Day 27: Intercom, Evening

The intercom gave its cheery jingle just before the Head Doctor's equally buoyant voice rang through the halls.

"Ah, and finally, our day is coming to a close! Rooms and roommates have been reassigned with care, though what great partnership can start without a good meal? Ah, yes, after the nurses escort all of our patients, new and old, back to their proper rooms, everyone will have the chance to enjoy a savory chicken pot pie, full of peas, carrots, potatoes, and of course, chicken. On the side, we'll have buttery corn on the cob and green beans, and to drink, you may choose from the regular slew of water, milk, or assorted juices, which your nurse will bring to you.

"I believe that's all for now! Phew, long day, huh? I know I'll be happy to get some sleep, and thank you to all our vigilant doctors and nurses, although Dr. House seems to have gone AWOL... Hmm... Well, in any case, have a good dinner, everyone!"

The intercom clicked off again as the nurses began organizing the patients for the small trek back to their rooms.

[ OOC: Remember, room threads go in response to THIS post, and please put your respective room number in the subject line of your first post. Thanks! ]

"A few," he admitted. "Although I might have been the only one to show up this morning." The chair creaked as Kakashi leaned backwards, arm on its back in his usual relaxed posture as he looked around the room. His apartment bedroom wasn't much larger, but it at least lacked that generic feeling that this whole institute possessed. "And you?" he asked without looking over again. "Are there comrades of yours that you'll be meeting with?"

Again, curiosity, but as always Kakashi felt compelled to at least have an idea of where this guy stood.

"I was on Beta Colony when I was taken, although I've been to Earth. I'm from a time very far in your future--long-distance space travel is common." Beta Colony didn't especially have seasons, unless you counted 'sandy' and 'unbearably windy and sandy' as seasons. The nicely controlled domes stayed the same year-round.

And then, seeing Oriya's face at the pot pie, he couldn't stop himself from asking, "Are you going to eat that?"

Duo looked up when his roommate walked in, swallowing the bite of food he'd been working on.

"Hey," he returned, watching the other take up his tray. He seemed to have the same idea. If they were going to feed them well, might as well take advantage of it. Who knew when that might change in the future.

"So roomie, how's the whole crazy-mental-asylum-deathtrap thing been going for you?"

Zelgadis didn't understand Kirihara's reference to "the other side of the door," but ignored it when he heard him reply to his other comment.

He raised a quizzical eyebrow at his roommate. Kirihara seemed strangely touched by the idea that other people thought they were dead. Why did he stop eating? He seemed almost shocked...

"Who else thinks they've died?"

He'd hoped that it was an ailment specific to that girl.

"Judging by the way you said that, I'm guessing you're not, not where you come from," Dairine said cautiously. Her roommate hadn't offered a name, and she wasn't going to press. If she didn't want to tell, then Dairine wouldn't force her.

She noticed that the other girl was eating her dinner with her hands. Strange, yes, but who was she to judge? Different species had different eating habits - some didn't eat at all.

Dairine tried to determine what this girl really was, if she was indeed not human. Definitely not Wellakhit, and with the thought she acknowledged that she would probably not find Roshaun here, if nobody had seen him yet. But new patients - people - came to this place with startling regularity. Maybe Roshaun would come sometime, if he wasn't dead...

No. No, he wasn't dead. She couldn't believe that, even for a second.

To try and take her mind off of that grim subject, she ran through more alien species she knew. Rirhait? Doubtful. If so, she'd be trying to eat the plate and the tray and possibly even the bed.

Dinner? He still felt too nauseated to be hungry, and if he tried he'd likely force another all-too-human involuntary physical reaction. The breathing was bad enough (and really starting to get on his nerves - he'd breathed regularly enough in the past, but he hadn't had to then.) He didn't want to think about what vomiting would be like. He shook his head in response as he thought of what his roommate/possible demon tormentor had said.

"Mental hospital? As in, we are the patients of? That's...creative." Crowley couldn't remember hearing of Hell designing any set-up this elaborate, but he'd been on earth for millenia, and was admittedly out of touch with current trends in damnation. Still, it was (presumably) a large scenario for just him, which meant others might be stuck here too.

"I'm Crowley. And you are?" Still, probably best to assume everyone was a demon bent on inflicting torture and harm and all that until proven otherwise.

"One. I'm looking for another though. Kaido Kio?" Soubi wasn't exactly worried, but he'd feel a whole lot better knowing where the man was. besides, he'd only get an earful when Kio finally did turn up.

Soubi finished his dinner, or at least what he was willing to eat of it.
"There's nothing particularly useful in here," he pointed out.

The girl's reaction seemed normal enough. There was no way she could be the enemy and keep up such an act. Not someone like her at least. She seemed just as much of a victim as Tear and her offer to explain things to Tear made that even more clear.

"I'm Tear." She let out a terribly, terribly, small smile. It would take a microscope to see the change in her expression but she meant well! "Thank you. Any information you could provide would be useful. I appreciate the offer." She then finally relaxed entirely. Things seemed safe for now. Besides, she would have to trust her new roommate for now rather she liked it or not it seemed.

Tear sat down on what she supposed was her roommate's bed and put her hands in her lap as she listened for the explanation. At a time like this, anything was suitable to learn about.

"It's downright annoying," Saetan said. The food was passable and nutritious, at least. "From what I've heard, none of the other inmates buy into the illusion, but it's fairly strong during the day. Now the night I've heard interesting tales about. I'm looking forward to it."

He smiled, just a little. "I'm Saetan SaDiablo." He decided it was prudent not to divulge any of his titles here. Which of them would even make sense to someone not from the Realms?

Despite the need to hide his face from the other (was the swelling getting worse?), Luxord was having a fine day indeed. Everything was running just smoothly, and should it continue that way… Well.

Things would become much, much more in his favor.

Luxord smiled from behind the cloth covering his face and offered Tyche a piece of chicken he had pulled from the pie and blew on to cool. As she took it thankfully, he pet her fur affectionately (or as much as he could), took a bite of pie of his own, and cast his roommate a grin. "Quite alright, dear Noah," he replied after swallowing.

"And you?"

Nami hadn't expected someone to be escorted in so soon; there was always the possibility that she would be alone in the room, but once she saw the other similarly-uniformed woman for the first time, it was easy enough to assume that the woman would be sharing the room - there were, after all, two beds in the room, two sets of everything.

There would be absolutely no point in making an enemy of this woman, so she managed to find it in her to smile. Answers would be forthcoming momentarily, especially if she was not quite as new as Nami was.

"It would seem so," she replied smoothly. "My name's Nami - shall we play nice for now?" The question was asked with the hint of a joke.

Rukia smiled into Kairi's shoulder. While she didn't agree with everything the girl was saying, she appreciated the sentiment. "Thanks, Kairi," she said quietly, but remained still.

After a few moments, she said, "I guess I could try, I dunno... talking to him?" It was a terrifying prospect, because Rukia couldn't see it ending well. At least not without her feeling terribly embarrassed and inadequate.

“How fortunate for you,” The angry scowl was a permanent expression on his face – there only seemed to be varying degrees of harshness to it instead – and just as this mortal dared to speak to him in such a way, it caused the level of displeasure to further drop. He’d forgotten just how irritating humans could be. Which was surprising since he’d only recently left that oaf Viktor. Perhaps waking up to find himself in such an unworthy state had made him absentminded? Considering the limitations the human brain could handle, it wouldn’t have surprised such memory faults were occurring.

“You may have some intelligence yet boy, but make no mistake, I am no bag of flesh.” The Star Dragon Sword muttered as his annoyed frowned lessened somewhat. At least they were intelligent enough to follow his example – unlike some others he was associated with. Nothing but useless… the whole lot of them. “What is your name boy?”

Signum hadn't been in the best mood today. Between Momo's poor health, Renji's snub, and the arrival of what seemed (if it was even possible) to be another shinigami even more arrogant than his kin for her to force herself to kowtow to, she had plenty to be annoyed or worried over. Her discovery of Saber and the woman's subsequent choice to join her group, though, had improved on it considerably. Whatever issues she might have with the rest of Arts & Crafts, her own team was everything she could hope for, short of the rest of the Wolkenritter of her friends in the TSA.

Thoughts so buoyed, she set upon her dinner.

Unfortunately, Oriya had never heard of any such place as 'Beta Colony', though it did help that the other man explained that he wasn't from a time close to where the swordsman had been taken. The concept of this place was giving him a headache.

"And what is Beta Colony?" Oriya finally asked, taking a sample bite of the chicken that had been provided. Hm, not bad. Perhaps he would not starve after all. He took another bite before his roommate's question drew his gaze back to the heavy man.

"It's all yours."

Orihime didn't have a microscope, but Tear didn't seem like a bad person at all. She smiled and bowed. "It's nice to meet you."

She hesitated. Would the other girl be upset if she sat on her bed? Better not to risk it. She crossed over to her own bed and sat closer to the headboard, her legs folded neatly beneath her. She had to look up at the ceiling a moment to collect her thoughts.

"Well, to start, this place is called Landel's Institute. People are taken from different worlds and times, and no one knows how they got here. It's supposed to be a hospital during the day, but the doors open at night and we're allowed to roam about. There are some really dangerous creatures in the hallways." She paused, recalling the healing she'd tried earlier. "And whatever kind of power you had in your own world is weakened here, so it's not a good idea to travel alone."

Well, Peony was never really a very convenient person when it came down to it. In fact, sometimes he could be rather inconvenient if it would make someone uncomfortable (which would, in turn, amuse him terribly.)

He yawned overtly and scooted against the wall, letting his bare legs, one of which was somewhat shoddily bandaged now, hang off the other side of his bed. "Sorry, then. There are probably a ton of people who'd give you one if you ask nicely enough." He shrugged.

"No time, mm? Have a fancy party you need to get to?"

"Sorry. Don't know him." Standing, Kakashi left his chair out and moved around to his bed. After propping the pillow against the headboard, he sat down, but a second later reached behind him to pull out something under it -- a flashlight, and a heavy one at that. Testing it, he found that it worked and glanced briefly at Soubi. "I wouldn't say that."

Other than that little discovery, there really was nothing else. Before eating, he had watched his nurse show him where the clothes were kept and which drawers were his, so he knew the dresser was void of anything too functional.

"Well, then," he said lightly, "I guess now's just a matter of waiting." For what, exactly, Kakashi didn't know, and that was the worst part. He was already regretting not having taken a book from the library; reading might have made the wait a little less tense.

How... boring. Oh, to be sure, the other man's intentions were noble (as true to character yet another thing to be noted), but they were so dull. William could hardly stand being polite for the amount of time during the day he was forced to do so, but to always be like that?

No wonder the man was an idiot.

"How kind of you," William praised, schooling himself not to gag.

"He'll turn up," Soubi shrugged. And he would. If he was in trouble, Soubi would go to him. He'd promised.

"It'll only get you so far, Ninja-san," Soubi said with a small smile. Blunt object for hitting, provider of light... But what then? It wasn't going to get Ritsuka out of here.

Soubi stood up and unwound the bandages around his neck while sitting on the bed. "The doors should unlock soon." He rolled the bandage up so he could reapply it. He had two cigarettes in his pocket still. Maybe he'd find a lighter tonight. Other than that, all he needed was his own torch and it was off to M35 once more. This time to collect Ritsuka.

"Oh, that poor guy. I knew he needed a friend." Ashton had been worried about Jake (or.. Raiden, maybe?) when he'd said he didn't know if he had any friends. People like that shouldn't be allowed to continue saying things like that! Being alone.. it was one of the most damaging things there was, or at least Ashton thought so. Once Ashton had had friends (and dragons) to fill the void in his life, everything had seemed to brighten. This Jake or Raiden guy needed some of that! If he even had problems with his own identity...

Of course, Ashton was one to speak of identity. There were some times he found himself wondering exactly who he was without the dragons.

"But, ah.. oh, he'll be so surprised to see both of us in the same room! I hope he's not freaked out by it or anything," Ashton said worriedly. The last thing he wanted to do was put forth a bad impression!

He took a bite of pot pie that he'd rid of peas, mulling over it for a moment while he thought of who all was coming to visit. "Ah.. my friend Claude's going to stop by to pick up a sword. Dias too probably, though that's nothing new, really.." And how it made him smile to realize that! "...but then they're both going to leave pretty fast. I suppose that another friend from my world, Leon, will also be stopping by, though I told him to come late." Ashton didn't really like having so much of a crowd in one room!

"On that note, do you like kids?" Ashton had spotted his roommate with a youngster today or the day before, but that didn't mean he liked them..

“Maybe … give things time?” Kairi questioned, mainly talking to herself and also to Rukia. “Or you can get someone else to talk to him with you? Someone who also knows him?” she wasn’t sure how many other people that were at Landel’s knew of Byakuya, but judging by the bulletin board messages, she figured out there were plenty of people who at least knew OF him.

Pulling away so Rukia could at least breathe, Kairi looked down at her friend with a bright smile. “Or you can draw him a picture? Your drawings always make me smile!”

It was odd. Kairi didn't know what to say in this matter, really. After a few moments of silence, her smile mellowed out, and she turned her gaze to the wall behind Rukia's head. "I was adopted too, but I have no siblings. I know how it is to try and prove to someone that something is worth while. But I know you'll do it."

Well, this was infinitely more fun. Because being stuck in a room with someone who was moping so much you could cut through it with a knife was just the best thing. Ever. Hisoka scowled as he finished his dinner.

Deep breaths. Deep breaths. He didn't have any books to throw in here, snapping at Renji might now have been the best idea.

"Interesting, but it's hardly proof," Artemis reminded Haku. "Apparently Ken and Omi know each other--so that could have something to do with it. I'm not sure yet. So don't engage any enemy believing that they'll have mercy on you," The boy looked thoughtful, "But I doubt I need to remind you of that."

Artemis looked slightly taken aback, but he set aside his tray and moved towards the closet, "Are you certain? I still have the one you gave me previously, and you could probably put them to much better use...

"But I'd be happy to take them for tonight. The captain has put me in his team again, but he didn't mention what we were doing," he shrugged his good shoulder, kneeling down to look for the shoes, "It's slightly unnerving.

"And of course I'll let you see the blade--once it's done, of course. I have two patients who owe me five hundred grams of metal." He smiled to himself.

Armand was always polite if he could help it. Marguerite had scolded him often when he was a child to teach him manners. They'd been poor and couldn't afford cheeky attitudes. And honestly, in Armand's case, it hadn't helped that much. He was downright rude and too forward by the standards of his own time. Only in the modern day did he seem so painfully polite.

"Thank you, Dr. Birkin. It was all I could offer to do for the man. I'll be next to no good in the work he hopes to do." He made a face at the corn. It had already been salted, so he washed the mouthful down with a few swallows of juice.

"There's simply too much to learn so quickly. I don't like this modern world very much."
