out, and the doorknob clicked, which was probably the sound of something unlocking. The door?

Nami put her mostly-eaten dinner aside and fished under her pillow for where she assumed her own light would be, then pushed the button on it. It worked just like she'd expected it to, thank goodness.

Shining the flashlight over in Argilla's direction, she spoke again. "As was I - which means I'm working alone for now. Though you're free to join up with me later, if we happen to run into each other." Her roommate looked like she was strong enough to take care of herself, anyway...

And just like that, she was out the door.

"Oh, I'm Danny," he said, smiling slightly again. It wasn't too big of a smile, one that made it seem that he loved being here and everything around here, but rather a smaller one that showed that he wasn't trying to purposely be stupid. He just was stupid, more or less.

And again, he didn't mention the weirdness of Rokudou's name. Where the heck did that one come from?

"So, what do you think of this place?" Maybe Rokudou had been here longer than he had, and would know more about it. Plus that guy who mentioned AVALANCHE really creeped him out. He wanted to hear it from someone who seemed to be more sane and friendly.

Ururu's interest perked at the idea of going to help people. She liked helping people! She tried to do it as often as she could, and Tessai-san said it made her a good employee at the shop. Maybe it would make her feel better to help people here too.

But she couldn't do that yet. Not until she found Kisuke-san. That came first.

"I'll be okay." Ururu wasn't afraid of the night, even after what Maes-san had said. She could fight, and she was strong, especially now that she wasn't hurt anymore from the Arrancar's attack. She watched when Edward-kun searched, and decided to do the same, finding not only the radio, but a flashlight.

Flashlights were good.

"Don't get hurt, okay Edward-kun?"

Danny, American as well? That was two Americans he'd met so far, interesting. Mukuro nodded to himself, trying to keep the air pleasant.

"I'm afraid I don't know much, I just ... arrived... today. Someone did tell me to ask about what happens at night, I suppose we'll find out soon, won't we?" The question was rhetorical. The night could be a complete hoax, though Peter had not seemed like the kind to pull those sort of jokes.

"Ed will be fine too, it's not far for what she wants to do!" The redhead smiled brightly, and then remembered as well after seeing Ururu find her flashlight that there was one under her own pillow. She'd seen it this morning but completely spaced it, having been so happy to have a real pillow. She sauntered over and sure enough, there it was. The girl snatched it up, then waved to her roommate as she pranced out the door.

"So pleased to meet you, my new friend Ururu!"
